Disgraced fashion designer John Galliano apologized Wednesday for the behaviour that led to his firing by design house Christian Dior.

However, Galliano denied allegations of racism and said he has fully co-operated with a police investigation into his alleged comments.

In a statement released Wednesday by the fashion designer's lawyers, Galliano said he accepted "that the accusations made against me have greatly shocked and upset people."

Despite denying the claims against him, Galliano said his apology was offered "unreservedly."

Earlier Wednesday it was reported that Galliano had left France and was headed for rehab.

He was fired by Dior one day earlier on Tuesday.

Galliano's career began to unravel on Thursday when he was questioned by police after an incident at a Paris cafe. He was accused of directing anti-Semitic and anti-Asian comments towards a couple.

Then on Monday, amateur video emerged of a second, earlier incident at the same cafe, in which Galliano appears to insult Jews.

Dior suspended Galliano on Friday pending the results of a police probe, but then fired him on Tuesday.

According to a report Wednesday in the New York Times -- citing anonymous sources -- Galliano left France for rehab after being persuaded to do so by supermodels Naomi Campbell and Kate Moss.

The newspaper report speculated that Galliano is likely headed to The Meadows, a treatment centre in Arizona where Elton John and Donatella Versace have been treated in recent years.

The timing of Galliano's fall from grace is especially bad for Dior, which is set to unveil its new collection at the fall-winter 2011-2012 shows starting this Friday.

However, Hilary Alexander, fashion director for Britain's The Daily Telegraph, said the effect on the company will be minimal compared to the effect on Galliano himself.

"It's his name really that's being featured in all the publicity and stories that are being written," Alexander told The Associated Press Television News at Paris Fashion Week.

"Dior is a house that has a 60-year history and billions of dollars in global sales that they must maintain and as far as I can see they intend to pick up the reins and carry on. It's business as usual and the show must go on."

She said Dior has protected its own interests by acting quickly to disassociate itself from Galliano immediately after the allegations emerged.

The company is believed to be seeking a replacement for Galliano, who has held the design reins at Dior for more than a decade.

When you watch the video of him - you can tell he is obviously under the influence of alhohol or drugs - he appears very shaky, unbalanced and very much drunken - and who has hasn't said stupid abhorrent things when they are slammed anyway - not to excuse his comments but perhaps "rehab" should have happened a long time ago.

Maybe Moe should take a look back in the news earlier this week. A Canadian was arrested on the steps of the Reichstag for making a Nazi salute. I consider it appropriate for him to be arrested and the same holds true for Galliano. We all know these behaviours are wrong the problem comes from one thinking they are funny and won't get caught, or are above the laws for the "little people".

Too little too late. Galliano, when in rehab stand in front of the mirror and repeat "I have a big mouth", "I have a big mouth".

@Linda in Vancouver: You might want to check the definition of socialism. It doesn't mean what you think it does.

@Moe from Ontario -- Freedom of speech does exist in France, but with the exception of racism and antisemitism. It is not surprising that Galliano was arrested given that racist and antisemitic comments/expressions are not only illegal but taken very seriously in France (as they should be!).

Ah yes....when things get a little hot, head to re-hab...suddenly a conversion on the road to the baths!

Moe From Ontario has totally convinced me that Ontario is not populated entirely by people who support socialism as a means to protect what he thinks is "free speech". I can only assume that Moe either did not hear the rant,or has a very twisted view of what censorship and free speech really are.I do not believe anyone could listen to this idiots rant, and not see it as "hate speech".It's the clearest example of hate I've ever seen on any real news program. Honestly Moe,I have lots of issues with Ontario, but even they deserve more enlightened citizens speaking on their behalf. Even this west coaster can't believe you speak for many Ontarians. What country,or planet did you come from?Or is your post just vitriole that's concocted to raise hatred or incite violence? Something like anarchism and barbarism.

Huh - I'd never heard of this guy until today. Yet another pretentious wanker from the shallow world of fashion. Expect him to be "diagnosed" with bi-polar disorder by the end of the week.

The best thing that could happen to this guy is to be stripped of his fame and fortune and to live like a normal person in a 'real world', not the make believe world he's been living in.It seems he became drunk with power and rehab won't help him recover from a lack of character.

MOE, with the vast and endless resources of the WWW at your fingertips, why would you not take the time to educate yourself before posting the comment you did? Their is no such thing as freedom of speech and there never has been. It's an urban legend. Galianno's right to express his beliefs ended when he promoted genocide. Do you understand that? We have the right to disagree publicly with our elected officials but we do not have the right to say they should be killed. Same idea. You don't have the right to yell "fire" in a crowded theater. John Galianno doesn't have the right to promote genocide against Jews and never did.

Well of course, don't all these clowns head off to re-hab when they do or say something stupid. It's a good excuse for being a fool.

Your apology is accepted without question or judgment, but life goes on with the rest of the planet. it is most sad your life is consumed with such hate. All the best while you look for a new job; do not forget to drop your resumes at 711.

What kind of a pathetic little weenie do you have to be to go off like this guy? He was living the good life, with wealth, fame, and more than any real person could dream of,and this is the end result.People without a scrap of food,or a shelter in sight must be rolling their eyes in disgust. Perhaps all those who can afford some of this guys designer clothes will consider sending an equivalent amount to a starving community, and take a pass on the clothes.Even if it's jkust this one time. Wishful thinking.I know. But as they say, "the dream never dies, just the dreamer".

@ MOE: what a simply ridiculous comment. In virtually all liberal democracies, freedom of speech is not an absolute right. Your rights stop when you infringe those of others including by advocating or condoning racial violence and genocide. This is all the more relevant to countries like France, a country having actually been occupied by the Nazis and which saw a large segment of its population decimated.

Why rehab, why not go straight to get a face lift to offset the UGLY side of him!!!! Perhaps, he should come to term that UGLYNESS has played a role in this behaviour for dismissal! Its hard to face or look at that face! An animal looks much better than what is walking loose.

So sad that his career has been derailed by drugs and alcohol. His life can only get better if he succeeds in a treatment facility. Who knows one day he may have his own house again, under his name, so much talent wasted with drugs and alcohol. Obviously he is in a lot of pain right now, and needs the best of care, and I wish him well, don't like the anti semitic remarks thought, Jews have suffered more than enough, and some of the greatest minds have come out of the Jewish community.

They hauled him into the police station? I may have missed something but when was it against the law to speak your mind?Freedom of speech does not exist and censorship is barging ahead full steam.
