Well we all know it is possible for this to come to our cities. However, I firmly believe that there are anti-terrorist forces in place that can stop it.

Canadian militants training for jihad: reports

Date: Sat. Jan. 15 2011 9:48 PM ET

A group of Canadian militants is training for jihad at an al Qaeda facility in Pakistan, according to a report released by a Hong Kong-based news organization.

An article posted on the Asia Times Online website over the weekend cites "well-placed Taliban sources" as saying that Canadian militants are among those being trained in an al Qaeda camp near the border of Pakistan.

The reports said the intention is to prepare Western extremists for an attack on Canadian soil.

Assistant RCMP commissioner Gilles Michaud told The Canadian Press that the report was being assessed for its "credibility and reliability." Michaud said the RCMP would take appropriate action according to the results of the assessment.

According to the article, as many as 12 Canadians travelled to Afghanistan in February 2010. After joining the Egyptian militant organization Jihad al-Islami, they were moved to a training camp in North Waziristan in November.

The Canadians are reportedly receiving special courses in weaponry, explosives and how to connect to smuggling networks in North America.

These militants will then return home to execute al Qaeda's plan of targeting big cities in Canada, a source told Asia Times Online.

Americans, Britons and Germans are also reportedly training at the camp for missions in other Western nations.

Syed Saleem Sahzad, the Pakistan bureau chief for Asia Times Online, co-wrote the article and said his information came from credible sources. He said the exact nature of the training is still a mystery.

"We have very limited knowledge about their backgrounds or the exact nature of their training," Sahzad told CTV News Channel on Saturday.

"We have the details that were commented in our story and that is all."

The article also provides the names of some of the Canadian trainees, including a "Leman Langlois" and a "James Richards," among others. The Asia Times Online article says the names provided by sources could not be independently identified.

The Globe and Mail reported that no Canadians with the provided names are known to be missing or being sought by police.

Security analyst John Thompson said al Qaeda and other terrorist organizations have spent the last several years recruiting Westerners who can be trained and sent to their home countries, where they can blend in while they lay the groundwork for an attack.

According to Thompson, experts most fear an attack such as the co-ordinated series of assaults in Mumbai, India that killed 164 people and wounded hundreds more.

"We saw this in Europe just before Christmas," Thompson told CTV News Channel. "There were the reports from Germany, from Britain and from Belgium that various homegrowns had gone over to training camps to come back, try and acquire arms somewhere and plan a Mumbai-style attack, where you're shooting hundreds of people in a shopping centre or in a highrise building."

Larry D., you choose to join the armed forces and you get payed to be there so don't play the great patriot card. You're not defending Canada, just your choice of career. Lots of Canadians risk their lives doing their jobs and you're no better than they are. Grow up kid. Quit whining about the job you chose to do or quit that job and find another. And since you say that " most are not like us" you sound poorly suited for the job you chose. Canada's representatives in Afghanistan shouldn't be openly and proudly racist.

No one knows how true or untrue the reports are. Security is no excuse to call people liars and no excuse to think that 82 year olds are our next bombers. There is no excuse to undress people in public either. The public needs to know that common sense has returned to the Calgary airport. Those who called the 82 year old a liar, and those involved in the undressing of someone in public, must not wok there anymore. Period. And please when you hire, think common sense!

This shouldn't be surprising due to Canada's pathetic excuse for a justice system. A clear message was sent to the jihad world out there recently that Canada is a great place to do business. Let's not forget that most of the members of the "Mississauga 18" terrorist group who were eventually found guilty were free to go after being convicted due to the "2 for 1" time served discount.

Will the Canadian Air Transport Security Authority (CATSA) be ready to profile, identify and search these individuals upon their return to Canada? They seem to have missed that as many as 12 Canadians travelled to Afghanistan in February 2010. Missed them going out - but let's pray upon their return, CATSA is not distracted by other things such as, after an 82-year-old cancer survivor didn't think it necessary to reveal that she had lost a breast to cancer and had a gel prosthesis; "I didn't think I had to tell the whole world I had a mastectomy," underwent a "humiliating" body scan at the Calgary airport. CATSA scanners revealed her prosthesis, security personnel accused her of lying and searched her by hand. We are so screwed.

Eventually Pakistan will be invaded as military's around the world realize that Pakistan poses a greater threat to world peace than either Iran or Afghanistan. A country with Taliban and al Qaeda bases armed with nuclear weapons. The only reason they haven't been yet is because of their pro west government that keeps foreign military's with an excuse to continue being friendly. However, this does not actually change the fact that Pakistan is the worlds bigger farmhouse for growing terrorism.

You know it's pretty odd what this so-called 'terrorism expert' has to say. The 9-11 hijackers were in the West for months, they certainly had difficulty blending into society in America. Much of the leadership of Al'Qaeda (like so many Arab politicians) were educated in the West.

What I seldom see discussed is why these people would want to do this. It has nothing to do with religion. Is it because they see an erosion of culture?? I don't think so. Maybe, just maybe it is because of the injustices in the Middle East which the Canadian Govt continues to support. Anyway we will never fix this problem by humiliating 80 year old's at airports. It like all of these issues since time began can only be fixed by compromise.

Jamie, Ottawa has a point that should not be passed up lightly. The media and what is said in the media affects public reaction and politicians know it. Politicians and national security agencies also have our safety in mind. And they need to find a balance that is best for Canadians.

The question that Jamie raises looks at how foreign news sources affect Canadian domestic policy. Without a doubt, some foreign stories may lead to domestic policy changes. However, what Canadian policy makers and security agencies ought to bare in mind is that by changing domestic policy too much (especially because of foreign news sources) we risk the possibility of social unrest here at home. If policies are made which the majority denies, eventually people will start a revolution.

This is a far cry from what this news source has the potential to do, but it is nonetheless important that foreign news sources and stories do not lead to unnecessary policy changes that may hurt Canadian social cohesion, and our social well-being.

In a post 9-11 world we need to see the big picture; 9-11 is one event that has effectively changed many national and foreign policies; and it has created many policies that take away from the rights and freedoms of North Americans.

We should watch and be cautious that we are not doing so at the advantage of foreign bodies who want to create some sort of revolution within our own borders to make Canadian citizens fight for them.

We are the second largest oil producing nation, we have the most fresh water, we have likely the most land per capita...(military...US): we have much to loose, and little to gain by many of the fascist policies that have emerged over the last decade.

About those churches in Cairo - there are not many outside of Cairo and Alexandria - perhaps not any. They were in Egypt long before Mohammed invented the Islamic faith and the best way to describe the treatment of Christians is "tolerated". They generally have the poorest jobs or are hired as the token Christian. This is not about Christianity or Islam - these Jihadist are all about political power - the trainies are just too stupid to realize that.

Well, one more reason for allowing concealed carry for law-abiding Canadian citizens. God forbid a Canadian ever gets murdered by a terrorist bomb, but I would sure appreciate the chance for a Canadian to be able to defend himself/herself with sufficient force to make a difference, if it ever came to that. Please support concealed carry of firearms for your friendly law-abiding Canadian neighbour.

This sort of articles enjoy very little credibility. There are lobbies who release them to the media from time to time to achieve certain political targets. To Al: If you ever have the chance to visit Egypt, you will notice the thousands of churches with their high crosses where Christian Egyptians enjoy the right to freely practice their religion. In a country that is member of the so called "Free World" like Switzerland, Muslims are not allowed by law to build minarets for their mosques if they ever get licenses to build mosques to start with!

Anyone who believes we are not at war with Islam needs to shake their heads. Islams aim is to take over the world and if we don't tread carefully they will do it. Anyone going through an al-Qaeda training camp is a traitor to their respective country, but that isn't what this is all about. It is about the spreading of Islam by the sword. There are Muslims who are not interested in this method, but there are plenty who are.

Prof. Pye Chartt
said

More proof that the so-called "War on Terror" has reached our backyard, and is no longer really "over there." Sure, we need to deal with terrorist training camps abroad; however, their existence isn't a requisite to our enemy's twisted and lethal ideological efforts. Muslim extremists can communicate, organize, meet, and carry out a depraved mission in our free society. Thus far, we've been fairly adept at getting the jump on them and thwarting their plots. One day, of course, we'll fail to stop them, simply by virtue of odds. We need to remain diligent, change our official focus somewhat, and pay closer attention to what transpires in our own backyard, under our nose.

They may have Canadian papers, but they aren't Canadian. Load them up and ship them back where they so much want to be.

Most Canadians will continue to sit there smugly believing that terrorism is an American problem and that we are so nice that Al Quaida and their friends will just leave us alone. The fact is that our political system, our values, our beliefs and virtually everything in our culture is an offence to radical Islam.

They believe at the very core of their beings that it is their sacred duty to bring us to our knees and to kill us if we refuse to embrace their religion, accept Sharia law and submit to a fundamentalist Muslim dictatorship. Make no mistake! The question is not if we will be attacked, but only when, where and how.

No matter how good our security intelligence and law enforcement may be it is not perfect and eventually one or more of these fanatics will succeed in a high profile suicide mission on Canadian soil. We may not be at war with Islam but the radical elements of that belief structure are most certainly at war with us.

If this report is true, then these people have committed an act of treason (and no lawyer anywhere can possibly get them off without using a manipulative activist judge as the law in this is VERY clear) by taking up arms for a terrorist group against the interests of this country.
