Justin Trudeau has found himself under attack by People for the Ethical Treatment of Animals, who are angry that over a photo of the Liberal MP and his family clad in fur.

The photo depicts Trudeau, his wife and two young children sitting under a fur blanket, wearing parkas with fur-rimmed hoods. It was featured on a Christmas card that Trudeau sent to constituents in his Montreal riding.

PETA called the image "a lurid way of celebrating peace on Earth" for showing coyote fur.

A spokesperson for the group, Jane Dollinger, said the fur was a product of misery. Steel-jaw traps are often used to kill coyotes, she said, which have been banned in many countries.

Alex Lanthier, a spokesperson for Trudeau's office, said the MP and his family were wearing jackets made by the Canada Goose company, which is based in Canada and produces fur in a "sustainable way."

Meanwhile Canada Goose said it adheres to guidelines by the Fur Council of Canada, it sources fur in a humane way and adds fur to its products "only as absolutely necessary, and exclusively for functional purposes."

The council also defended the fur industry in Canada, saying that it's well regulated.

"We're not using any endangered species," said Allan Herscovici, the council's executive vice-president. "In fact, the fur trade's an environmental success story of sustainable use of a renewable resource."

Lanthier said that while this may be the first time Trudeau's family has been photographed in fur, the MP's late father and former prime minister appeared in fur-lined parkas many times.

Trudeau posted a message on Twitter Friday afternoon implying that he did not intend to spark controversy with his family portrait.

"I'm glad to support both Canadian products and sustainable fur," he wrote. "But it's mostly just a family Christmas card."

Like father, like son...unabashedly self-indulgent, happy to dance the line of hypocrisy, and righteously comfortable giving all critics the finger. "I love to connect with the people, the little people, by shaking hands, everywhere I go. Pass me the hand sanitizer." Witness Liberal royalty.

Who cares about PETA, and screw all their values. Weren't they the group trying to compare the Greyhound bus murder to killing an animal, and how Canadians should be sorry for a HUMAN murder victim, if they aren't sorry for ANIMALS. PETA is sick, and so are most animl activists these days.

Hello People!! What is all the fuss about? Have we forgotten what this country was built on? Yes, the Fur Trade. Also, for those of you who have not lived in areas with the first nation people, or those who live off the land. Trapping, yes TRAPPING just like Farming or Fishing have put food on the table! Or would we rather that we have these people who livelihood depend on humanin trapping stand in the welfare line, and lose their self respect that the anti trapping has caused? So, please let us just drop it! Good for Jusin to show the PRIDE of our countries history!

I thought he was smart? I see this apple fell far from the tree. Didn't he think such a picture would attract the attention of PETA and others who detest the use of fur for fashion. There are countless other ways to stay warm instead of killing animals and using their fur.

I'm certainly no Justin Trudeau fan, but this is probably just poor judgement on his part. He should have known that anyone against fur would be against this card. I do hope that his card said Merry Christmas, and not Happy Holidays or Seasong Greetings, but that is highly unlikely.

The "wear fur for warmth" proponents here would have a much stronger case if fur were actually worn for warmth: that is, turned to the inside for maximum insulation, and therefore not providing much of a fashion statement on the outside. The fact that fur is used almost exclusively as trim or as the exterior of the garment pretty much puts that argument to rest.BTW I am fed up with the spotlight always being put on this attention-craving spoiled brat. He only got elected because of the nostalgia of ageing baby boomers who somehow think this is P.E.T. reincarnated! Get a real job like the rest of us!

At least the fur trim hood is covering up his horrid hair cut (or lack there of). None the less, as a far right conservative I have to say.....Nice picture, well done Mr. Trudeau.

Really, who cares? I'm no particular fan of Justin Trudeau, but really? So long as the company actually goes by the guidelines set out, they are not really doing anything wrong. Besides, most people know that the lightest and warmest materials for a cold winter climate is down - which happens to come from geese.

I think the pic is great. Retro look to it. PETA Shut up. Coyotes are a pest and becoming a real problem in many parts of this country.Walk in the woods around here, or let your kids and see what might happen.

Curious. I don't remember any PETA outrage when a coyote kills a human. That's OK with them, I guess. Coyotes are just being coyotes. Well, when humans wear fur they are just being human. Fur is the oldest form of clothing.

Beautiful family picture, Mr. Justin Trudeau! So, people, what's better? 1) Manufacturing non-Canadian man-made products not conducive to proper decomposition in the landfills? 2) Or all-natural fur? HE, Winkler, Manitoba

Nothing short of tacky. The picture actually evokes disgust in me, and I'm not a member of this animal rights group. However, I have never believed that animals be killed so that people can think they look good. Trudeau family...get over yourselves and wear fabric like most everyone else!

I normally don't care for anything PETA says. But considering that Justin Trudeau is a Liberal and some of the groups and people the Liberal party associates with when they're the opposition, the hypocricy of this act is incredibly funny. Can you say "Career ender" Justin?

PETA grow up, this is pathetic on your part. Fur trade is a big part of Canada's history and has been around for years before PETA was even invented. It is a Christmas card for god sakes.

It's about time those yokels find something to do with their seemingly over abundance of time than to boo-hoo and bellyache at someone's Christmas card! Maybe Peta should get a few coyotes for pets, and see how long thier cute little kitties stay healthy!

There is absolutely nothing anyone can say or do that won't offend someone else's sensibilities. Some wag came up with "One half of us is here only to irritate the other half." Where I live it is open season on coyotes. Their "partying" is so loud it will keep you awake on some summer nights. Oh, and do keep in mind that given half a chance a coyote, or a bunch of them, will, with great gusto, bring you down and eat you! I'll bet that would quickly change a few attitudes around PETA if it happened to one of them.
