A self-identified friend of a slain Canadian businessman has told Mexican state police that he is responsible for putting Daniel Dion's dead body in a car that was set ablaze.

Dion, of Carleton Place, Ont., made frequent trips to Mexico for his handbag business, which used prisoners to manufacture his goods.

The 51-year-old went missing in October and his body was later found in a burned-out car in Guerrero state.

The state prosecutor of Guerrero told a local news agency that state police have since detained 46-year-old Hector Juan Figueroa, who has provided them with details of Dion's death.

Figueroa told police that he was friends with Dion, and that the two met while Figueroa was serving prison time for murder. Figueroa also claims that he often let Dion stay at an apartment that belonged to his mother.

On the night of Oct. 23, Figueroa said he arrived at the apartment to find Dion had been drinking.

He said Dion began to hit him. In self-defence, Figueroa said he struck his friend in the head, which caused his death.

Figueroa told police he then put Dion's body in a car, drove to a remote area and set it on fire.

Figueroa will remain in detention for 30 days as officials continue their investigation.

A spokesperson with the prosecutor's office said officials sought a warrant for Figueroa's arrest after questioning him about his whereabouts the night Dion disappeared and receiving contradictory information.

Back in Canada, the dead man's nephew Shanny Bolduc, told The Canadian Press that his family had received no information about the arrest from Mexican officials.

Dion's niece, Franceska Dion, told CTV Ottawa that the family believes Figueroa's story is a cover-up of what really happened.

Franceska Dion said they don't believe that Dion instigated a fight, and say they feel Dion was targeted, though they don't know why.

"My uncle was 140 pounds and he wasn't a mean person," Dion said. "This makes no sense for our family."

I have never been to Mexico or do I intend to . We live in the greatest country in the world so why would you want to risk a few days of warm sunshine with the great possibility of getting killed. Stay in Canada and have a great time at home and know that you will not be killed for a little pleasure......

Why is stuff like this still news? We're all aware of the dangers of visiting Mexico and yet we still flock there. You go, you go at your own peril, after all, you DO know what you're getting into.

Mexico is a failed state where petty crime, drugs, serious crimes including decapitation, kidnapping and prostitution are quite common. Furthermore the government and law enforcement officers are thoroughly corrupt. Any person concerned about his family's safety and his or her own personal safety should avoid Mexico at all cost. Canadians should also be warned not to go there for any reason including business despite of all the enticements to visit this God forsaken filthy country of immoral hoodlums . Mexico is the most dangerous place to visit probably a close second to Iraq. I urge all Canadians to avoid Mexico.

This guy will probably get off, due to the fact he got the $$ and probably paid off the authorities.Carrying 20 - 40K around in Mexico only says "come get me". That's a lifetime of wages for most of them.

I don't recall the last time I walked in a crappy Canadian Neighbourhood with more than $100 and was not affraid of losing those $100 to some gangsta schmuck. If you don't do that at home, don't do it abroad. How about them apples? Also, @paul, you are the smartest guy to post in this story so far.

Okay, defiantly a tragic situation for the Dion family, but really... going to Mexico and using prisoners there to make your product? And on top of that, carrying $30,000 with you? Probably not the best idea on Daniel Dion's part.

so.. blah, blah. blah....another Canadian dies in Mexico under unusual circumstances. CTV could host a website for just this stuff alone!

Here we go again. Another Canadian is murdered in Mexico and the Mexican police build another shoddy story that is virtually character assasination of the victim. Just like the people murdered in resorts after they had a couple of drinks. Not only do these people loose their lives, the Mexican police make it look like it was their own fault. My heart goes out to the families.

Sounds like a really bad movie! And apparently he was carrying like $20K cash on him or more, I wonder where that went Mr. Figueroa. I don't believe that story for a minute.

Huh? Yeah; okay. What happened to all the cash Dion was allegedly (reportedly) traveling with? I don't know what the truth is, but, something smells fishy. Regardless, in the end, it's Mexico, and the "facts" can't be relied upon anyway. Follow the money...for my cynical guess is that it has touched the hands of Figueroa and law enforcement officials, and/or prison officials, and/or government officials.

For your information my uncle Daniel Dion wasn't carrying that amount of money. We have no information more. The investigation is still on going. In fact, we have every reason in the world to believe that this crime was ordered so his past and everything has nothing to do with is murdered.
