Heartbreaking and too common, especially among youth. Depression and mental illness is often as fatal as cancer.

Teen daughter of Sens coach remembered in service

Thousands remembered the teenage daughter of a popular NHL coach at a memorial service held in a hockey arena in Ottawa Wednesday, days after she took her own life in her family home.

Daron Richardson was the 14-year-old daughter of former Senators player and current assistant coach Luke Richardson.

Her mother found her in the basement of their family home on Friday, after she "tried to take her life by hanging," the team said in a recent statement.

She was rushed to hospital in critical condition, but succumbed to her injuries.

On Wednesday morning, a two-hour memorial service was held for her at Scotiabank Place, the home arena of the Ottawa Senators.

Her family decided to have such a large public memorial to raise awareness of teen suicide and organ donation.

"The family chose the road that's less travelled, sometimes that road is more difficult, but it doesn't mean that's not the right path to choose," Cyril Leeder, Ottawa Senators team president, said. "They wanted to make something good happen out of a tragedy."

Many of her friends in the hockey community and her classmates from Ashbury College spoke at the service, CTV Ottawa's Catherine Lathem reported.

"We learned that she was a girl who always wanted to make a difference, she had a love of life and she had some really dear friends," said Lathem.

Richardson was remembered as someone who put a smile on people's faces when she walked into a room.

Terry Marcotte, the sports director at CTV Ottawa, said the stories at the service revealed that friendship came easily for Daron Richardson, who had connections from the many cities where her dad played during his NHL career.

Daron's friend Erin Sauve said she remembered "talking about being each other's bridesmaid (and) going to the Olympics."

Daron Richardson's friends now feel as if there is a "missing piece" in their lives, Marcotte said.

None of the Richardson family members spoke at the service.

"Their message was sent through others there…they wanted this day to be about Daron, not about suicide," Lathem reported from outside Scotiabank Place on Wednesday.

Daron Richardson's family is accepting donations to the Royal Ottawa Health Foundation's Youth Program in lieu of flowers.

The Senators postponed a trip to Raleigh, N.C., in order to attend the memorial service.

Senators general manager Brian Murray said "We are all devastated . . . and knowing Luke for as long as I have, it's personally devastating."

After the service, the hockey team will depart for North Carolina where they are due to play the Hurricanes on Wednesday evening.

Senators Captain Daniel Alfredsson said hockey takes a back seat in this situation.

Earlier this week, head coach Cory Clouston told reporters that "everyone wanted to be here" for the service.

Daron Richardson is survived by her father Luke, her mother Stephanie, and her sister Morgan.

Why things like this go on is a complex discussion for another day. For today, from BC,our condolances to the friends and family of this young girl.Experience tells me you will need the support of friends and family to get through this.Losing a child is arguably one of the most painful experiences anyone can suffer.Unless you have been there, you have no idea. You really don't. Good on the Sens,Ottawa, and all those who are making a grand effort to be there for the family. That IS your role in a civil society. Rest in Peace Daron.

Very sorry to hear this - sad when a young person commits suicide - they are too young to be in such despair. I agree the "loved life" statement is in error - something was wrong. Other articles say she did this because of/after an unrevealed accident, but that was just a trigger for something that had been brewing before. There is some (selfish) curiosity about details, but to know what led to it may help others deal with it before it gets to this point. Bullying has been a problem causing teen suicide, and it's come to attention of people, but it still happens - more needs to be done about it.

This is really sad. It's also alarming the level of media coverage being given to a suicide. The media coverage has totally glorified the memorial service; this is why suicides especially by teenagers are not covered in the press and handled delicately. Why are you covering this so much? Because of her socio-economic standing? Her Ashbury link? It's sending the wrong message to depressed teenagers.

I feel terrible about this and saddened that at the young age of 14, she felt the need to end her life. She probably loved life but there are terrible moments that happen that she couldn't handle it anymore. This doesn't mean she didn't love life - she had great friends, loving family, a strong network of people around her and things don't always go right. I've been there and I understand it. RIP Daron, you will be missed.

So many teenagers today are crying out, whether to friends, classmates, parents/teachers, and it seems no one is hearing their cries of pain and lonliness. Teachers no longer can give a student a comforting hug, parents are too busy working to make ends meet, and friends? where is a true one when you need one?

As a society I believe, it is our responsibility to love one another and encourage each other ... build one another up, not tear down. Today and on ... make it promise to yourself and do something kind and loving for someone. Cause you just don't know, you could have just saved their life! I love you all no matter :)

This is very sad. It never makes any sense as to why a beautiful young woman would take her own life. My prayers go out to her family.

There is no easy answer for such a tragic out come. No parent should ever have to see their child go before them. Its heart breaking the pain devastating to those left behind who love them. The “what ifs” fill your mind while your heart bleeds and bleeds. I am no stranger to this pain and I wish I could make it go away for you! We must work together and send a message to our children, to our loved ones that there is another way out…into the light is a good start!
