Environment Minister Jim Prentice will be leaving the government and assuming a high-profile post in the private banking sector.

Prentice, one of the most well-known and senior ministers in the government, made the announcement in Parliament on Thursday afternoon.

Prentice, 54, said that he has accepted a new job with CIBC as vice-chairman, which comes into effect in 2011. Prentice said that he would also be leaving his seat in Calgary by the end of the year.

Prentice, who entered federal politics in 2001, said that he will be leaving his cabinet post effective immediately.

In an interview, Prentice said that he had recently been thinking of shifting gears career-wise.

"Upon reflection, I had decided that I wanted to go back to the private sector. Coincidentally, I was approached by CIBC, and one thing led to another," he told CTV's Ottawa bureau chief Robert Fife.

"So it seems the right thing to do, and my family is very supportive. I'm quite excited about the future."

Prentice said the announcement came after a meeting with the Ethics Commissioner, which presumably centred on his decision to exit his post and take up office in the private sector.

Prime Minister Stephen Harper said that his relationship with Prentice has been one of the most "delightful" of his public career.

Harper added that Prentice is one of the most well-respected MPs in Ottawa, and that he earned the "highest respect" from colleagues on both sides of the floor.

The prime minister noted that Prentice has managed a number of very important cabinet portfolios since the Tories assumed government in 2006.

In a statement released later in the day, Harper thanked Prentice for "nearly a decade" of public service.

Harper mentioned that back in 2002, Prentice "stepped aside in a by-election race" so Harper could run to become the MP for Calgary Southwest.

Prentice also chaired cabinet's operations committee, a powerful position which Harper said was akin to being the government's chief operating officer.

Government House Leader John Baird will temporarily take over the Environment post, the Globe and Mail reported.

CTV's chief parliamentary correspondent Craig Oliver said that Prentice has been unhappy with his current post, following a cabinet shuffle which pulled him out of the Industry portfolio.

"He was not happy when the prime minister pulled him out of Industry and put him into Environment," Oliver said Thursday afternoon from Ottawa.

Before entering politics, Prentice practised law in Calgary, where worked in property rights and environmental issues.

Prentice was once seen as a potential candidate to replace Harper as the Conservative leader.

However, critics have said that the government's Environment portfolio is simply an extension of policies which are drafted in Washington.

While greenhouse gas reduction was seen as a key goal of U.S. President Barack Obama during the 2008 presidential campaign, Republican gains in the House of Representatives this week have likely put those aims on the backburner.

The Canadian Press reported that Prentice has been saying privately that he didn't expect much progress in his portfolio over the next two years.

Liberal house leader and former environment critic David McGuinty said the announcement was "a big surprise."

McGuinty told CTV's Power Play that being an MP is a "tough life" with a lot of demands.

Meanwhile, NDP environment critic Nathan Cullen said that he isn't surprised that yet another new minister will take over the vacated portfolio.

"It's a nearly impossible scenario," Cullen told Power Play. "It's a burnout kind of job, being an environment minister for a prime minister that doesn't care about the environment."

He would have been a great Prime Minister, to bad. But with the level of venom from the opposition parties that are only interested in power, rather than what is in the best interests of the country in the short and long term, who can blame him.

I love reading all these negative comments. If a biography was written claiming that Mother Theresa was a Conservative, all you yahoos would want her stripped of her Sainthood. Ideology is a scary thing and there is no more an ideologue than a Liberal in Canada. At least the Americans know the true meaning of democracy, as was evident this past week in their rejection of the beloved Obama's policies of the past 2 years. Canadians on the other hand will vote Liberal to the day they die simply because that's what they've always done, and to truly exercise their democratic rights is unheard of. It has to be the Natural ruling party or nothing at all. These anti-Conservative comments have been coming in since the day after the election in February 2006. Not even willing to give Harper a chance after going through 13 years of Liberal rule to me seems very narrow minded for Canadians. Canadians aren't as tolerant as they like to think they are!

He did a good job as a Cabinet Minister but the pressure was intense and he finally decided he had to jump from the Environment portfolio..... that second flock of tar sands ducks did him in and pushed him over the edge into a job with a multi million dollar salary. Those Alberta ducks are really getting expensive. Maybe Syncrude should erect poles around its tailing ponds and string wires across the ponds. Attach coloured ribbons to the wires and the ducks will never land there again. It would save millions and keep Cabinet Ministers from fleeing to multi million dollar jobs. This is Canada. Only hockey players deserve that kind of pay check.

Ah yes another "intelligent" comment from our friend the intelligent Liberal. Speaking of birds, do you know how many birds die each year from all of your buddy Dalton McGuinty's precious wind turbines? In one wind park in California alone over 4500 birds, including protected golden eagles, are killed every year. There are hundred's of thousands of birds killed every year all over the world, but the only statistics that people like intelligent Liberal care about are the ones that they use to forward their cause. I challenge Intelligent Liberal (still don't get that name) to stop using gasoline. If you rely on public transit, stop taking the bus. Maybe you should get a solar powered bike.

A problem solved for Mr. Harper. Jim Prentice was actually quite competent. Unfortunately Mr. Harper does not like to surround himself with competent people . Knowledge is always dangerous - even from within your own ranks. I thought he would finish him off by giving him the phony environment portfolio, but Prentice seemed to be wise enough to handle it.

Uh, isn't here something wrong when a lawyer with an environemental background quits leading the country on environmental protection, and immedIatetly starts as a CO-CHAIRMAN of a major Canadian Bank? I have heard of putting these types on board of directors to get publicity for the board, but co-chair is a paid executive posiition running the bank. How the hell does a lawyer get that job? I guess that this is what Jim has being doing for the last 10 years. That is why he was so mad at losing the Industry portfolio. He was making too much money from big business, and now that he has a go nowhere ministry, he is going to cash in from his deals with Industry canada. And grab the big plum (co-chairs just get a check, just ask Edgar Bronfman) Am I just paranoid about public officials or is this a live show of how corruption in Ottawa is working. He has 9 years of public service on his resume. That is why there are funds setup to get poliitcians back into the private sectors because they need the 'alimony' to get them by. This guy didn't need any alimony, and he somehow has the credentials to run a major bank. WOW!

Our loss. This was a very competent MP and a value to Canada. For those who suggest this party is to western, or to Reform oriented,I suggest you get Ontario to nominate, and elect more people from the old Progressive Conservative regime to balance out the Reformers.Harper himself though this might be necessary a couple of years ago. Whatever you do,please,do not turn this country back over to those thieving Liberal liars and spin doctors. The fact that they are now in a coalition with the BLOC should be cause for a charge of treason. And their alliance with the NDP proves they are a socialist party in spite of Micheal Igatieffs claim that they are a centrist party. They are NOT centrist. If they were,I might actually consider voting for them. Mr.Prentice,I wish you and your family well, and I thank you for standing up for Canada, and not bowing to pressure from a litany of foreigners and special interest groups. Well done sir.We can only hope the people of your riding do not elect a Liberal to succeed you.

This is dissappointing news.It is hard to attract high caliber people to assume these types of positions. In the private sector these guys can earn multiple times what they get being a politician, plus they and their family get a life, so why would they bother with politics? Just read this blog and see what kind of crap they have to put up with. Unfortunately, MPs salaries are high enough that it attracts all sorts of under-qualified or non-qualified folks to these posts who are often little more than fast talkers and do little or nothing, or the wrong thing, for our country. This is a critical time for CIBC, and I assure you they did their homework on Prentice. Best wishes Mr. Prentice on getting your life back.

Well said "cara".You hit the nail square on.The technology we have to today lets whiners and parasites beat the crap out of every breath an elected official takes, and all from behind a mask of anonymity, and with no responsibility to even offer up alternatives to policies with which they don't agree. The biggest whiners? The parasites and socila engineers who think setting fiore to police cars and trashing banks is the path to more social programs.Never once will they ever stop to consider who the government had to take the money from,so they could have something for "free" And not one of them is ever likely to grow the courage it takes to lead.Lweading is making tough choices. It's having the courage to do that, even though you know for sure, that sooner or later, even those receiving those "free" programs will turn on you. No.I'm not a devote conservative. But I do know what it takes to lead people.WHile I have had disagreement with both Mr.Prentice and Premier Cambell of BC,I wish them well.Your families will be much happier for your move out of your respective governments. The price you have paid was also paid for by them.I thanks both of you for having the smarts, and the courage to put yourselves and your families in harms way for the benefit of your country, and your nation. BTW. Watch carefully my friends. You will see proof the the fear and hate mongering in this country is coming from, you guessed it,the political left.Trust me.They are mean, greedy, and self absorbed.I remain ashamed to admit I was once one of them--a federal LIBERAL.I have been cured of that, but remain apologetic for the harm my former party inflicted on this once great nation. Nasty, nasty people.Very few with anything positive to offer anyone,or this country.

@Farewell Jim: What have you been smoking Jim? Prentice has been McGuinty's Finance Minister, you remember McGuinty right? You know, the man who has lied to us 9 times, and screwed us over at least that many times. It's Jim Flaherty who works for Harper.

Prentice and McGuinty screwed each of us out of $900 each and every year for improved health care, while creating a level of admin that does nothing for us. The LHIN's give absolutely NO CARE to patients, and apparently have not created anything yet that serves us. ER's are still overcrowded, and they measure taking care of patients in 6 to 34 hours, when what we need is measured in minutes, not hours.

He raised hydro rates by at least 50%. Gas has gone up by 15%. I eat cat food while he eats turkey.

Prentice knows what's in store next election. HE, and ALL of his buds in the Fiberal Party are going down. They'll be lucky to get one vote each. October 2011, they are ALL GONZO.!

Good riddance! He had no interest in the Environment file and actually impeded progress in a number of problem areas including climate change. He was arrogant and argumentative and only cared about protecting industry interests in the oil patch. I'm not surprised that he didn't expect much in his portfolio - he didn't put anything into it. Unfortunately there are no other Conservative MPs that will give a better performance and even if they tried, Mr. Harper would blunt their efforts.

I didn't see this one coming. Certainly an interesting turn of events, but I think it makes some sense. The environmental portfolio has been a mess under the conservatives. They have been unable to be consistent, have constantly changed ministers, have yet to come up with a truly viable energy and climate plan after 3 false starts and Prentice was at risk of being held in contempt of parliament earlier this year due to a huge backlog of reports that hadn't been filed.

Too bad. Jim Prentice is a good man and his leaving office is a prime example of how politics fails the public it is supposed to serve. People of his calibre are not often drawn to political office and if they are, they frequently leave disillusioned and well before they have an opportunity to positively influence public policy. Anyone with vision, honour, integrity, intelligence and balance struggles to reconcile the cutthroat realities of political life with a genuine desire for public service.

Cara

I don't blame him a bit. Why would anyone want to go into politics these days with the disrespect and constant complaining and name calling from the public. The public and media want to know everything about you right down to what gum you chew and how much you paid for it. When you tell them, they call you a liar. We're nothing but a disgruntled, ungrateful society when it comes to anyone serving this country in any capacity. Nothing is good enough. The majority of comments today prove my point. Why would anyone even want to be a politician or public servant when the negative is constantly exaggerated and the positive consistently ignored? We are forcing out good quality people in all parties and levels of government. Lots of good things happen if you'd just look, but then I guess it's more fun to be cranky all the time for little reason.

I thought that if you ran for a government post, you should serve out your term until the next election. Nice that he is offered a job out there, but then, does that mean, if I offer the Prime Minister some cash or even, the opposition some cash, they will jump out of their elected office? I'm sorry, you should serve until your time is done. This, IMO isn't right somehow. I can understand if you committed an office, was dying of a disease, that you should be able to leave, but just because you got a better job offer doesn't sit well with me. Otherwise, if you don't like your member of parliment, perhaps offer him a job full of perks to get him or her out. Yiks... Oh and just because he didn't like his new government position as envrionment minister, doesn't mean anything. He is going to be a vice president at CIBC so he'll be taking orders from someone else again. So his situation hasn't really improved.
