KFC's Double Down sandwich arrives in Canada

Date: Monday Oct. 18, 2010 10:13 PM ET

KFC is gambling that its Double Down will be a hit in Canada, as it unveils the "sandwich" (if it can even be called that) with a massive media campaign.

You'd be hard-pressed to find a Canadian fast-food lover who hasn't heard of the Double Down – the culinary concoction that uses two slabs of fried chicken instead of buns to sandwich together bacon, cheese and KFC "secret sauce."

When the greasy, salt-laden debuted in the U.S. in the spring, gobsmacked nutritionists expressed shock, while food porn lovers salivated. The DD became KFC's most successful sandwich in the company's history, with more than 10 million sold in less than a month.

Now, the Double Down is in Canada and according to Dan Howe, the chief marketing officer of KFC Canada parent, Yum! Restaurants Canada, the excitement is practically palpable.

"We have been amazed by Canada's reaction to Double Down," he said in a new release. "There's a lot of excitement and people tell us they are planning Double Down parties with their friends."

KFC Canada has even launched a Facebook fan page to generate further hype. There, they challenge fans to "Take Down the Double Down," and a Wall of Fame, where Double Down fans can claim "bragging rights" to having the intestinal mettle to try a sandwich that promises almost an entire day's worth of sodium, almost half a day's fat in one sandwich, and a whole lot of grease on their fingers.

The Double Down is just the latest entry in the world of food sensations designed to both flabbergast and fascinate at the same time. And at 540 calories, 30 grams of fat and 1,740 milligrams of sodium, it is a tad outrageous.

But, the Double Down is hardly the most outrageous. It doesn't have even as many calories as KFC Canada's own Classic Sandwich, which boasts slightly more than 1,000 calories.

Nor does it have the fat content of the KFC Wrapstar or Boxmaster (32 and 45 total grams of fat respectively). And a poutine from KFC packs a lot more sodium (2,450 mg).

Meanwhile, Wendy's Baconator boasts 610 calories, 35 grams of fat and 1,130 mg of sodium, while Burger King's Triple Whopper with Cheese has bragging rights to 1,250 calories, a mind-numbing 84 grams of fat and 1,600 mg of sodium.

Still, considering that adults should be aiming for daily sodium intake of 1,500 mg, eating one Double Down throws that goal out the window. And since adult men should aim for no more than 90 grams of fat a day, and women 65 grams, the Double Down could get you almost halfway there – all with no fibre and precious few vitamins.

On the upside? It's low in sugar and carbohydrates.

KFC Canada says its Double Down will be available for a limited lime, only until Nov. 14. But if it sells well – after the initial excitement dies down – this unabashed grease fest could be a permanent fixture on the menu.

I cannot believe this in an age where we are trying to advocate for healthy eating ! Why not just offer a bucket of lard and some salt on the side?

As discusted as I am that this "sandwich" is being put to the market, it still is not as fattening or calorie laden as alot of other things on the fast food menu. I personaly think that a nutrition class should be a manditory part of high school, and not just a one day class, but a semester long health and nutrition course where kids actually learn about what is in food and how to read labels etc etc. The cost of that class would be far less than the cost of the medical bills for this upcoming generation who are almost destined to have diabetis, heart problems etc etc.

Well, at 540 calories, 30 grams of fat and 1,740 milligrams of sodium the heart is going banana till stops, the brain is pulsing, the ambulances running around, the doctors, nurses and hospitals very, very busy, the government is running out of money, people will be extra, extra, extra large, the medicine manufactures getting richer and richer, and our arteries blocked and a good buy to everyone who didn't have yet a heart attache. I don't know what everyone is comlaining about. To each his own and I will certainly be stuffing a few of these down my gullet before the time limit is up. I'm a very healthy young man, 6'1" 175 lbs and I've prepared and eaten much worse at home on numerous occasions (like entire packs of bacon and fried eggs). Don't blame KFC for inventing a sandwich as a cause to make people fat. Blame people who are unable to control themselves for making people fat.

For goodness sakes, first we scream foul whenever anyone even mentions the possibility of paying for one's health care via a private provider, and yet all I seem to see is people complaining about how others shouldn't have the choices to eat what they choose because of the bill on the health care system! I'm all for choice here. If I don't want to wind up gaining weight, I won't eat this. If I want to indulge in the occasional fast food treat, isn't that my own decision?

I don't know what is good about this new KFC sandwich. Too much sodium is probably worse than too much fat in foods, yet this sandwich has tons of fat AND sodium. Health Canada wants food makers to use less sodium. bad for your blood pressure. This sandwich is not a good thing for our diet unless thats all you eat for the entire day and only have it once a month.

My heart hurts just looking at it. Quadruple bypass anyone?

Tax 'em

All food makers who offer up foods over certain sodium and fat levels should be assessed a corporate tax to cover off the ultimately higher health care costs to be born by the taxpayer! Maybe then they'd be as concerned for the health effects of their products as they are for their bottom line

The anti-fat comments here are funny. Do a little deeper reading into the literature and you will find that fat (incl. saturated fat) is NOT "unhealthy". This sandwich is not a good choice, though...its pretty far removed from real food.

I can't wait. If you hate then just good somewhere else to buy food. People have all these talks about eating health. I watch people buy so many pre made dinners at the supermarket, with a lot more salt fat and carbs then this concocktion. fast is easy and fast food is king. i am 30 and in great shape, and eat out often being a tradesmen not working near a microwave or fridge. i will have two of these for a snack this weekend to enjoy while drinking beer after the game and anyone who complains just has nothing better to do... and no worries i wont feed it to my children and no you wont pay my health care... i take good enough care to indulge.... stop whining.. mcdonalds has been around a lot longer and is still much unhealthier....

I'm someone who prides myself on being active, athletic and healthy and I most certainly would not even consider eating this. The only thing that ticks me off (to the point of writing comments and acknowledging the existence of this 'sandwich') is the fact that it will increase the already outrageous amount of money spent on healthcare due to the countless numbers of 'stupid' people who eat themselves into a glutonous coma.
My prediction in the near future: thickened bacon-grease milkshakes.
I suppose on the bright side I can trust nature and that the survival of the fittest will still reign.

Dan from Northern Ont

People who attack it don't even read nutrition labels. It's not healthy, but it's far from the worst out there, and it's not something you'd order everyday. The real health issue is what people eat every day. Condensed soups, lunch meats, canned beans/pastas,. Mac and Cheese, any sort of chip, chocolate bars, etc.

Ironic, isn't it, that this comes from a chain that changed it's personna from Kentucky FRIED Chicken to KFC to escape the adverse connotations of "Fried".

Let the nutritionists express their outrage...if people want to inhale this sandwich, that's their right. If it's a one-off thing every few months, it's not going to kill you; like most foods, moderation is the key, not complete abstention. I've never heard anyone freaking out about an extra-large box of Purdy's chocolate, or about a large box of Shredded Wheat, yet to try and subsist on either wouldn't be a wise choice, either. I think this has more to do with folks not liking KFC than anything else...

Oh come on people, relax a little it' not like KFC is selling cyanide pills wrapped in bacon! Sure this "sandwich" won't win any contests as a healthy dietary option but let's put the whole "fast food as poison" frenzy into perspective. If you eat one of these outrageously caloric fat-fests out of curosity or just because it's time to loosen your iron grip on all aspects of your tighly controlled life and indulge UNLESS you make a habit of eating this kind of pseudo-food you will be fine! We have to stop getting hung up on the relative evil of individual fast food items and focus peoples' attention on moderation. Go ahead and indulge your foulest fat-laden food fantasy but only once in a while. It is actually fast food items that present themselves as healthier alternatives that are a real danger in that they encuorage people to eat overly processed foods more often. No matter what they say, fast food is always overprocessed and not a good choice on a regular basis.

This item has less fat and calories than a Big Mac, Whopper, Quarter Pounder with Cheese, etc. So comparatively it's really not THAT bad.. however It does have a ton of sodium, around 1300mg.

Just had one for lunch and it's quite tasty. Although it is noticeably salty like just about any fried chicken product from KFC.

It is surprising that fast food restaurants would still be marketing this high fat/calorie poison. Are not people more aware of what food to eat to stay healthy?

Why not tax it to death like they do cigars, pipe tobacco and alcohol. People will still buy it and it'll pay down the deficit.

Love it... however can it be long before our gaurdian politicians and bureaucrats step in and again try to take over our decision making processes and ban such a thing. "Hey were going to make another decision for you and until we outright ban the double down, please approach this new entree with extreme caution and if you must induldge, please insure that you are not talking on your cell phone and your helmet is on tightly." Eat it people and enjoy every last calorie.
