Prime Minister Stephen Harper offered a rare glimpse into his own religious beliefs Wednesday when he spoke out against a church in Florida that plans to burn 200 copies of the Qur'an on Sept. 11.

"I don't speak very often about my own religion but let me be very clear: My God and my Christ is a tolerant God, and that's what we want to see in this world," he said.

The prime minister's comments are the latest in a growing international backlash against a firebrand preacher in Florida who plans to burn copies of the Muslim holy book in a bonfire on Saturday, nine years after the Sept. 11 terrorist attacks.

"I unequivocally condemn it," Harper said. "We all enjoy freedom of religion and that freedom of religion comes from a tolerant spirit."

"I don't think that's the way you treat other faiths, as different as those faiths may be from your own."

The controversial plan put forward by Terry Jones, pastor of the Dove World Outreach Center, a small church with 50 parishioners located in Gainesville, Fla., has been widely condemned by both Christians and Muslims.

Harper's condemnation came hours after Defence Minister Peter MacKay joined the growing chorus of those in opposition to the preacher's plan.

In a note sent to The Canadian Press on Wednesday, MacKay said the very idea of such a demonstration is "insulting to Muslims and Canadians of all faiths," and that Canada calling on Jones to "bring people together, not break them apart."

He also said Canada's soldiers in Afghanistan are not fighting against Islam or Islamic beliefs; rather the war they are fighting is against "an extremist and brutal enemy."

Jones, author of a book called "Islam is of The Devil," has stood firm and remains unapologetic about the planned "International Burn a Koran Day."

Jones held a news conference Wednesday afternoon in which he said he intends to carry on with his plan, despite pressure to call off the event.

"As of right now, we are not convinced that backing down is the right thing," Jones told reporters in a brief statement.

On Tuesday, Gen. David Petraeus, commander of U.S. troops in Afghanistan, warned that the initiative will only harm efforts by American soldiers to build bridges and win hearts and minds in Afghanistan.

Petraeus warned that "images of the burning of the Koran would undoubtedly be used by extremists in Afghanistan -- and around the world -- to inflame public opinion and incite violence."

Petraeus spoke with Afghan President Hamid Karzai about the issue on Wednesday, said military spokesperson Col. Erik Gunhus.

"They both agreed that burning of a Qur'an would undermine our effort in Afghanistan, jeopardize the safety of coalition troopers and civilians," Gunhus said, and would "create problems for our Afghan partners ... as it likely would be Afghan police and soldiers who would have to deal with any large demonstrations."

On Wednesday, Brig.-Gen. Christine Whitecross, a Canadian member of the International Security Assistance Force, offered a similar warning.

"The insurgents here, the Taliban, use anything at their hands for propaganda, misinformation, and we're worried if this carries on we could see a spike in violence."

Already, news of the plan has triggered protests in Afghanistan. On Monday demonstrators in Kabul burned an effigy of Jones and threw stones at a passing U.S. convoy.

Ihsaan Gardee, executive director of the Canadian Council on American-Islamic Relations, said the book-burning comes at a time when relations between Islam and the West are already tense.

"This act appears to be a deliberate provocation at a time where mutual distrust... still prevails and there's a sense among many in the Muslim world that there is a war on Islam," Gardee told Canada AM.

"What this incident does is add fuel to the fire and most certainly will be used by extremists to give credence to that perception."

The planned protest has been slammed by the White House, NATO, and the FBI, to name a few.

On Wednesday, U.S. Secretary of State Hillary Rodham Clinton and Defence Secretary Robert Gates both condemned Jones's plans.

During a speech to the Council on Foreign Relations in Washington, Clinton called the plan "outrageous" and "aberrational" and said it does not represent American values.

"It is regrettable that a pastor in Gainesville, Florida, with a church of no more than 50 people can make this outrageous and distrustful, disgraceful plan and get the world's attention, but that's the world we live in right now," Clinton said. "It is unfortunate; it is not who we are."

Speaking through Pentagon spokesperson Col. David Lapan, Gates said officials are not questioning Jones's right to his beliefs.

"We are questioning whether that's advisable considering the consequences that could occur," Lapan said. "Gen. Petraeus has been very vocal and very public on this, and his position reflects the secretary's as well."

Craig Lowe, mayor of Gainesville, Fla., said the church is a "tiny, fringe group and is an embarrassment to our community."

I'm not Muslim. I'm not religious in any sense of the word. However, I do know what the word 'tolerance' means. Situations such as these only serve to confirm how narrowminded and uncompassionate some of our fellow human beings are. This is sad not only to me but to countless others. To the Muslim community, understand that a burning book may be symbolic of hatred to some (it's a cowards way to deal with their own unwillingness to accept others) do not let it burn your faith in those who accept your right to choose your own religious path.

The greater picture is that increasing open hostility towards everyday, normal Muslim people is just another sign that people's tolerance for others is wearing thin again. It seems to happen every 50 years or so - then there's a huge war, and then everyone chills out. Call it a cycle if you will. Sunrise, sunset.

This fringe group of Christians are no different than the small fringe group of Islamic extremists who caused the Sept 11, 2001 tragedy. Both groups bring shame and spread hate among people. The Koran and Jesus of the Christian Bible speak of peace, love and tolerance of others. On Sept 11 2001, when I saw what happened my first thought was of the hate it would cause between people. This is a very sad state of affairs for Christians everywhere. The two religions originate from Abraham and worship the same God. Just in diferent ways. People against this hateful burning event should speak out against it and then speak out in support of the Islamic communities around them.

I find it alarming how weak western society has become. Bibles, flags, and effagies are burned around the world every day. It is not a particularly tasteful thing to do but, this Canadian is not offended by the pastors intentions. I am deeply offended however, by the Canadian media who are making this a leading story! It should not matter to us! We have over 30 million people in this country who make far more important news every day. I am also offended by Canadian politicians who are wasting my money talking about this guy! They should all shut their mouths, stop grandstanding for the media, and do the jobs they were elected to do.

The author and owner of the Quran is Allah. Allah has revealed the Truth to all humanity. It is not a monopoly for the Muslims. Beside the Muslims do not worship the Quran, they worship Allah and follow the Truth and the Truth can not be burned. The Muslims should, therefore, not be offended or outraged by this, Allah will protect his book, if he wishes too.

As for this ignorant, he may be able to burn books, but he can not burn the Truth. I have no doubt that his intended action could be very well be inspired by Allah, himself, to raise and further spread the Truth. Any body who gets offended by the action of this idiot is, I am afraid, an idiot too. So what this fuss is all about. Go home.

Peter Mckay is being a politician and we should expect nothing less. I perhaps think a different word other than insulted is more appropriate, and everyone has their own opinion. To those who think that it's good to burn the books then just ask yourself this. Is it going to accomplish anything meaningful? Is it going to send a real message to the fundamentalists? No, not really. It's going to spur them on though to continue to fight against the infidels. So what's the point of doing it then? In my view it's just a misguided so called "pastor" who is searching for attention and notoriety. Whether or not we burn the Qu'ran will not change their minds one little bit. So for that reason it's an exercise in futility that will ultimately backfire and cause more harm than good.

It seems that some people forget about the fundamental right to freedom of expression. As long as during the burning of the Qur'an nobody is harmed, let it burn.Democracy has to be defended against any attempts at abridgement, even at a price of offending sensibilities of various groups. As long as people are not physically harmed or discriminated by belonging to a particular group, any form of expressing one's opinion, including burning a religious book, should not be curtailed.

MacKay is right. Burning a Quran is insulting to everyone. If you disrespect someone else's religion, you've agreed it's OK for others to disrespect yours. And mine. But it's also insulting to burn down churches, burn bibles, execute Islamic converts to Christianity, and to murder "infidels" whose only crime was to be living in Islamic countries. Pastor Jones is providing Muslims with an object lesson in what it means to "do unto others..."That said, Pasor Jones needs an object lesson in forbearance and compassion. He is inviting a backlash against innocent victims. I imagine he believes he is extolling Christian values. I disagree.

Also I firmly believe Minister MacKay speaks on behalf of a LARGE majority of Canadians. There is always a few with more hatred then brains.

As a Canadian I am very happy to see so many comments on this site supporting Minister MacKay's position. To those opposing because of the acts of terrorists let me put this in perspective.Islamic Extremism is to Islam like the KKK is to Christianity. Both extremist groups attempt to rap their hate in the veil of faith but at the end of it they do not represent the majority of their people or their faith. This act will only anger moderate and mainstream Muslims, and push more angry young people into the extremists hands. The US government should stop this, certainly they can use National security as an excuse. This man is nothing but a bigot. Canada has a vibrant and peaceful Muslim community. They are our fellow citizens, neighbors and friends. An attack on their beliefs is an attack on us as a country and community. The only way to stop the cycle of hate, is to work together. Muslim, Christian, Buddist, etc. All religions who practice their faith peacefully deserve the respect of Canada. The terrorists were not Muslims, they were terrorists trying to hide behind Islam.

For those of you complaining that this guy is "speaking for you as a Canadian", however he is not saying what you feel, he is speaking in a manner which encompases Canadian values. Canadian law, and the Canadian way values peace, and respect for all religions and races, and if we have a problem with something, we handle the issue in a non-violent and mature way. A church burning the Qur'an is an action which is not condoned by Canadian law or true Canadian lifestyle. So I'm sorry, but he is speaking for you as Canadians. It is truly frightening that a so-called "small church with 50 parishioners" can capture the attention of the world by just planning to light a fire. It is frightening because humans attach far too much importance to symbolic objects or totems like bibles, flags and Qur'ans -- and other sacred paraphernalia of states and religions. Ironically it is a forbidden in the Qur'an to create objects of worship which is what we have here. As a "Canadian" I'm quite insulted that Peter MacKay proposes to speak on my behalf as a Canadian. There is no "pan" singular Canadian thought no matter how much the Canadian media tries to "social engineer" our collective thought process or corral us into a 1 thought "brainwash" lock and step mandate. No way! Burn the books...they certainly have no trouble with their honor killings, threats and terrorism against their own and the rest of the world. So suck it up buttercups because the intimidation, bullying and threats only go so far before we start pushing back and in your face too! Maybe after a good dose of reality you'll learn a lesson and fix your own backyard for a change.

Muslims sure seem, at least, 'devilishly' prickly. The Qu'uran has come to represent the violent anti-thesis of free thought. If barbaric fanatics have the right to rally behind it as their flagship, others sure have the right to take a dump on it. Put Christianity and all the other religions down, if you must, but none of them belong down there with Islam. I suppose some of you fair minded types would agonize if Mein Kampf was deliberately desecrated? The real desecration is the books.

How is tackling "extremist" Muslims with a provocative act any more "insulting" to Canadians than "sharia law" where upon Islam condemns women, homosexuals and others they deem bad as worthy of dying by a gruesome "stoning to death" with slews of men pitching rocks at someone till they die? Terrorism, suicide bombings is 'insulting" to Canadians. The murder of a Dutch film director "Theo Van Gogh" by Islamic extremists because he challenged them is "insulting" to Canadians. The threats to Salman Rushdie because he dare challenge Muslims with a book is "insulting" to Canadians. The burning of USA flags with shouts of "Death to America" is insulting to Canadians. The burning in effigy of our representatives of the free world is "insulting" to Canadians. Why is Islam given a free pass to insult, threat, murder and "we" are not allowed to push back and make a point? This is like letting 1 psycho in the human family rule and intimidate others into submission "or else"! Is that what we've come to when we allow ourselves to be silenced by intimidation and threats? That is sick! It's like letting an abuser continue because you're afraid of them.Extreme Islam is "insulting" to Canadians and it needs to clean up its own act if they want respect from anyone. You cannot "demand" respect. You earn it!

If this guy was a Christian he would be telling them how great Jesus Christ is and how Jesus is the healer, the deliverer and the saviour today. I spoke with a muslim man from Iran one time and spent 3.5 hours telling him about the miracle working Jesus Christ and what he has done for me, about the miracles signs and wonders I have witnessed and what he can do for you and never once had to talk about Islam or the Quran let alone burning the book. Remember what the Bible says that in this day they would be transformed, "masquerade", as angels of light and that they would fool the very elect if it were posible. That they would have a "form of godliness but deny the very power thereof". This "preacher" needs to be born again.

Thank you CTV for not calling this guy an "Evangelical Christian" as I've read in other reports. If this man was a true follower of Christ he would find a Muslim family who was hungry and give them food, he would find a way to get medicine to a Muslim person who couldn't afford it, and he would provide shelter, and a bed for anyone who needed it. It's called 'love your neighbor as yourself". The Bible clearly states that you can't overcome evil with evil. You overcome evil with goodness. God requires his people to act justly, to love mercy, and to walk humbly with him. And yes, "Christians" have seriously missed the mark on this in history.

Ignorant? Yes. Offensive? Indeed. However, burning the Koran (Qur'an) is lawfully entitled under the freedom of expression we enjoy here in the civilized West. I fully support the Reverend's right to be an insensitive and provocative religious jackass. The only people who don't understand, or hold contempt for, what freedom represents are those backward, terroristically murderous thugs adhering to Islamic extremism, who cherish this overhyped event as an EXCUSE to harden their hateful ideological cause. (Actually, frankly, many misguided and hypocritical liberals also fail to recognize what our civilized democratic culture upholds.) Civilized Muslims throughout the world should understand that, in the West, we don't barbarically kill, maim, or physically handicap those who misbehave. (It is not a "crime" to offend or disrespect someone, or a religious group. Burning a book in protest, even a religious one, is not a de facto display of "hate," folks.) Thanks, Mr. MacKay, for expressing Canada's justifiable disgust. You're a politician, doing the politically-correct thing. Certainly, upstanding Muslims deserve the tip of the hat and defensive posture. Our sworn enemies on the other hand, here and abroad, radicalized Islamic fundamentalists, deserve our commitment to eradicate them like a lethal disease. No apologies to them. I couldn't care less about their sentiments.

This is just a further demonstration that any religion can be dangerous when exercised with excessive zealotry and an ignorant, hate-filled heart. In the realm of violent confrontation, an extremist is an extremist whether he holds a bible, torah, koran or privately written manifesto while attempting to incite fellow believers. While I am glad that I possess a rational mind that can navigate the complexities of the world without heeding the poisonous rhetoric of any religious movement I regret that there are not enough of us in the world and most humans fall prey at some level to this kind of incitement. As all these groups fight to get revenge on each other the world as we know it will be slowly destroyed and each will claim some sort of bizzare victory based on prophesies from their respective holy books and they will fail to see the irony of self-fullfillment in this outcome.

This is a tiny fringe church that knows how to manipulate the media. Always, the media takes a non existent issue and makes it a world-wide media circus. If everyone agrees it is a dangerous thing for this church to incite the ire of the Islamic community [which is the greater issue - why does Islam fear and why do we all fear Islam so much - Allah can't be much of a god if a book burning is so devastating], then why did the media take and promote this. A wise journalist should have simply said - "let the National Enquirer have this story."

I find it interesting that everyone feels that this is wrong. Are these same individuals feeling that it is okay to build a Mosque at a place where followers of this religion have caused so much death, destruction and sorrow? While this desplay shouldn't be allowed so too the application for the mosque should be denied. As I have been tought better than to be closed minded I cant help but to keep reminding myself that everything I have ever needed to know about Islam I learned on 9-11.

Is there any way that the madmen and women in that church can be stopped from the book burning? Could they be charged with reckless endangerment vis a vis the soldiers from all nations in Afghanistan and elsewhere as well as western society in general? His actions and those of his followers don't just affect Americans! The arrogance is beyond words!

It would be nice to see the world condemn all the churches and bibles burned by Muslims in the same manner they are condemning an act that has only been proposed. But that would not fit the narrative now would it?

Mackay does not know what he is talking about.SUDDENLY terrorists are going to get mad at us if a fringe American preacher from Georgia has a little campfire? It seems to be okay for Jones to burn the Qu'aran in response to the Islamics burning an effigy of Jones in Kabul, not only that they threw rocks at a a US envoy but Jones isn't planning too throw any stones at Muslims so who is the bad guy.

So let me get this straight. Radical muslims fly planes into our buildings, cut off peoples heads, burn our flags, stone and throw acid on girls faces, and are still in the process of trying to figure out any way possible to attack us, and we aren't supposed to do anything that might upset them? Heaven forbid that we might actually burn a book, give me a break.

Burning books is generally not considered an acceptable practice. The Nazis have been severely castigated over the years for doing so; there is no percentage in a nation being associated with book burning. Rev. Jones obviously does not agree with anything that is written in the Qu'ran, however, one is always able to learn something from that which you don't believe in even if it is how not to conduct ones life. Burning the Qu'ran will not benefit anyone and will do nothing to bring harmony into the world. We have young men and women serving in countries where we are trying to promote peace and a more tranquil life style; perhaps Rev. Jones should think past the end of his nose and consider those young folks.

Burning the Quran is disrespectful to Muslims and in the name of treating others as you would be treated shouldn’t be done. However you must ask yourself would the reaction of the Christian community be equally as violent if an Imam were burning Bibles? Of course Christians wouldn’t like it either, but we all know there would not be threats of violence and an international media outrage at the prospect. Radical Islam disrespects western culture and faith on a daily basis and yet the media and the government tells us we are intolerant for not liking this. Why must we continue to tiptoe around Islam? It is a true double standard! Yes burning Qurans is wrong because Jesus told us to treat others the way that we want to be treated. This is good advice for Christians AND Muslims.

Mr. Jones is obviously no follower of Christ, for this in no way reflects Jesus's command to "love others as you would yourself". There is no love in Jones's intended action; only hate. Jones has been quoted as saying that we (the Church, I suppose) has to take a stand at some point. What is he standing for with such actions as these that he is proposing? I hope people of any faith see Jones as an individual, rather than someone who speaks for all Christians, or for anyone else at all. I pray he does not follow through with this.- the Rev. It is not insulting to me as a Canadian. What is insulting to me as a Canadian is having people come to this country expecting their women to wear burkas; practice 'honour killings' and try to force our legal system to accept Sharia law. As I see it, this kind of over the top activity (burning the Koran) is simply 'reaping what you sow'. All those bleeding hearts out there full of outrage, try to keep in mind that in their eyes you are an infidel, unworthy of consideration, to be killed if the opportunity presented itself.

This is the worst thing anyone can do and by that I mean giving this moron world wide media coverage...exactly what he is looking for. People are a lot more intelligent than they get credit for when it comes to seeing through these dime a dozen preachers who are only in it for the money and publicity. I don't think we should waste one more minute of news on this low life.

Since he has a right to go ahead and burn the Qurans because of his constitutional right, the muslims in Manhattan also have a right to build their community centre near ground zero because of that same constitution.

I'm a Canadian and a catholic. This "pastor" is a douche. Where does he or anyone get off telling people that one religion is better then another. No religion is better then another, humans are all created equal. We just all have different beliefs. Just because a handful of radicals are out to cause problems, doesn't give anyone the right to condem a culture or religion. Karma will come back to bite him....I hope it does too.

This is of course idiotic. You don't win hearts by burning books sacred to others. Respect should be the password. But, on the other hand, extremism provokes extremism and the muslims can do much to ease the tensions by coming out loud and clear against their fanatics.

I think he was pushed to take matters into his own hands. I have a teenage son and if he was involved with a drug dealer I would be furious and try anything to save him like this father did for his daughter. Why do police often say they can't do anything until it's too late? Whether it be a drug dealer or an abusive spouse, the police can't seem to do anything until something really bad happens. In this case they could have raided the drug dealers home and arrested him. The whole town knew what was going on in that house but yet the police chose to do nothing. Release this man and give him a medal for doing the right thing by his daughter. I can't wait to see the episode on W5, I will certainly be watching this one.
