ST. JOHN'S, N.L. — Chevron says it has finished drilling Canada's deepest ever exploration well off Newfoundland without any safety incidents.

The well made national headlines as drilling began in May in 2,600 metres of water.

Provincial politicians were on the defensive as the project went ahead despite an oil spill disaster in the Gulf of Mexico.

Chevron spokesman Leif Sollid says drilling wrapped up last week but results won't be made public for up to two years.

He says the oil company has safely drilled more than 300 deep-water wells around the world.

The board that regulates oil activity off Newfoundland tightened safety measures after a BP rig in the gulf exploded in April, unleashing a massive oil spill.

The Canada-Newfoundland and Labrador Offshore Petroleum Board required Chevron to report daily to an oversight safety team and provide results of blowout equipment tests, among other precautions.
