A prominent Canadian Muslim group is calling for the condemnation of the doctrine of armed jihad and says there is a "serious problem" with radicalized Canadian youth in light of the recent terror arrests in Ottawa.

"This is not something that comes as a total surprise . . . we have a problem," Raheel Raza of the Muslim Canadian Congress told CTV.ca Thursday. "There is a serious problem among Canadian Muslim youth and if we don't address this now, it can culminate into something dangerous."

The Muslim Canadian Congress says that the accused must be treated with the presumption of innocence, but Raza says the situation can be used to open a dialogue on radicalization within the Muslim community.

"We have to stand up and tackle this," she said, adding that she thinks the community needs to start asking itself tough questions about the radicalization of some youths and where those messages are coming from.

Despite the recent controversy in the United States regarding the "Ground Zero" mosque, Raza says that she is not worried about a backlash against Canadian Muslims, saying there will always be "hate-mongers."

"There are always going to be bigots, we can't stop speaking out against radicalization just because we are afraid of a few bigots and hate-mongers," the outspoken activist and author said. "Those people who are sensible . . . will understand what we are talking about."

Raza added that she knows she is not being "politically correct" but says she is speaking out because she "loves my faith and my country."

The Canadian Jewish Congress commended the Muslim Canadian Congress for its statement.

"We are heartened by the statements of the Muslim Canadian Congress . . . calling for Muslim leadership in Canada to condemn irrefutably the doctrine of armed jihad and for the 'mosque establishment' to acknowledge and repudiate the serious threat of homegrown extremism," CEO Bernie Farber said in a statement Thursday.

The Canadian Islamic Congress, one of Canada's largest Muslim organizations, said they are waiting for more information before commenting on the story.

Imam Zijad Delic, executive director of the Canadian Islamic Congress, told CTV.ca that leaders would be discussing the case with the RCMP and commenting Thursday evening.

The Muslim Canadian Congress is considered a liberal Muslim organization, but recently announced its opposition to the building of a mosque near Ground Zero in New York.

"We believe the proposal has been made in bad faith and, in Islamic parlance, is creating 'fitna,' meaning 'mischief-making,' an act clearly forbidden in the Qur'an," the group said in a statement.

Steve T asked Dubious Duncan: do you feel threatened when a televangelists calls for some form of violence against a given group? I might if I were the target of the threat. But mostly, as a Christian, I feel ashamed of those who nominally share my faith but use it to spread hatred. I imagine many Muslims feel similarly ashamed by the behaviour of their radicals - hopefully, enough so that they act to stamp out such groups.

I am glad to hear members of the Muslim community speak out against radicalism. I would really like to hear Muslim leaders detail the content of Surah 9, in the Qur'an.It is too bad CTV will not allow links. USC has an excellent translation (3 versions) of this Surah. STOP the Bible/Qur'an comparisons with violence...that is OLD TESTAMENT. There is a certain message about "turn the other cheek" in the New Testament. As I understand it, the "newer" the Surah, the more value it holds(just like Christianity) and Surah 9 is the newest."So when the sacred months have passed away, then slay the idolaters wherever you find them, and take them captives and besiege them and lie in wait for them in every ambush". (009.005)Until passages like that quoted are renounced and acknowledged as the root of "radicalism", I will remain, as politically incorrect as it is, sceptical of Islam's so called peaceful nature.

As a 16th generation Canadian with French and Aboriginal roots I don't think the English version of what should be done about terrorism is going to work. Consider what is going on in the U.K. and understand that is how Canada will end up if we went in that direction. The real solution is a more American one with the establishment of real freedom of speech, gun rights. and serious penalties for people who make bombs.

Why don't the muslims police their own? Turn the would be terrorists in and let the law take over. Oh I forgot the Government isn't proactive at keeping potential terrorists out of our country..

I too applaude the Muslim Canadian Congress for this statement. However,as stated by "Max in Vancouver", "talk is cheap". When Ujjal Dosanjh dared to speak about radicals in the Sikh community,he got beat up by peopole within his own community. In BC,the people who blew up Air India are heros in the Sikh community. How about the Tamils denouncing the people from their community that were recently jailed in the USA for buying heat seeking missiles? How about denouncing the abuse of our refugee system by the recent que jumpers arriving in Vancouver? How about supporting efforts to make sure only genuine, peace loving Muslims get accepted as refugees or immigrants? How about, instead of hiding people from your communities who have been refused as immigrants, you help get them out of the country. No.I'm not a bigot. I also realize that most of the people,Muslims included, who immigrate to Canada are NOT terrorists or criminals.
But here's the thing,if you are not with us in our fight against terrorism or the abuse of our generous immigration system,do not be surprised if Canadians assume you are against us,in favour of your own communities. Welcome to those who want to join us in building a great nation. But if you are absent from the fight against terrorism and abuse of Canadian values, regardless of what your papers say,you will not be seen as Canadians.Just people from somewhere else, now living in Canada. "Canadians of Convenience". You do your faith great harm when you defend those among you who really are criminal,or who don't respect Canadian culture and history. If you don't police your own, people will assume you are "Canadians of Convenience".

I'm not sure how to react to her comment at this moment in time. It could be that the Muslim community is asking their spokesperson to come forward at a time like this to calm the public fear about the crimes that was about to be commited by their own people. This could be a diversion before there are reactions from the public fear that all Muslims would be stigmatized as terrorist. Our Gov't needs to toughten the laws to protect ALL Canadians.

@Steve TObviously you have heard a Televangelist preaching violence toward some group, or you likely would have not made that comment. Perhaps you could enlighten us on when and where you heard such a statement. I applaud the non violent Muslims for their statements but, the radicals that are in Canada have to be outed and the word has to get out that if they decide to do the crime here, then they better be prepared to do lots of time in an institution.

Hey Steve T when's the last time a televangelist flew a plane into a buidling killing 330 innocents. Just wondering...It is a natural reaction to start fearing a certain group of people because of historic events. It's human nature. whether or not it's right is not the point. The same thing goes for a lone female walking through Central Park in NY at night. Hey probably nothing is going to happen, but history has shown that something might. We are not all perfect humans like you Steve,.

To a Canadian Muslim. With all the protests going on around the world and especially in Canada and the US over a wide variety of issues (usually against the government) why are there never any protest rallies on Parliament Hill to decry the killing and violence perpetrated by radical Muslims? Perhaps these organizations that you mention would have more clout or exposure if they organized such a rally once in awhile.

Consider the poor results in the U.K. and know that is what Canada is going to become unless a better more American-like solution is established. We need freedom of speech, guns, and serious penalties for people who make bombs.

'Muslim Canadian' says it's the Media's fault!Has to be someone's fault i guess.I certainly couldn't be the fault of Muslims that Western Muslims want to blow up the countries they live in.He says that 'The media has added fuel to the fires of discrimination'......Just how the Media,or anyone else for that matter,is responsible for the World at large equating Muslims with terrorism is beyond me.If it walks like a duck, quacks like a duck....etc;etcA good first start is maybe to get past this group system of 'denial' and blaming 'Islamaphobia',any kind of 'phobia'/religious intolerance/racism/bigots in the woodwork and start looking a wee bit closer to home.....I'm getting just a little tired of hearing these excuses....ad nauseam!!

If there were Roman Catholics (for example) running around the world blowing up people and terrorizing countries in the name of Christ, I would most definitely expect a major attempt by Rome to disenfranchise themselves from those causing any terrorist activities. We don't see that happening with Muslims for the most part which causes many to think they must condone these actions and agree with the notion of forced Islamization of the west as they have tried to do in France, England and Holland. We aren't interested in that here in Canada and we will fight against that with vigor. The onus is on the Muslim community of Canada to prove themselves separate from these actions.

A problem with Muslim terrorism in Canada. No kidding? I am surprised. They do not exist in isolation. Would it be too much to ask that those who know who they are report them. I realize it is only Christian lives but we've been here some time and were getting to like the place. Besides which, we're still feeling a little betrayed by a Sikh community that sat quietly by while an Air India jet was blown up. Leave your quarrels somewhere else. If you're really not sure if you'll fit in to this tossed salad of a community, then please don't come. If you are unwilling to educate your children please don't dump them on our society. Let them live in Iraq or Pakistan or somewhere where the hell of Christianity won't bother them. I consider myself a tolerant person, much like our Prime Minister, but I am fed up.

It is not for Canadians to prove themselves "reasonable" as Raheel Raza of the Muslim Canadian Congress has said. It is up to Canadian Muslims to prove that what they espouse is reasonable. Many Canadians are dubious of the silence emanating from the Muslim community at large. It would appear that Muslims between themselves cannot agree whether the Quran preaches peace or not. Why else for the silence??

If there ever was an opportunity by the moderate, peaceful and "good" Muslim community to reach out to the rest of Canada....its now. They need to organize public marches if they have to in order to show Canada and the rest of the world that they truly are against the Muslim fanatics that breed and operate within their eviroments. They need to condemn Muslim extrmemists and Muslim terrorism in no uncertain terms. By these actions, clearly this is not the way to show sensitivity and love towards their neighbours which is what their Koran preaches. Nothing could be further from this preaching when their own kind engages in our medical fields only to end up killing the people they pretend to wish to heal. Its time to separate themselves from the fanatics not only by their words but also by their actions. They are openly admitting that this recent event will certainly do much harm to the Muslim communitty....so why not take advantage of it and denounce this hate, anger and public violence by deeds and actions. Our Canadian patience with this whole matter of Muslim culture is wearing thin because we simply can no longer tell the difference between good and evil when it comes to identifying threats against our country.

Bravo to the Muslim Canadian Congress. I was impressed by their statement 2 weeks ago regarding the insensitivity of the Cordoba House/Park 51 project and now I am impressed again. At last, REAL followers of Islam doing the right thing.Thank you. I am proud to stand beside you as a fellow Canadian.

Lets hope that the various news agencies give it as much legs as they do the terrorists themselves. I have felt a tiny bit of encouragement lately as various Canadian Muslim groups have been making bold and non-compromising statements condemning violence. No "buts", not trying to justify anything because of the Satan of the West... my fellow Canadian's roundly condemning violence. The trouble will be getting that message out far and wide, good an loud

I am a proud Muslim Canadian and I believe in the teaching of quraan. Nothing in Islam tells me to hate or hurt any other. Unfortunately, few people who believe that they are Muslims have hurt more Muslims around the world than any other. Also, the media is helping those extremely narrow minded people and has been the oil on the fire of discrimination. I teach my kids about love, peace and values and I am sure that any decent real Muslim is doing the same wherever they are. Unfortunately, The majority in North America had formed opinions around Muslims and Islam and made it synonomus with Terrorism as the media wanted. Being corrupt, criminal, or a bad person in general should not have anything to do with your religion or beliefs. I am certain that people will eventually know how to distinguish between a good Canadian and a bad Canadian, a good human and a bad human.

Good for them, for admitting a problem. However, I dont think this problem will easily be tackled. Most youth of any religion, or race thrive on condemnation of their choices. Rebelion and stupidity has effected most of us I would say in our formitive years, and to have someone to tell us to stop would if you recall only give us more gumption to continue.Plus Muslim youths more than offten may feel like outsiders given their cultre is vastly differant from White and Black Canadian cultures which make them band together and feel part of something. So IMO I think this is only the tip of the iceberg. Adressing an issue is good, but offten wont do much to stop someone who is bent on their desired path.

To the Muslim Communities:Please don't be tou=o harsh in your condemnation of some of us when we express the view that we are somewhat distrusting of Muslims. Especially the youth and those who are insistent on demanding special treatment regarding "dress codes". (Viewed as radicals)The "bad apples" are the one who cause such distrust. Please help "police" your communities as you know better than most who and what is the source of potential problems. I'm sure some non radical and law abiding Muslims knew about what was going on. Now the question is, did they do anything about it or simply turn a blind eye?

She says that some Canadians are bigots? Really, we are not the ones trying to blow people up, your members are. We do not like to live near or live nearby people who are trying to do us harm. This is very simple. You can call us bigots all you want but we want to live peacefully, this is not too much to ask. You came here on your own free will, leave and go back if you are not happy.

All Canadian Muslim organizations have condemned the terrorist plots. The organization featured here enjoys very little popularity though among Canadian Muslims. Our media usually host them while eliminating other organizations because they say what the media want to hear! They are to some extent the Conservative government's own Muslim organization. Other organizations such as CAIR-Canada and the Canadian Islamic Congress represent better the opinions of Canadian Muslims.

Dubious Duncan: do you feel threatened when a televangelists calls for some form of violence against a given group? It's not much different than when a radial Islamist does the same. One individual pursuing a "jihad" and claiming to represent God doesn't translate to all individuals in that group believing the same thing!

To all Canadian Muslims: My belief as a white (raised) Christian Canadian is that you are just like me. Hard working, honest people who believe in essentially the same things as I do. Family, hard work, honesty and treating your fellow man with dignity and equality.I deplore all Muslims being dumped into a category as potential terrorists. It is utter nonsense and it would drive me nuts if I were a moderate law abiding Muslim to have to live with that. Having said that, I applaud the Congress on their awareness of the issues that face their young people and the potential to radicalize them. The young and idealistic have always been and always will be the target of extremists. You have my support and hope that the young men and women in the Muslim communities across Canada will see the benefit in what the Qu'aran is truly preaching. Love, tolerance and peace.

As a 7th generation English Canadian I feel threatened by Islam in this my country. I view these recent arrests as only the tip of a dangerous iceberg that will only become more threatening as the population of Islamic Canadians increases. I am discouraged by the lack of condemnation of Jihad by all Islamic groups who claim to be loving and peaceful. This nation has done its utmost to accommodate these groups. It is time for Islam to prove its worthiness of acceptance. Time to give as well as take.

Happy to read that there is serious concern about these radicals in the Muslim community. But will the leaders carry through and develop a game plan to help rid the country of this insanity? First and foremost, I would suggest they find a means of ridiculing those bent on causing destruction within our borders. Expose that type of thought for the stupidity it is. No one wants to be associated with idiots.
