CTV National News: Robert Fife on the documents
More than 90,000 secret U.S. military documents have been leaked online, showing a grim assessment of the war in Afghanistan. Some of the revelations that were revealed appear to differ from what Canadians have been led to believe.
CTV News Channel: Scott Taylor, military analyst
A former Canadian soldier and military analyst says the leak will not endanger Canadian troops nor will it change the tactical situation having this information made public. He says there will be an impact, but it will be more on the public's support of the war.
CTV Edmonton: Scott roberts on the leak
It's the largest information leak in U.S. military history and there are fears it could cost Canadian lives.

A classified document that was part of a torrent of secret files released to the WikiLeaks website suggests four Canadian soldiers died from friendly fire, not a Taliban attack, in a 2006 incident.

At the time, the Canadian government said that the four soldiers died "as they fought to drive Taliban fighters" from a region near Kandahar on Sept. 3. However, the leaked document said that friendly fire from American forces was responsible for the deaths.

A spokesperson for Defence Minister Peter MacKay said the leaked document was incorrect.

"MacKay's office insists the four Canadian soldiers were killed in a firefight with the Taliban. They say the only Canadian who was killed by friendly fire died the next day, on September 4, 2006," CTV's Ottawa Bureau Chief Robert Fife said Monday night.

It's possible the discrepancy could be part of a miscommunication between U.S. and Canadian officials.

The Canadian soldiers killed on Sept. 3, 2006 were: Sgt. Shane Stachnik, 30, Warrant Officer Richard Francis Nolan, 39, Warrant Officer Frank Robert Mellish, 38, and Private William Jonathan James Cushley, 21.

The revelations come as governments, the media and policy analysts attempt to digest 92,000 secret U.S. documents on the Afghan war which went live on the Internet Monday.

Several European NATO members have expressed concern that the fallout the leak of confidential documents could extend well beyond the Internet -- and could even affect the war itself.

The U.S. records cover six years of the war in Afghanistan, including previously unknown accounts of civilian deaths and targeted attacks on Taliban members.

The files also reveal that the Taliban have used heat-seeking missiles, which is something that NATO has never publicly acknowledged.

One such missile was used to shoot down a U.S. Chinook chopper three years ago, according to the documents.

That May 2007 missile attack led to the death of Canadian combat photographer Cpl. Darrell Priede and six other NATO troops.

So far, NATO has declined comment on the release of the U.S. documents. But representatives from NATO member countries say they hope the leaks do not pose problems for the current war effort.

German Foreign Minister Guido Westerwelle warned that "backlashes" could result from the 91,000 U.S. military documents posted online by the WikiLeaks organization on Sunday.

British Foreign Secretary William Hague said that with recent progress being made in Afghanistan, he hoped "any such leaks will not poison that atmosphere."

"We are working hard with our allies on improving security on the ground and increasing ... the capacity of the Afghan government, so we are not going to spend our time looking at leaks," Hague said Monday before attending a European Union meeting.

Another EU official told The Associated Press that the organization "wants to stay as far from this as possible."

In Washington, White House national security adviser Gen. Jim Jones said the leaks "put the lives of Americans and our partners at risk."

Col. Dave Lapan, a Defence Department spokesman, said the military would need "days, if not weeks" to determine "the potential damage to the lives of our service members and coalition partners."

The Pentagon is investigating the source of the leaks, and has detained Bradley Manning, a former Army intelligence analyst in Baghdad, for allegedly transmitting classified information.

The military said the leaks could have come from anyone with secret-level clearance.

In Kabul, the Afghan government said it was "shocked" by the release of the documents, while arguing that much of the information was not new.

Canadian references

In Ottawa, Foreign Affairs Minister Lawrence Cannon told reporters that the Canadian government is concerned that "operational leaks could endanger the lives of our men and women in Afghanistan."

When questioned about a leaked report that suggested a Canadian was among the casualties in a helicopter that was brought down by a heat-seeking missile, Cannon said that any incidents involving Canadian military members are handled by "the investigative arm of the Canadian Forces."

Another leaked report indicated that the U.S. wanted Canada to put pressure on Saudi Arabia and South Africa, two countries where the Americans believed Taliban fundraising was taking place.

On Monday, Pakistan's ISI said the accusations that it had close links to the Taliban were false.

And on Sunday, Husain Haqqani, Pakistan's ambassador to the U.S., said the documents posted by WikiLeaks "do not reflect the current on-ground realities."

Haqqani also said Pakistan is jointly working with the U.S. and Afghanistan, "to defeat al Qaeda and its Taliban allies militarily and politically."

Most of the documents are considered "raw intelligence" reports collected by junior officers that are then passed on to analysts for further review.

In London, WikiLeaks founder Julian Assange told reporters that the leaked documents show evidence of war crimes, though "it is up to a court to decide really if something in the end is a crime. That said … there does appear to be evidence of war crimes in this material."

Assange said WikiLeaks has access to another 15,000 Afghan files, though they are currently being vetted by the organization.

I supported Canada participating in this war and I would still like to because I continue to believe in the reasons we went to war. But now it seems that the countries that are in there don't really have much fight left in them. Then we have these leaks which make it sound like this is another Keystone Cops episode. To the Americans I say, hurry up and get your 'surge' going. To our Government I say, finish what you started. Otherwise the Taliban will be back in power in that country within a year of the allies pulling out. Maybe the Soviet Union's experience was an object lesson for us.

Treason is the only thing that can be said about this not only could it ultimately cost all members from the coalition forces some lives but it also could have further implications on the war its self , The people that had the nerve to leak this information on to the internet knowing full well that it could be read and or received by the enemy of the American troops should be tried as a spy and a traitor which is still punishable by way of death.

If the Canadian government was sincerely concerned about the safety of Canadian troops they would not have permitted Canadian troops to engage in what has been declared by the UN to be an illegal war. Those who parrot the lines that the release of this 'classified' information 'endangers the troops' or puts national security at risk do not seem to grasp the fact the simple fact participation in the illegal, pre-emptive war as part of a coalition of the willing refuse to recognise that simple participation in the war has risked national security much more that the release of the governments secrets about what is really occurring in afghanistan under the premise of bringing freedom and democracy to Afghanistan.

I would suggest forcing Wikifreaks to move their offices and personnel to a building on the outskirts of Khandahar. That way they will be able to experience, in a very meaningful way, the reality of the situation in Afghanistan. I'm sure that the insurgents (read terrorists) will welcome them with open arms (pun intended).

Leonard George

If there is evidence of war crimes in the documents, then of course it should be investigated. Are suicide bombings of civilians and planting IEDs war crimes by the Taliban? Of course. But if NATO forces engage in war crimes too, and don't bother to investigate and punish them, then the moral equivalence of both sides is established, and NATO forces lose all legitimacy.

John, Halifax, NS: I guess you really don't care what happens to the poor people of Afghanistan when Canada and then NATO pulls out, correct? Never that women and girls have no hope under the Taliban and that Afghanistan will basically revert back to the 11th century in which the uneducated Taliban, who mostly come from Pakistan, keep the people living in. Those in favor of pullout simply don't care what happens to the innocent people of Afghanistan under the Taliban. Teachers being hung by the Taliban means nothing, I guess.

Note:- They conveniently end the moment Obama's "new strategy" began, Dec 1, 2009.- The White House has neat PR statements ready to go, designed to draw maximum public curiosity.- Obama's best political supporter and pal John Kerry is making high-profile statements saying how these documents are important and may change things. Do you think he would make comments like that without Obama's okay or without coordination with the White House?- There are NO top-secret documents included, just conventional classified stuff that are mainly useless anecdotes.- The mainstream press are all writing reams about it, when any real whistleblower like Sibel Edmonds is treated like a radioactive leper.- Though Assange is hyped to be a hunted man he's giving presentations at TEDTalks and on Colbert? Sure! There has been a huge marketing campaign for this guy going on.

To Gregoryd - you are shining example of why I fear that ultimately the West is doomed. Soldiers fight battles, but it the people that must fight the wars, and you clearly haven't the stomach. The nature of war REQUIRES that you target the civilian population, just as both sides did in WWII - until one side or the other unconditionally surrenders. Our enemies know and understand this fundemental requirement, yet the weak-minded and weaker-willed in the West can't seem to grasp it. (Can you imagine fighting WWII if the Allies were constrained by modern "rules of engagement"? WE WOULD HAVE LOST!!!)

Just look at the video that was released of the apache helicopter attack that killed civilians in Iraq. This was sickening. They even killed a wounded man that was just trying to crawl to safety. Then when they found out there were kids injured their answer was they should not bring kids to a fight. Listen to video they were getting mad because they were taking too long to give them permision to fire. This says alot about the type of mentality in the US military. So maybe these leaked documents are far overdue. Everytime they kill some inocent human being they hide behind national security to cover it up. But my god if it happened to US citizens they would be screaming war crimes at the top of their lungs. The person who released these documents is not a traitor but a patriot who is sick of watching his government hide behind national security when commiting ware crimes.

He certainly isn't knowingly "allowing" such treasonous activity.I'm sure there would be some investigation of the Private's Chain of Command, but the Private and WikiLeaks are directly responsible and you all know it.

For anyone who cares,I read an article this morning that said the leak had been traced to a 22 year old, US,Pte 1st Class, who has been working as an intelligence analyst.I would not want to be in his shoes if this proves to be the truth. Can anyone spell "T-R-E-A-S-O-N" ?? I'm not sure it's fair to blame Obamas leadership,or lack of leadership for this fiasco.I do worry about his domestic politics. He has a lot of worries about elections this fall. And,like the Liberals in Canada,he needs all those pacifists and left wingers to get out and vote. And that makes it difficult for Obama to admit to them that this is a conflict that cannot be ignored.Much like our own Liberals,he made a lot of political hay by denouncing this war,in spite of the fact that they know that the UN and NATO had to take a stand when the people of Afghanistan asked for our help. We will never see western style democracy in Afghanistan. But if Afghanistan falls completely under the control of the Taliban, can Pakistan be far behind? The US military is going to wear this leak, and all of it's repercussions. But that alone cannot make all the women and children of Afghanistan dispensible or acceptable sacrifices. I am OK with people who have a rational reason for opposing this war.We all hate the loss of Canadian lives. But those lives were not lost in vain.Regardless of the outcome, our brave men and women have earned respect for their country. That respect has been missing for quite some time. Thanks to our military men and women,we are now seen as a valuable ally and a strong supporter of NATO.And you don't get that with cheap talk or political spin. You earn it.GOD BLESS OUR TROOPS.

In one easy to read line,"Nick" has said most of what needs to be said about the confict in Afghanistan. But "Earthwatcher" makes some salient points. While I disagree with some of the conclusions he/she comes to,the post is right in that armed conflicts are messy. It is blatantly insane for any nation to send it's troops out to do a job, insisting that they do battle with street fighters and terrorists, but use Marquess of Queensberry rules. The enemy has no such moral values. When "Earthwatcher" says "I am utterly against Canadian soldiers dying for a cause not our own",it rases a red flag. That suggests Canada can remain out of the fray in global events that are almost certain to have a major impact on Canada.Perhaps not today, but very soon.In fact, civilian Canadian Tamils have already confessed to buying,or attempting to buy heat seeking missiles.Canadian NGO's are in Afghanistan trying to build schools and prvide health care to children. Many left wing liberals are defending a young man held in Guantanamo for attacking and killing a US medic. Like it? None of us do.But this is a "cause of our own",in part, because many of the players are already operating in Canada. And I would suggest that Canada is being "truthful to it's agenda".Above all,we preach freedom and equality for all.We stand against tyranny and the torture and rape of innocent children. That may not be enough to convince people we should be at war.But it is not contrary to Canadian values. Besides. We are a part of NATO.We cannot abandon that team and expect them to stand with us when the time comes. At believe me,that time will come.If not in my time,in my childrens time. Thanks to "Intelligence Liberal" for my chuckle of the day.Your posts remind me of why I no longer vote Liberal. Hilarious!!!

None of these "new" allegations are new. Reports of Pakistan's intelligence agency supplying the Taliban training and information came out years ago. Unreported claims of civilain deaths due to coalition and Taliban operations is not earth shattering. The big thing is reports of surface to air missles. I don't care if the media didn't report this as long as the commanders in the field knew so they could plan accordingly. As for the person(s) who leaked this information it just goes to show that not everyone needs to have access to sensitive records. I hope they are found out, tried and executed for treason and endangering the lives of not just coalition troops, but tthe lives of those Afghans brave enough to stand up to the Taliban to bring peace to their own country

Would someone please define the term War Crime? There must be an official definition somewhere, yet the term is used indiscriminately by some as a label for any sort of action by troops of any nationality in a war zone. This "things mean what I want them to mean" attitude - particularly on the political left- does nothing to help the spread of truth (but what is truth???). While the leaked documents MAY indicate questionable actions by troops on the ground in Afghanistan, the average reader of Wikileaks does not have the knowledge or background to say "This is a war crime". Instead, someone misuses the term in a post, and by repetition it becomes "fact". Alas, the weakness of the 'net!

Stop whining and complaining and pointing your fingers at who's to blame. Support our Canadian men and women as they do the job that our government (which we elected) has asked them to do there.

"...WikiLeaks founder Julian Assange told reporters that the leaked documents show evidence of war crimes..."What a joke. Has Mr. Asssange considered that every suicide bombing or IED that injures or kills civilians is also a war crime. And that all combatants who attack and murder soldiers while disguised and hiding under civilian clothing is also a war crime. How come none of this is even mentioned or emphasized? Why is the public being brainwashed to criticize our governments? Why is "war crime" never mentioned in the media when suicide attacks and IED explosions take place?

Something doesn't feel right here. This seems like it may be a cleverly designed trap. Why would the US government make an announcement about leaked documents and direct people to exactly where they can be found?

Pakistani operatives have been facilitating the enemy? That's a shocking revelation...if you've been asleep for the last few years. These leaked documents likely won't live up to the hype, given the duration of the war in Afghanistan. How much really hasn't been reported, and what information actually escapes your imagination when it comes to the underbelly of war? Big deal.

What? You're surprised that the Americans (and other allies) are fighting a "dirty" war? Give your heads a shake folks. While I condemn the phony reasons for getting involved in Iraq and Afghanistan in the first place, I sadly also understand the how and why of how the US and other allied forces are conducting themselves.Do you honestly believe they could make any headway in their "war" by adhering to the Geneva Conventions? The Taliban certainly doesn't play by the rules, will use mosques and schools for human shields and launch attacks from there. They do not hesitate to murder police and other government officials. It does not surprise me there are "black squads" that carry out hit missions. It does not surprise me the Pakistanis security agency may be in bed with the Taliban. It does not surprise me that there may be needless civilian deaths in American operations. I don't like it, I don't support it or condone it but it doesn't surprise me.Since when is war pretty? or civilized? or conducted by any sort of rules? The only people that think that are the academics, politicians, newsies and other assorted civilians that are not and never will be the ones with their boots in the dirt and their fingers on the trigger.I am utterly against the war we, the West, have entered into in that region. I am utterly against Canadian soldiers dying for a cause not our own and not truthful in it's agenda. I utterly and completely support my Canadian troops but condemn the reason they are there. That is not their call, they are simply doing their job. The one they signed on the dotted line to do. I did it and walked away. Some of them do not.

People who leak such documents should be treated as traitors in wartime.People today have been lulled into thinking they can do anything with impunity in the name of public protest. But when you violate your country's trust, endanger your country and the lives others who serve your country in wartime you are the worst of traitors and should be treated as such.
