Experts worry as girls go gaga over 'circle lenses'

Lady Gaga is known for her outrageous styles, but her latest fashion trend is generating a lot of worry from optometrists.

The bug-eyed look that Gaga sports in her hugely popular "Bad Romance" video was most likely generated by a computer. But it has helped inspire a number of fans to seek out "circle lenses," coloured contact lenses designed to make the eyes seem larger by covering not just the iris, but also part of the whites of the eyes.

Lady Gaga may be bringing the trend to the mainstream, but many circle lens lovers say the singer didn't start the trend. The lenses actually became popular a few years ago, starting in Asia, where many were trying to replicate the wide-eyed child-like appearance of Japanese anime animation.

Now, Asia has become the biggest exporters of the lenses, which are widely available online. They typically sell for just $20 to $30 a pair, both in prescription strengths, and as accessories.

Dr. Desmond Fonn who established the Centre for Contact Lens Research at the School of Optometry at the University of Waterloo, says he finds it worrying that the lenses are so very cheap.

"We don't know what these lenses are made of. We assume they're regular soft contact lenses, but because of the way in which they're sold, they must be made less expensively to make them marketable," he told CTV's Canada AM Wednesday.

He notes that the size of the lenses themselves isn't a concern; in fact, the lenses aren't any bigger than regular contacts; only the coloured iris part is wider.

But he worries that young people -- women mostly -- are buying the lenses without being instructed on how to care for and clean them.

"The biggest concern is that the majority of the young kids who use these lenses buy them but have no education about them," he said.

Fonn and other optometrists say there are lots of dangers inherent to buying contact lenses from anyone other than an eye care professional. If they don't fit right, there is the possibility of corneal abrasion. If the lenses aren't properly disinfected, there is the risk of conjunctivitis, an infection of the membrane lining the eyelids. An allergic reaction is another possibility.

"The very worst thing that can occur is very serious corneal infection," says Fonn.

"And there's scientific evidence to suggest that if you buy lenses on the Internet, there's a two to three times increased risk of developing serious corneal infection – corneal infection that can't be mediated with therapeutic drugs. So it might eventually end up that patient having to have corneal transplant."

Fonn worries that patients can order prescription contacts over the Internet without actually having to present a prescription, so customers can choose the strength of their lenses as freely as they choose their colour.

But what angers Fonn most is that while prescription contact lenses are classified by Health Canada as medical devices, novelty lenses are not. So while corrective lenses must be licensed by Health Canada before they can be imported and sold in Canada, anyone can sell novelty lenses.

"Almost every other country in the world classifies contact lenses as a medical device," says Fonn. "For some reason, coloured contact lenses and fun lenses in Canada haven't been given that designation."

He says he doesn't understand why novelty lenses aren't licensed, since they are placed onto the eye and can be just as dangerous as improperly used corrective lenses.

Has anyone even read that the fad did not start with GaGa? There's a reason why these lenses come from Asia; people there are anime-crazy, trying to replicate the wide-eyed look. And to the guy who said kids should be introduced to Mozart and Beethoven, real 'classical' musicians - just because their music is old, it doesn't make them better than everything else. It's just because we are better connected now and can indulge in different tastes that there are so many people that provide these services, and why things now go out of style much quicker. Hey, if Beethoven had a team working for him like our stars do now, he'd be releasing singles every day too. Get with the times.

Here's the thing. The "wide eyed" look was not meant as a fashion statement. It was part of a video. It was supposed to look weird and crazy.

Let's put this into perspective, folks. Experts are warning that some of these "gaga" contacts may not be safe. Some, not all. They are also stressing that everyone who uses contacts should have proper instruction in their use and care. No one is saying that they should be banned, just that care should be taken. Parents -- make sure your kids are using approved contacts and caring for them properly. End of problem.

Wonderful! They can look like freaks and go blind and we'll have to support them with social assistance to be drawn from the dwindling tax base of the truly productive in society. No law against stupidity of course -- yet....

Wow big surprise, an Eye Doc who makes tons of money by selling contact lense complains that there is a cheaper product available. Sounds to me like scare tactics, sew fear, uncertainty, and doubt. While this may be a health issue, it doesn't sound like it. For example, where are the people whose eyes have already been damaged....no where??The Japanese have always made a quality product, in mass production, and their products have been typically superior.Maybe our Eye Docs should lower their prices, like by half.If there is a health issue, show us the patients.

This board seems to be full of people that have never seen anyone else wearing anything that they themselves would like to wear, or look how they would like to look. You are all either amazingly beautiful people, or the most boring. My money is on the latter. Yes, these girls need to be educated on how to use these lenses safely. I also think they should be encourage to express themselves in safe ways. And despite that those eyes creep me out, it would be a bland world if we all looked the same.

i think that she looks like a clown...and not a good looking clown at that! remember bjork? gag a gag will go the same way one day, it would be sooner if parents exposed their kids to the bad role model stuff that she does and let the kids make up their minds if they want to emulate someone who is so disrespectful (yankee stadium) and who acts so vapid all the time. parents should concern themselves with raising their children to be more interested in smarts instead of sex appeal and it is up to the parent to ensure their child's health, if you don't want your child to have these lenses, don't give them the money to buy the silly things! and garbage them when you find. simple, no government intervention needed!

If girls think that lady GAGA is the rage and they want to look like owls and fools, then let darwinism take its course as most teenage and young men would laugh so hard at them. Only the weird guys would find that attractive. And if your daughter wants the weird guys, perhaps we, as parents should do our job and say, NO.

Are we so devoid of role models that people want to emulate and look like Japanese cartoons and a celebrity with a name that sounds like someone vomiting?

Ok. She apears in 1 video, which was a very weird/stylish/cyberpunk combination of things, with this type of eye 'lense' and all of the sudden its her fault? Parents stop blaming everyone else if your kids are doing something you don't like.

Lady Gaga is to blame for some kids trying to put these lens in to make their eyes look different, really? Your going to blame a music video for that? Holy not my fault blame someone else mentality!!! Lady Gaga is an amazing artist, I assume those of you commenting on her referencing her name as being weird, or calling her a tartlet probably have never heard one of her songs, and wouldnt be her target audience anyway. The fact that her eyes look that in a video, which as the article says were probably digitally altered, doesnt mean that she is trying to get people to look like her, In fact she tries to get people to be independant, and free thinking, to be who they want to be, not to copy someone else. It is not different blaming her for something she would not have any idea would be a reaction to her video than it does to blame the Road Runner for a kid hitting another kid with an anvil, or to blame peole speeding on the highway with your kid driving too fast. If you havent taught your children better, or know what they are doing, than it is your fault if anyones for what they are doing. Also kids will be kids and do stupid things and there is no way around that unless you keep them locked up in your house. Hopefully no one gets hurt from using these lenses, but if they do there is no one to blame other than the people selling them and those using them.

Sure make them illegal & kids will spend twice as much to buy them on the black market. Like everything else we make illegal, it make s criminals wealthy.

When I was young many many decades ago, if I did something this stupid I would have got a shot to the head and told to buck up!Parents can't do that today with socialist governments in their faces, but, it is what is required!

What a bunch of uptight prudes. Get over yourselves. Like you didn't try to emulate whatever was popular back in the day? As for Anime being soft porn? Where do you get that? You were likely watching soft porn, not a kids show. Anime is just a cartooning style and is applied to many very different cartoons. It just makes the facial expressions clearer by exaggerating the facial features. You have also been able to get novelty contacts from multiple sources (including from optometrists) for over two decades.

Those things just creep me out. As an artistic person, I may see a creative reason for using such enhancements for a video (though I don't really watch those) but I would hope kids (and their parents) can exercise some good judgement about this. If a person with those on caught my eye, I'd seriously be wondering what was wrong with them.

Frankly, I don't quite understand the appeal of the Lady Gaga: she unoriginal, untalented, and unattractive. I think parents have a responsibility to introduce their children to the real classical musicians such as Mozart, Beethoven, and Brahms. As children learn to cultivate and appreciate real musical genious, they will have no time for the Lady Gaga's of the world or their antics.

If you read the article, it states that Lady Gaga's eyes were altered electronically (not physically, with lenses). People stick metal bars in their eyebrows, lips, tongues, belly-buttons; ink up their bodies with tattoos. What's the big hype about this "fad", which the entertainer herself is not even participating in?

Who is it that says that TV and movies don`t influence people? All that violence and bad behavior on the screen and there are many who say it has little effect. Give me a break. How about more shows that show people behaving nicely and helping each other out? No wonder there is so much bad behaviour and violence in our society.

If anyone has see Lady Gaga without any make up, hats or glasses, you'd quickly understand why she is concealing her true appearance. I was completely surprised to see her in her natural form and chocked on my breakfast. I think it's easy enough to explain to our daughters why some people go to such extremeses as heavy makeup, wigs, surgeries etc. It's okay. Being forthright and honest with our kids is the only way to fly. My 9 yr old niece at one time asked me why this 50ish looking woman had the facial appearance of a cat....i explained that is what every one who's had a face lift will look like once age hits them and all the scarring from the surgeries about the eye's and cheeks will become apparent.

I have to agree with everything the good doctor says with one exception. It is not surprising that these conatcts can retail for $20 to $30. We should all question why prescription contacts and lenses cost as much as they do. Quality contacts can be produced for pennies.

This is easily the most stupid thing I have ever seen. Well, that and 40DD implants on an 18 year old. Lady Gaga is not talented or attractive. She is a grotesque skank of the worst stripe. Worse even than Madonna. Why anyone would want to emulate her is a mystery. Ewwwww.

First off these so called fashion statements by misguided entertainers are at best "Ugly - Stupid - Repulsive and directed to minors. The major world nations have laws controlling such devices under their medical laws - BUT - NOT CANADA (would you expect anything different ?).If more parents took time and interest with their children, people like "lady gaga" wouldn't have anything other than an employment line to work in.

Once again we have young impressionable people following and emulating these dipstick tartlets. I am all for freedoms in our lives but when do these "stars" ever stop to think what effect they are having on our kids. Yes, as parents we should exercise our authority on them when these strange things come up but, really, I guess massive egos are at play here. What health issues can happen to the kids won't matter because they will want to be just like their "idol" How foolish.
