What are the benefits for holding G20 in downtown Toronto? Why not stay in Muskoka where G8 was or anywhere that's remote enough for the protesters to go?
This event costs downtown businesses too much. And the money "invested" on security by our dumb governments does not give us any returns. Remember, it's our money that they get to spend without having to asking for our consent.

Police arrest nearly 500 after violent G20 riots

Corralled for 4 hours, crowd dispersed by G20 police
CTV.ca News Staff
Date: Sun. Jun. 27 2010 11:18 PM ET
A tense and bizarre standoff between police and a crowd lingering in central Toronto following a weekend of G20 protests has ended after nearly four hours.
At a busy intersection in the city's core, a large contingent of police boxed in a group of about 200 people in heavy rain. They were not allowed to leave the area.
Dozens were arrested during the police action, which occurred only steps from where police cruisers were torched 24 hours earlier.
Just before 9:45 p.m. local time, police let the remaining crowd go free.
Talking to reporters late Sunday night, Toronto Police Staff Superintendent Jeff McGuire was pressed to explain why police had barricaded people for so long in the rain, before simply letting them go.
McGuire said, "We're not perfect in everything we do, but our interest was in the safety of the citizens of Toronto."
He added that police were trying to prevent the kind of violence caused by Black Bloc tactics the day before, and found weapons in the area.
"I don't know the specific weapons. I've been advised that some weapons were found along the route as the officers were forming around this group," he said.
Arrests linked to the G20 demonstrations have led to more than 600 arrests over the weekend.
CTV's Lisa LaFlamme said officers picked out some from the crowd and arrested them. A CTV News cameraman reporting from the scene was taken into police custody, but was released later.
Some who had been held inside the make-shift human corral, located at Queen Street and Spadina Avenue, said that they were simply in the wrong place at the wrong time. When rain began to pour down, many were unprepared.
Police have made at least 604 arrests this weekend, with about 253 taking place Sunday. Those numbers will likely rise.
Earlier, there was a tense standoff at a temporary detention centre where hundreds of people arrested during the protests are being held.
Outside the detention centre, which is about four kilometres east of the downtown core, police made a deal with the crowd, telling them they would release some of those arrested if the crowd moved off a busy street. The deal appeared to work and the crowd stepped back.
Initially, police had issued two five-minute warnings to the crowd to get out of the area, but the demonstrators didn't move.
Some people arrested in Saturday were eventually released from the detention centre with conditions to appear in court. Others had their charges dropped.
Earlier, a riot squad used rubber bullets and blank rifle shots to drive back about 100 demonstrators at a seemingly peaceful sit-in outside the detention centre. Police then apprehended an alleged member of an anarchist protest group.
Prime Minister Stephen Harper commented on the protests for the first time Sunday, saying the violence was unacceptable.
"We obviously deplore the actions of a few thugs but the reality is unfortunately that these summits attract this element and that has been a problem, as we know, around the world," he said.
"That said, this goes a long way to explaining why we have the kind of security costs around these summits that we do."
Security costs for the summit total nearly $1 billion.
During the early afternoon, sources told CTV's Ottawa Bureau Chief Robert Fife that police arrested three individuals for weapons offences after Molotov cocktails were found in their vehicle.
The incidents follow a number of arrests earlier Sunday. Police detained around 100 more people in connection with Saturday's violent protests against the G20 summit.
While the streets of Toronto were calm early Sunday morning, dozens of police officers headed out to their positions across the downtown core and raided a building on the University of Toronto campus.
A spokesperson for the Integrated Security Unit said officers found a cache of "street-type weaponry" such as bricks.
"Our officers are out pro-actively looking for anybody with criminal intent," said Const. Samantha Nulle. "Today they located a large number of people, they intercepted them and they did locate a number of street weapons on them."
Those arrested over the past 24 hours face a wide array of charges, from mischief and breach of the peace to assault, drug possession and dangerous weapons.
An Ontario court building in the northwest of Toronto saw the first wave of cases on Sunday.
One by one, the accused were led into one of the five designated courtrooms to have their cases heard.
Common charges included assaulting a police officer, mischief and participating in an unlawful assembly. The Canadian Press reports that many were released on the condition they stay out of Toronto's downtown core, keep the peace and not take part in any demonstrations until a court-appointed date.
Detention centre concerns
Nathalie Desrosiers of the Canadian Civil Liberties Association said monitors from her organization are among those being held at the detention centre, and she is concerned about the conditions under which they are being detained.
On Saturday, while thousands of marchers peacefully walked from the Ontario legislature along a pre-planned route, a group of self-described anarchists broke away to confront police and vandalize stores, banks and other buildings.
At least three police cars were also set fire. No serious injuries among protesters have been reported, although police did use tear gas and rubber bullets on some demonstrators.
OPP Commissioner Julian Fantino, whose officers are seconded to the Integrated Security Unit, said a number of officers were taken to hospital with injuries.
Fantino said officers had urine, paint and various objects thrown at them during the chaos, actions the commissioner called "disgraceful."
Saturday's protests cancelled a concert at the Air Canada Centre, put downtown hospitals into lockdown and closed the popular Eaton Centre shopping mall.

We are very proud of our police officers who carried out their duty so valiantly.
As far as the billion dollar expense for the security is concerned, this money was well spent locally and created so many jobs. Furthermore, does anyone think what an honour it was for Canada to bring all world leaders to our country? Isn't it time that we be part of the action in leadership instead of standing on the sidelines and be the spectators.
If these hooligans want to do something to make a difference in the world then they should go to the front line and fight along with our soldiers for the freedom and protection of those who are suppressed, have no right to go to school, have no right to move around freely in their own countries, have no right to vote.

For the person who used Wikipedia to prove that Anarchism is left wing abviously only skimmed. There are socialist Anarchists but there are also right wing ones and some right in the centre. If you are only going to cherry pick information you should not provide your sources.
I understand why the peaceniks turn a blind eye to the more reckless protesters. "The Enemy of my Enemy is my friend." As a peacenik I don't approve of violence. As a concerned and educated human, I am opposed to the culture of greed and indifference to the plight of our vulnerable humans and animals.
I believe that we should be dealing with the disasters in climate change that are already happening as well as things like the leak in the Gulf. I won't use violence and I won't protect a government and group of countries that are ignoring the real problems in the rush to get more money and more power.
FYI: The women's movement eventually had to turn to civil disobedience in the 1800's. Equal rights in the US came on the backs of many dead. France had legendary civil disobedience. Big change rarely comes quickly or without pain.

We should be happy to live in a world where world leaders are willing to sit in a room and try to make the world a better place.
Be reminded that there are thousands of issues in this world that we can work on and they can only be discussed one issue at a time, one day at a time. The G20 is meant to focus on more of the financial issues in the world. There are other forums to discuss world hunger, woman's rights, etc.
I support those that had something to say and did so peacefully, you have that right. To those of you that chose to break storefront windows, loot businesses, burn police cars, graffiti all in sight ~ &%!# you. That comes out of my tax dollars and because of your ingnorance many of us have to sit at home watching the news embarassed that we live in a world where people would act so distastefully but also would give no consideration to innocent peoples property and with no consideration for the people that would rather have their tax dollars spent on health care, education and not cleaning up your childish mess.
For those that suggest skype, video conferencing etc. I agree that this is a useful tool, however...when discussing serious issues with friends and family, do you prefer facebook? or do you prefer to sit in a room together to share your point of view.
To Mike ~ you knew where you were going, what you were doing and as my dad always said "guilty by association" ~ don't sound so surprised. The police waited a LONG time before laying down the law as they have been criticized in the past for their actions. They are damned if they do and damned if they don't. I think they did what they could do give those that felt they needed to say something some space and look what good that did. As far as I am concerned...peaceful protest means peaceful, not lighting cars on fire. If you are in that area, don't act so surprised.
And to that pathetic girl that was the first face I saw on the news when I woke up this morning whining that she only got 2 cheese sandwiches while being held for her disgusting involvement. Cry me a river...what about the people in the world that are probably on your protest list experiencing "world hunger" I am sure they are really sad to hear you only had 2 cheese sandwiches in 19 hours ~ maybe they will protest for you.
Come on Canada...we are better at communicating than this.

Taunting police or throwing bricks at them or otherwise disobeying them during a time of crisis is not exercising ones right to free speech.
Once the riots began, "peaceful" protesters should have gone home and got out of they way.Instead they create more mayhem and so the so-called peaceful protesters get what they deserve. Perhaps these "protesters" should also be held responsible for the damage caused by the more overt criminals. You contribute to the mess... you pay for it. !

As for the police, as we all know, in these situations, the terrorists HIDE behind the people, mix right in the MIDDLE of a group then hide... just like the Palestine's terrorists, Al-Quaëda, the Talibans etc.

I tottaly agree with "ashamed" about the stupidity of people in mobs. This is exactly what the Black Bloc counts on,and uses to their advantage. They are the cowards with the masks that hide behind peaceful protestors, women, and children. Then they incite violence, taunt the police, and hope people who went to protest peacefully will eithr join in the destruction,or give Black Bloc members the civer they need. And the weak members of the formerly peaceful crowd just follow the mob.
It did not work at the Olympics, enen though they also sucked in the BC Civil Liberties Ass. I think it was because of the crowd. Here, we had crowds of people out looking to enjoy the games. Their revulsion with the violence, and the contempt showed the rioters by the genreal public, left the rioters with no one to hide behind, and their efforts lost momentum. In Toronto, although probably unwittingly, those who went to protest peacfully, actually fueled the fire. By not backing off and saying "we protest this G20,but violence is not our way", they gave aid and support to the Black Block. Canadians should demand a list of all organizations who were involved in any way,and simply MAKE THEM PAY, by not giving them even an ounce of support until they renounce violence and terrorism as a valid protest tool.

A. A good number of people are not protesters they are thugs spoiling for a fight
B. Police did not initiate the breaking of windows, they were not even around when the hooliganism started.
C. These thugs spoil for a fight anywhere, yes a downtown setting is not the wisest thing but that does not give these criminals the right to damage property. SOMEONE is paying for this and it will be every Canadian.
D. To the bystanders and gawkers go watch on TV what is happening if you go there and mix in with the crowd and get caught up with the police doing their duty that is your own fault.
Bottom line is that the police are that thin blue line between peace and chaos, bravo to them for being there and for the amazing restraint they have shown. Peaceful protest is one thing, vandalism and assaults are not peaceful protest.

I applaud the police and I am behind their tactics 100%.I say round them all up, every one of them no matter what their reason for being there, give them some jail time. The city should sue them for all of the damage they've caused instead of trying to figure out how to pay for it. Also, the store owners should sue them; all of their names should be made public.
As to whether the police arrested the right people - that's rich!!! If you're down there today after what happened yesterday, you need to be arrested!I was disgusted at the show of complete lack of respect for one of the most beautiful cities in the country. People all over the world were watching and what a wonderful impression they're given. I am ashamed of what I am seeing!

Blame the Security people if you want but keep in mind that the Black Bloc as they're called had only one object in mind, and that was to search and destroy. My only disappointment was that with the media coverage that showed video over and over of the same damaging actions by these hoods, we didn't see one of them getting their head busted. My hope is that some of them are still in jail when the next event where some want to protest is held.

In that situation, I absolutely agree police have the right to detain and question people. Detention and having an actual charge laid against you are two different things, so educate yourselves before you open your jaws again. Police are also quite often outnumbered by protesters, the average ratio of police to citizen is about 450 residents to 1 cop... Yeah, sure, let's be the hero and rush a crowd armed with molatov cocktails...
Also, to Wells H ... Police cruisers were abandoned because the individual offers in them would have been swarmed by hundreds of anarchists, and 2, they didn't use burning paper fool.

The cost of the damage is far less then creating a reputation of heavy handed police intervention. Holding the meeting in a city is much easier as the streets provide control areas much easier to secure than open areas. Nature has to provide obstacle and the secured facility must be small. The downside in cities is crowd control tend to be larger but normally manageable. Always evaluate the causes and effects before passing judgment.
