What are the benefits for holding G20 in downtown Toronto? Why not stay in Muskoka where G8 was or anywhere that's remote enough for the protesters to go?

This event costs downtown businesses too much. And the money "invested" on security by our dumb governments does not give us any returns. Remember, it's our money that they get to spend without having to asking for our consent.

Police arrest nearly 500 after violent G20 riots

Corralled for 4 hours, crowd dispersed by G20 police

Date: Sun. Jun. 27 2010 11:18 PM ET

A tense and bizarre standoff between police and a crowd lingering in central Toronto following a weekend of G20 protests has ended after nearly four hours.

At a busy intersection in the city's core, a large contingent of police boxed in a group of about 200 people in heavy rain. They were not allowed to leave the area.

Dozens were arrested during the police action, which occurred only steps from where police cruisers were torched 24 hours earlier.

Just before 9:45 p.m. local time, police let the remaining crowd go free.

Talking to reporters late Sunday night, Toronto Police Staff Superintendent Jeff McGuire was pressed to explain why police had barricaded people for so long in the rain, before simply letting them go.

McGuire said, "We're not perfect in everything we do, but our interest was in the safety of the citizens of Toronto."

He added that police were trying to prevent the kind of violence caused by Black Bloc tactics the day before, and found weapons in the area.

"I don't know the specific weapons. I've been advised that some weapons were found along the route as the officers were forming around this group," he said.

Arrests linked to the G20 demonstrations have led to more than 600 arrests over the weekend.

CTV's Lisa LaFlamme said officers picked out some from the crowd and arrested them. A CTV News cameraman reporting from the scene was taken into police custody, but was released later.

Some who had been held inside the make-shift human corral, located at Queen Street and Spadina Avenue, said that they were simply in the wrong place at the wrong time. When rain began to pour down, many were unprepared.

Police have made at least 604 arrests this weekend, with about 253 taking place Sunday. Those numbers will likely rise.

Earlier, there was a tense standoff at a temporary detention centre where hundreds of people arrested during the protests are being held.

Outside the detention centre, which is about four kilometres east of the downtown core, police made a deal with the crowd, telling them they would release some of those arrested if the crowd moved off a busy street. The deal appeared to work and the crowd stepped back.

Initially, police had issued two five-minute warnings to the crowd to get out of the area, but the demonstrators didn't move.

Some people arrested in Saturday were eventually released from the detention centre with conditions to appear in court. Others had their charges dropped.

Earlier, a riot squad used rubber bullets and blank rifle shots to drive back about 100 demonstrators at a seemingly peaceful sit-in outside the detention centre. Police then apprehended an alleged member of an anarchist protest group.

Prime Minister Stephen Harper commented on the protests for the first time Sunday, saying the violence was unacceptable.

"We obviously deplore the actions of a few thugs but the reality is unfortunately that these summits attract this element and that has been a problem, as we know, around the world," he said.

"That said, this goes a long way to explaining why we have the kind of security costs around these summits that we do."

Security costs for the summit total nearly $1 billion.

During the early afternoon, sources told CTV's Ottawa Bureau Chief Robert Fife that police arrested three individuals for weapons offences after Molotov cocktails were found in their vehicle.

The incidents follow a number of arrests earlier Sunday. Police detained around 100 more people in connection with Saturday's violent protests against the G20 summit.

While the streets of Toronto were calm early Sunday morning, dozens of police officers headed out to their positions across the downtown core and raided a building on the University of Toronto campus.

A spokesperson for the Integrated Security Unit said officers found a cache of "street-type weaponry" such as bricks.

"Our officers are out pro-actively looking for anybody with criminal intent," said Const. Samantha Nulle. "Today they located a large number of people, they intercepted them and they did locate a number of street weapons on them."

Those arrested over the past 24 hours face a wide array of charges, from mischief and breach of the peace to assault, drug possession and dangerous weapons.

An Ontario court building in the northwest of Toronto saw the first wave of cases on Sunday.

One by one, the accused were led into one of the five designated courtrooms to have their cases heard.

Common charges included assaulting a police officer, mischief and participating in an unlawful assembly. The Canadian Press reports that many were released on the condition they stay out of Toronto's downtown core, keep the peace and not take part in any demonstrations until a court-appointed date.

Detention centre concerns

Nathalie Desrosiers of the Canadian Civil Liberties Association said monitors from her organization are among those being held at the detention centre, and she is concerned about the conditions under which they are being detained.

On Saturday, while thousands of marchers peacefully walked from the Ontario legislature along a pre-planned route, a group of self-described anarchists broke away to confront police and vandalize stores, banks and other buildings.

At least three police cars were also set fire. No serious injuries among protesters have been reported, although police did use tear gas and rubber bullets on some demonstrators.

OPP Commissioner Julian Fantino, whose officers are seconded to the Integrated Security Unit, said a number of officers were taken to hospital with injuries.

Fantino said officers had urine, paint and various objects thrown at them during the chaos, actions the commissioner called "disgraceful."

Saturday's protests cancelled a concert at the Air Canada Centre, put downtown hospitals into lockdown and closed the popular Eaton Centre shopping mall.

Did it dawn on anyone, "peaceful protesters" or the rioting idiots that they've probably single handedly added another million dollars to the security budget for these summits. Who's going to pay for the thousands of added police presence in the city over night and on Sunday? How do you think they all got in to the city? Where did they all sleep? Who fed them? How many of them are being paid overtime? Who's going to pay for the clean up? I'm going to guess that the majority of those "protesters" don't hold a job so that leaves .... the taxpayers!...Wasn't the inflated security budget one of the reasons for the protest to begin with?...Great job protesters! ....Thanks for having your voices heard ...Thanks a $1,000,000!

The one thing that has been really bothering me about the G20 summit is that the officials in charge of the summit completely excluded and denied the Toronto community any opportunity of helping and getting involved in the G20 summit. Further more these officials also shut down the inner-core of Toronto. Toronto is a community that enjoys to get involved in the very events that it is hosting and they denied Toronto that. On a sign close to the Sunnyside beach, the words, "Toronto welcomes the G20 summit" could be seen, but Toronto has done no welcoming nor have they been involved in the actual summit. Militarism does not count, and it is no wonder that Toronto would act so harshly to this summit.

To those complaining that the G20 should not have been held in Toronto. Do we not live in Canada? The government should be free to hold events where they see fit without the threat of violence from a bunch of whining imbeciles with nothing better to do. And to those complaining about the peaceful protesters getting arrested, maybe if they'd protested in the designated areas instead of where they were told to stay away from they wouldn't have encountered those problems. Anyone that was out there knew what the potential was, and deserved whatever happened to them.

I feel sorry for the innocent people who have been held up. There better be a good reason that the police are doing this. I am amazed though by the amount of people who are saying they were just watching taking pictures etc and now they are being held up. This was not parade and the added crowds probably made it worse. My heart is with the innocent people who were out and about and got caught in this mess.

Such a stupid place to hold a summit. Did the organizers learn nothing from what happened in London, Philadelphia or Seattle? They gave the violent protesters a stage to commit their dastardly deeds, and then Miller, Harper, et al act surprised when that's what transpires. A billion taxpayer dollars and counting...Next time try an aircraft carrier or military base.

What a mess. I spoke with my daughter on the phone and she's one of the hundreds caught in that human corral. She lives in and attends school in the neighborhood and was returning home from a meal with friends. As the CTV reporter said there was no warning from police to disperse. They simply penned them in and have held them there in the rain for hours now. I can't reach her on the phone now so perhaps they have taken her into detention at this point. It's just mind boggling.

Constable Dave Woodford could not comment on why people are still being corralled on Queen St.I can tell you why.within this crowd of mostly curious (albeit unfortunate) onlookers were some of the more subversive elements from earlier in the summit. As such everybody around them is being detained and searched. In all probability aside from the inconvenience and sense of helplessness of having their rights summarily stripped, the vast majority will be released without charges. In short, 99% are victimized by the police to identify the 1% that victimized them prior.Ironically, it didn't take a 70 year old Act of law and $1 billion to create this effect...it happens daily here. We call it TAVIS.

Unfortunately the police are damned if they do and damned if they don't. In this case, in retrospect they probably showed too much restraint . Hopefully all those arrested will be prosecuted to the full extent of the law and maximum sentences applied to those who are guilty. Those who were peacefully demonstrating were unfairly impacted as their generally legitimate messages were totally drowned out in the media by the actions of a bunch of hoodlums. Society should not tolerate this behavior at a G20 Summit any more than they would in our everyday lifeIn Ottawa we had an anarchist firebombing of a neighborhood bank last week. Hopefully seeing what happened in Toronto this weekend will be a lesson to the court to impose the severest possible sentences on those proven guilty.

The people at Queen and Spadina have been boxed in. They are not being let out except under arrest. That's why they are not leaving the intersection, they have been blocked from all sides by riot police. How are they supposed to go home if their exits are being impeded by police lines? Isn't that considered unlawful confinement? A store owner was arrested and charged for such an offense when he caught and held a shoplifter. This is nothing more than police state tactics to harass civilians so they will be afraid to demonstrate in the future.

I have been watching the Toronto G20 riots the past couple of days. Seems like the police response must have been about right as we have extreme views on both sides, namely that the police response was too aggressive and not aggressive enough. (Define "aggressive" as you will.) It's the old "can't please everybody" scenario.Personally, I believe the police are doing a commendable job under very difficult circumstances. Sure, there were probably some instances of over-reaction but the police are human too and when you feel threatened and outnumbered, you tend to fight back.A number of the comments I've read are quite ludicrous. Several ask why the peaceful protesters didn't take on the vandals. Well, the peaceful protesters are probably not that organized, at least not to respond to the violence. The thugs were obviously spoiling for a fight and normal citizens who have an ounce of sanity are not going to try to intervene and get beaten. Some have even called them cowards. There was also a comment I read about the peaceful protesters cheering on the thugs which tends to lower their credibility in my books.A fair number of people complain that the police didn't abandon their primary task of protecting the G20 summit and run after the vandals. The logical response has been that would have left the G20 open to attack by the violent elements and that the vandalism was an attempt to draw them away. Make no mistake, the violent elements appear to have been relatively well organized so this level of planning is certainly plausible. Finally, we have Mike, the innocent bystander detained. As was pointed out, he glosses over what he did to attract the police.

I feel that our law-enforcers were too lenient yesterday, even after the "Black Bloc" tactic was used by several individuals. On that note, I truly believe that those who used the BB tactic displayed cowardly conduct. What's more is how these individuals displayed their cowardliness, wearing all black to conceal their appearances, then blending into the crowds of peaceful protestors after committing a crime or misdemeanour. It infuriates me how these imbeciles would dare enter our city, and wreak havoc on our infrastructure, create chaos to our door step. My advice to the police: "Throw the book at them, and do whatever means (legally) necessary to punish these 'animals'. Prosecute them to the fullest extent of the law."

I can’t believe the naivety of some of the CP24 and CTV reporters especially with what’s going on at Queen & Spadina now. Yesterday they were asking where were the police when the criminals were on the rampage and now they are shocked and questioning the police when they’ve blocked in the protesters? They are surprised by the number of police?Perhaps they’ve recognised some of the criminals from yesterday are in the crowd? Police should have blocked in the protesters at 2.30pm on Saturday to prevent them backtracking along Queen and probably would have prevented all the damage in our city. The Toronto police have been far too polite and naïve in dealing with these criminals. With all the complaints prior to the Summit and the naivety of the police and media unfortunately it proves Toronto is really not an international city.

What a colossal waste of money. These groups have been around since the early 90's. They show up at every summit mtg. I think the government should have scheduled the mtg's at an army base or up in the far north or some isolated place. That would solve the problem of protestors and save the taxpayers a whole lot of money. Its not that anything gets accomplished at these mtg's anyway. I think each country could negotiate individually with other countries and have a much favourable outcome.

I'm disappointed to see all the pro-police messages on here, but I guess that's to be expected given the idiot thugs who have been splashed all over the TV screens of the nation. The police have way too much power as it is, and, unfortunately, now the provincial politicians bowed to the demands of Chief Blair in giving them even more, when it's clear what they need is more accountability, and less, not more power. As Mike pointed out, the police are, as usual, going wild, arresting whomever they please, being as violent as they wish with people who did nothing wrong. Unfortunately, these insane anarchists smashing windows and destroying property for no reason make the public start believing the police when they say everything they do is for "public safety".

I'm outraged that members of the media, including some of your team, have been arrested at the current situation at Queen and Spadina. I am very concerned for those trapped by the police in this area and rely on media coverage to ensure that police actions are "measured and reasonable". I am not convinced, watching the Queen and Spadina coverage with multiple arrests in what appeared to be a peaceful protest, that the police are acting appropriately. The G20 has now reached its conclusion. Blair and his officers should now back away and allow those who wish to return to their homes to do so. People live and work in this city and should no longer be held hostage now this G20 circus is over.

It they come form other countries will they be deported and not allowed back into Canada. This is total madness!

I am sure there were a majority of well meaning protesters trying to draw attention to serious issues such as HIV, child labour, hunger and poverty. Did they make their points across? No. It's because the streets of downtown Toronto were filled with hooligans, common criminals, hard core criminals, and ignorant primitives who came only one purpose in mind - to cause chaos. Their objective was to take advantage of the situation so that they could loot and destroy, and unfortunately, they were successful. I bet none of those thugs live in Toronto - Toronto a city of Peace.
We are very proud of our police officers who carried out their duty so valiantly.
As far as the billion dollar expense for the security is concerned, this money was well spent locally and created so many jobs. Furthermore, does anyone think what an honour it was for Canada to bring all world leaders to our country? Isn't it time that we be part of the action in leadership instead of standing on the sidelines and be the spectators.
If these hooligans want to do something to make a difference in the world then they should go to the front line and fight along with our soldiers for the freedom and protection of those who are suppressed, have no right to go to school, have no right to move around freely in their own countries, have no right to vote.

1) So-called “protesters” who have covered up their faces: show your faces if you believe in your causes. Why are you hiding behind a black cloth? What have you got to hide from us? If we don't know your names, how can we give you credit for your bravery? 2) Legitimate peaceful protesters do not hide behind a black cloth. Legitimate protesters have real names and identities, which stand by their actions & they would not create mayhem, cause property damages, nor do they hurt people physically or financially. 3) People’s Livelihood: The hoodlums may want to raise their consciousness that not only have they damaged legitimate protests’ messages, their destructive actions have also caused workers loss of wages, all of whom depended on their part time jobs for their living. The affected businesses not only have incurred property damages, but they have also had to cancel their employees’ week end shifts. 4) Some critics are saying we have lost our civil rights this week end: What loss? I am quite fine, thank you. Hoodlums who have broken the Law, won’t know what they have missed out because do not recognize civil rights & that law & order do not apply to them. 5) Note to Legitimate Protesters – Groups: I heard your messages loud and clear.

It's funny how these 'peaceful demonstrators' who were arrested just happened to have black clothes, gas masks, and flammable liquids in their back packs. These vandals attacked Toronto to try and get police away from the wall, the police didn't breach and these punks were eventually caught. So while they may have won one battle; they lost their war. I'm proud of the work to Toronto police did, and police from other cities who came to aid them. It takes a lot of will power to not react when people are throwing rocks, glass, metal and even piss at you, as well as harassing you.

Seeing the destruction which achieved no positive gains angered me yesterday. I do not claim to be informed about what everyone who was going to peacefully protest wanted to say to get their point across. Maybe I would've found that out had the "Black Bloc" regects not turned the G20 story into a negative one while destroying public property.I'll retain the fact that, today, after all the happenings in the G20, I'm left with no idea of what the leaders of the world want to do to better everyones situation. The "Black Bloc" would seem to not want the world to become a better place or let the leaders identify the problems and make solutions to remedy them.I will not comment on my job other than the fact that I am here to defend Canada from all enemies. To me, people that destroy public property (which the public will have to pay for, not them) and conduct terrorist acts are my enemy. I feel as though the majority of hard working, loyal, respectful, sensible Canadians who are were angered like myself because of the destruction should attend the next protest. I say that for the following reason: we have the ability to make citizen arrests of people conducting vandalism. Just think...a couple hundred weak, cowardly bottom feeders conducted all this destruction. Now inject thousands of Canadians who are pissed off at them and willing to put a stop to these infections. I guess I'm saying that the public (I wish I was there and not out west) should do more to stop this from happening. I like the fact that people can protest to get points across, but when groups decide to destroy our cities, we as Canadians must assist the lawful authorities to stop them. Props to the police btw

@Wendy: Just yesterday you were predicting no violence because "this is Canada" (to paraphrase your comment) and now, almost on cue, you are trying to pin this on PM Harper, as if he was personally handing out Molotov Cocktails and burning police cars. Funny how all of these "free thinking, enlightened" professional protesters (aka hooligans) claim to be above the control of the world elite, but as soon as they show their true colours, they claim that their actions were beyond their control, caused by the decisions of others!!As for your asinine suggestion that we should have these conferences in the middle of the arctic on some military base, I'd bet my bottom dollar that if Harper HAD suggested having the G20 in Cold Lake, you still would be screaming bloody murder, claiming that it is an affront to democracy to hold meetings so far away from the public eye and the reach of protestors. Face it Wendy, your political opinions are a weathervane that swings with every decision that the Conservatives make, no matter what they do you are going to advocate for the opposite!!

Putting aside, for the moment, the unacceptable idiotic vandalism committed by a few, it is worth a serious look by our "leaders" at the other THOUSANDS who were protesting in a lawful, peaceful way. These citizens, WHO OWN THIS COUNTRY BY THE WAY, have a right to have their concerns not only heard, but HEEDED.If our "leaders" don't want them to JOIN with the hoodlums and thugs the next time then they'd better start LISTENING & ACTING on their concerns. The spending of OUR money... without our express permission... is THEFT. The BILLIONS to set up this ridiculous circus of fences and 20,000 officers just so a few... a VERY FEW... world "leaders" can have TWO DAYS (more like a few hours) of yakking about things that have already been decided is enough to bring out the rage in anyone. It is a horrendous waste of money. The contempt our "leaders" show for "us" by commandeering our cities and interrupting our lives so they can have their meeting is simply not acceptable. There is a UN building sitting in New York all set up for their meetings. Why the hell dont' they use it?Every single one of these "leaders" has been bought and paid for, in one way or another, by international banking and business concerns. Each and every one of them is a puppet. They know it... and so do we. I don't know what their collective agenda is but I suspect it doesn't bode well for us "little people."Be warned... "leaders." We "little people" have had just about all of this bullshit we can take. And there's a lot more of us that there is of you and your gestapo.

The "peaceful" people in these demonstraions need to work WITH the police to STOP the vandals/hooligans/anarchists who are instigating and performing acts of ciminality. Having said all of that, it was a HUGE mistake to have the G20 meeting in Toronto. Why not hold it in a very isolated area, where security is easier to erect/achieve/maintain? it is painfully obvious that the tactics utilized by the Left wing in this Country , not only exploit, but rely on us "average" Canadians being quiet observers with opinions, realizations, passions and beliefs.( but no desire to push our will on to others. )I recognize the Rights of all Canadians; inherent with these rights is the right to Peacefully protest. I also recognize that by quietly sitting by and keeping my ideals to myself (as most "average Canadians do) I am empowering: the media to paint their slanted picture, I am empowering various groups to maintain this facade that they will have us believe that they had no role in yesterday's violent activities, and I am empowering the Left Wing extremists who rely on our silence to enable their attempts to sway naive citizens. The organizers of yesterday's "peaceful" Protests would have us believe that Black Bloc tactics utilized by the "anarchists" caught them by surprise and subsequently they denounce these actions. Ironically, when did the Protest attain live coverage on all news stations? When did Canadians notice the Activists? The answers to both questions...when the Black Bloc tactics were employed. The "average" Canadian realizes that despite an overt, well written release in which Organizers of the "Peaceful Protest" intimte their disapproval of the Black Bloc tactics utilized by some, the obvious reality is that Protest organizers rely on these tactics to gain media exposure and ultimately turn focus to the only people who are actually ever held accountable, the Police.

Even before the day broke yesterday the media and the people who do not even bother to learn about the issues had made up their minds about the protestors.

For the person who used Wikipedia to prove that Anarchism is left wing abviously only skimmed. There are socialist Anarchists but there are also right wing ones and some right in the centre. If you are only going to cherry pick information you should not provide your sources.

I understand why the peaceniks turn a blind eye to the more reckless protesters. "The Enemy of my Enemy is my friend." As a peacenik I don't approve of violence. As a concerned and educated human, I am opposed to the culture of greed and indifference to the plight of our vulnerable humans and animals.
I believe that we should be dealing with the disasters in climate change that are already happening as well as things like the leak in the Gulf. I won't use violence and I won't protect a government and group of countries that are ignoring the real problems in the rush to get more money and more power.

FYI: The women's movement eventually had to turn to civil disobedience in the 1800's. Equal rights in the US came on the backs of many dead. France had legendary civil disobedience. Big change rarely comes quickly or without pain.

One example of misguided support by the media was for the "poor" woman who got arrested for doning a gas mask after she saw the police put them on. Black bloc was allowed to break through police lines, yet peaceful protesters were physically accosted if they even got near the lines. It makes you wonder what the real plan was of the police leadership. And you just have to see the footage of them attacking the police cars, you can see that police are in the area but let them carry on with their violence. But when it came to the peaceful protesters, they fired rubber bullets and smoke bombs. Are they really trying to catch the violent anarchists, or is allowing them to damage property part of the plan to crack down on democratic rights to protest?

Paul
said

I watched the whole 5 minutes of video and only one word can accurately describe what is in there: staged. There were more cameramen and reporters than protesters, and everyone was obviously waiting around for someone to do something so all those cameras can have something to record. It looks like everything is going as planned. The protesters are getting their faces on TV, and the "leaders", that is, of business, politics, and police are happy too because the wing nuts are exactly where they are supposed to be: protesting (a mile or two from where anyone of any importance can even hear them) and smiling for the cameras. All that was missing was a teleprompter off on the side telling those three dozen idiots what to chant. Oh, and someone on the police side telling them when to fire. I'm pretty sure I heard someone yell "Action!" at one point. They're all idiots, the protesters, those of us watching this choreagraphed play, and one more to blog about it!

I spent yesterday watching the protests on several channels. I not sure where the amazing restraint the police showed was. When the damage was being caused and police cars burned they were no where to be seen. That's not restraint in my opinion. There were thousands of police in the downtown and yet were mysteriously absent from every scene of damage being done. Even though there seemed to be news crews on these scenes that filmed almost every broken window and burned car. The other thing I wonder about is the story of police being pelted by bricks and bottles. By the looks of the coverage almost everyone down there was filming, and yet I have not seen one image of anyone throwing things at police. If the police enforcement strategy was to let the trouble makers run riot, so they would be able to suspend civil rights and make mass arrests later and not be questioned about it. Then by some of the comments on this post, I guess you could say, job well done.

DISGUSTING.
We should be happy to live in a world where world leaders are willing to sit in a room and try to make the world a better place.

Be reminded that there are thousands of issues in this world that we can work on and they can only be discussed one issue at a time, one day at a time. The G20 is meant to focus on more of the financial issues in the world. There are other forums to discuss world hunger, woman's rights, etc.

I support those that had something to say and did so peacefully, you have that right. To those of you that chose to break storefront windows, loot businesses, burn police cars, graffiti all in sight ~ &%!# you. That comes out of my tax dollars and because of your ingnorance many of us have to sit at home watching the news embarassed that we live in a world where people would act so distastefully but also would give no consideration to innocent peoples property and with no consideration for the people that would rather have their tax dollars spent on health care, education and not cleaning up your childish mess.

For those that suggest skype, video conferencing etc. I agree that this is a useful tool, however...when discussing serious issues with friends and family, do you prefer facebook? or do you prefer to sit in a room together to share your point of view.

To Mike ~ you knew where you were going, what you were doing and as my dad always said "guilty by association" ~ don't sound so surprised. The police waited a LONG time before laying down the law as they have been criticized in the past for their actions. They are damned if they do and damned if they don't. I think they did what they could do give those that felt they needed to say something some space and look what good that did. As far as I am concerned...peaceful protest means peaceful, not lighting cars on fire. If you are in that area, don't act so surprised.

And to that pathetic girl that was the first face I saw on the news when I woke up this morning whining that she only got 2 cheese sandwiches while being held for her disgusting involvement. Cry me a river...what about the people in the world that are probably on your protest list experiencing "world hunger" I am sure they are really sad to hear you only had 2 cheese sandwiches in 19 hours ~ maybe they will protest for you.

Come on Canada...we are better at communicating than this.

With today's technology, the summit could have been run via video conferencing. There is no excuse for this waste of taxpayers' dollars, loss of wages and revenue for those working downtown or trying to run a business, or for the costs associated with the criminal acts imposed on us by these degenerates. "Peace-loving protestors" could share their messages in so many better ways than ridiculous protesting. Protesting is useless.. It's really just show-boating and a grab for selfish attention. Instead , messages can be shared through letters to MPPs, online via any governement site and by sharing your story through your cause or charitable organization. Better yet, if you don't like what your government is doing, show them via your vote next election! Your messages are lost by allowing the dregs of society to ruin everything. Protestors should quit whining and turn their wrath on these anarchists who destroy their credibility. As for our police, we should be supporting every effort they are making. We should not be so bold as to judge their strategies. Their purpose is to keep the G20 contingent, the public and themselves safe, and avoid confrontation. Don't forget too that these brave men and women are people too! They have left their families for two weeks - missing games, recitals, children's graduation ceremonies, losing their free time, their family vacations. All to protect each of us, even the idiots who are destroying our city and Canadian reputation. To the police, THANK YOU! You and our Canadian military are true Canadian HEROES!!! Part of why innocent people are arrested is that the police are human, believe it or not. There were mobs. How do you tell who is destroying things and who isn't? How do you tell who has weapons and who doesn't? I doubt anyone posting here would have liked to be a police officer during all this. Sadly, these criminals who did all this dragged other people into their riot. We can all point fingers at the government, the police, the protesters, etc. etc. but the bottom line is, these people (kids) destroying things were committing criminal acts & had to be stopped and yeah, the wide net grabbed more than the bad element. That is how it ALWAYS is when criminals infiltrate and work their bad mojo. I hope Canada doesn't get all politically correct about this because I'd like to see the proven destroyers held responsible for their acts.

I think that they should have had the Summit in Unity, Saskatchewan. Name of the town is very suitable for the Summit. Nowhere to hide (very flat). Community Center is plenty large to hold such an event. If you are a stranger in town with the intent to cause trouble, the locals could identify these strangers immediately and have them removed from the area. My $0.02.

Questions for those who support this meeting should be held here for showing off our beatiful city: Do the high fences make the city prettier? Why the people who work in downtown feel they were caged in like zoo animals?

We would like to see a perminant summit venue built in Arctic and the costs be shared between those G20 coutries.

I read the comment from a university student named Mike and was annoyed at how things have gotten out of hand. To treat an innocent bystander with such indignity it outrageous. Why the need by police to call him queer with skinny legs? Mike, you should take action on these comments because no one, and I mean no one, can intimidate anyone. Secondly, every other comment is regarding anarchists but does anyone take a moment to think it could be the work of regular Torontonians who are fed up and angry with their government. Come on, why are we forgetting the 1 billion price tag of the summit and bringing on HST which I think is going to make all of us poor in the long run and then cutting back on so many services. Why do we forget these things? They are frustrating as at every turn, the govt increases taxes on and on. Come on, we need these protests, we need to show we are angry otherwise no one listens as we very well know. So, lets support the protesters, they are protesting to bring justice.

It's sad that a small minority of anarchists ruined the message of the legitimate protesters. Most of these "black block" anarchists are nothing more than narcissitic spoiled brats looking for excuses to vandalize in the guise of helping the oppressed. I hope they go through the full bureacracy of the law and pay for the damages they caused. They should count themselves lucky they are doing this in Canada and not a more hardlined country where they may just end up disappearing.

While I am totally up for peaceful protests, being a Torontonian, it hurts to see the damage that has been brought upon the city by some ignorantly retarded thugs. They will be gone in a day and we Torontonians will be left to pay for all the damage. The whole message of the protests from all the groups, whether peaceful or not, has been lost in the wake of all the destruction. I for one commend the police and would like to see all the so called violent protesters put behinds bars and not released till they pay up for the damage they have caused. They are nothing but criminals and deserve a good beating. Some people are complaining about how peaceful protesters have been arrested. Well, it's not too hard for some one for cover themselves head to toe, burn a cruiser, and merge back as a peaceful protester after getting a quick attire change. Shame on them all. BRAVO to the cops and hope they come down even harder on these idiots.

Once the riots began, "peaceful" protesters should have gone home and got out of they way.Instead they create more mayhem and so the so-called peaceful protesters get what they deserve. Perhaps these "protesters" should also be held responsible for the damage caused by the more overt criminals. You contribute to the mess... you pay for it. !

I attended a police station yesterday seeking assistance in an unrelated matter. I observed officers watching the news reports. After each police car was torched, the constables cited the vehicle call numbers and confirmed with each other that those particular call numbers were reported stolen earlier in the day, and that weapons from the trunks of the vehicles were also reported stolen.

The Police were aware of the vehicle call numbers. How do stolen Police cars that are clearly visible out on the street, in their presence, suddenly go up in flames?

I am not proud that Harper spent so much but when I see the distruction and harm that this group is doing it makes me wonder if they realise that they are the cause. We all have to pay for these criminals. The protesters are not helping their cause but they are helping criminals to do harm. Why don't they regroup and report the trouble makers and maybe their message will get through. Right now I don't know what they are protesting but I know who they are helping. Those people in the black bloc are well equipped and they communicate with each other by different modes and when one whistles the others run to assist and create more distruction. They supply bricks from landscaping to others so they can throw them at store windows and other things. We can see it why can you peaceful protesters let it happen and not report if you care so much.

The leaders of these groups should be charged criminally and sued for damages to repair the businesses that were affected by the actions of their group members.

I'm appauled at the ignorance of some of these comments. To think that protesters were the ones carrying out the violent destruction of property is just not the case. This was done by a group of anarchists who were able to take advantage of a global summit taking place in a major city. If this had been better planned, and not in downtown Toronto, a lot of destruction could have been avoided and much of the tax money would not have had to go to clean up this mess. You would think that our Prime Minister would have chosen security over photo op after we all witnessed what happened at the Seattle summit.
As for Mr. James Blackburn's comment about those who were arrested; I will have him know that the majority of arrests were made against innocent civilians who were exercising their right to free speech. Watch some of the videos that are not put out by the main stream media and you will see peacefull protesters being violently taken down by police using excessive force.

Of course, the "usual suspects" blaming PM Harper. Wendy, we know you would never vote Conservative under any circumstances. No need to tell us that. Also to those saying this shouldn't have been held in Toronto. Please tell me where, other than a big city, are you going to find hotel rooms, restaurants etc, for the thousands of people that have come for these summits. Even some have suggested an army base, since when are there thousands of hotel rooms and restaurants there. Those that mentioned places like Kananaskis, where a former G8 was held. Kanasaskis is a beautiful place, but with only 2 hotels, nowhere near equiped to hold a summit of this size. As to the expenditure in other jurisdictions, it has been said that those estimates are far below the actual costs, and the true costs were not reported. Too bad that our MSM won't report the truth about that. After seeing the vandalism on TV, we now know why the security cost so much.Unfortunatly, there are always a few that spoil it for those that are legimate. I hope that those responsible are dealt with to the full extent of the law, but I also know that due to our "loose Liberal laws" that is highly unlikely.Kudos to all the police officers from all forces that have done their best under such demanding circumstances.Unfortunatly, they are damned if they do and damned if they don't, as is the case with our Federal Government. Imagine the outrage by the opposition, and Wendy, if the security hadn't been so tight!!!! Well I guess Wendy would oppose either way.

In all the footage I saw of yesterdays events, I saw one lone man grab a kid, yes a kid probably no older than 15/16, who had just attempted to destroy a storefront window. This man looked around and seemed to call for help, all the while as media and onlookers took their pictures and watched. The only thing that happened was masked people converged on this man and forced him to let go of the boy. The man, thankfully, was left in one piece as the boy fled and disappeared into the crowd. ~ I want to thank that man for being brave enough to not only stand up to these criminals, but to try to apprehend them as well. I know people will say he was foolhardy to try, but I say that if more of the crowd had behaved as this man had there would have been less damage done. And to the boy he caught, whose face was brodcast on national tv, I hope your parents turn you in to police!

I don't know why legitimate protesters bother to show up at all. The anarchists and violent protesters are using exactly this opportunity where hundreds of people with legitimate concerns will be present so the anarchists can blend in and cause trouble. No one cares about any of the issues raised at these protests because every time, the violence gets center stage. The G20 leaders don't care about the protests and issues. It'll be better off for the demonstrators with real concerns to protest at a time other than G20 or G8 summits! Then they'll probably get more of the positive attention they need.

The protestors have shown to be a mix of violent and peaceful. To the violent I say; You are the scum that has been created by a society that does not believe in absolute morals. You do not even warrant any news coverage. Your purpose is not to build or solve, but to tear down and destroy. You deserve any rough treatment you have received. To the peaceful I say; You should not risk yourself or your mission on such activism. It has been known that this would become violent and ugly, yet you act surprised. Well, I feel sad that some nice and peaceful people got caught up in the net of the police, but what did you expect? To those who are providing security; I appreciate your service. Though I am sure some of you were over zealous in your duty, I trust that the majority went home at the end of the day hoping you do not have to do that too often. At the end of the day, I hope you all can see that it is just not a good idea to attend something like this unless you are willing to accept that there will most likely be consequences that you will regret. There are better ways to get involved and get your voice heard. You don't believe me? Great, go get shot up with rubber bullets and gassed and thrown in some detention centre and complain about being abused for no reason. See how many of us law abiding, loving and truly peaceful people come to your rescue.

MAKE THEM PAY!!! I totally agree with the post by "G20 Trash".There are others who also know, and pointed out exactly what the Black Block is. THese parasites should rot in jail for a while, and pay big fines if Ontario has courts and judges that actually believe in justice. Some of these Black Bloc morons came to Vancouver for the Olympics, from the USA. And some came armed.

I tottaly agree with "ashamed" about the stupidity of people in mobs. This is exactly what the Black Bloc counts on,and uses to their advantage. They are the cowards with the masks that hide behind peaceful protestors, women, and children. Then they incite violence, taunt the police, and hope people who went to protest peacefully will eithr join in the destruction,or give Black Bloc members the civer they need. And the weak members of the formerly peaceful crowd just follow the mob.

It did not work at the Olympics, enen though they also sucked in the BC Civil Liberties Ass. I think it was because of the crowd. Here, we had crowds of people out looking to enjoy the games. Their revulsion with the violence, and the contempt showed the rioters by the genreal public, left the rioters with no one to hide behind, and their efforts lost momentum. In Toronto, although probably unwittingly, those who went to protest peacfully, actually fueled the fire. By not backing off and saying "we protest this G20,but violence is not our way", they gave aid and support to the Black Block. Canadians should demand a list of all organizations who were involved in any way,and simply MAKE THEM PAY, by not giving them even an ounce of support until they renounce violence and terrorism as a valid protest tool.

Come on! These people are not anarchists, they're too weak for anarchy! An anarchist is someone who believes in no laws, no rules, no police, the fall of civilization, and is not afraid to show his face. Ironically, none of these so called anarchists would survive five minutes in such a world. Anarchy would return us back to a race of apes with guns, where you and your family would be subject to any other bigger ape who wants to take what's yours, rape your wife and hurt your kids. So, yeah, go ahead and call for anarchy! And when the laws of man fall away, who's gonna protect those so called anarchists? There's a difference between protesting and vandalism. If you really want anarchy, don't complain when you get gunned down in the street. That's what you wanted, right? Anarchy. They're just a bunch of common criminals, using this opportunity to destroy a city. Today, I'm ashamed to be Canadian.

Harper is the one who made the decision to have this in downtown Toronto, knowing full well that he was throwing a tiger and an elephant into the same cage. Toronto itself did not WANT it. Toronto did not ASK for it - (unless you call not voting CPC 'asking for it'.) Precedence CLEARLY suggests that a criminal - and often foreign - element inevitably infiltrates these mostly legitimate protests. Now, he'll try to use this deliberate oversight to justify further erosion of civil liberties. This is Harper's way of punishing Toronto, but he's cutting off his own nose to spite his face.

A handful of hooligans are being confused with and used as an excuse to intimidate the huge number of peaceful and articulate protesters whose messages we would do well to hear out before we are once again summoned to the polls. Please CTV: report on the many important issues that all Canadians, protesters included, need to address. Once the riots began yesterday afternoon any persons near the problem areas were just looking for trouble. So do not then try to justifyyour "tempting of fate" by suggesting you were there for peaceful purposes. Peaceful protesters do not taunt police officers, or worse.. throw things at them. Any disrespect for authority at such times deserves a much harsher response than that given by the police. Perhaps tear gas, pepper spray, batons and rubber bullets should have been used more readily. Since when does the right to express a warped perspective and to demonstrate hooliganism supercede the right of hard working taxpayers to have their property protected and to live securely ... and without the inconvenience caused by these leeches upon Canadian Society. And just look at the type of persons that are hauled away for failing to use better judgement by being elsewhere... these criminals are not exactly outstanding tax paying citizens... they tend to be mouthy losers... the dregs of our society.

I have been very impressed by the Toronto police. A lot of people have mentioned that they should have been able to break off immediately when things started to turn violent- the issue was a tactical one. One officer can not break out of line to chase after a pack, he/she would most likely have been attacked. The whole group can't break out of form to chase after them either; that would leave the very people/place they are protecting vulnerable. Obviously strategic decisions had to be made ensuring that there was still protection in the area, which is why the delay occurred. Also, it's really obvious from a lot of the footage that the police are constantly telling people to "get back". If you don't listen to them, that's your problem. These are people who have had to take insults, bricks, rocks, and signs hurled at them all day and night. There were officers in the cars that were attacked! It's unfortunate that those people who are violent have ruined it for the peaceful protesters, but the peaceful protesters should realize that that is the reason the police are tightening down on things and comply with them when they ask them to "get back". I also think it's really unfortunate that we should be told not to hold the summit in Toronto...that we "had this coming to us" for trying to host the summit in such a big city. I think there are many positive reasons for hosting it in Toronto, and I don't think it would be such an issue again if it wasn't for those violent groups that take advantage.Just my 2 cents!

The black bloc is working with the police. They were allowed to break police lines and walk down College unchallenged. There wasn't even a police presence to protect Police HQ, which is a little strange. Just look at the footage from the media. You'll only see the police arresting peaceful protesters, NOT dress in black. Yesterdays actions were designed to give the police more powers to intimidate and harass the peaceful protesters. And to think this all could have been avoided if the meetings were held outside of the Downtown Core.

What a waste of money. I have a very hard time believing all those arrested were involved in criminal activity. Considering at all of the pre-G8 meetings (which also included VIPs from around the world) held across Canada leading up to the main event were secured by HOTEL SECURITY GUARDS how can they possibly justify A BILLION DOLLARS in security??? All an excuse to give corrupt police more power. Why not put Toronto under Marshall Law and really screw up peoples lives...

@MARIO wanted to let us know how much he appreciated the work of police officers, sho came to Toronto from across Canada. He sympathized with them for leaving their families for 2 weeks. My heart stated to melt and my lips quivered. Then I remembered a constable makes $1500 per week. They get time and a half for overtime. They get travel bonuses for out of town service. They received payments for ccommodations and meals. My guess is most of them will go home with $10 000 in their pocket. Not bad for a couple of weeks work, that included two days of actual security duty. How many thousand officers were there?! Thank you Mr. Harper for spending our tax dollars so wisely.

Lets begin:
A. A good number of people are not protesters they are thugs spoiling for a fight
B. Police did not initiate the breaking of windows, they were not even around when the hooliganism started.
C. These thugs spoil for a fight anywhere, yes a downtown setting is not the wisest thing but that does not give these criminals the right to damage property. SOMEONE is paying for this and it will be every Canadian.
D. To the bystanders and gawkers go watch on TV what is happening if you go there and mix in with the crowd and get caught up with the police doing their duty that is your own fault.
Bottom line is that the police are that thin blue line between peace and chaos, bravo to them for being there and for the amazing restraint they have shown. Peaceful protest is one thing, vandalism and assaults are not peaceful protest.

Mobs, from those that gained momentum in the streets of 19th century England, or who lopped of heads with guillotines during the French Revolution, or those who more recently protested in Red and Black in the streets of Bangkok, or our own Canadian protesters, are collective expressions of frustration at injustice, at marginalization, at a nation's sense of diminished under a government that does not understand it. During the past few years many here in these forums cannot express with enough emphasis that the Harper Conservative is taking Canada down the wrong path - from its police-like mentality in dealing with people issues, to 'crime' bills that seem more to create criminals rather than dealing with reducing crime (crime that is clearly already in decline), to the failure of the government to listen to average Canadians on issues of minor and major importance - whether it be about openness in government, loss of teachers in our systems, loss of hospital beds, failure to act to regulate marijuana, our mistakes in a war in Afghanistan, making a new class of Canadian criminals out of those using music and movies, and the list goes on and on....A mob does not articulate its grievances well, and that is probably the most frustrating thing for pundits sitting at home in front of their TVs and reading newspapers from their armchairs. But, right or wrong, this mob is acting collectively, on behalf of many Canadians, to express frustration at a corrupt power in Canada which it perceives as evil.

You guys are all idiots. THEY'RE MAIN OBJECTIVE IS TO PROTECT THE G20 LEADERS. The officers will do as ordered, they're not going to do something, just because they feel it's right/wrong; They have to follow orders. And the reason why they couldn't respond faster to the situations, ex. car in flames is because they have a formation setup. They need to keep that formation, if they break it to attend to the situation, they break formation and leave open opportunities for perpetrators to go behind the lines!

There is no question that some of these so called protesters were just anarchists looking for trouble. They have been present at every G7, G8 or G20 meeting that has ever happened. This was nothing new. The trouble caused by those hooligans was the very situation that $1.2 billion of our taxes was supposed to solve. So far the security forces have been a weak failure. In fact, by leaving their cars unattended, the police must have been trying to incite trouble. They knew very well those cars would be torched, yet they did nothing to stop it from happening. It is one thing when some of you post idiotic comments about how these rioters should be treated, but OPP chief Fantino, who should know better, was on television this morning rewriting the laws on terrorism and organized crime. It sounded like one more attempt to incite trouble. I'm beginning to think, the prime aim of the police tactics is to justify the $1.2 billion in new equipment and wages.

This is all too reminiscent of Krystallnacht in Germany many years ago where thugs targeted and terrorized otherwise law abiding members of society and their businesses in order to further their "new world order" which of course ultimately lead to the more horrible conflagration in history. I don't care whether these criminals are Nazis, communists or anarchist as the press suggests, they are in fact criminals bent on terrorizing society through destruction, bodily harm and likely murder if given the opportunity. When free people can not assemble anywhere of their choosing without the threat of intimidation, bodily harm and loss of livelihood, society must restore social order and deal with it or otherwise we will eventually lose all freedom. I would love to see the next G-20 held in The people's Republic of China and I would personally pay for one of these "anarchists" or Nazis or communists or what ever they are to attend and carry on there as they have done with impunity on the streets of Toronto..

These protesters, no matter what clothing they hide behind, have declared war on Toronto. They've vandalized and destroyed and disrupted the lives of the citizens of the city. A ripple effect was felt as transit services were interrupted; hospitals were on lock down. There are those who say the G20 should not have been held in Toronto. Why not? Our convention center is the perfect venue. That's one of the reasons it was built. Why should a bunch of ignorant losers decide where we should hold major events? The animals who took part in these protests thought they could come in, do what they did and not have to pay for it? Wrong!

I applaud the police and I am behind their tactics 100%.I say round them all up, every one of them no matter what their reason for being there, give them some jail time. The city should sue them for all of the damage they've caused instead of trying to figure out how to pay for it. Also, the store owners should sue them; all of their names should be made public.

As to whether the police arrested the right people - that's rich!!! If you're down there today after what happened yesterday, you need to be arrested!I was disgusted at the show of complete lack of respect for one of the most beautiful cities in the country. All the training in the world will not prepare anyone for the kinds of disregard and disrespect SOME will display, towards any form of authority, property of others and the safety of others. We will, unfortunately, always have a certain element within our society who feel they are above the laws which were put in place, not only to protect us, but to also give us the freedom of speech. Those who take it upon themselves to defy the laws of the land, should be punished accordingly. As a tax payer and law abidding citizen, it angers me deeply to watch a group of thugs destroy what so many have worked long and hard to build and maintain. Peaceful protests don't change anything I think the sixties showed us that. Stop taxing people to death and bailing out big business. Feed the hungry and shelter the poor. Don't you thing our government is somewhat responsible for this. I for one am glad to see some canadians are willing to take a chance and protest for their rigt to walk anywhere they want in our "free Country". We can spend Billions on a weekend event that dosen't really acomplish anything yet we will give people 500.00 a month to feed shelter and take care of ourselves. Maybe we should close our borders to immigrants until our country has enough jobs for the people who already live here. Maybe raise the minimum wage 20% like our govt officials. It is sad to listen to some of the people criticizing the actions of the police. It is easy to watch the television and say 'Why don't they do this", "Why are they not doing that"... Downtown Toronto is a big area.. they were trying to let the peaceful protests continue.. I can tell you that the police had all of their time off cancelled, they are human being being put in a horrible situation where there is really no winner. No police officer enjoys this, they would all rather be at home enjoying the summer with their families. They put themselves in harms way as part of their duty, but the goal at the end of the day it to 'go home safely'. They do not have eyes in the back of their heads. The situation is hostile and violent. The police did not want that. The horrific actions of the few anarchists yesterday should tell us all where the fault lies... on them alone. Why do people stay and watch? That also restricts the police from reacting as they should.

I believe in free speech. I believe in human rights, and I believe in peaceful assembly. In fact, I believe in those rights so passionately that I have chosen to defend them. I've done so for the last 25 years and in the process, I've seen friends and colleagues killed and injured. I have at times put myself in peril, and both my family and I have made countless sacrifices. I am therefore extremely disappointed to see and hear the news reports of violence, and worst of all, people watching passively as common hooligans rioted in the streets. The threat to democracy does not come from police. It doesn't come from the state. It comes from people who are not willing to take a stand against violence; who are willing to tolerate vandalism, destruction, arson, looting, and assault in their midst.

If I belonged to the Canadian Labour Congress, or the Council of Canadians, I'd be furious with the anarchists, not the police. It was the anarchists, not the police who initiated the violence. It was the anarchists not the police who disrupted your right to peaceful protest. It was the anarchists who put you, and your families at risk. You should be mad as hell not standing around cheering them on. Shame on you!

I saw pictures of protestors just standing idle as storefronts were destroyed and cars set on fire. Where were the protestors? Why didn't they stop these people? If you are a peaceful protester, and you try to stop the anarchists, the police will in all likelihood charge you with assault. They are there to protect the anarchists because their job is to discredit the peaceful protest movement. Plus, it's great revenue for the media.

It was held in Toronto because it's an amazing spotlight on our strong banking centre. As much as this is a G20 meeting, it's also a great way for Toronto to remind people that we are an invest-worthy market. "Toronto" has been on the front cover of most world newspapers. And regarding the suggestion that the Police intentionally left their police car unattended and that they purposely let the cars burn; don't be silly. That's an absurd statement.

I don't in any way condone violence but I am not in the least surprised. We have a dictatorial government that continues to ignore the wishes of working people while supporting big business. To the close minded who don't believe that police or people working on behalf of the police aren't mingling among protesters and causing the damage, just browse videos online. The videos speak for themselves. To those who say protesters should be treated like terrorists, you will feel very much at home in places like North Korea and Iran. Places that you probably wish we'd bomb because they mistreat their people, and yet you have no problem with our governments and police mistreating our people. If you want to get angry at someone for how this went down, be angry at the government who placed the conference in downtown Toronto, and be angry at the officers who stood back and allowed the burning of the cars and the breaking of the windows, while at the same time attacking and arresting peaceful marchers. The burning cars and broken windows were part of a plan to distract the media from the real violence, which is the abuse of peaceful protesters at the hands of police.

My comment is to all that say that the Police should have stopped the rioters before they started. Well my comment is that if this would have been the case, we would have had a multitude of "Police Bruatilty" or "Invasion of Rights" issues. The Police needed to wait otherwise all the other rioter would have went home to mama (lawyer) and cried how the cops abused them and they didn't do anything wrong. Unfortunately that is the way people have been morphing our society. Cause & Reaction. In good policing, Reaction should come before the Cause, however, due to these little babies crying out wolf there needs to be a Cause before a Reaction.Just my point of view.AlBob

This is without doubt another example of Harper's contempt for Toronto & Ontario. His right wing, semi christian fundamentalism values and power base are wrong for the majority of this country. He will be remembered as a self centered , cunning, power hungry leader who did not have guts to do the right things as his main objective is staying in office at all costs through political stick handling. Oh for a leader in any party with vision & truthfulness. That's who would deserve our votes.

This is for Toby; you had some really idiotic statements about the G20 and the federal government. We cannot let thugs and criminals dictate to us as a free society. While I do not approve of the vandalism by the anarchists, I think it is wrong to say that they are criminals without a cause. The anarchists here have the clearest message. They don't want the G20 in their city, and they don't approve of this massive group of authority figures-its the basic definition of anarchism.

People saying the police just watched all this partake... have you ever fought a fire larger than you??? The easiest way to keep a forest fire under control is to cut it off at points and let it burn!!! It's safe for the firefighters and it downsized the amount of damage done. Same in the case of a riot. You cut off all avenues of escape and spreads, you let the crowd attempt to calm themselves down... then you move in and put out the fire... it's safe for the police and eases harm to civilians. So quit badmouthing the police as they did their jobs RIGHT!!!

Why not have this meeting in a military base where it is safe and does not bother with the everyday life of the citizens of Toronto? And why were masked men allowed to parade around without getting arrested, before they set fires, and broke windows, yet if you did not give your name you would be arrested, it doesn't make any sense, looks like it was staged, by provocateurs, so the protest ends, cause that s the way they ,the global bankers want it,

Blame the Security people if you want but keep in mind that the Black Bloc as they're called had only one object in mind, and that was to search and destroy. My only disappointment was that with the media coverage that showed video over and over of the same damaging actions by these hoods, we didn't see one of them getting their head busted. Canadian Police arrest some protesters without injury then release them later that night, in my old country you would be severely beaten up and released a couple of years later!!

Lets stop these fraction groups like the "black bloc" from joining our protests!!!These are not real Canadians but hoodlums living off our taxes, most of them don't even work..If we don't say anything and let them join our protests then we are like then not any better.

I was in downtown Toronto yesterday and met police officers from all over our great country, coming here to protect us, do you realize many of them have left their famlies for 2 weeks..

The rest of you, arm chair generals, need to learn where to keep your idiotic comments down. Have you ever been in the Police position in the middle of a riot? Their job is to avoid confrontation and from the home videos I've seen they did a wonderful job.

In that situation, I absolutely agree police have the right to detain and question people. Detention and having an actual charge laid against you are two different things, so educate yourselves before you open your jaws again. Police are also quite often outnumbered by protesters, the average ratio of police to citizen is about 450 residents to 1 cop... Yeah, sure, let's be the hero and rush a crowd armed with molatov cocktails...

First the 1.1 billion is not wasted. Money does not disappear but is in fact recycled. Wages paid will generate income tax, be spend in stores which will also pay their employees who will pay taxes, GST/HST and so on. The government will see all this money returned within 3 years with benefits. In reality it will serve to stimulate the economy and help someone keep his/her job along the way.I admire the restrain the police has shown. They had a plan and execute accordingly.

The cost of the damage is far less then creating a reputation of heavy handed police intervention. Holding the meeting in a city is much easier as the streets provide control areas much easier to secure than open areas. Nature has to provide obstacle and the secured facility must be small. The downside in cities is crowd control tend to be larger but normally manageable. Always evaluate the causes and effects before passing judgment.

This Summit should never have been planned for downtown. It should have been planned somewhere more remote, somewhere more secure, somewhere ohter than in the middle of over 5 million people. Had they planned this properly, had they picked a better location, they could have saved taxpayers a billion dollars and local businesses too. Against the advisement of a relative in Toronto law enforcement who has a supervisory role in summit policing and security (and my wife), I ventured downtown late yesterday afternoon to visit a good friend in hospital (thankfully, not one that was on lock-down). Driving into the city was a strange piece of cake, although radio coverage of the violence breaking out made me seriously wonder whether I was making a stupid mistake. Very little traffic east of Yonge Street, and sparse pedestrian flow. Looking west along Queen Street, I could easily see something big and crazy happening. Eventually it got rather eerie, as the only traffic became the odd police cruiser. Upon leaving the hospital's parking garage, 3 unmarked vans abruptly pulled up, and officers in full riot gear began spilling out. It was clear that I needed to get going. After a troubling 15-minute delay by the Air Canada Centre, following witnessing hordes of police and bands of roamers west along Wellington, I made it onto the Gardiner Expressway (which seemed to have only 10 cars on it), and buzzed towards my suburban sanctuary, talking to my wife in the car, and getting heck for being a foolish father. Watching CP 24 when I arrived home was a disturbing eye-opener. It's hard to believe that the mindless thugs managed to create so much destruction and wreak so much havoc with such a police presence in the area. (Undoubtedly, my relative in law enforcement will give me some insight today.) The greatest head-shaker, for me, was the vast number of mental midgets who poured into the downtown core to amuse themselves with the "action," getting in the serious way of hard-working police everywhere. What jackasses.

The Harper government will use this to justify the billion dollars spent on security. The fact is that this event should never have occurred in downtown Toronto, and should have been in a location where control could have been more easily maintained. Had this been done the costs would likely have been more in line with the approximately $20 million spent in Pittsburg. And the other $980,000,000.00 dollars maybe could have been used for some of the projects that these protester were looking to protect. All we have now is a photo-op for Harper, a demolished downtown in one of the most beautiful cities in the world and an image that has been brought in line with every other country that has held this event.

My point of view is unique as far as I can see on the news, I was arrested at 8pm last night. I am a university student that wanted to go down to visit his girlfriend at bay and front. I got to bay and king at around 7, ( I had stayed in my apartment all day during the violence) and then I took a few pictures, voiced my opinion in a peaceful manner, over 500 meters from the line of riot police. I turned around to leave and 10 seconds later I was jumped and tackled by three undercover police. They bound my wrists with ties and then intimidated me with threats and heckles. "wait until we get you behind closed doors" "nice hat you queer"( i had a straw hat on)" "look at your little chicken legs" I was put in a paddy wagon for 50min in 100 degree heat with my hands tied so tight I lost feeling in my right hand. I was then taken to the detention centre where they had to use special cutters to cut the ties because they were so tight. I have deep marks on my wrists. I was held in a cell alone until 4am and released without charges, there was no water provided, no food. just a cold concrete floor and people begging for water beside me.I have never been arrested prior, was not part of any protest, no weapons, no mask, no black clothing, nothing. I agree that the black mob is not justified in their actions, but having said that the police are also not justified in their intimidation and threats. Snatching bystanders that may look at them the wrong way. Toronto will never be the same, Canada has lost its way. Not because of the political leaders but the out of control police who are accountable to no one! After I got out I went to the hospital because my right hand was still numb, having pins and needles when touched, the doc said I had nerve damage, that may or may not repair itself. It upsets me to hear chief Blair say that his police have done a tremendous job, "that those who committed violence will be held accountable", my questions then who is, if chief Blair is so naive about his own police's tactics going to hold the rouge police to account? For over 8hrs I was denied my right of free speech, a phone call, and common dignity. Please share my point of view.

The agitators should be considered terrorists and treated as such.

Never underestimate stupid people in a big crowd. These LOSERS ruin the protests for everyone, they distract from the message that others were trying to get across and render the protests useless. The government is now going to use this as justification for their outrageous billion dollar bill for this summit. Congratulations idiots.

It's really a bloody shame that these rioters are distracting us from the message of the true, *peaceful* protesters. I do hope, as much for the sake of the public as for the protesters, that the protests can be more peaceful today.

If only the police would arrest the tyrants. They're the real criminals. They're systematically destroying the planet, and a lot of them are in Canada just now.

For all the people who questioned why security costs were higher for this summit than for the Olympics, I hope they can see why now. These hooligans in Toronto are a disgrace to our country and I hope the world leaders, and people around the world do not think that this is a true sampling of Canadians and our values.

I hope, really hope, that they leave all of those people in jail for the next few weeks. Tell them they can all wait for a hearing with a judge before they get out. I hope at least half of those bumms have a job and get fired for not showing up, try explaining that to the boss, what a bunch of morons. I say pull out the sound cannon, the rubber bullets and get that crap off of the street. what a bunch of losers, my god, our society puts up with a lot of garbage like this. WHY?

I also hope they use all of the footage and charge others that were there, make these people pay for all of the damage, attach all damages to the social insurance number and take it from them until its all paid back, Interest and all.

They are all useless people for our society, I hope they all rot in a cage.

These "anachists" are not protesters - they are common criminals who must be now held accountable for the damage and destructions they caused. Heavy fines (maybe mommy and daddy can pay) and jail time. Legitimate protest is fine but these thugs are cowards who don't dare to even show their faces - cowards who just want to smash things and put the general populating in fear - perhaps more serious charges, especially against the ringleaders, are cin order. Sounds like domestic terrorism. Maybe we can smash and burn some of their things as part of the sentencing.

We have all levels of government to thank for putting this conference downtown. They knew this type of thing would happen, and yet they insist on having these meetings in the middles of cities. The anarchist black bloc have no agenda except to create havoc and take away attention from legitimate protesters. For all we know, they're agenda is the same as those who want to stop the freedom to protest.

From what I've heard, this group of people who caused the damage splintered off the main group. So they were easily tracked. They didn't shed their clothing until they went from Yonge to University along College. Why didn't the police act during that whole time? Wasn't it in their best interest to go after the VIOLENT people? Instead, I heard the police spent their time beating on the peaceful demonstrators. Also people should wonder why police cars were left unattended in the middle of roads only to be torched. And how did they burn so fast when all the people used was a piece of burning paper. Aren't they relatively fireproof inside? Again police were around and stood back and let it happen.
