Well, I live in Leamington Ontario and I can tell you that at approximately 2:30pm I felt the whole floor moving underneath me. I didn't know what it was and passed it off as being over tired, but then I felt it a second time within seconds of the first one. I still felt that maybe it was me not feeling well and then heard the news! We just had a devastating tornado here on June 6th and now feel this earthquake, certainly makes you wonder what is happening to our world!!

Earthquake of 5.0 magnitude hits Ontario, Quebec

Date: Wed. Jun. 23 2010 8:51 PM ET

A 5.0-magnitude earthquake rocked Ontario, Quebec, and parts of the northeastern United States Wednesday afternoon, sending residents running into the streets.

While there were no immediate reports of damage or injuries in major city centres, the town of Gracefield, Que., which is very close to the quake's epicenter, declared a state of emergency after the quake damaged several buildings, including civic administration offices, a church and a grocery store.

"We declared a state of emergency because we don't know if our buildings are secure," Gracefield city councillor Michael Gainsford told CTV News Channel in telephone interview early Wednesday evening. "We closed down all public buildings because there's lots of damage to structures, there's cement cracks, there's pieces of chimney fallen down… ."

Gainsford said the building that sustained the most damage was the local church, where the chimney fell through the roof and many of the windows were cracked. Local residents reported seeing the steeple move as much as two inches, Gainsford said. Inspectors were up on aerial ladders surveying the damage.

None of the town's residents was injured, Gainsford said.

The quake hit shortly before 1:45 p.m. ET, and was felt in Montreal, Windsor, Ottawa and Toronto. The U.S. Geological Survey's National Earthquake Information Center received reports the quake was felt throughout New York State, Vermont, Massachusetts and Ohio.

The quake occurred at a depth of 16.4 kilometres, and its epicenter was about 56 kilometres north-northeast of Ottawa.

Earthquakes Canada spokesperson Janet Drysdale confirmed Wednesday evening the quake triggered a handful of aftershocks.

"There have been some aftershocks following this event; in the hour or two following it, there were approximately four or five" aftershocks of a magnitude greater than 2.5, Drysdale told the Canadian Press.

"We would expect some aftershocks, but they would diminish as time goes on."

Bruce Presgrave, a spokesperson with the Earthquake Information Center, said though quakes in the area are rare, the region is an active seismic zone.

"With typical building construction in North America, magnitude fives do not usually cause major damage," Presgrave told CTV.ca in a telephone interview from Colorado. "But if they are close to a city they can cause things like broken windows and things being knocked off shelves."

Earlier Tuesday, word broke that a bridge collapsed into a river north of Buckingham, Que., northeast of Ottawa. No one was injured. Other reports of damage included a gas main break on Parliament Hill, and sewer and water main breaks in North Bay, Ont.

Via Rail is also warning passengers travelling east of Kingston that they will experience delays due to the quake.

"Trains travelling east of Kingston will experience (a) 2.5 hour delay for infrastructure inspection due to (the) Quebec-Ontario earthquake," says a travel advisory on the company's website.

Tremor disrupts government work

In Ottawa, a live news conference on Parliament Hill was interrupted as reporters fled the room, which was clearly seen shaking on camera.

Environment Minister Jim Prentice was in the middle of an interview with BNN when "suddenly my chair was moving."

"So it was pretty significant, it was quite a shake. Fortunately I was at the end of the interview and we all vacated the building," Prentice said.

The quake disrupted a Senate session. Conservative Senator Lowell Murray said he and his colleagues were debating energy issues when chandeliers in the upper chamber began to sway.

"Initially we thought it might have been an airplane crashing into the building," Murray told the Canadian Press.

"But we were standing around wondering what was going on. And I quickly realized it was an earthquake. And then everybody started shouting out, out, out."

CTV's Ottawa Bureau Chief Robert Fife said CTV staff fled the downtown building where the bureau is located and spilled onto a street, to where hundreds of others had also fled.

CTV's Graham Richardson said there are so far no reports of any damage in Ottawa.

Michelle Honsberger was working on the 10th floor of an Ottawa highrise when the building began to shake.

"Just out of nowhere you feel this incredible shock, it was terrifying, the building was moving back and forth," Honsberger told CTV News Channel Wednesday afternoon. "Everyone immediately jumped out of their cubicles and said, ‘What was that, what's going on?' We didn't even wait for an official alarm. People start evacuating immediately, running down the stairs."

In Huntsville, Ont., where G8 summit preparations are underway, OPP Sgt. Pierre Chamberland said nothing was felt in the area, but said security officials plan for everything, including earthquakes.

In Toronto, workers spilled out of office buildings across the city into a heat wave that had temperatures reaching 37 C with the humidex.

"I was in my office at the time and the floor began to shake and it felt like it was sort of on water," one witness told CTV Toronto. "It was quite disturbing."

The City of Toronto issued a statement Wednesday afternoon saying that after an initial assessment, there appears to be no major damage to city infrastructure. The Toronto Transit Commission and other regional transit services said there was no damage to their facilities and there were no interruptions in service.

In New York City, emergency officials said they are investigating several reports of shaking buildings. Residents in parts of New Jersey and Michigan also reported feeling the tremor.

Eastern Canada quakes

There are two seismic zones in the region, according to the Earthquake Information Center's Bruce Presgrave: the St. Lawrence Valley seismic zone, and a seismic zone that runs up the Ottawa Valley.

According to Presgrave, one of the largest earthquakes ever in North America was a magnitude 7 that hit the Charlevoix, Que. region in 1663.

Other quakes that have hit the region include:

  • A 6.5-magnitude tremor just south of Chicoutimi, Que., which shook homes as far away as Toronto on Nov. 25, 1988.
  • A 5.6-magnitude tremor that caused considerable damage in both Cornwall, Ont. and Massena, N.Y.
  • A 6.2-magnitude tremor about 10 kilometres east of Temiscaming, Que., triggered small landslides close to its epicenter.

I was taking a nap when I felt someone bounce the bed beside me. I was home by myself and being half asleep I thought I was having a ghostly experience for a split second. Then when I started to be more rational, I was frightened that the room was vibrating because of some kind of G20 related protest or incident. An earthquake was the last thing I thought it was since they are rare in Ontario. This G20 summit being held so close to home has me very on edge.

I didn't notice anything unusual at the time but one of my cats threw up some water & foam. I did think it was unusual when I noticed there were no construction workers around when I went out at around 2pm though, but just thought they were taking cover in case thunderstorms rolled in. Maybe THEY felt something?

I was in an earthquake in B.C. in 1986 (5.7 magnatude). When it initialy hit, I was standing and felt a complete loss of equilibrium for a few moments before I realized what was happening. This could be a contributing factor in some people not making it out of buildings in a severe earthquake. Three years later when a distant earthquake struck in Alaska, I felt that same sensation again, and realized right away just what was happening. The kitchen lights swayed a few inches either way at that time. I turned on the news a few minutes later, and my suspicions were confirmed. I was wondering if anybody else felt a loss of equilibrium to some degree during this earthquake, it was definitely an experience that I won't forget and wouldn't want to go through again.

Here in GlenCairn (west Ottawa) it started like the sound of an extremely heavy truck or army tank coming down the street. Then a roar and the whole house was shaking - quick and jerking - walls, floors and ceilings, as a lot of homes in this area are built on clay. So we got out quick, as did all the neighbours. Just a few things knocked off the shelves. It came fast and furious, lasting maybe 30 seconds. Then the power went out for about an hour.I can now imagine how scary ones bigger than 5.5 would be.I didn't realize the power of all that hot air coming out of the Parliament Buildings downtown...

I was working at a Wal-Mart here in Ottawa. At first I felt nothing but heard it rattle lightly in the roof. The sound it was making made me think that a powerful air conditioner had just started up, but the AC was already on. The sound seemed to come from the back of the store and progress to the front. Then the shaking hit me, which itself was rather quite strong and abrupt, rather than a slower increase in intensity, followed by a plateau, then a slow decrease. Ironically, it hit just as a customer was asking assistance, but as the quake was diminishing, the customer just shrugged it off and continued with her question, even as some stock was falling from shelves. The store was evacuated as a precaution, but it was after 3pm when we finally reopened our doors.

USGS reported that the earthquake was downgraded to a 5.0 from 5.5 and released the same amount of energy as the Nagasaki atomic bomb about .5 kilotons. Hi, my name is Karen and I live in Niagara Falls, Ontario.I was lying in my bed at about 1:44 p.m. watching President Obama explaining that he fired General McChrystal for calling him a weenie when all of a sudden my bed started shaking. At first I thought that my cat, Kato, was on the bed scratching himself (you see Kato is a pretty chubby little guy and he actually does shake the bed when he scratches) but when I looked down at the bottom of the bed he wasn't there. I watched stunned for a bit at my body shaking back and forth on the bed when it occurred to me that this might be the work of a lazy poltergeist. This frightened me so I looked around my room to see if anything else was moving. I noticed that the fan on my end table was vibrating even though it wasn't plugged in and the stuff on my dresser was jiggling and making a tinkling noise. Right away I thought EARTHQUAKE and then I realized that this could also be the work of my lazy poltergeist (you see if I were to attract a poltergeist it stands to reason that it would be a lazy one as I'm pretty lazy myself). So, I thought I'd better call someone to see if they were feeling the same thing. I called my mother-in-law who lives about four blocks away from me and she informed me that she had felt nothing. Of course then my brother-in-law Bert piped up and announced that he had just farted and perhaps this was the cause. Now if you knew Bert you'd understand why I felt that this had some merit but I still felt that this warranted some further investigation. I figured my best bet was to turn on the news to see if they were reporting any unusual shaking and sure enough there was an earthquake this afternoon!!!So, thank you CTV. I now know that I can sleep well tonight with the knowledge that I will not be awakened by a ghost with no gumption or the beans that Bert had for dinner.

I was driving down Hunt Club Road at 80kph in Ottawa and suddenly the road was "rock and rolling" back and forth. lt was like driving inside deep zig zag grooves on the road while traveling at 80kph. At first I was angry thinking this is another road like Riverside Drive which needs repair until a friend called to advise we had been in an earthquake. Last time we had a earthquake quite like that was in 1983 when you could hear the groaning of the earth like described in book of Roman 8 of the bible. Sign of the times maybe? Significance to the to the G8/20 coming??

Our lamp, couch and babies play pen began to shake at 1:45 PM Eastern in South Porcupine which is just outside Timmins (5 Km) We thought a big truck was going to pass the house but it only took us a few seconds to figure out that it was an earthquake! It was about twenty minutes later we heard on the radio that the earthquake hit Ottawa area. Ottawa co-incidentally is about a 10 hour drive from here.Sure felt weird anyway. Thank goodness no damage no injuries..S

Hi...There was structural damage in Ottawa. We have been in a new house for a week. While I was on the phone with a client I watched in disbelief as 2 of my wife's decorative plates (1 older, 1 very new) toppled from their display perch in the dining room....smashing into hundreds of pieces. My new hardwood floor is dented...but what a story behind the damage!

We live in Cumberland. It was loud and it was scary. The house shook so much that I seriously didn't think the kids would have enough time to make it off the second floor before something bad would happen. Our 3 dogs, who would normally be running around excitedly at the sight of the 4 of us screaming and running out of the house, just ran to the back of the yard, sat there and didn't move! Outside, you could hear people screaming in the neighborhood. It was intense! We have since made amendments to our "fire escape plan" to include "earthquakes". Who knew!

I live about 1000 ft from the ottawa river, on the Gatineau side.-shaking lasted 3 minutes. -the very strong shaking was about one minute with the noise-then I felt the shaking dwindling, to almost nothing, -and about the 3rd minute, it was stronger again, but only for about 10 seconds.I just happened to be walking to the kitchen, as it started, so I was looking at the clock. So I monitored the time. and listened to my plates as they rattled. (they were drying on a rack).

I was in the kitchen about 2ft away from the table and my friend was in the doorway to the kitchen when suddenly both our wheelchairs started to shake and a few things feel around us.
I knew what happened right away because i saw my friends water bottle shaking on the table with noone near it.
My friend has seizures so i looked at her and calmly said, "Andrea, We are having an earthquake."
I called my parents in Sturgeon Falls and the only thing that happened there was their china cabinet rattled.
Andrea called her parents in Bonfield and they never felt a thing.

I'm in Kanata (Ottawa west end) and was at home. It didn't feel like that big of a shake although the windows were rattling. It was mostly just loud for about 10-15 seconds sounding like a large transport was driving down the street, but then petered out.Cell phones were out here for a bit probably because the networks were overwhelmed from everybody calling and texting family and friends all at the same time.I'm watching the news and hearing people talking about their buildings swaying, which they are built to do, especially tall ones to allow them to stay standing during an earthquake. Good advice from Sandi to either get out of the building and away from potentially falling trees, structures or breaking glass, or if that's not possible, get into a sturdy interior doorway or under a desk or table.I remember an earthquake in 1983 in Ottawa with the epicenter in North Gower that felt quite strong. People had plates falling from shelves, lamps falling, and windows shaking, but it was slightly smaller than this one at about 4.5 or something. We've had several smaller quakes since then because as I understand it we are on or near a fault here, but luckily not a major one. :)

To 'Enviornmentalist': This quake has nothing to do with the oil usage or the 'global warming' myth....it is simply the earth responding normally....I grew up in Ottawa and have experienced more minor quakes...scary! I was standing in front of a chip wagon getting my snack when the quake rattled my feet. There is a condo under construction behind this vehicle and I thought that perhaps they were still blasting, but was told there hadnt been anything going on for about a week. Shortly after, the school immediately behind me was evacuated and the young students were ushered out into the play area. Also, on the other side of the street I noticed a large number of employees who worked in a printing establishment had exited their building and were mingling on the front lawn. A friend of mine received a call from his wife who lives in Gatineau on the Quebec side of the Ottawa River. She was in tears because apparently the shock was so intense that many of her dishes were ejected from her cabinet and smashed on the floor. I also live in the Aylmer sector of Gatineau and upon calling home was pleased to hear that no damage happened but that the quake had woken my son and he rapidly ran upstairs from the basement.

I figured that was just as good a place as any to ride things out. It didn't last long enough to grab the cork screw!

when I felt the shaking, it brought back memories of when I was in Santiago when I was woken up from my sleep by the earthquake there. multiply this shake rattle and roll a thousand times and thats what it was like there.... I didn't hear the loud thundering rumble noise here like I heard there....deja vu

A friend of my roommate's and I were sitting and/or standing in the living room with the quake hit. Right away I knew what it was and estimated it to be about a 4 to 5 on the Richter scale. It gave us a good bit of a scare at first, but then it was gone after about 15 to 20 seconds.

Hi, I live in Mississauga, and I clearly felt the earthquake, and to make sure I poured some water in a glass and put in on a flat surface, and as soon as I saw the water movement I grabbed my cell phone and ran outside on street from my town house, but came back after couple of minutes when I saw no one else on streets.... I was expecting more people out.... and after 5, 10 minutes I called my husband to say I felt a tremor, and he lightly dismissed it by saying, it must be the wind, we live in house of wood =P hehe.... it was scary though...

Earthquake - Location is Barrhaven (Ottawa), Ontario - West End of Ottawa The house was moving (rippling effect) and I was with my daughter in her room when the shaking took place. I looked out to my backyard and found my neighbor's new pool rippling/ and bubbling with water come up from underneath the solar blanket. Loud audible (train) noise that lasted for at least 15-20 seconds. Objects fell from closet shelf and lamps in bedroom were shaking as the tremors moved through area. Originally thought that it was a large piece of machinery equipment driving down street to new construction site in new home development.Concerned about what procedures a home owner should take when it comes to looking over home and conditions of structural support and gas leaking?! Any information to provide would be greatly appreciated.

As someone who used to reside in Los Angeles, my sudden experience this afternoon brought me back in time. As I once told my wife, it feels less like vigorous "shaking" (as depicted on TV) and more like the foundation is on soft rubber. My first official "ride" was the 1987 Whittier quake (around magnitude 5.9, I believe); however, the Northridge quake easily trumped it (around magnitude 6.7, I recall). Both definitely rocked and rolled longer than this one today. ...I miss all the car alarms going off.

I think he was pushed to take matters into his own hands. I have a teenage son and if he was involved with a drug dealer I would be furious and try anything to save him like this father did for his daughter. Why do police often say they can't do anything until it's too late? Whether it be a drug dealer or an abusive spouse, the police can't seem to do anything until something really bad happens. In this case they could have raided the drug dealers home and arrested him. The whole town knew what was going on in that house but yet the police chose to do nothing. Release this man and give him a medal for doing the right thing by his daughter. I can't wait to see the episode on W5, I will certainly be watching this one.
