A Canadian detained during a deadly raid on a flotilla of ships bound for Gaza says he was roughed up and held incommunicado by the Israelis.

Rifat Audeh, from St. Catharines, Ont., was one of three Canadians on board the flotilla headed for Gaza when the convoy was stopped and the ships boarded by Israeli security forces.

"The Israeli vessels and helicopters attacked us at night," he told CTV News Channel in a telephone interview from Jordan.

"They beat many of us up; they tied up our hands; we were not allowed to go to the washrooms; we were not allowed to sleep or move; we were barely given anything to eat."

Audeh said that when he and his fellow activists were finally taken off the ship, the largest of the vessels in the flotilla, the Israelis took them straight to a prison.

"They took us to a prison, all of the passengers, without any charge, and they cut us off from the outside world," he said. "We could not phone any lawyers, our families -- nobody knew where we were."

"It was very barbaric and inhumane treatment."

Nine people died when Israeli troops boarded the ships in international waters. The flotilla was carrying aid supplies to the Gaza strip, which has been under a blockade by Israel because of repeated rocket attacks from the Palestinian territory.

Audeh said dozens of the 600 activists on board his ship were wounded in the melee that followed the boarding of the vessel.

"I was injured due to the fact that they tied me up, they blindfolded me and they threw me on the deck even though I was unarmed," he said. "And they beat quite a number of us up actually as well."

Israel has claimed its troops were attacked by passengers on the ship wielding clubs, chains, axes and some firearms and said its soldiers were defending themselves.

Audeh denied those reports, calling the Israeli accusations "ridiculous."

"The real question is what was the Israeli navy doing way out in international waters attacking a humanitarian ship?"

Audeh said the flotilla's sole aim was to bring humanitarian relief to the Gaza Strip, an impoverished area that has been under tight blockades from both Israel and Egypt since 2007.

He was deported from Israel to Jordan, where he is now staying with his parents and said he plans to return to Canada "fairly soon."

The remainder of the nearly 700 activists, including two other Canadians, are expected to be deported from Israel by day's end, the government said Wednesday.

Reports identify the other Canadians as Kevin Neish and Farooq Burney.

The Department of Foreign Affairs has not named any of the Canadians, citing the federal privacy law.

But it confirmed the release of one and said at least one other Canadian has been transported to the airport.

"Based on the latest information available, we understand that these detainees will be en route to Turkey sometime today. They will then be able to proceed to their desired final destinations, " the department said Wednesday.

It added that officials were working with local authorities to confirm the status of the third Canadian.

Monday's attack came in the midst of Audeh's second aid voyage to the Gaza strip.

The self-styled activist and co-founder of Michigan Media Watch joined a similar flotilla in late 2009 as it made its way through Jordan.

If they were allowed to just dock and unload none of this would have happened. There is a blockaid that does not allow anyone in. For 3 years. No one in and no one out. No food or medicines in. Perhaps if you do not understand what a blockaid is you could look it up on Wikipedia or even a simple desk dictionary should provide sufficient understanding. Canada refused to pay attention to the US blockaid on Cuba. We were proud of that. We broke the blockaid on China well before Nixon decided to take it down and grab the glory for being there first. We stood up to South Africa when the Americans did not. We made our own decisions. Now it seems my homeland has degenerated into selfish people who would prefer to be under the thumb of foreign nations instead of our own. It is just not Canadian to be so selfish and so lacking in compassion.

Patrick from GTA says "That sort of thing does not happen in a civilized country like Canada or the United States" - the "activists" were not in Canada or the US were they? No. They deliberately went where they did.

To Dan in Quebec: Mr. Harper is a full partner in this humanitarian crisis. His government was the FIRST to cut all aid to the women and children in Gaza after they held a democratic election that brought Hamas to power. He yet has the ability to stand and speak to us about his efforts to improve the lives of women and children worldwide!

Many here are saying why did not they download their shipment in Israel and Israel would deliver it to Gaza after inspection. The answer is that Isael DOES NOT deliver most humanitarian aid to Gaza! Two weeks ago, the UN issued a report condemning the Israeli blockade and listing its serious consequences on the people of Gaza. The Gazans had to rebuild their destroyed homes using MUD because Israel does not allow any construction material to get in! The blockade on Gaza is a crime against humanity that has to be stopped!

Why were these people so surprised they were roughed up? Surely protesters would knew they would not be welcomed with open arms? This wasn't a cruise. Just ONCE I would like to hear someone say "I knew the risks and I did it anyway. I am that committed."

Israel offered to take the supplies to Gaza if the ships would agree to dock either in Egypt or Israel first. This was a deliberate provocation by hippies and extremists - and they deserve any 'roughing up' that the Israelis supposedly gave them.

Harper, Call in the Israeli diplomat! Condemn this illegal act of aggression. When I go traveling in Europe, I do not want your bad judgment to give my Country a bad name! Stop adopting American policies for the middle east. If you were in power in 2001, we would have been in Iraq.

Considering that the current Governance of Gaza is supported militarily by a regime (the Iranians) that vows to push the Jewish nation into the sea, and end its existance once and for all, and considering this regime is still in a state of war with Israel, (yes it is look it up) the horrible treatment of this poor abused person is in my opinion laughable. Let him try to succor the Jewish state through Arab or Iranian domain and see what happens.

The man in the article was Obviously confused and has a problem with enemy identification.

The IDF did not board that ship in Ankara nor in Cypress. Your lack of sleep and food and movement was controlled by the IHH terriorist group with which you have aligned yourself.

No one expects any of those passengers to give glowing accounts of how well the IDF treated them. Since they were all stooges and pawns of Turkey and Iran's diversion to take the heat off Iran for UN Security Council Sanctions.

If you go looking for trouble...it will find you. Isreal gave a reasonable alternative to helping deliver aid to a people in need. Is it so hard to not provoke others? Activists are getting what they deserve. That sad thing is that people lost their lives. Have people lost sight of that? Shame on the activists, and shame on Isreal.

Oh please. This guy maintains that all of the 'activists' were really just law-abiding, innocent victims that were maliciously and inhumanely abused by the horrific and vicious Israelies. How predictable. Can this guy please explain the videos clearly showing the 'activists' swinging clubs/pipes and so on at the Israelis and of the Israelis being pushed/thrown over the side of the ship? This entire episode (and more to come) is a set-up designed by the left and the Palestinian sympathizers to demonize Israel-again.If you need anything further on this guy's clear agenda, have a look at www.champress.net/index.php?q=en....a 'private news agency owned and operated in Damascus Syria'....you know, that bastion of democracy, freedom of expression....and state sponsor of terrorism.of the free and the home of the...terrorists?Consider the source people.....

Gaza is ruled by Hamas...Hamas was elected by the residents of Gaza. Elect a terrorist group to lead you and this is what you get.Until Hamas recognizes Israel and it's right to exist I don't understand how anyone can be supportive of the Palestinians in this part of the world. These humanitarians are putting the cart before the horse. Get these people you care so much for to concede this basic point Israel has a right to exist....once you accomplish that I may support your efforts! If there were people who threatened my family, who were sworn to bring about my annilation well I don't think I'd let them into my house.

North Korea blows up a vessel with 45 people on it and you hear nothing from that part of the world. It just shows the hatred for the Jews from the Arabs and it starts from an early age,so this situation will never be resolved. If Hamas would lay down its arms the situation would be resolved but that will never happen because men have to be men.

While I don't approve of the way Israel handled this particular situation, I have to say, what do these 'activists' expect? Israel operates proactively to prevent acts of terrorism - but that is because everyone around them seems to want to wipe them off the map. Perhaps if the people in Gaza stopped firing rockets into Israel, the aid ships would be allowed through. Food for thought.

He says they were treated inhumane. Well is it humane to says goodbuy as if it is the last time you see a love one when you go to a local coffee shop because an arab might blow you up? Isreal wants to live in peace, the citizens in Gaza are the ones causing trouble by letting these citizens blow themselves up. The blockade seems to have helpep. And 40 years ago, the US blockaded Cuba to prevent a nuclear war.

Hello ding ding ding time to wake up everybody. Hamas has political platform which states basically the Annihilation of Isreal and the jewish people. These people running Hamas are genocidal maniacs ... someone should welcome them to the 21st century because they are still living in the 18th. Canadians don't support Terrorists and Hamas are terrorists ... Go Isreal go and keep your blockade and stop those crazy confused people from getting through.

Joe: What does the Quran have to do with a country committing an act of piracy in international waters and killing peace activists? Hi,Im sorry, but an activist is a terrorist that thinks he is doing good! Why did the "Canadian" not show his injuries that he had supposedly received at the hands of the Isreali Commandos? All I saw were the soldiers being attacked by the supposed "humanitarians." One Question, If the Commandos attacked at night, how do peaceable people appear in so many numbers armed to repel boarders? Ask him that question! JP, Acton

Mr. Audeh is very lucky the Israelis did not summarily execute him while he was bound and blindfolded. The vicious and unprovoked attack by the IDF on an unarmed aid vessel is nothing short of a criminal act. To those arguing that the killings were justified, ask yourself this: how often are anarchist demonstrators or drunken mobs of soccer hooligans fired upon and killed? When was the last time a dozen demonstrators (even violent ones) were killed when demonstrating? That sort of thing does not happen in a civilized country like Canada or the United States. Our governments have no trouble dispersing and arresting mobs of drunken or violent demonstrators. But kills of demonstrators does happen in places like China, Iran, North Korea - AND ISRAEL. Because, like the rest of the despot nations, Israel has a despicable government with no respect for human rights.

If you were truly a humanitarian ship and truly interested in delivering aid, why not simply put in and let the appropriate parties inspect your aid ? Israel said they'd do it, Egypt said they'd do it. And then send the aid onto Gaza. Israel would not be silly enough to deny Gaza aid if that's all that was being delivered that would be a huge black eye on the world stage for Israel. Why were the activists defiant ? Israel has just as much rights to protect it self and it's citizen's as the US did when they blocked Cuba. If it has to be in international waters then so be it. The law doesn't trump your right to inflict pain and suffering on Israel. The Canadian Navy delivered a huge amount of aid to Haiti with less then 700 people anyway. Something doesn't make sense.

Deliberately provoking tensions between two former peaceful countries. Unbelievable. I'm not a fan of how Israelies treat Gaza, but after reading and understanding the Koran and its followers... I understand why they act as they do.
