Israeli Prime Minister Benjamin Netanyahu cut short his Canadian visit, after his military raided a Gaza-bound aid flotilla and killed at least nine people.

After shaking hands with Prime Minister Stephen Harper in Ottawa, Netanyahu acknowledged he would be returning to Jerusalem earlier than expected.

"I explained to the prime minister that I would have to cut my visit short and go back to Israel," he said Monday morning.

Netanyahu said he wished to reschedule his visit to Canada "at the earliest date possible."

Prime Minister Stephen Harper said Canada "deeply regrets" the raid on the flotilla, but said he understood Netanyahu's need to return home in a hurry.

"Obviously today, we're preoccupied with the events that occurred overnight and I understand you're obviously going to have to cut short your trip and return to Israel," Harper said.

He said that Canada would "be looking in the days that follow to get all the information we can get to find out exactly what has transpired here."

Harper discussed the incident with U.S. President Barack Obama Monday afternoon as the two leaders prepared for next month's G8 and G20 meeting.

Earlier Monday, Dimitri Soudas, the director of communications for Harper, said Ottawa was concerned about the deadly nature of the incident.

"Canada deeply regrets the loss of life and the injuries suffered," Soudas said in a statement released to media.

Netanyahu was previously due to attend a gala dinner in Ottawa this evening. He arrived in Canada on the weekend.

As a result of his quick return trip home, the Israeli prime minister will also skip a meeting with Obama that was scheduled to take place Tuesday.

Netanyahu said he believed that both Harper and Obama "understand that Israel has a great security problem."

Controversial raid

The controversial raid that prompted Netanyahu's return home occurred early Monday morning when Israeli soldiers stormed a Turkish-owned ship and became engaged in a confrontation.

Netanyahu said the soldiers were attacked and "had to defend themselves, defend their lives, or they would have been killed."

He said that Israel's policy is to allow humanitarian shipments into Gaza. But his country is always on watch for dangerous materials that could harm Israeli citizens.

"What we want to prevent coming into Gaza are rockets, missiles, explosives and war materials that could be used to attack our civilians," he said in Ottawa.

"This is an ongoing policy and it is the one that guided our actions yesterday."

He said his government regrets the loss of life that resulted from the raid.

Netanyahu said his country "has no quarrel with the people of Gaza."

"We do have a conflict with the terrorist regime of Hamas, supported by Iran."

Shortly after news of the raid broke, some Toronto residents began making their way to the Israeli consulate on Bloor St. for a peaceful protest.

By the dinner hour, an estimated 300 people were standing on one of the city's busiest streets, waving placards and denouncing the raid.

The group was scheduled to make its way down University Ave. and then across College St. to continue the protest at Yonge-Dundas square.

In a statement, Canadians for Justice and Peace in the Middle East said it believed Israel used "disproportionate force against civilians" and behaved in a "completely reprehensible" manner.

"The Canadian government's unwillingness to question Israel's conduct even in these most extreme circumstances is also disappointing and upsetting," the group said.

But B'nai Brith Canada alleged the flotilla was organized by Islamists "whose obvious goal was to provoke Israel into a response."

This board reads like an Israeli propaganda rag. Israel is a menace to global peace. The only people who believe Israel and it's supporters lies are religious nut jobs who want the USA to kill every Arab and Muslim in the world to make it happy. Israel , we in the western world, are on to you.And to your team of propagandists in North America, we're on to you too. Harper is an antiquated thug. Netanyahu is a vile murderer.

So I wonder what else is in the AID cargo. Something that the nincompoops do not want the Israelis to find? Maybe something that goes bang???

said

I think Israel acted rather hastily obstructing and searching this flotilla. What should have happened the cargo should have been allowed to pass to the Hamas and if they were able to attack Israel with the contents of this cargo than Israel would have the right to retaliate." Sure".Israel has the right to defend itself any which way it can, by whatever means, so that the Hamas or whoever knows if they attack there will always be severe retribution that they are not likely to forget. They are fighting for their survival, against a force that does not recognize their existance.

Israel is a rogue state, trashing every international law in the books. While it claims to be a democracy it acts with impunity against most democratic values in the name of self-defence. Stepehn Harper receives Netanyahu as George Bush would have received Sharon. What has happened to Canada's identity, of justice, peace and acceptance. With these killings Israel once again has slapped the face of the international community. It is now time that Canada as well as the world condemns Israel for it's multitude of inhuman indiscretions.

The only sensible solution to the ongoing violence along Israel's borders is to use the region's natural geographic barriers, which correspond to Israel's original historic boundaries, as a buffer between the Israeli people and those who continually try to destroy Israel. In other words, Israel should occupy and hold the Gaza strip and the entire West Bank. This would signifficantly shorten the length of border to be defended, and enable Israel to use the Jordan River as a natural defence.

The problem with this ongoing situation is that you will never hear the whole truth from either of the involved peoples, their governments or from their respective supporters. There is too much agenda, too much mistrust, too much polarization and too much genuine fear on both sides. Unfortunately, even most people who have no stake or real knowledge of the situation have choosen sides and that does not help at all. Just read the comments. Very few acknowledge that this tragic situation has evolved into something as complicated as it now is.

@AdnanI am always mildly amused when people talk about bringing this or that person before the "international community". What "International Community"?Africa which contributes more than fifty votes at the UN is a shambles. You have the middle east largely run by oppressive dictatorships and On the most powerful body of the "International Community" The UN security council there is veto wielding China a totalitarian communist regime. Are these really the people you want to go to for justice?

Israel offered to distribute the "aid" to gaza but the "peace activists" refused. Nowadays, one needs a passport to enter into the territory of another country. If the "peace activists" intended to enter without visas and proper permits, they asked for it. They are lucky enough that some of them actually survived as if it would be up to the US and Canada, I doubt their ship would be able to sail any longer.

For anyone who will care to listen Israel will, as always, explain with painstaking detail what happened. The only trouble is that the momentum of hatred against a nation trying to defend itself against a confederacy of nations that would like to see it eliminated is an almost impossible PR task. We Canadians can all thank God that it is not our Country that is in Israel's quandary. This fight has never been fair for Israel. The least we can do is get all the facts before rushing to condemn.

What people need to understand is that when Canada places a blockade it prevents Canadians and it's own goods from breaking the blockade, it doesn't prevent other countries from breaking the same blockade. In Israel's case it is not only blockading the open waters and air space belonging to Gaza from it's borders, but also preventing any other entity from breaking that blockade and hence why it is illegal under international law. Besides that point Israel attacked civilians in International Waters NOT Israeli Waters, that's beyond illegal.

@H DayfallahWhat "constant disobeying of UN resolutions and lack of respect to human life"? Are you referring to the anti Israel resolutions put forward by the Arab states? Hardly credible. Given the situation Israel is extremely lenient. Just imagine what it would be like if the roles were reversed and Israel did not have the superior military. There would be no UN talks. No discussions. No apologies. The dictatorships surrounding Israel would simply annihilate the Israelis first and ask questions later.

Killing innocent people should not be tolerated under any circumstances. Nobody believes that peace activists would cause any threat to armed soldiers! Those aid ships hardly make it to Gaza even when Israel makes sure they are safe to go in the first place. Would the activists create obstacles for themselves? Please give me a break. Israel must be held accountable for the crime committed by its soldiers and they must be brought to justice before the international community.

The flotilla was asking for trouble continuing on its course towards Gaza. The flotilla was a cheap publicity stunt gone totally awry. Hamas will just try to score publicity & sympathy points from the unfortunate deaths. None of this is Israels fault.

Israel is no better than the Palestines in any regard. Both have, at least in their eyes, a right to the land they are fighting for. The big difference is that Israel has the money and the backing (for some reason, probably financially) of the west.

this isn't a question of Isreal killing some "innocent". these people put themselves in harms way by attempting to break a blockaid. it has been well known that Isreal, for the safety of its citizens (real Innocents) isolated a terrorist government on its doorstep. trying to break the blockaid when you were presented with 2 options to get real aid to the people of Gaza, one from Isreal and one from Egypt points to either a confrontation was desired. which puts the people on the ship in the role of combatant or there was something other than just "aid" in the holds of these ships.

As Canadians, we should not associate ourselves with this country. What message are we sending to the rest of the world? It has violated international law including war crimes that occurred during the Lebanon war and these crimes will go untried in international court. They have forged our passports, executed leaders ect... ect...

If the UN should be called after Isreal, should it not be called after BP for the oil spill? After all is that not considered a crime against humanity as the are putting money before trying to plug the leak as they think of the moneythe well can give them.

Israel can screen all the ships it wants. Otherwise how can it prevent the Terrorists from importing all the weapons and explosives into Gaza? Most of the ships in the flottila allowed their cargo to be screened so the contents could be delivered. The last ship was out for a fight, refusing to be inspected, then attacking the boarding party. I'm glad that Israel showed restraint and didn't sink the ship.

In the Middle East, owning a weapon or publicly displaying them is perfectly legal and within the rights of those who own them as long as you do not use them in an intimidating fashion. Until a criminal act is committed, i.e. to make use of those weapons against a person or building, or any property belonging to someone else, or to display them in an intimidating fashion, is a declaration of a threat. Israel has blurrerd those lines by saying that if you own a weapon, you are guilty of a crime; regardless of which country you are in. They shoot first and don't bother asking questions later. They do whatever they want and no-one ever says a thing. If the people on the turkish-owned boat did not firer first, or display any weapon of any kind, then Israel is guilty of murder. If they did brandish weapons, and/or fired first, then too bad, so sad for them. Letgs hear all of it - hopefully from an independent body !!!

Netenyahu should be detained as a war criminal, just as we would do the same to the leader of Hamas. How can Harper allow this man in but intervene to ensure George Galloway is banned from this country. Netenyahu is a war criminal. Plain and simple. He does not want peace, he wants eradication of those he despises.

Obviously this was premeditated. Prime Minister Netanyau's next in command in Israel stated that he had intentions of coming to Canada with Mr. Netanyau but he could not because they had prior knowledge this was going to happen.Pretty pathetic when the Prime Minister cannot leave his Country without Palestinian Activists staging events like this to get International attention and sympathy. I have no sympathy for the Turks who did this. I am sorry it led to the death of 10 people. I do believe this was done to try to make the Israel people look bad. as Major David Baruck said, it was premeditated. The Governor of Egypt allowed them access and the Israelies directed them to another location to allow them in but the Palestinian Activists refused to accept what was being offered and instigated the events that took place causing the loss of life.

Some people will try to justify whatever Israel does. This was NOT a raid on Israel. It was to provide aid to the citizens of GAZA around which Israel and Egypt have an illegal blockade. At the most Israel could have demanded to be allowed to inspect the flotilla to ensure that no arms wer being smuggled to the strip. The blockade itself is collective punishment for the citizens of Gaza which can be called Genocide for which both Israel and Egypt are responsible.

Whenever you send ships towards a restricted area and have clear intent on "running" through a blockade, you are in harms way. I don't agree with the commando raids as that just instigates the whole thing; it is also not without reason that some people on the boats had guns, weapons and other such things just in case of being boarded. Until both sides (Hamas and Israel) sit at a table and talk, thinking that this is another case of humanitarian aid gone wrong is foolhardy. You are in a WAR zone. International waters or not, the ships had CLEAR intent. I am surprized that Israel didn't just sink the boats.....

We should not justify the killing of innocent people because of some people's hatred towards Israel. Should we not ask ourselves why do people hate Israel? Regev could not handle the situation going 'out of hand' since Netanyahu left him in charge even with international event unfolding (should have stayed home) knowing that things could erupt with a'flotilla'. Now what happens to Canadian citizen on the flotilla? Is CSIS already on her case? Is she like Galloway accused of aiding abetting Hamas?

With what has happened to Isreal in the past, with terroists trying to bomb them or inflict harm, this seems to be what Isreal has to do. We don't know all the information regarding this incident, but what has been gathered so far, is the Israelies just wanted to see what is in the boat. People who hate Isreal will do anything to try and inflict harm on Isreal, and one of the means is using such ways a boat or anyother ways, and one is using children strapped with bombs. It is unfortunate that this has happened, esp. where lives have been lost, but one can't blame Israal for trying to protect its people.
