WASILLA, Alaska — Former Alaska Gov. Sarah Palin has erected a 4.3-metre-high fence at her home in Wasilla, making good on a promise to prevent her new neighbour -- a writer working on a book about her -- from peering in.

The brown-plank wall has caused a sensation on conservative airwaves and attention online. In live-and-let-live Wasilla?: No real ruckus, according to Mayor Verne Rupright.

"No crime has been reported," he said Thursday. If Palin wants to build a fence on her property, he said, that's her right.

On Monday, Palin took to Facebook to "welcome" author Joe McGinniss, who'd previously written a critical magazine story on the 2008 Republican Party vice-presidential nominee. Palin said he was renting a house next door "for the next five months or so" and wondered what he'd gather "while overlooking Piper's bedroom, my little garden, and the family's swimming hole?"

She said work would begin on a "tall fence tomorrow." Which it apparently did: the wooden barrier can be seen between Palin's home and the smaller one McGinniss is renting on Lake Lucille.

Palin didn't have much to say about it Thursday, aside from joking with a reporter outside the gate of her home about having to build one in the first place. She said she was busy babysitting her nephews and didn't have time to say more.

McGinniss, author of such best-selling books as "The Selling of the President," "Blind Faith" and "Fatal Vision," is planning a book, tentatively titled, "Sarah Palin's Year of Living Dangerously." It could be on book shelves next year.

McGinniss' publishing house, Broadway Books, did not immediately respond to a request for comment Thursday.

Attempts to reach neighbours on either side of her property weren't successful. A chain-link fence blocks one drive, which is also marked "Private, keep out." No one answered at the other, which is posted "Private property. Enter at your own risk."

A tree-lined lane leads to Palin's lakeside home; the gate's also there to help keep gawkers at bay.

At least one Wasilla resident threw her support to the former governor.

"Sarah Palin and her fence, yes. I think more power to her. If people are trying to get up in her business, she should be able to build a fence and have privacy," said 18-year-old Tessa Marie Morris.

"Yeah, she is into politics, and she's high up there, and she's like a celebrity to Alaska and people are going to want to get information and snoop around and get in her business. I think it's a good thing, the fence is good."

Rupright said McGinniss met with him and told him he was researching his book and moving to town. He even told the mayor where he'd be living.

"I was a little surprised by it, but I said, 'That's fine."'

"So at least I knew," Rupright said. "I thought that was a courtesy he paid, and probably the right thing to do."

Does anyone care if she builds such an ugly fence? No real news today or are we just giving her some free publicity. God help the world if this woman was ever President

Any form of media attention is welcomed by Palin even though she will say it's that liberal press coming at her again but in truth it just keeps her elevated in the public eye and maintains her profile so she can garner huge sums for her "hand" written speech making. In reality she's really a no mind who's struck gold!

I think the real tragedy here is that the fence will block those risque photos of Sarah that will jump start the hearts of Republicans everywhere. They will be so conflicted about being on the religious right while having decidely un-religious thoughts about their poster girl they will forget to show up for votes!

I'm with Sarah on this one. She has every right to build a fence to protect her privacy. Besides which, it's easy enough to embarrass her without having to peer into her back yard. Just give her a microphone and a two minute head start, and let her tell you all about her extensive foreign policy experience, what with living in Alaska and all, and what the Bush doctrine is (or isn't), how Africa's a country, and what books she's read lately. Or magazines. Newspapers? No, seriously, this woman has been a godsend to the left. Every time she opens her mouth, the ranks of the Teabaggers grow, and the Republican party splits further down the middle. Keep talking Sarah. Whatever you do, don't go behind your huge fence and close the gate behind you. Nope. I'm on your side. Drill baby drill.

She deserves everything that's coming to her! People actually feel sorry for this woman, why? Look what she promotes, drill baby drill? A right wing nut job cult called the "Tea Party". She did this to herself.

The author is, obviously, a sleazy weasel, but, it's hard to believe that someone with Palin's political-celebrity status, followed family, and new mega-money would continue to reside in a "non-private" setting. She could have bought the neighboring properties (or at least rented the one in question) if she loved the old homestead that much. I guess she's just a "simple Alaskan hockey mom" (or Republican pit-bull) with lipstick.

I think the law should deem that harassment on the part of the author. What audacity he woudl have to plant himself in the house next door.

I thought Spite Fences were against city bylaws? Of course, the Nut Bars, like Palin are always allowed to sit just outside the law.....My only other comment is, if you don't want to be in the Public Eye, don't put yourself in that position by Mouthing Off about things you have little knowledege of....Republicans are against everything, just like Mikey....

Hey last time I checked she had written books about her political life, and she used her fame in politics to make more money for herself, while selling a bunch of BS (her books), to a lot of people. She could of easily fell out of the public eye, but she didn't she took advantage and decided to keep herself famous. Had she faded away graciously, she wouldn't have an author living next door to her. I think she brougth this on to herself, so I don't feel sorry for her at all.

even if she is a nutbar, she is entitled to her privacy. Especially when the neighbor made it known he would be watching. What a jerk!

Wow! Major news...."Woman Builds Fence" Since I'm here though....I agree that this woman deserves her privacy as does anyone else but we have to admit that we are to blame for situations such as this (generally speaking). We live in a society of dirt digging and finger pointing. We buy gossip and celeb rags (and they are nothing more than that at best) which merely fuels the invasion of privacy further. I garauntee that some of those who sit there now and say, "poor woman" will go out and buy this guy's book if it does contain some kind of dirt on her. Simply put, if it were not for our idiotic need for everything celebrity the writer would not be there, the fence would not be there and this type of story would not even be considered actual news because it really shouldn't be.

Although I find Palin to be a nut job and all around menace to global peace, the antics of the media towards her and her family have consistently shocked and repulsed me. Moving in next door to her family is an incredibly hostile act.

I don't really care for her, but she has a family with young children, and I applaud her having this fence erected. This trashy "journalist" sounds like he's a voyeur and just wants to make a name for himself.

Why can't people respect others, I do understand Sara Palin was in the public eye when she was a Govenour and running for office, but this is a little bit over the top. I am glad she put up a fence, maybe this writter will get the message, people's private life should stay private.

It would be a shame if the fence blocked her view of Russia.

How would anyone like being put under a next door neighbour microscope who records and photographs all your family movements and activities so that he can expose your family life style to the whole world so he can get or stay filthy rich at you and your families expense. Why is her right to privacy not respected, why is he not charged with harassment and infringing on her right to peace, quietness and the enjoyment of her home.

I wonder how this supposed author would feel if the roles were reversed. Some people sure try to get ahead at the expense of others. Kudos to Sarah Palin for trying to protect her family.

The only news story here is that sensationalist journalism is alive and well in the USA. Somehow, I believe this story would have been written with the writer being the bad guy instead of Palin if it weren't for the fact she is a Republican rather than a Democrat. I don't care who it is, everyone has a right to privacy and this idiot writer is blatantly challenging the Palin's.

Tim

I know he's trying to write a book and get the dirt on Palin - and I know people love that stuff, and that's what makes for a good book - but to me, it still seems a little low to move in right next door and spy on her. Come on, give the lady some privacy. Not EVERY aspect of her life has to be made public. I bet McGinniss wouldn't want that to happen to him. Neither would you or I.
