Church bells rang out 350 times across Denmark and several other countries Sunday to encourage negotiators assembled in Copenhagen to reach a climate-change deal.

The number 350 signifies the maximum concentration of carbon dioxide, in parts per million, that the atmosphere can support without causing destructive changes in weather patterns, according to scientists.

"It's the most important number in the world," said Bill McKibben, who founded an environmental group called 350.org. "It's the line between habitability on this planet and a really, really desolate future."

The planet surpassed that concentration of carbon dioxide in 1989, and rose above 390 ppm in 2009. However, some climate scientists say the harshest effects of climate change can be avoided with a target higher than 350.

Although Sunday was a day off for delegates at the historic climate change summit, more than 40 environment ministers met for informal talks at the Danish Foreign Ministry. They discussed issues such as cuts to greenhouse gas emissions and financial aid for developing nations to help them combat climate change.

Meanwhile, local police cracked down on environmental protesters.

More than 200 people were detained on Sunday as riot police halted an unauthorized march that tried to make its way to the Copenhagen harbour, according to police spokesperson Flemming Steen Munch.

Police conducted security checks of some of the protesters, Munch said, and found bolt-cutters and gas masks during the search of a truck that led the demonstration.

The latest arrests came hours after police announced that they released most of the nearly 1,000 protesters detained Saturday during a mass climate-change demonstration.

Police said only 13 of the 968 people detained during Saturday's protest remained in custody on Sunday. Three are scheduled to appear in court to face charges of fighting with police.

Police estimated 40,000 people marched through the city to the suburban conference centre where the talks are taking place.

While the protest was largely peaceful, dozens of riot police were on hand to manage the crowd. They arrested activists who they say were near the back of the crowd of marchers when they began to vandalize buildings.

Police say windows were broken at the former stock exchange and at the Foreign Ministry.

An officer suffered minor injuries when he was hit by a rock, while a protester was injured by fireworks, Munch said.

Protest organizers criticized the arrests.

"They have arrested 1,000 people, and they only followed up on 3 of them," protest spokesperson Ida Thuesen said. "There are lots of people who haven't done anything and had no intention of doing anything."

Also on Sunday, Christian leaders from around the world held an ecumenical service devoted to climate change.

The service was led by Archbishop of Canterbury Rowan Williams at Copenhagen's Lutheran cathedral.

Archbishop Desmond Tutu of South Africa was also present, alongside religious leaders from Tuvalu, Zambia, Mexico, Greenland and Denmark.

Hey Wendy. You seem to support those who are gullible enough to soak up misinformation, scientific half-facts and popular political spin because they line up with exactly what they want to hear. That's fine for Elvis conspiracy theories and UFOlogists but, for an issue this importance, critical thinking and relentlessly impeccable analysis is an absolute necessity. Running around demanding global changes based on unsupported and highly suspicious pet theories is downright dangerous. Yes, there is no doubt that climate change is happening. Who would argue with that? However, its a very long jump from there to a conclusion that the change is attributable to human activity. Just because many people want it to be so does not make it true. Your socialist theories on dealing with those who have the audacity to disagree with you are very old and have been used many times in many totalitarian states.

Maybe we could have a "green war" and wipe out a couple of billion people. Only catapults, sticks, swords allowed to reduce the carbon footprint. That would reduce green house gases in a hurry! (haha)

Malthus was right ! Zero population growth would be a start. Cap world population at 1800 CE levels. When achieved CO2 levels will decline.

I usually believe in scientists, but not in this case. The fact that they tried to hide data, lied, looks to me like they are not so sure of their own science,so how are we non-experts supposed to believe them at face value? On the other hand, I know the planet is warming up, and although I do not believe it is from mankind, I do believe in doing something to clean up our planet, whether the scientists are right or wrong--it wont hurt in the long run. But not by throwing our money at aimless theories.

How many times does Climate change have to be proven by the UN, Discover, and scientists around the world, or how many times does a species have to go extinct, rivers like the Murray-Darling in Australia have to dry up, or a giant ice field in Antarctica melt in a few short weeks for you to see what we have brought upon ourselves. Wait, all of you, who ignore Climate Change, actually believe that all of us who believe in climate change want it to happen. Well I sincerely hope that i am wrong and climate change is a myth, but should we stand by and let our only planet be destroyed

Canada is the greenest landmass on this earth, but then it isn't about green is it? It's about who can extort money from whom.If the global warming liberals really wanted to promote their cause, they would point to Canada and say, here we have maybe the only area on earth that is carbon negative. With their low population, 100s of millions of acres of CO2 reclaiming trees and a relatively small carbon footprint, Canada should be what other areas strive to achieve. But no, these idiots want money, not green, so they scew figures to make Canada a major polluter. Well, we aren't, never have been, and won't fall into a socialist trap.Canada, just say no to stupidity.

Climate change is a fact. Humans causing it is not.The earths climate is cyclical with warm periods and cooler periods. Hence the age of dinasaurs and then the iceage. Greenland once being green and farmed. European countries like England once having massive orchards and the climate of the Carribean. It wasn't all that long ago that these same "experts" were warning us that we were headed for a mini iceage and that there would be massive starvation due to food shortages. The so-called hockey stick has already been refuted and now we have all this information coming out that data, facts and studies may not be what they claim due to purposeful ommissions, misdirection and incorrect data.

Skeptics of global warming? There are accomplished climatologists who say the whole thing is natural process, but of course, the global left led by Al Gore (making millions BTW) don't debate, they just shout them down. Let's see how many of you are in favour when you see energy costs to the point the middle class has to decide to eat or heat; when the few manufacturing jobs remaining are gone; the developing countries are raking in our money and doing nothing. Hey, I am all for the environment, but not at the expense of devastating the North American economy, just because Western Europe says so. The protestors, what is comming out of their pockets other than dust? Did they all buy carbon credits to offsett their footprint to go and be hoodlums? Am I wrong, maybe, but I would sure like to see some honest debating of the facts and not the hype. Go ahead, disagree away...

Just remember folks, CTV is an international website, many foreign nationals visit this page and try to mislead the thumbs up thumbs down. For third world countries carbon trading will be a God send, in the West(Canada, USA, Europe) it only means another add to the lowering of our standard of living.I recycle everything in my house(paper, metal, platics, food waste etc.)I don't drive my vehicle at least one day per week.I use one towel for the entire week for showers.I never keep the water running when I brush my teeth.I never leave on anything that needs electricity unless I'm using it. I care about the Earth, but that doesn't mean I think it's coming to an end if we don't do something drastic about carbon dioxide emissions. Carbon dioxide is a building block of life. Carbon dioxide is used to fertilize plants in greenhouses to make them grow quicker. Volcanoes emit carbon dioxide. That doesn’t mean we shouldn’t try to make less pollution and our government should always try to inspire people to care about their environment, but if we truly cared about the environment and wanted to make it better there wouldn’t be an issue about how to make money off the process. We don't need a new global government to dictate our lives. What next, being taxed to breathe?

The circus continues. Yesterdays pics of clowns and signs of save planet stop capitalism pretty much sums it up. Socialist clowns. Maybe just plain anarchists. Copenhagen like Kyoto misses the point. global warming is cyclical. Yes human activity is a problem because we are so overpopulated 6 billion on a planet that may sustainably have 1/2 billion max. Deforestration by slash and burn farming and extensive monoculture are responsible for most of this heating. Burning carbons be it hydrocarbon or plant matter like rain forests accounts for rise in CO2.Copenhagen's circus and the gynormous amount of political and theatrical hot air accounts for the rest

The science isn't official on global warming yet, climategate should have informed us at least that much. The call to protect the earth is a noble call, but to tell people to shut up and let there be no debate is disgusting. There should always be free debate. If the issue was conclusive the voice of skeptics wouldn't be screaming so loudly - there is always truth on each side of the debate, don't put all your marbles with one side.Tyrants are usually pretty good at locking up those who don't agree with them, I guess a large section of our society seems to think that that is a good idea now a days.

The reason that churches are helping the cause of trying to prevent planet-wide catastrophe due to climate change is that they recognize this as a moral issue, as do the "socialists" who also support rational control of the potential damage done by our short-sighted envirnomental policies. Both the left and the right have people who are future oriented, who care about the welfare of our descendants. Those who profess to be "conservative" but who show contempt for the environnmental movement are really nihilists who care more about their pocketbooks than their grandchildren. Their paranoid fantasies about a "world-wide conspiracy" would be laughable if they weren't so damaging. There's nothing "conservative" about destoying the environment. It's only big money industrial interests who benefit, in the short term, from allowing global warming to continue unabated. Unfortunately, they've managed to politicize this issue so that unthinking Republican/Conservatives who respond in a knee-jerk fashion have fallen for the nonsense of global warming denial. That's become evident as they crow about "climategate" which has turned out to be a tempest in a teapot, with the "evidence" against climate change now firmly refuted, as is the fantasy that the earth has been cooling in the last decade. Calling environmentalism a religion is as absurd as a creationist claiming that evolution is a religion. Both claims are ridiculous, and for the same reasons.

Yeah Wendy! and lock up everyone else who questions authority and wants ALL the facts...in fact, bring back the Inquisition! No, don't, burning people creates pollution.Funny how Global Warming recently changed to Climate Change...well, the climate is always changing, no one disputes that, but if cow manure is one of the top culprits in "greenhouse" gases, and Canada's man made emissions are 2% of the global total, what's the issue? Eat pork?

YEAH! Canada won an award! YEAH! Why? I assume it has something to do with non-hysterical reason and ethics. Now TELL US WHY! Just Bing for "Climategate" (Google's "ethics" save you from this information. But then, Google's historically donated to their Senior Advisor Al Gore).

@Slewhigh Yendick. You said that these groups are liberals? That´s akin to saying that all KKK and NRA members are a bunch of neo-cons. But we both know that these are fringe groups who exploit certain political parties where they believe they can make the greatest in roads. I´m liberal yet I don´t buy into this global warming theory. I´m sure you´re a conservative but most likely do not drive into the city in a beat up pick up truck with shot guns on your rack and a confederate flag painted on your hood. Politicians enjoy creating division so they can place themselves in power - don´t play into their game. As a liberal I get to have bragging rights that it was our policies that kept Canada´s banks unscathed from the global termoil. I remember Harpers conservatives demanding we become deregulated. I promise if the liberals yielded to your demands, global warming would only finish off what the conservatives started. Give credit where it´s due...you have your own good days and bad. We do as well.

Keep those fossil awards coming . Every one we get is probably about 5 billion we haven't wasted on this scam . What i don't understand is why they don't just be honest about it . I have no problem helping out poorer countries and their citizens , which is what a large part of this is about , as long as they're trying to help themselves and are reasonably democratic and lawful . Being lied to , on the other hand , to give money for something unproven , riddled with scams and lies and questionable data is a whole different story .

When you read the entire article you see how the churches rang the bells. MANY different religions joined in,, seems this global warming thing is the beginning of a religious cult.....A bit of a dichotomy, don't you think?? By that I mean, most of the supporters of this hoax are left-wing socialists, for whom science is the new religion, and generally shun Christianity and dismiss Christians as extreme right wing fundementalists and members of the "moral majority". This group has been marginalized and chastised,, but now, all of a sudden they are legitamized and embraced .Srange,, very strange indeed.
