Liberal Leader Michael Ignatieff says he will no longer support Stephen Harper's minority government.

In a speech Tuesday to the Liberal caucus, Ignatieff said Harper's time as prime minister, "is over."

"I cannot support this government any further," Ignatieff said to cheers and wild applause, following a meeting with his Liberal caucus, which is on retreat in Sudbury, Ont.

"We will hold Stephen Harper to account and we will oppose his government in Parliament."

Sources have told CTV News that the Liberals will put forward a non-confidence motion to force an election this fall -- although they need the support of the NDP and the Bloc Quebecois for that to happen.

Speaking in Calgary, Harper said Canadians selected their government when they went to the polls less than a year ago and aren't keen for yet another election.

"I haven't met a single Canadian who is saying they want to see an election right now. I just don't find that," Harper said.

"I think Canadians have been pretty clear. They want Parliament to focus on the economy."

NDP MP Thomas Mulcair agreed with the prime minister, saying "we'd better have a bloody good reason for forcing a fourth general election in five years.

"So if Mr. Harper goes about being provocative as he has been in the past, going after key things that Canadians hold dearly like women's rights and the environment, then we'll throw him out of office because he'll have provoked it," Mulcair said.

"If, on the other hand, Stephen Harper comes into Parliament with a willingness to work in the public interest, then we're going to take it on a case-by-case basis."

Mulcair's cautious words stood in stark contrast to Ignatieff's fiery, campaign-style speech, during which he attacked Harper's record on the economy and other issues.

"Mr. Harper, you have failed all four tests," Ignatieff said. "You've failed to protect the most vulnerable. You've failed to create jobs. You've failed to defend our health care. You've failed to produce a plan to restore our public finances."

Ignatieff said his party "can do better" at managing the economic crisis, protecting Canadians abroad and making the country competitive.

"Stephen Harper doesn't get it," Ignatieff said. "He doesn't get that Canada's in a race -- that we've got to position our country to compete in the 21st century. We've got to make Canada a world leader again -- and we've got to do it now."

Possible September showdown

CTV's Graham Richardson said the Liberals could move to topple the government by putting forward a non-confidence motion on a previously agreed upon opposition day at the end of September.

However, a vote on the ways and means portion of the budget is scheduled for one of the first days after Parliament resumes on Sept. 14, Richardson said, which means the opposition could bring down the government at that time.

"We're talking about timing, and when in fact it's going to happen this fall as opposed to if it's going to happen this fall," Richardson told CTV News Channel.

When Parliament went on summer break, the break down of seats was:

  • 143 for the Conservatives
  • 77 for the Liberals
  • 36 for the New Democrats
  • 48 for the Bloc Quebecois

On Tuesday afternoon, Transport Minister John Baird dismissed questions about working with the NDP, saying that the opposition party hasn't shown "any desire or willingness to work with the government" in the past.

"I think it is most regrettable that we're seeing this kind of political bravado from Michael Ignatieff and the Liberals," Baird said.

Earlier Tuesday, Liberal finance critic John McCallum said that his party isn't satisfied with the Conservative government's management of the economic crisis, saying the Tories were too slow at getting fiscal stimulus money out the door this summer.

"Well I certainly think a strong case can be made for a change in government on grounds of economic mismanagement because yesterday's growth numbers showed that, far from leading the G7 out of recession, Canada was dead last in its economic performance in the second quarter," McCallum told Smith.

'Political brinkmanship'

According to pollster Nick Nanos, Ignatieff and Harper are locked in a game of "political brinkmanship."

Though the leaders have faced-off on political issues before, Nanos said it will be difficult for Ignatieff to stand down this time for fear of appearing weak in the eyes of voters.

Nanos added that the Tories hammered Stephane Dion, Ignatieff's predecessor, with similar accusations during last year's election.

"I don't think (Ignatieff) can turn back, because if he does, the comparisons with Stephane Dion will pop up -- they already have -- in a New York minute," he said.

Still, Nanos said the outcome of a potential campaign will depend on how the parties pick their battles.

"Any kind of election about the economy will naturally favour the Conservatives, because that's part of their core brand strength," Nanos told CTV News Channel Tuesday evening.

He added that the Liberals will benefit from issues like healthcare and national unity, the former which appears to be a growing issue with Canadians once again.

How perfect of a setup!!! Anything but change, really, is how Ottawa works. We are way overdue for correcting the problem of the Senate (Liberals and NDP won't touch that issue) and while Harper never impressed me, I'm sick of personality politics, I want a revolution in how democracy works and that has to be grassroots. Let's put in at least 25 Greens, keep a functional minority (a majority of either Conservative or Liberal would be a horrifying failure at this point), and I think the NDP needs to either fold or get new leadership that is realistic (won't happen). We all know so well how the NDP can spot a problem, but very few have confidence in the NDP being able to lead with or even suggest acceptable solutions.

I can hardly believe this nonsense, a fall election; you have got to be joking!!! We do not need an election; we just need these clowns to start working together to get this country back on its feet. Mr Ignatieff is so sadly mistaken if he believes that Canadians want this election. We do not have the money, we do not have the time and we do not have the patience; it’s outrageous to think that we have to go through this all over again.

If these comments and the reviews that they are getting are any indication the majority out there feel the same way that I do. Stop this foolishness get on with the business of tending to the real issues out there, the economy, health care, the environment. Enough of this ego-bolstering garbage Mr Ignatieff, there are more important issues at hand. If you carry through with this I believe it will mean the downfall of the Liberal Party and you will be to blame. I have been a Liberal Supporter my entire life and if you do this I will never again vote Liberal, my vote will be Conservative on sheer principle alone and many other Canadians will do the same. We need someone in office that is there for the good of the country and you are not that person and your actions in calling an election will prove just that. Someone that is willing to waste valuable time and money on an election that is not needed or wanted does not have the best intentions of this country at hand.

I say right here and now that if a fall election happens there is absolutely no question, my vote will be Conservative as Mr Harper is obviously the only one with his head and heart in the right place and that is for the good of this great country.

Those complaining that this web site is acting merely as a mouthpiece for the Conservatives, and that the Liberals will regain their "rightful place to govern Canada" in a fall election might want to consider a few things:

- though still a minority, Conservative seats actually went up in the last election over the previous one
- Conservatives came within 10 seats of winning a majority in the last election; there were more than 10 ridings where the opposition merely squeeked in and these could easily go the other way
- Conservatives are pulling similar numbers of seats as Chretien did during his third election. Chretien only got a majority because conservative votes were split. As long as BQ remains a factor, majority wins by either party are unlikely
- Conservative polling numbers show that they now have the momentum (which the Liberals squandered by their relative silence all summer)
- Bloc support is up in Quebec; Liberals can't count on gains in Quebec
- Liberal support is practically none-existent in western Canada; that's not likely to change

Here's the final one that might be hardest to swallow for Liberal fans: CTV is hardly "Fox News North". Maybe the views expressed here actually reflect ordinary Canadians and maybe, just maybe, they're relatively pleased with Harper's governance over the last 3 1/2 years, the way he's handled the economy, the fact we're paying less tax...

OOOH! Wouldn't THAT be a bitter truth to swallow?

The PR campaign going on this comment board is disgusting. Yes there are some legitimate comments, and yes CTV readers are more prone to support conservatives but there are far too many scripted entries that seem to come from the party itself. Either some people are just parroting conservative slogans which shows little intelligent thought or the party itself is involved as part of their PR campaign. I suspect the latter.

To be honest, I'm sick of the political bickering that's been going on in Ottawa for the past many years. I'm genuinely tempted to run for office myself, because I cannot support any of the three political parties.

If not, then I'll use my role as a campus journalist to get some decent accountability out of them.

Ignatieff's statement is irresponsible. If you cry wolf, you will get what you deserve...defeated. Ask Stephan Dion. Prime Minister Harper is smart and he is prepared for a fight. Six elections in 12 years is outrageous and Canadians need to peak out clearly. The next election should be 2012. Minority governments don't work.

Let's really screw with their minds. Tell the pollsters whatever you want, and then everyone vote for the greenies.
There are a couple of major benefits to this.
1 All pollsters would be out of business.(Ahhh...sweet thought.)

2 We could go back to the stone age and start all over again.
The entertainment would be priceless.

Canada's economy has come out of recession and is showing signs recovery is underway. If the Liberals wait too long, when the economy has or is clearly recovering, then they will lose the opportunity to possibly win (or even call) an election. However, if Liberals call an election and win, just when Canada's economy is set to recover, then any recovery after they take office they can claim to be their doing. So, in all, this is simply a sneaky (downright dirty and cowardly) way of gaining power.

I can find no logical reason for bringing down the Conservative Government at the present time. The way they handled Canadian affairs and fought for Canadian interest has been within acceptable reason - no serious faults can be drawn from their actions - no matter how the Liberals try to paint the truth with false colours.

I used to vote for Liberals but their actions in many areas, such as cutting money to military, various scandals, and obvious bias to Quebec and Ontario, has left a very bitter taste in my mouth. And when they try to pull a stunt like this - I, as a Canadian citizen, does not appreciate it.

To those of you that think Conservative supporters:
1-- get paid to comment
2-- are ignorant
3-- have no idea about anything.
think again.

I for one do not get paid and the Conservatives do not even know that I support them.I am just someone who can think for herself, and have lived through the many years of Liberal rule, and yes, even voted for them at times. My eyes were finally opened to all the Liberal lies and scandals. Now I feel that the Conservatives & PM Harper are the right ones for the job, but somehow to a Liberal that makes me evil.I have noticed that the Liberal supporters on these boards are very hateful and use very nasty comments about anyone that supports the CDonservatives. Why is that???

Seat count...
143 for the Conservatives
77 for the Liberals
36 for the New Democrats
48 for the Bloc Quebecois

So the Liberals have half the seats of the PCs, the NDP a quarter as many and the Bloc a third... in a partiamentary democracy the PCs are mandated to govern - they have after all twice the seats of their nearest rival.

Since the NDP are a permanent protest party, the only way the government can be defeated is for the Liberals to partnership with the Bloc. That will make for interesting advertisements come election time.

um Michael? No. Just no. Take a time out. The government is fine, our economy is way healthier than most countries right now, and this is coming from someone who was laid off due to the recession. But I'm not bitter...so what's your deal? I'm pretty sure you aren't having to worry about when you'll eat next, whether you'll be evicted next month, or whether EI will make a decision on your claim, so what's the deal? I could go on but for some reason I doubt you'd really care all that much. Please just take a seat. No, Michael, not on that side. The opposition side please. Thanks, that's great.

If we acted or ran our household like they have been doing, most of us would be out on the streets looking for a new job. Grow up and for once in your life think about All Canadians and our needs. Hello, this is the 21st centry and we need strong leadership in Ottawa that's going to work hard for the betterment of all Canadians. Stop the name calling and just do the job you were elected to do. If you do that, just then you would earn the respect of all Canadians.

@ THE LIBERAL WHINERS

Reading all the posts from Liberal crybabies complaining about the supposed overabundance of Conservative supporters in this forum has been a treat today.

My favorite comments, certainly, are those from “conspiracy theorists” convinced that the Conservative Party itself is working behind the scenes to dominate this open, public board operated by an independent news/media corporation.

Talk about paranoia. Really, you folks need a leather couch and a mental hygiene professional.

It never ceases to amuse me how Liberals, typically, can never get over the fact that EVERYBODY doesn't see the world just like they do...with their coke-bottle goggles on. They get so flustered and upset; and, of course, it’s mirthful to observe.

The reason the cotillion was proposed in the first place, was due to Harper's proposal to take away federal funding for political party's. Which I happen to agree with why should my tax money go to any politician especially ones that I am opposed to. I think the liberals are so corrupt and morally bankrupt that all they are concerned with is getting and retaining power, which they seem think is a mandate from heaven. I think the sooner that the coup leader is gone the better. He wasn't even elected by his party before he took power, he was annotied. Look who was behind him Bob Ray and ugal Dosange, two failed provincial leaders. Bob Ray destroyed Ontario's economy not that long ago do you really want this group of clowns running this country.

Adam Gun,

For your information, the reason why McGuinty is going through with the HST is because of Flaherty.Notice how the other provinces are doing this? It is not just Ontario, it is also a Federal problem.

Meanwhile, the PC and the NDP leaders of Ontario have petitions going around for people to sign on to stop the HST.

The only way to stop the HST, is to stop it on the federal level where the problem started in the first place.

I am telling you this because you look like a fool for pointing it all on McGuinty.

Ignatieff makes the comment Harper as guided Canada poorly thru the recession. Unlike the rest of the G8 countries, Mr. Ignatieff, not one of Canada's banks needed a bail out. This is thanks to Harper and the conservatives. What would of been the result had you been in charge, Canada would of likely got up the tube. Your claim to fame, your EI reform, they claim that will give the recession strength to get another grip on Canada. Ignatieff get off the stage go back to the US, leave Canada alone.

Sick of going to the polls, I am still not going to vote for the Liberal Party. Niether will the rest of the country that voted last fall either!!

Funny thing is that Harper's supporters are saying that current government and Harper himself is doing a great job. What? are you serious?

Do you know that Harper is Liberal's puppet? Harper will do anything Liberal say because he want to stay in power.

So that mean Liberal did great job so time for Liberal to get majority that they deserve!

The smart play here for Harper is what he has been doing off and on since he became prime minister i.e. play the centre-left parties against each other.

He can do that this time by raising the spectre of a coalition as a kind of Cerberus (Three-headed monster) because less than a year ago the opposition parties formed one and it wasn't very popular.

This will force Ignatieff to distance himself from the opposition parties who will then retaliate and they'll be sniping at each other again.

But it is unlikely that Harper or Ignatieff or anyone else will win a majority government. The Bloc has removed Quebec from the playing field meaning that elections will be won mostly in Ontario and BC.

Harper is going to take some lumps and win fewer seats this time because he doesn't have a Liberal counterpart with a communication difficulty but at least he can try to keep the opposition parties from ganging up on him by playing the coalition card again.

One thing is likely: voter fatigue will result in a spectacularly low turnout with this being our fourth election in a little over five years.

Finally, now we know there is an election coming up. There is about 3, 4 votes coming up in the Parliament. And if Iggy is serious about this, the govt will fall.

I can't see another conservative govt coming to play when other countries are changing in a different direction.

Just look at Japan, and the USA, and other countries, that voted out Republicans, and Conservatives.

Canada will be standing alone with very little international relations with other countries. And we can only sell products to one another for so long and then you have to export. With a crappy foreign policy, and international trade agreement, then you wonder why the travel and tourism and manufacturing sectors are hurting.

It is all Common sense!

The PM has broken the law, lied to Canadians, pushed his partisan ideas when asking for co-operation and blackmailing the people by holding back on promises. I am sure that the logging business in Quebec will remember when the PM promised them billions....only if he got re-elected and he has been a disgrace on the international scene...who will forget the attack he made on the Liberal Leader and than had to retract on his comments. This is something that a leader of a country does not do....air their domestic laundry at an International event. Harper is in it for himself...even some of his party see this and have expressed such like. Yes, we do need an election. Perhaps the Conservative will put someone in as leader who is for the country and not for themselves.

Since when does a man who abandoned Canada for thirty years to teach at Harvard have any say in how this country is run?

Um, since he came back to his country and became the Leader of the Official Opposition.

Look, I know a lot of Conservatives seem to have a lack of knowledge with how our system of parliamentary democracy works, but it’s been that way since the 1800s. Maybe you should read up on it, it’s called “Westminster Parliamentary Democracy”. Me, I learned about it in grade six.

Also, I don’t why you’re so upset that he spent time travelling the world and teaching at some of the best schools on the planet (Harvard, Oxford). Having a PM that’s intelligent and familiar with world issues really isn’t such a bad thing. I know it’s not what we’re used to, but don't be afraid - embrace it.

Whoa, everybody take a chill pill and relax. I don't think there will be an election.

What the Liberals are trying to do is display a stronger hand and not allow the Bloc and especially the NDP to undermine them.

For 3+ years, the NDP have voted against the Conservatives at will knowing the Liberals would either weakly support the Govt or abdicate their responsibility. Dion was roasted over this policy time and time again. Ignatieff is basically calling out the NDP's bluff and forcing them to show there hand.

Watching the CTV National news last night, there was some Liberal big-whig advisor who said (and I loosely quote) 'the job of the Opposition Party is to be ready to fight an election.'

I found that refreshing, rather than the typical "we'll pull the switch" rhetoric we have been hearing from the politicians.

Sadly, the politicians have resumed their rhetoric, believing their job is to CAUSE an election.

Even more sadly, if the Liberals do force an election and muster a win, the Conservatives will deem it to be THEIR job to force an election so they can return to power.

The arrogance of it all astonishes me.

Obviously the Liberals are only interested in obtaining power - they don't seem to care that our economy is just starting to come out of a very bad time and we don't need this kind of disruption right now. I, for one, will not be voting for the Liberals if an election is called anytime soon.

What big egos the Liberals must have, their only interest is in Iggy being "King/President of Canada. He has been away so long I am sure he does not have the job title straight.

It is clear that he has no interest in the fact that the majority of Canadians do not want another election in the midst of a global financial recovery period. I am sure that the maritimes and the west will soon be forgotten in a Liberal Government as per normal practice.

Another point is why is Ralph Goodale not in the Liberal shadow cabinet? He was good enough to be a Minister of Finance in a former Liberasl Government. Why is he so invaluable now?

Keeping with former Liberal policies how much of the current and projected Department of National Defence spending will they cut if elected?

Stephen Harper and his government are doing a good job. The countries economy is rebounding in a world wide recession that the Liberals have blamed on the Conservatives. In the Liberal mindset it must only make sense to ride the wave of the improving fortunes for their own purposes.

Who trained you guys, Jack Layton? If grabbing headlines and non preformance would win awards the Liberals and the Federal NDP would win all of the awards.

This is not the time for an Election, just as we are emerging from the global recession thanks to the Conservatives. Tax paying Canadians are tiring of the thought of yet another Election and the cost of which will be shouldered by the tax payer. We pay enough taxes already and i don't think the Liberals have much to bring down the Conservatives and force an Election. As for improving health care wait times. I agree, more must be done. However, the whole health care wait time issue grew from 12 years of Liberal power. They did nothing to adress the problem then, and will do nothing now.

Could non-conservative not care enough to be involved in open discussion with people who share different views?

Instead, he waited until the Liberal Party was in turmoil and lead by an incompetent scholar to make his return. However, it seems the Liberal Party is in just as much trouble one year after Dion's failure as another incompetent scholar has taken the Red reins. When are the Liberals going to learn, politics is for those who know what they are doing, not for those who are all hot air and little else. Politicians who are all hot air are quite visible to the general public. Say you get voted in, Mr. Ignatieff, what then? They change what they stand for 85 times a week it seems. We're finally (some say) beginning to come out of a terrible recession, so what do they want to do? waste a pile of taxpayer's money in an unnecessary election! if that's how they start, wonder how they'll finish? how ridiculous. Harper's government has been imperfect; Harper himself is imperfect; but since that has been true of every government, in every country, for every and any period of time...what is the issue?

Sadly, the issue is Ignatieff wants to be PM. That's it; that's all. And, so, we are likely to have another acrimonious election, for no reason and with no different results.

Someone needs to save the LPC from itself, and I suspect it won't be a former NDP politician, or a Trudeau. They need an actual leader, an actual platform, and to accept that having governed for years does not give the automatic right to do so. In short, earn it.

As for the CPC, they will end up with another minority very likely, because right now there is no rational reason to change in the minds of most people. It's too bad, really, because with a majority we could compare the CPC to the LPC of past more directly. As it is, all we have is a struggling minority that has had to act within the confines of minority.

There is another puzzling item that eminates from the Harper Hater's work group.I could be missing a piece of this puzzle, but it seems odd to me that the same Harper Haters who accuse Harper of not governing as a real "conservative", are the same ones that are whining about his "neo-con" agenda.

A change of direction is almost always a difficult time for any nation. As a former supporter of the liberal party,I had reservations about a change to Conservatives. That is exactly why I totally enjoyed the results of the last vote.We got some change, but NOT a Harper majority. In my view, voters asked for a kind of a "test drive" of this new direction.Given that the Liberals became totally unfit to govern, this result seemed to be an almost perfect solution. Not for Liberal or Conservative loyalists, but for Canadian voters that actually think for themselves, and try to chose the party with the right policies.

Another election IS NOT in the best interests of anyone other than the politicians.Liberals who think they can win,or for Conservativs who want a majority government."We the people",get screwed over.
My fellow Canadian "Red X" is tempted to blame the Conservatives.I am more inclined to blame the opposition. When Ujjal Dosanjh proudly proclaimed "we will not co-operate with this government in any way",even as the results of the last election results were still being counted,I knew full well he meant it.And that truth has come home to roost.
And finally, while I seldom agree with you "Red X",I would welcome a beer and a debate on these issues, please. But it's a bit rude, condascending, and totally partisan to refer to me as "Dearest".Our different interpretations of events and politics is a poor excuse to dislike each other.Or is that just more Liberal "spin"??

I was just saying before Ignatieff spoke that he can't back out anymore and he really doesn't care about Canada or Canadians as if he did he would not EVEN think of having an election at this time, The only thing he is thinking is if Harper stays in any longer the Liberals won't have a chance. Ignatieff said Canada needs to get known internationally, isn't that what this Prime Minister is doing and has been doing the last year or so. Hello! Oh our poor health care, roads, education,EI if the present government doesn't keep control even though they are a minority. also Ignatieff knows he can be saved from this stupid mistake if the other two parties don't go along with him. SHAME! SHAME! SHAME! oh my poor taxes BOO-Hoo.

An Election is desperately needed for Stability one way or the other.

Harper's insistence of Governing for his Supporters, and peek-a-boo politics for the rest promotes Division within the Country. Money for National Infrastructure is yet to materialise while the Deficit skyrockets to his "preferred" Canadians benefit.

It's time for Ignatief to fish or settle for cuting bait.

Jack Layton has provided the only real Natl opposition to Harper's antics to date.

Mr. Ignatieff you have stated that
the Conservative Government is on life support.

CTV today conducted a poll by
asking the viewers of ctv.ca the following question:

Who would you vote for in a
possible fall election.

Conservatives 59%

Liberals 28%

NDP 7%

Others 6%

I ask you again Mr. Ignatieff who
is on life support?

Do you have the trust of the Canadian people?

Once again we see the Liberals trying to implement their supposed God-given right to govern Canada while disguising it as their way of helping the average Canadian. The Liberals are not doing this for the benefit of Canadians. They are doing this for the benefit of the Liberal Party. Anyone with just a shred of common sense should understand that. Now that the economy is starting to rebound, the Liberals want to quickly be in power to take credit for the recovery.

I can't wait...to vote Conservative. I hope we finally get a majority to get this country moving again. This constant threat of election takes away from the issues. We have to get out of the recession, we have a potentially bad flu season coming, and many other issues. The Conservative government has done a lot over the past 4 years, more than the previous Liberal government has. Most people don't want an election. Most people are still concerned for their jobs. Most people want the government to work. Iggy doesn't get it. He is just hungry for power, and the electorate will show him the door.

As for making us all the most educated, most enlightened, most productive people on the planet by 2017.....give me a break! We are an immigrant nation that is a pipe dream.

He's looking for a place in history and I think he'll get it. Right up there with Mulroney as a leader who brought a once focused, responsible party to it's demise.

Without Quebec which he cannot win it's a minority at best for someone and I guess that's good enough for Lord IGGY! Afterall they have raised a lot of money from people and if he doesn't spend it now someone else will down the road.

So you think the 36% (yes 36%, not the 30% you claim) of the population who voted for the Conservatives have a low IQ. Same could be said for the 37% of 38% of voters that voted for the Liberals during the years they were winning their majorities.

Simply that they will "oppose" the government.

I think pointing to "fear" this morning was appropriate...simply because it underscores the increasingly common inability amongst Liberals in this forum to put forth an idea, stand behind it, and debate it. Instead, you stamp your feet, feign outrage, and then wave a white flag in your opponent's face. Hardly "brave." This directly parallels Mr. Ignatieff's behavior. Interesting.

There's my rebuttal, Rick. Enjoy.

Or the one that suggests that spoiling a ballot is going to help at all.I know the choices are not always good.We should have remembered that when we were picking on Americans for electing their former president G.W.Bush.We don't always get the choice we would like, but it's still better to vote for "the least offensive candidate",than to let others decide the fate and direction of the country you live in,and hope to pass on to future Canadians.
Or suggesting that Harper is spending to much, and should be removed.I guess I agree that his spending is troublesome, but how is electing a party that like taxing and spending even more tha Harper, going to help working Canadians?? Harpers debt is a problem,so lets elect Liberals?? Duh!!
Our military people and our veterans deserve better.I agree entirely. But it's certainly not Liberals or the NDP who will make that happen.Of all the political parties,ONLY Mr.Harper and his party respect our brave citizens who serve in our CF.
Political differences of opinion about issues of the day are expected. But for those who support Liberals,I would ask one question."If you had so many good ideas for improving the situations in all of our broken institutions, why didn't you implement them when you were in power" ??

Are you still arguing that claim? The Bloc wasn't part of the coalition? Really? So if the Bloc didn't agree with something and choose to vote with the conservatives you don't think the Liberals/NDP would have changed something in their favor just to keep the vote?

The Lib/NDP didn't have enough seats to take over the government on their own, they had to have to Bloc seats as well. It doesn't matter that they werent' going to be in the cabinet. Without the Bloc a coalition would be pointless.

Defintion of Coalition: An alliance, especially a temporary one, of people, factions, parties, or nations.

This is exactly what they had.

Let it go and change your name to Liberal, you claim that your a conservative but yet ever time you make a comment you are supporting the Liberals.

Ignatief and the Liberals are working on the assumption that when they call for an election, the other parties in opposition will just fall in line and follow the "leader".

If Layton or Duceppe, on the other hand, said "NO" then Ignatief would be hanging out a mile, his credibility would be destroyed, and he would lose Quebec in an instant because they would not trust him.

Knowing this, Ignatief will call for support of the other parties before he makes a move, there will be political debt and the coalition will be hoisted on Canadians but in an election format. If that happens the Conservatives have the wedge issue they need to drive for a majority.

Ignatief and the Liberals could be harmed over the long term by the refusal of any opposition party to go with them when calling an election. The spoils that would go to the NDP, the BLOC or even to the Conservatives would be a tempting reason to use this strategy against the LPC.

Wow. I don't even know where to begin. This is made up, right? You can't be serious.

Sorry your wife has to work as a cashier, but a lot of people with educations, who were born in this country, find themselves in the same position when they're suddenly turfed from a well paying job. Everyone needs to eat, and we don't all automatically turn to the welfare lines.

If you think the Harper government is to blame for the immigration problems in this country, you've got a lot to learn. How about contacting the medical associations in each province and see how they rate your wife's nursing experience. I'd like to know who your Liberal candidate is, I bet he has some swamp land or snake oil for sale...

Let's see...you want the Liberals to solve the health care crisis. Hmm, like they've done for Ontario with our health tax and eHealth scandal? No thanks.

At last check the Liberals are out-polling the Conservatives in all regions except the prairies. In fact, the Conservatives are edging towards single digits in Quebec.

If we have an election the change in parliament will be minimal with a few seats swinging back to the Liberals. Unlikely to be enough for anywhere near a majority. However I can see why the Liberals would want to

The trouble is that I have a good memory and feel that voting has turned into the lesser of two evils and deciding between “Tweedle-Dee and “Tweedle-Dumb.” I have a good memory and remember Mulroney, and fresh in my mind is the “Liberal Sponsorship Scandal.” As well, since I originally lived in B.C. I remember well what the NDP did to that province and the economy. I truly don’t know who to vote for, but I am sick of voting every year (it seems), knowing that all I am deciding is whose turn it is to pony up to the public trough. We all know that these politicians have no interest in the common or public good and are simply interested in what they can take from the taxpayer. The trouble with the liberal scandal is that they got caught, all of the parties do the same thing, they just don’t get caught. These parties are fast becoming street-gangs fighting it out for control of the lucrative drug trade. Power seems to shift back and forth almost as fast. I will vote, but I am not impressed by any of my choices as I feel the entire parliamentary system is showing its age and needs to be replaced and quick.

Isn't it always the case when a government holds a minority, that they depend on the opposition to help keep them afloat. Mr. Ignatieff believes in bigger taxes, bigger government which will equal more debt.

I don't think that the Liberals would have fared much better have they had been in power during the course of this recession.

I think tht Harper (being an economist) was very prudent in what he did. Sure, he didn't say right away that Canada was in the midsts of an economic downturn, because he did not want to create more panic that was pulling down the markets. Instead, he kept a cool head and read the charts correctly, thus Canada was spared the worst of the recession.

I'm sure that Iggy has some good idea's and could be a pretty good leader, but not as Prime Minster.

I want a leader who is connected with Canadians and who has been in the country living through the good times and the bad and Iggy certainly was not here at that time.

The other candidates are just way to left and are not good for the country. Mr. Layton believes he would be the man for the job, but I don't think he represents Canadians or what this nation is all about.

and as for the Green Party, well I don't think it's such a great idea having a bunch of former hippies running the show.

So, that leaves us with Harper and if Iggy does force this government to fall and cause another election, I believe that we will be right back to where we start from and that's with another Conservative minority government.

Well,Mr.Ignatief,if you think we need another election so soon,I respectfully have to disagree. In this Liberal riding, not only will I promise to vote Conservative,I'll go down and donate to,and work for their party. This power struggle that brings un an election every year or two has got to stop.
In a time of economic turmoil I don't see how any responsible person can think that having a very expensive election every year can be a good use of a very finite numers of resources.I urge ALL Canadians, especially those of us who live in the west,to severely punish every Liberal who takes part in forcing us back to the polls. We have plenty of good reasons not to return to the days of being a colony to Ontario.Even if you don't care for Mr.Harper,I genuinely believe you will hate another Liberal term.A term that will see higher taxes, more debt for ur children,no support for our military,no interest in our Arctic claim,no reform of our injustice system,no rules for refugees and immigration, people working for a few weeks and spending the rest of the year living off your tax dollars, and obviously no interest in Senate reform of any kind.
WHile I agree that Harper has made minimal progress on getting these things in motion,I think his minority status, and the current global economy, give him some reasonable reasons for slow progress. But these are things he believes in,and I think Liberals should also believe in.I think most Canadians want most of those things too.Whether Harper can deliver or not, remains to be seen. But there is NO CHANCE we will see real improvements if we elect a Liberal government that doesn't even consider those issues as important goals worthy of moving forward with.
No more "NDP Lite",please. Not at this time.

The only change we need is a change in the system. The British Parliamentary system does not work and is costing Canadians millions in unnecessary elections. Now is the time to begin discussing a change in political formats. A fixed, non-challengeable four year mandate similiar to the U.S. would stop this constant threat of non-confidence votes and elections. Our politicians have parliamentary and constitutional experts on taxpayer paid retainers that show parties' where to exploit the systems weaknesses to maintain or acheive power. Only by changing the system will Canadians be able to take the power out of the hands of politicans. This election, when it comes, send a message to Ottawa: We don't need an election, we cannot afford an election and we are protesting by staying home and not voting. It is time to stand up and take back our country.

The only weapon Iggy has in his arsenal, it seems, is manipulation. He is trying to steer the country in his direction by threats all the time. If he had any political savvy he'd know nobody is interested in yet another election. This is not Switzerland where you have to go to the polls to give your meaning on every little thing that comes up. We have elected leaders who take care of matters. What Iggy should do is spend some time to learn the business of an effective opposition and focus on it.

I am sorry that you have lost your job, and that your kids have health issues, but don't blame the Tories for that. The Liberals were in power for many years before the Tories(which have just been in since 2006)and didn't address any of the issues that you are worried about. The Liberals have been known over the years to promise anyone everything that they want, and to break those promises once in power.

We welcome you to Canada, but I sincerely hope that you won't be taken in by Liberal promises and give the Tories a chance to do things better for Canadians. After all they have been in a minority Government and have been stalled on many issues by the opposition.

We wouldn't have had this election talk in the first place had Ignatieff stuck with the original plan to pursue a coalition government with the NDP and Bloc Quebecois!

Sure, there was intense backlash against the idea, but it was because most Canadians do not understand the political system! We elect MP's, NOT the prime minister, and those MP's would not be going anywhere if the coalition did go through. The coalition was initially proposed because Harper refused to work with the opposition (as is required in a minority government in order to make parliament work) and it would have been irresponsible to send Canadians to the polls for the second time in as many months.

Coalition governments worked in many other countries, so why not Canada?

@Mark

Mark, do you mind if I correct you on one point? Speaking of Mr. Ignatieff's claim to bring better government, you write:

"Oh yeah Michael? Better than a coalition with the NDP and the Bloc..."

Actually Mark the coalition did not include the Bloc. The Liberals and NDP were going to form the Cabinet, and the Bloc agreed not to vote against the new government on any matters of confidence.

Mr. Harper, however, misled the country by claiming that the Bloc were going to be part of the government, and that set the alarm bells ringing for many people. This has created the myth that the Bloc would be in Cabinet, a myth that persists to this day.

Another myth is that Mr. Harper was trying to steer the country though an economic crisis while the Liberals were trying to pull it down.

The facts do not support that interpretation, however. The NDP and the Liberals warned, during the election, that a recession was coming. This had become evident to economists around the world who were familiar with the mortgage situation in the States.

But the NDP and Liberals were accused of "fear-mongering," and Mr. Harper said there would be no recession. When it occurred, he refused to table a budget recognizing the economic downturn, and that's why the coalition was formed.

Thankfully, the threat of losing power forced Mr. Harper to re-think his proposed budget- whether for good or ill, we don't know. Perhaps we'll recover without the stimulus, if the States improves first. But that's why Mr. Ignatieff keeps saying he'll hold the government on a leash- because those are his ideas that are being implemented.

But it is absurd to argue that the stimulus package was Mr. Harper's idea. It was forced on him by the threat of coalition.

Until the political parties can get it into their heads that they are supposed to represent the people of Canada, we will have more of the same every election.

Mr. Ignatieff's "new blood" gave the liberals a chance to change. Instead he just accepted the liberal "entitlement" role lock stock and barrel.

They way this country is being run is getting more and more like the so-called banana republics canadians laughed at a decade or so ago. All we need now is a coup just to complete Canada's transformation from a credible nation to a laughing stock.

While I concede it's nice to have a PM,that I like,I still find it odd that so many people find a need to vote for someone they like.Is that a Liberal thing,is it a widespread practise? Or is it just Liberal Party "spin"? The notion thay you can make yourself look better if you can get everyone to hate the other guy.
This is serious stuff,my friends.Another election at a cost of more than $300 million dollars?? You have got to be kidding me.How responsible can that be? Is it really in the best interests of Canadians? I can't believe it is.
I've been a Liberal for most of my past. While I voted for the Conservatives during the last two elections,I always thought the Liberals would return to support that party. It now appears that is NOT GOING TO HAPPEN any time soon.It now seems evident that, before you can build new,you have to tear down the old.We likely have to do to the same to the Liberals as we did to the PC Party. Not a pleasant time for voters, who have to live trough a period of a one party system.Just like the days when Chretien got a free ride to power because the PC's split, and the BLOC was formed.
This IS NOT the Liberal party I was once proud to be a member of.They're to stupid to use their time in opposition to refresh their party with policies we can vote "for".All they have put out is spite and hatred that they hope will convince us to vote "against" the current government. While I had hoped to keep Conservatives in a minority situation,I now believe Liberals have given voters no choice but to give Mr.Harper his majority. That is the ONLY way we can stop this nonsense.Make them PAY.

The only times a quick election (i.e less than a year after the previous one) forced by the opposition has worked were 1963 & 1979 (forget the oddity that was the 1926 dissolution). But in 1963 that was after 1) 6 years of PC rule, 2) the PCs had been cut down to minority status from majority the year before, and 3) the PC cabinet was at open war with itself. In 1979 you had a bumbling PM (Clark) from Alberta, with a separation referendum on the horizon (naturally favouring Trudeau), plus the Libs had actually won more votes (40%) than the PCs (36%) in the ’79 election. There is no similar situation here. Harper has only had 3.5 years in power (so not even a full standard term yet), they are still on an upward arc (their vote has grown in every election starting with 2004), the cabinet is united and the PM is in full control.

The situation that comes to mind is Peterson 1990 … the Libs will be shocked by the blowback.

Once again Michael Ignatieff spouting that he will bring down the Government when he sees fit, when in fact he cannot do it alone. He will need the help of the NDP & the Bloc, which will mean many concessions to both parties. There may not be a signed coalition, but I'm sure that there will be behind closed door deals for Jack Layton & Gilles Duceppe.

Michael has a very deep desire to be PM and would not want the economy to turn around while the Conservatives are in power, even though their steady approach in dealing with it has been effective.

Now is not the time to "rock the boat" and I hope that if the Liberals do manage to force an election( with the NDP & Bloc in their back pockets)that they will be severely reprimanded by the voters.

One thing I find amazing is how the focus is on "bringing down the government" and what the "party line" is going to be. Clearly, the Liberals are not focused on actually governing, but rather obtaining power. They aren't the only Party guilty of this misplaced sense of purpose, but lately are the most obvious.

The thing I fear most is that if the Liberals actually get their way and "bring down the government" it will be like the car chasing dog that finally caught the car - now what??

I don’t know what Ignatieff is thinking. Truly I just think he’s grown tired of Canadian politics, and just wants it all over with. Maybe he’s under some grand delusion that he need merely speak, and the departed will all flock back. If he is, he should wake up and smell the coffee quick. I never thought I’d say this, but I now can envision the Liberals under Ignatieff registering a worse result (both popular vote and seat totals) than Dion did last year! He will be the only untested leader in any campaign, and all the Bloc’s guns will be pointing at him in Quebec, and their Quebec lieutenant (Denis Coderre) is just an abrasive personality that he alone will drive people away.

Instead of an election about changing the government, any election now would be whether to grant the Conservatives a majority or not, and the Conservatives will be running under that banner, saying that it’s either them or The Coalition. It’s a great angle for them, and the Liberals lose every which way under it. As some reporter said, Iggy is 62, and he’s only going to get one shot (it’s a dumb policy, but it’s likely the one Liberals will take).

Iggy is playing right into Stephen Harper's tactical hands. Iggy and Iggy alone will be responsible for bringing down this gov't and he will be held accountable by the voters. His poll #s are sliding and he's desperate for an election. If you look close at the Liberal caucus meeting held in Sudbury, as I write this, you'll see the cracks in the grit fortress already over this early election issue. Also the media covered more of the protesters and there "sit down" dinner then they did of that caucus meeting/fund raiser. Not a very good leaf to start the new session out on for the libs. The last thing this country needs is another election when the confidence in our economy is just now slowly returning. A huge distraction like an election could very well send our fragile economy into another tailspin, and might I add, it would all be at the feet of the liberals if the gov't was brought down at this time. I for one feel that if there is no way to avoid going to the polls then bring it on and we can dispose of Iggy and his clown show and give Stephen Harper his majority he so richly deserves. Gawd knows, he's earned it...

Iggy is only trying to poise his party to not be seen as the party that keeps the Tories in Power. Wylie Jack layton was able to paint the liberals as the Tory supporters last election and it hurt the Libs.

The polls show the Bloc in trouble and the NDP bleeeding votes to Liberals. Neither the Bloc or NDP want an election right now because they will loose seats.

All iggy is doing is blustering to poise his party as the alternative to the Tories. Thus forcing the NDP or Bloc to support the Tories in Parliment. Or else there will be an election which the Bloc and NDP do not want.

The image of the bloc or NDP supporting the Tories would be gold for the liberals and a disaster for the Tories as well as the NDP or Bloc.

Reality is the other 3 parties are only interested in ONE thing. Power..... and they will do anything to get it.

Sadly i thought it was about the good of the country, not the good of the Liberal Party.

My fellow Canadians:

Until we get a system that elects people who focus on their job to govern the country instead of being in power, we will continue to be systemically tyrannized, especially when politicians, the public and the media have lost the faith and practice in electing someone based on merit instead of image in the media.

I don't know the source of this quote, possibly Mark Twain, but "politics is the illegitimate son of a righteous father called statesmanship".

If the politions want to really show they are doing everything they can to help out the Canadian citizens maybe they should take some of they HUGE salary and give it to charities or just plain take a pay cut, maybe even pay for their own housing. That would save some money~

I find it hard to believe that any party is truly in it for our economy's sake when they can't take that extra step and not live in an excessive luxury while people are loosing their homes

Unneeded advertising, name calling, elections. I think it was time that the governing parties all grew up and showed up they are a part of Canada.

And what exactly will Ignatieff' s platform be based on, dropping the EI down to 360 hours?

I am not suggesting that is the answer, but Harper is tall on persoanl agendas and the conservatives are nothing but a white wash Reform party, with no solid policies themselves. Some of the best policies in Canadian gov. came from minority gov.(Medicade). A minority gov. has the responsibility to work with the opposition to form solid, concrete policies that will help the country. Not the "its my way or the highway Harper". people seem to forget whom pulled the last election to get a majority, HARPER, talk about a waste of our money. Time for them to go!

Having an election for no good, hard reason is frankly irresponsible. Even as a conservative supporter, I’ll admit that the current government is not perfect. Needless to say however, having a minority government in a recession would be a challenge to any political party in power. The problem is, change is only a good idea if you’re getting something better in return. I just don’t think that most Canadians feel that the Liberals could do any better. They have not brought anything to the table to convince us otherwise. Even the EI debate doesn’t seem to have much support by most. It seems there is absolutely no motive for an election other than to gain power. Putting the government on hold for months now would hurt this country at a crucial time in history and would be another giant waste of tax dollars. If a coalition with the bloc is still on the minds of the Liberal party…I’ll take the Conservatives thank you.

I don't think risking this country's economic, political, social and perhaps constitutional health is EVER old.

Perhaps the Liberals who would rather just forget about their legacy of tax and spend, vote-buying, obscene patronage and so forth like to use excuses such as 'isn't that old'?

Yes, there were some scandals, but my life was good as was the Government. The conservatives came to power and they proceeded to cut the GST a couple of points which took billions out of the treasury but didn't really provide much tax relief. Jobs are scarce, the deficit is back and in record territory, and the only way taxes will have to go now is up. All economists warned that the GST cut was extremely ill-conceived and would wipe out years of surpluses while providing no tax relief or economic stimulus. Harper has broken most of his promises - senate reform, income trusts, trasparent govn't, Arctic ice breakers, etc.

And he did not "save" Canada from recession - it was the Liberal banking and financial policies that did this. Harper pushed for US-style banking de-regulation when he was in Opposition. Where would we be now if he was successful?

As far as I can tell this is Harper's "legacy" to date:

1) Harper's "transparent" govn't - most secretive govn't in history.

2) Senate reform - Harper continues to appoint CPC campaign managers and other cronies claiming that once they have “cash for life” will give this up, loose their jobs so Harper can reform the Senate – never happen. Harper has not pushed this with the provinces or other parties. Senate reform, if he was serious about it, could get Harper hs Majority (also never happen).

3) Making Parliament work for Canadians - every vote is a confidence vote - until Harper gets called on it last Dec and hides under the GGs skirt.

4) Environment / climate change - Baird did do a great job representing the oil industry at int'l meeting on climate change - all else from this govn't has been fluff.

5) Sound govn't fiscal management of tax dollars - record spending, record deficit; every economist says the GST cut was a waste. And Harper continues to blow money he doesn't have almost daily!

6) Arctic sovereignty - where's the ice breakers and the deep sea port? But we did get a snazzy new homepage! I bet that will show those pesky Danes and Russians who's boss!

7) A-stan - A war Canadians don't want that is getting so expensive the Harper govn't won't release the costs (remember that thing about "transparency?")

8) Election In-and-Out scam - the CPC did everything it could to derail a Cabinet Committee on this, including writing a "how to" book on disrupting committees and of course, calling an election before they were actually found guilty.

9) Merit based appointments to Committees – Harper has stacked all committees with CPC cronies and losers, including filling scientific committees with CPC fundraisers and far-right Christians.

Hello folks,

I think that I always suspected it, but it is very clear to me now this AM that the CTV posters are in fact very top-heavy with Conservative supporters.

The question of the day is: Who would you vote for ?
61% Conservative versus only 26% Liberal

An article yesterday has pro-Conservative thumbs ups at an astounding approximate 750 to 120

Given that the opinion polls have the Liberals & the Conservatives almost tied in polular support, I guess the only real reason to even read these posts on CTV is to be able to read what fanatic Conservative supporters think (assuming that they can think)

Not much incentive to bother to post in future as this is not a balanced forum or exchange of ideas, but rather just a Conservative propaganda tool as I always suspected.

errr, life support? What's with the bluster? First Harper is on 'probation' and now he's on 'life support'? I wouldn't call folding at every single opportunity to defeat the government a form of 'life support'. Remember those demands back at the start of summer that Ignatieff said would determine whether or not the government survived? He folded on every. Single. One.

It wouldn't bother me so much were it not such a pathetic joke. Let the government do it's job and stop threatening an election that Canadians don't want, just as we are seeing some economic recovery.

Maybe its time for an election. We have seen Iggy perform as a not-so-loyal leader of Her Majesty's Loyal Opposition by applying extortion tactics every time he feels the need for press coverage. The repeated threats of forcing an election are wearing more than a little thin. Watching him perform in an election campaign while he promises to stimulate our economy through a carbon tax, cap and trade or whatever new euphemism they can come up with will be very interesting. So will his objections to fixing a totally broken immigration process, effective health care reforms and rebuilding our armed forces. He'll probably also wheel out old Jean Chretien to remind us of the days of Liberal excesses, scandals and corruption. Yes Iggy, its time to put yourself out there to be dissected, analysed and exposed for your true self. Go ahead, force an election and make our day.

The reason why Iggy wants an election immediately is so he can determine his future. If he wins, he will stay in Canada. If he loses, he'll return to "his country", - the USA. He doesn't want to waste any more time than necessary staying in Canada.

I find it interesting how Mr. Ignatieff can speak about how the Tory government has let Canada down, when I haven't heard him speak a word about how he'd do things differently.

Let's be honest here. All his trumping around saying how HE has kept the conservatives in power and how HE is unhappy with the handling of stimulus money. Come on! He's trying to bolster his position because the entire Liberal party has no substance to base an election on.

First off, he doesn't have the stones to bring down a government within a year of the previous election, especially since his party is still in disgrace from nearly making a deal with the devil... I mean the Bloc. Second, it would probably be a good idea for him to figure out his own party platform and resolutions to issues before declaring himself the saviour of a Canada that doesn't need to be saved.

Finally, lets take a logical look at the way an election would turn out if Mr.Ignatieff was to bring down the government. The way polls are looking, no one cares for the NDP because Jack Layton is a fool, resulting in little to no one voting for them as has been the norm for the NDP in national politics, the Conservatives and Liberals battling it out with the Tories still on top. The results would clearly be another minority government for the Tories AGAIN or FINALLY a majority for the Tories. Stephen Harper has probably done more with 2 minority governments than the liberals were able to accomplish in their 12 year reign under Chretien and Martin. So I ask you, does CANADA really want another election with the exact same outcome as the last 2?

ANY EXCUSE WILL DO

It's no secret to anyone following Canadian politics, regardless of their partisan stripe, that Michael Ignatieff's entire reason for being is to become Prime Minister. The man's desperate quest is based upon his own righteous destiny.

Never was it, nor will it ever be, about CANADA and it's direction. It's all about Iggy, and a selfish "achievement" he has fantasized about during his long existence as a Canadian entirely content to reside outside of his own country.

Watching Mr. Ignatieff and his Liberals struggle to muster up a reason to trigger an election is hilarious; as any "reason" will amount to merely an excuse. He NEEDS to be Prime Minister, and any excuse to run will do.

-------------

Standing in continual partisan criticism of the present government, as leader of the Opposition, is any easy task in politics. You can always find something to gripe and pander to the masses about.

Having a tangible vision and a concrete platform of workable detailed ideas, and being able to LEAD a nation, is far tougher. As it stands, Mr. Ignatieff is shooting blanks and simply reinforcing the notion that Liberals are hollow electioneers.

It's blantantly obvious that the comments here do not reflect public sentiment. There is no way so many, on the same day at roughly the same time could come up with basically the same comment just couched in different verbage. It's sad that the conservative war room is finally back to work after their Summer recess with their comical attempt to manipulate and deceive the Canadian public. They are of very low character and are doing the same thing on other news "comment boards" if CTV could only indentify them and stop them from trying to steer public opinion this board would be a much more valuable form.

Yes we need a change in government, but Ignatieff and the Liberals are not the ones to get this country back on track. Ignatieff has too many personal agendas and the Liberals have no better track record than the Conservatives. It's time for a real change! NDP! The last thing Canada needs is a majority Liberal government with Ignatieff in front. Every level of government in this country has scandal after scandal and are so busy trying to justify, plan for recovery, deflect the proper resposibility, or other inappropriate action that nothing really moves forward. If we ever get a good government with a leader that has the right know how, it will take at least a decade to recover from the damage left by the Liberal and Conservative history.

Although I have supported the NDP as my parents did, I would vote Liberal to get rid of Harper and the conservatives whom seem to govern as if they have a majority and do not hold themselves accountable nor listen to the people whom gave them 2 consecutive minority governments. This was to hold them accountable but Harper holds the other parties in contempt and does what he wishes. Some of the recent bills(C-15) are trying to align themselves with the failed criminal code policies of the US. Supermax prisons, privatized and patronized to conservative backers will only give us a failed system as it is in the states.Mandatory sentences take the whole democratic practice out of the judges hands, based on the circumstances, and give them no discretionary power what so ever. What is next the 3 strikes rule.

Ignoring Canadians in trouble in 3rd world countries jails. Canada use to hold it head high and was held in high regard by other countries with our judicial system, now we are going to go with a US system? The numbers and the US's failed justice system we cannot afford, nor can we afford the effects it would have on our way of life and our pocket books.

As far as fiscal policy telling Canadians the recession is over, everything is OK and we are in the best shape of all the G8 countries, he is talking out of the side of his mouth. I work in the mortgage industry and keep a good pulse on what our economy is doing. We are far from OK and although some of the leading indicators may look like they are coming back you cannot ignore the EI problems and what I foresee as one of the worst periods to come(this winter). With EI running out, people living on credit, Bankruptcy up 51% in June compared to last year, companies reluctant to rehire in wholesale fashion in case of another hiccup in the economy, and also now with a WORLD economy we are not isolated and are at the mercy of what is happening everywhere in the world.

It is time Mr. Ignatieff comes out full force this fall, makes Canadians aware of the arrogance of Harper and the conservative party and their policies, and pull the plug and call an election. Although most of us are tired of the recent spat of elections, Harper has shown his arrogance and I am sure their are many others whom would be persuaded to vote Liberal in order to put to an end this type of majority thinking type of politics going on right now. I know quite a few others that feel this way as well and you need to ramp up the attacks on Harper(Conservatives) and make Canadians aware of this arrogance. You will get my vote and I believe a lot of others. Good Luck.

A Proud Canadian

I love the smell of conservative fear in the morning.
We have roadrobber telling us Ignatieff is for and agains't things, what they are Roadrobber didn't say. And i love Roadrobber's paranoia about Ignatieff hiding something. Maybe its some real stimulus money.
Mark, isnt crying about coalition getting a little old? Don't you remember Harper with his nose up the Bloc's party?
There is going to be an election and this time will be Harper's last kick at the can. He has to form a majority or hit the road.

Please do knock it off. We do NOT need an election this fall, we are all busy trying to survive, I could not care less about political posturing and empty election promises at this time. One party is no different than another, and there is not one leader that stands out above the others. So, please leave Canadians to focus on our struggles to get back on our feet.

I believe that if the Liberals cause the government to fall at this time they will pay dearly for it. Canadians are sick of elections and are sick of minority governments who have their hands tied in trying to accomplish anything. Let the Tories rule for their four years and then decide on their performance. Stephen Harper may be "unexciting", but he is doing a good job. If the Liberals use the EI card they will get their wings clipped on that issue as well. This country has to get to work, not depend on Liberal handouts that create low GDP ratings.

I am so disappointed in our politicians, it's all about getting power not making this country better. Every year we slide farther away from what made this country great. These people are not here to lead us to a better place, just to line their pockets and their friends pockets with our hard earned cash and leave the place in ruins. It doesn't matter who is in power anymore, we always end up in the same place. Is this a democracy when the best choice is no choice at all.

A lot of you are talking about individual party members. I think it's time you have a look at party platforms? Ever read them? Every election I read them all. Once you see the entire platform for a party then you can really judge what they're about, moreso once they've followed through, attempted to or completely strayed from said platform.

If we go to a election people lets make sure we send a strong message to the Liberals that we do not support such childs play.

The panic is on now. With the banks stating the recession may be almost over, especially for Canada.

We certainly see the Harper bashers trying to substantiate removing him from the office of Prime Minister.

After all, if PM Harper remains until the recession is over then the Liberals, NDP and BLOC cannot claim any victory in assisting Canada out of this recession.

The only claim to fame the Liberals, NDP and BLOC will receive is that they drove our country into deeper debt by insiting that PM Harper bury us deep in the red to avoid a coalition take over. Imagine now how bad that would have been with the 3 amigos at the helm.

I'm debating as to the benefit of a fall election. Come November, thousands of eligible voting seniors (and some not so senior) head south with the birds. Not knowing what the experts have found in their multitude of polls, what party does the majority of this group support? Is the call for a fall election in Ignatieff's favour with those votes out of the way? Yes, I'm aware you can early vote, mail in votes and other avenues but there are many who are not. Just a thought.....

So Ignatieff spends the summer at tea parties in Europe, his party basically takes a summer break, and he comes back and thinks he can force an election down Canadian throats.

Harper mean while spends the summer, working to turn our economy around, talking to Canadians and addressing Canadian issues like our arctic sovereignty.

The Cons helped our economy weather one of the worst economics downturns since the Great Depression, with a lot less impact than many other countries. They have cut taxes and insured Canadians have more money in their own pockets. They have expanded our armed forces.

The Liberals have blocked the Cons attempt to reform the Senate. Blocked a critical crime bill which would see criminals actually pay for the crimes they commit. Their leader would rather be an American or a Brit than a Canadian.

Fine lets have an election, so when they lose they can send Ignatieff back to Europe for more tea parties.

Any money spent on advertising/campaigning is SO wasted. Everybody already knows the issues, and already know what they want. Its just not there in our current government in any way. We are SO bored with the usual same-old useless promises from overpaid children. The campaigning itself turns people OFF of politics. Spend the money on some needs social services instead. And remember, every dollar spent/wasted on war is one less dollar spent on peaceful social services and realistic development.

Economic stimulus is only threatened because money for infrastructure projects that could have been rolling by late 2008 (had they acknowledged there was a recession) is still not rolling.

Ughhh.... Why can't the liberals just admit they have no reason to call an election.

I'm proud of what Harper and his government have done.

The only reason why the conservatives don't have a majority right now is because of the elderly people who voted liberal their entire life... even if a chicken was their leader...

I'm tired of these '' let's make sure the old ways never change'' people...

anyways I'm just rambling... if their are elections, please make sure to vote conservative...

Cheers!

Big talk for a man who has absolutely no idea what to do to help the economy, other than put us into debt even more with a ridiculous EI plan. Good news is, he'll hack and slash the military to save cash, just like Martin and Cretien and Trudeau did.

I'd rather let an economist help us weather the world recession, Harper seems like he has a practical background in something other than making random media statements like old Iggy.

"Look the Conservatives are a bad government, Canadians desereve better and we can deliver better".

Oh really Michael? Better government like a coalition with the NDP and the Bloc? Like paper bags full of cash as is the Liberal legacy? Like how YOU supported the Iraq war? Like a proposed and entirely un-tested carbon tax credit just before the biggest economic crisis of our generation?

That kind 'better'?

Mr. Ignatieff reminds me of the little boy that called Wolf-he threatens an election everytime he senses no one is paying attention to him. By the way Michael, where have you been all summer? When you have something substantive to offer I may pay attention, but the biggest thing you've had to offer is a mediocre and largely irrelevant unemployment eligibility issue. Surely you can come up with something real.

I'm sick of all of these political parties, they really don't care about anything but getting and maintaning power. I think the conservatives have been doing OK, every bit as good as the liberals have done. So why would we want to go back to the polls and vote? This is madness and it's time to put a stop to it. If they want an election let's make damm sure the new government gets a majority and I'll be voting for the conservatives.

I think an election will come soon. But...I'm at odds here. I hope to see that ignatieff is a brilliant man, but i havent been impressed by anything as of yet. More concerned than anything.

That said I dont have a fondness for the conservative leader at this point either. What i would like to see is something from both leaders as to why we should support them, and not why we shouldnt like the other party (stop the attacking). Give me a reason to follow, open to either parties. If you cant, enjoy your 55% voter turn out, 10% green party support and minority governments.
