Liberal Leader Michael Ignatieff says he will no longer support Stephen Harper's minority government.
In a speech Tuesday to the Liberal caucus, Ignatieff said Harper's time as prime minister, "is over."
"I cannot support this government any further," Ignatieff said to cheers and wild applause, following a meeting with his Liberal caucus, which is on retreat in Sudbury, Ont.
"We will hold Stephen Harper to account and we will oppose his government in Parliament."
Sources have told CTV News that the Liberals will put forward a non-confidence motion to force an election this fall -- although they need the support of the NDP and the Bloc Quebecois for that to happen.
Speaking in Calgary, Harper said Canadians selected their government when they went to the polls less than a year ago and aren't keen for yet another election.
"I haven't met a single Canadian who is saying they want to see an election right now. I just don't find that," Harper said.
"I think Canadians have been pretty clear. They want Parliament to focus on the economy."
NDP MP Thomas Mulcair agreed with the prime minister, saying "we'd better have a bloody good reason for forcing a fourth general election in five years.
"So if Mr. Harper goes about being provocative as he has been in the past, going after key things that Canadians hold dearly like women's rights and the environment, then we'll throw him out of office because he'll have provoked it," Mulcair said.
"If, on the other hand, Stephen Harper comes into Parliament with a willingness to work in the public interest, then we're going to take it on a case-by-case basis."
Mulcair's cautious words stood in stark contrast to Ignatieff's fiery, campaign-style speech, during which he attacked Harper's record on the economy and other issues.
"Mr. Harper, you have failed all four tests," Ignatieff said. "You've failed to protect the most vulnerable. You've failed to create jobs. You've failed to defend our health care. You've failed to produce a plan to restore our public finances."
Ignatieff said his party "can do better" at managing the economic crisis, protecting Canadians abroad and making the country competitive.
"Stephen Harper doesn't get it," Ignatieff said. "He doesn't get that Canada's in a race -- that we've got to position our country to compete in the 21st century. We've got to make Canada a world leader again -- and we've got to do it now."
Possible September showdown
CTV's Graham Richardson said the Liberals could move to topple the government by putting forward a non-confidence motion on a previously agreed upon opposition day at the end of September.
However, a vote on the ways and means portion of the budget is scheduled for one of the first days after Parliament resumes on Sept. 14, Richardson said, which means the opposition could bring down the government at that time.
"We're talking about timing, and when in fact it's going to happen this fall as opposed to if it's going to happen this fall," Richardson told CTV News Channel.
When Parliament went on summer break, the break down of seats was:
- 143 for the Conservatives
- 77 for the Liberals
- 36 for the New Democrats
- 48 for the Bloc Quebecois
On Tuesday afternoon, Transport Minister John Baird dismissed questions about working with the NDP, saying that the opposition party hasn't shown "any desire or willingness to work with the government" in the past.
"I think it is most regrettable that we're seeing this kind of political bravado from Michael Ignatieff and the Liberals," Baird said.
Earlier Tuesday, Liberal finance critic John McCallum said that his party isn't satisfied with the Conservative government's management of the economic crisis, saying the Tories were too slow at getting fiscal stimulus money out the door this summer.
"Well I certainly think a strong case can be made for a change in government on grounds of economic mismanagement because yesterday's growth numbers showed that, far from leading the G7 out of recession, Canada was dead last in its economic performance in the second quarter," McCallum told Smith.
'Political brinkmanship'
According to pollster Nick Nanos, Ignatieff and Harper are locked in a game of "political brinkmanship."
Though the leaders have faced-off on political issues before, Nanos said it will be difficult for Ignatieff to stand down this time for fear of appearing weak in the eyes of voters.
Nanos added that the Tories hammered Stephane Dion, Ignatieff's predecessor, with similar accusations during last year's election.
"I don't think (Ignatieff) can turn back, because if he does, the comparisons with Stephane Dion will pop up -- they already have -- in a New York minute," he said.
Still, Nanos said the outcome of a potential campaign will depend on how the parties pick their battles.
"Any kind of election about the economy will naturally favour the Conservatives, because that's part of their core brand strength," Nanos told CTV News Channel Tuesday evening.
He added that the Liberals will benefit from issues like healthcare and national unity, the former which appears to be a growing issue with Canadians once again.

If these comments and the reviews that they are getting are any indication the majority out there feel the same way that I do. Stop this foolishness get on with the business of tending to the real issues out there, the economy, health care, the environment. Enough of this ego-bolstering garbage Mr Ignatieff, there are more important issues at hand. If you carry through with this I believe it will mean the downfall of the Liberal Party and you will be to blame. I have been a Liberal Supporter my entire life and if you do this I will never again vote Liberal, my vote will be Conservative on sheer principle alone and many other Canadians will do the same. We need someone in office that is there for the good of the country and you are not that person and your actions in calling an election will prove just that. Someone that is willing to waste valuable time and money on an election that is not needed or wanted does not have the best intentions of this country at hand.
I say right here and now that if a fall election happens there is absolutely no question, my vote will be Conservative as Mr Harper is obviously the only one with his head and heart in the right place and that is for the good of this great country.

- though still a minority, Conservative seats actually went up in the last election over the previous one
- Conservatives came within 10 seats of winning a majority in the last election; there were more than 10 ridings where the opposition merely squeeked in and these could easily go the other way
- Conservatives are pulling similar numbers of seats as Chretien did during his third election. Chretien only got a majority because conservative votes were split. As long as BQ remains a factor, majority wins by either party are unlikely
- Conservative polling numbers show that they now have the momentum (which the Liberals squandered by their relative silence all summer)
- Bloc support is up in Quebec; Liberals can't count on gains in Quebec
- Liberal support is practically none-existent in western Canada; that's not likely to change
Here's the final one that might be hardest to swallow for Liberal fans: CTV is hardly "Fox News North". Maybe the views expressed here actually reflect ordinary Canadians and maybe, just maybe, they're relatively pleased with Harper's governance over the last 3 1/2 years, the way he's handled the economy, the fact we're paying less tax...
OOOH! Wouldn't THAT be a bitter truth to swallow?

There are a couple of major benefits to this.
1 All pollsters would be out of business.(Ahhh...sweet thought.)
2 We could go back to the stone age and start all over again.
The entertainment would be priceless.

I can find no logical reason for bringing down the Conservative Government at the present time. The way they handled Canadian affairs and fought for Canadian interest has been within acceptable reason - no serious faults can be drawn from their actions - no matter how the Liberals try to paint the truth with false colours.
I used to vote for Liberals but their actions in many areas, such as cutting money to military, various scandals, and obvious bias to Quebec and Ontario, has left a very bitter taste in my mouth. And when they try to pull a stunt like this - I, as a Canadian citizen, does not appreciate it.

1-- get paid to comment
2-- are ignorant
3-- have no idea about anything.
think again.
I for one do not get paid and the Conservatives do not even know that I support them.I am just someone who can think for herself, and have lived through the many years of Liberal rule, and yes, even voted for them at times. My eyes were finally opened to all the Liberal lies and scandals. Now I feel that the Conservatives & PM Harper are the right ones for the job, but somehow to a Liberal that makes me evil.I have noticed that the Liberal supporters on these boards are very hateful and use very nasty comments about anyone that supports the CDonservatives. Why is that???

143 for the Conservatives
77 for the Liberals
36 for the New Democrats
48 for the Bloc Quebecois
So the Liberals have half the seats of the PCs, the NDP a quarter as many and the Bloc a third... in a partiamentary democracy the PCs are mandated to govern - they have after all twice the seats of their nearest rival.
Since the NDP are a permanent protest party, the only way the government can be defeated is for the Liberals to partnership with the Bloc. That will make for interesting advertisements come election time.

Reading all the posts from Liberal crybabies complaining about the supposed overabundance of Conservative supporters in this forum has been a treat today.
My favorite comments, certainly, are those from “conspiracy theorists” convinced that the Conservative Party itself is working behind the scenes to dominate this open, public board operated by an independent news/media corporation.
Talk about paranoia. Really, you folks need a leather couch and a mental hygiene professional.

It never ceases to amuse me how Liberals, typically, can never get over the fact that EVERYBODY doesn't see the world just like they do...with their coke-bottle goggles on. They get so flustered and upset; and, of course, it’s mirthful to observe.

As a very famous comic line once said " I don't think so Tim".
So Mr. Ignatieff wants out... well then so be it and as another famous comic in the 1960's once said... " SAY GOOD NITE DICK"..(Dan Rowan to Dick Martin at the end of the show) on...The Laugh-in Show... How ironic!!!

For your information, the reason why McGuinty is going through with the HST is because of Flaherty.Notice how the other provinces are doing this? It is not just Ontario, it is also a Federal problem.
Meanwhile, the PC and the NDP leaders of Ontario have petitions going around for people to sign on to stop the HST.
The only way to stop the HST, is to stop it on the federal level where the problem started in the first place.
I am telling you this because you look like a fool for pointing it all on McGuinty.

He can do that this time by raising the spectre of a coalition as a kind of Cerberus (Three-headed monster) because less than a year ago the opposition parties formed one and it wasn't very popular.
This will force Ignatieff to distance himself from the opposition parties who will then retaliate and they'll be sniping at each other again.
But it is unlikely that Harper or Ignatieff or anyone else will win a majority government. The Bloc has removed Quebec from the playing field meaning that elections will be won mostly in Ontario and BC.
Harper is going to take some lumps and win fewer seats this time because he doesn't have a Liberal counterpart with a communication difficulty but at least he can try to keep the opposition parties from ganging up on him by playing the coalition card again.
One thing is likely: voter fatigue will result in a spectacularly low turnout with this being our fourth election in a little over five years.

I can't see another conservative govt coming to play when other countries are changing in a different direction.
Just look at Japan, and the USA, and other countries, that voted out Republicans, and Conservatives.
Canada will be standing alone with very little international relations with other countries. And we can only sell products to one another for so long and then you have to export. With a crappy foreign policy, and international trade agreement, then you wonder why the travel and tourism and manufacturing sectors are hurting.
It is all Common sense!

Since when does a man who abandoned Canada for thirty years to teach at Harvard have any say in how this country is run?
Um, since he came back to his country and became the Leader of the Official Opposition.
Look, I know a lot of Conservatives seem to have a lack of knowledge with how our system of parliamentary democracy works, but it’s been that way since the 1800s. Maybe you should read up on it, it’s called “Westminster Parliamentary Democracy”. Me, I learned about it in grade six.
Also, I don’t why you’re so upset that he spent time travelling the world and teaching at some of the best schools on the planet (Harvard, Oxford). Having a PM that’s intelligent and familiar with world issues really isn’t such a bad thing. I know it’s not what we’re used to, but don't be afraid - embrace it.

What the Liberals are trying to do is display a stronger hand and not allow the Bloc and especially the NDP to undermine them.
For 3+ years, the NDP have voted against the Conservatives at will knowing the Liberals would either weakly support the Govt or abdicate their responsibility. Dion was roasted over this policy time and time again. Ignatieff is basically calling out the NDP's bluff and forcing them to show there hand.

I found that refreshing, rather than the typical "we'll pull the switch" rhetoric we have been hearing from the politicians.
Sadly, the politicians have resumed their rhetoric, believing their job is to CAUSE an election.
Even more sadly, if the Liberals do force an election and muster a win, the Conservatives will deem it to be THEIR job to force an election so they can return to power.
The arrogance of it all astonishes me.

It is clear that he has no interest in the fact that the majority of Canadians do not want another election in the midst of a global financial recovery period. I am sure that the maritimes and the west will soon be forgotten in a Liberal Government as per normal practice.
Another point is why is Ralph Goodale not in the Liberal shadow cabinet? He was good enough to be a Minister of Finance in a former Liberasl Government. Why is he so invaluable now?
Keeping with former Liberal policies how much of the current and projected Department of National Defence spending will they cut if elected?
Stephen Harper and his government are doing a good job. The countries economy is rebounding in a world wide recession that the Liberals have blamed on the Conservatives. In the Liberal mindset it must only make sense to ride the wave of the improving fortunes for their own purposes.
Who trained you guys, Jack Layton? If grabbing headlines and non preformance would win awards the Liberals and the Federal NDP would win all of the awards.

This is not the time for an Election, just as we are emerging from the global recession thanks to the Conservatives. Tax paying Canadians are tiring of the thought of yet another Election and the cost of which will be shouldered by the tax payer. We pay enough taxes already and i don't think the Liberals have much to bring down the Conservatives and force an Election. I haven't heard one promise or idea from Mr. Ignatieff and believe he is doing whatever it takes to become Prime Minister when he cannot be trusted.

"If the liberals were in power my liberal candidate told me they would give everyone a job who is qualified."
Believe me, if the Liberals get back in power, they are not going on a job creation spree. If your local candidate told you that, well, it amounts to vote buying - and it is totally unrealistic to expect everyone will get a job who is qualified.
As for improving health care wait times. I agree, more must be done. However, the whole health care wait time issue grew from 12 years of Liberal power. They did nothing to adress the problem then, and will do nothing now.

BTW as much as I would like to blame the conservative gov't for the fact we are 'out of the recession', but still losing jobs: I can't!
Wake up people, the banks got us here and they will make sure we stay here. That is why they are making it easier for people, who can't afford loans, to get them easier than ever before.

If the amount of conservatives posting in this forum supprises you. Consider the following:
Could the polsters be biased? maybe the numbers shown on this site are a more accurate representation of canadian's views and values.
Could non-conservative not care enough to be involved in open discussion with people who share different views?
Or could it be that some people are so set in their ways that even if the truth slap's them in the faces they will lie to themselves to save their feelings?
or maybe... most non conservative's just cannot read! ;)

This is not some academic discussion forum for dreamy ideas and musings about taking power. This is our country and our economy and you are jeopardizing it with your careless meanderings. We have an economy that is slowly melting --- I don't care what the economists or the Head of the Bank of Canada are saying this week ---- and we need solid policy ideas and good government to get us through this. If you are going to take a stand then do it on a matter of prinicple after a public debate on one of YOUR ideas in Parliament after it is turned down. But stop the silly political games at such a critical time as this. I tell you Mr. Ignatieff, I used to be sympathetic to Liberals but now I am fully convinced I will NEVER vote Liberal again.

Sadly, the issue is Ignatieff wants to be PM. That's it; that's all. And, so, we are likely to have another acrimonious election, for no reason and with no different results.
Someone needs to save the LPC from itself, and I suspect it won't be a former NDP politician, or a Trudeau. They need an actual leader, an actual platform, and to accept that having governed for years does not give the automatic right to do so. In short, earn it.
As for the CPC, they will end up with another minority very likely, because right now there is no rational reason to change in the minds of most people. It's too bad, really, because with a majority we could compare the CPC to the LPC of past more directly. As it is, all we have is a struggling minority that has had to act within the confines of minority.

We are a democratic country with the second largest land mass in the world, yet 1/10 the population of our neighbours down south. I for one do not want a government that does not have our protection on it's mind. Liberals supporters don't like Harper because he plays hardball and is willing to say no to them. IF Iggy wants to go to the polls over EI reform, go for it, the majority of Canadians do not like a 10 week work eligablilty.
Iggy, if think you have the pulse of the nation on your mind, you must be must be telepathic becuase you've lived in the US for 3/4's of my life span. So tell us again how you think you "know" what we want?

A change of direction is almost always a difficult time for any nation. As a former supporter of the liberal party,I had reservations about a change to Conservatives. That is exactly why I totally enjoyed the results of the last vote.We got some change, but NOT a Harper majority. In my view, voters asked for a kind of a "test drive" of this new direction.Given that the Liberals became totally unfit to govern, this result seemed to be an almost perfect solution. Not for Liberal or Conservative loyalists, but for Canadian voters that actually think for themselves, and try to chose the party with the right policies.
Another election IS NOT in the best interests of anyone other than the politicians.Liberals who think they can win,or for Conservativs who want a majority government."We the people",get screwed over.
My fellow Canadian "Red X" is tempted to blame the Conservatives.I am more inclined to blame the opposition. When Ujjal Dosanjh proudly proclaimed "we will not co-operate with this government in any way",even as the results of the last election results were still being counted,I knew full well he meant it.And that truth has come home to roost.
And finally, while I seldom agree with you "Red X",I would welcome a beer and a debate on these issues, please. But it's a bit rude, condascending, and totally partisan to refer to me as "Dearest".Our different interpretations of events and politics is a poor excuse to dislike each other.Or is that just more Liberal "spin"??

It's time for Ignatief to fish or settle for cuting bait.

CTV today conducted a poll by

Who would you vote for in a

Conservatives 59%
Liberals 28%
NDP 7%
Others 6%
I ask you again Mr. Ignatieff who

So you think the 36% (yes 36%, not the 30% you claim) of the population who voted for the Conservatives have a low IQ. Same could be said for the 37% of 38% of voters that voted for the Liberals during the years they were winning their majorities.
Several polls in June showed that as many as 81% of Canadians don't want another election. You think Iggy will win if he forces an election nobody wants???

Where does the article say the Liberals will "move to topple the Harper government" as the headline suggests?
It says the Liberals will OPPOSE the Harper government. THAT IS THE JOB OF THE OPPOSITION. To oppose the government.
Does Iggy say the Liberals will vote against the government? No. Does Iggy say the Liberals will bring a non-confidence motion against the Conservatives? No.
Simply that they will "oppose" the government.

I get that every politician has flaws, including our current leader. No one will ever be happy, if you think about it.

I think pointing to "fear" this morning was appropriate...simply because it underscores the increasingly common inability amongst Liberals in this forum to put forth an idea, stand behind it, and debate it. Instead, you stamp your feet, feign outrage, and then wave a white flag in your opponent's face. Hardly "brave." This directly parallels Mr. Ignatieff's behavior. Interesting.
There's my rebuttal, Rick. Enjoy.

Or the one that suggests that spoiling a ballot is going to help at all.I know the choices are not always good.We should have remembered that when we were picking on Americans for electing their former president G.W.Bush.We don't always get the choice we would like, but it's still better to vote for "the least offensive candidate",than to let others decide the fate and direction of the country you live in,and hope to pass on to future Canadians.
Or suggesting that Harper is spending to much, and should be removed.I guess I agree that his spending is troublesome, but how is electing a party that like taxing and spending even more tha Harper, going to help working Canadians?? Harpers debt is a problem,so lets elect Liberals?? Duh!!
Our military people and our veterans deserve better.I agree entirely. But it's certainly not Liberals or the NDP who will make that happen.Of all the political parties,ONLY Mr.Harper and his party respect our brave citizens who serve in our CF.
Political differences of opinion about issues of the day are expected. But for those who support Liberals,I would ask one question."If you had so many good ideas for improving the situations in all of our broken institutions, why didn't you implement them when you were in power" ??
Excuse me if I don't believe you now.I might,if you hadn't lied to me before. You bear the shame of fooling me once.I will not bear the shame of being fooled by you again.

Are you still arguing that claim? The Bloc wasn't part of the coalition? Really? So if the Bloc didn't agree with something and choose to vote with the conservatives you don't think the Liberals/NDP would have changed something in their favor just to keep the vote?
The Lib/NDP didn't have enough seats to take over the government on their own, they had to have to Bloc seats as well. It doesn't matter that they werent' going to be in the cabinet. Without the Bloc a coalition would be pointless.
Defintion of Coalition: An alliance, especially a temporary one, of people, factions, parties, or nations.
This is exactly what they had.
Let it go and change your name to Liberal, you claim that your a conservative but yet ever time you make a comment you are supporting the Liberals.

If Layton or Duceppe, on the other hand, said "NO" then Ignatief would be hanging out a mile, his credibility would be destroyed, and he would lose Quebec in an instant because they would not trust him.
Knowing this, Ignatief will call for support of the other parties before he makes a move, there will be political debt and the coalition will be hoisted on Canadians but in an election format. If that happens the Conservatives have the wedge issue they need to drive for a majority.
Ignatief and the Liberals could be harmed over the long term by the refusal of any opposition party to go with them when calling an election. The spoils that would go to the NDP, the BLOC or even to the Conservatives would be a tempting reason to use this strategy against the LPC.

Wow. I don't even know where to begin. This is made up, right? You can't be serious.
Sorry your wife has to work as a cashier, but a lot of people with educations, who were born in this country, find themselves in the same position when they're suddenly turfed from a well paying job. Everyone needs to eat, and we don't all automatically turn to the welfare lines.
If you think the Harper government is to blame for the immigration problems in this country, you've got a lot to learn. How about contacting the medical associations in each province and see how they rate your wife's nursing experience. I'd like to know who your Liberal candidate is, I bet he has some swamp land or snake oil for sale...
Let's see...you want the Liberals to solve the health care crisis. Hmm, like they've done for Ontario with our health tax and eHealth scandal? No thanks.
Don't patronize us with your wish for an election in your "new home". If you don't like it, leave. Hard work, not government handouts, is what this country desperately needs now.

At last check the Liberals are out-polling the Conservatives in all regions except the prairies. In fact, the Conservatives are edging towards single digits in Quebec.
If we have an election the change in parliament will be minimal with a few seats swinging back to the Liberals. Unlikely to be enough for anywhere near a majority. However I can see why the Liberals would want to

Ignatieff wants an election because he doesn't want to be the opposition until retirement age. That being said, he'd rather lose now so he can be on his merry way to go back and work in the US. All the Liberals convinced this guy (but not Canadians) that he will be the next PM. The polls show that it will not happen. Goes to show how the Liberal brass still have the arrogance attitude of "how can we lose"?
Well Iggy, get it over with if you want. Take the country to another election and Canadians will show you and the rest of the Libs, that the Liberal party will be out of power for a very long time. It is all about power..nothing else.
Oh...and try that littl coalition trick again and it will DESTROY the Liberal Party for good. Canadians don't like it and sure as heck don't want it.

I don't think that the Liberals would have fared much better have they had been in power during the course of this recession.
I think tht Harper (being an economist) was very prudent in what he did. Sure, he didn't say right away that Canada was in the midsts of an economic downturn, because he did not want to create more panic that was pulling down the markets. Instead, he kept a cool head and read the charts correctly, thus Canada was spared the worst of the recession.
I'm sure that Iggy has some good idea's and could be a pretty good leader, but not as Prime Minster.
I want a leader who is connected with Canadians and who has been in the country living through the good times and the bad and Iggy certainly was not here at that time.
The other candidates are just way to left and are not good for the country. Mr. Layton believes he would be the man for the job, but I don't think he represents Canadians or what this nation is all about.
and as for the Green Party, well I don't think it's such a great idea having a bunch of former hippies running the show.
So, that leaves us with Harper and if Iggy does force this government to fall and cause another election, I believe that we will be right back to where we start from and that's with another Conservative minority government.

In a time of economic turmoil I don't see how any responsible person can think that having a very expensive election every year can be a good use of a very finite numers of resources.I urge ALL Canadians, especially those of us who live in the west,to severely punish every Liberal who takes part in forcing us back to the polls. We have plenty of good reasons not to return to the days of being a colony to Ontario.Even if you don't care for Mr.Harper,I genuinely believe you will hate another Liberal term.A term that will see higher taxes, more debt for ur children,no support for our military,no interest in our Arctic claim,no reform of our injustice system,no rules for refugees and immigration, people working for a few weeks and spending the rest of the year living off your tax dollars, and obviously no interest in Senate reform of any kind.
WHile I agree that Harper has made minimal progress on getting these things in motion,I think his minority status, and the current global economy, give him some reasonable reasons for slow progress. But these are things he believes in,and I think Liberals should also believe in.I think most Canadians want most of those things too.Whether Harper can deliver or not, remains to be seen. But there is NO CHANCE we will see real improvements if we elect a Liberal government that doesn't even consider those issues as important goals worthy of moving forward with.
No more "NDP Lite",please. Not at this time.

The Liberals were in power for many years before the Tories(which have just been in since 2006)and didn't address any of the issues that you are worried about. The Liberals have been known over the years to promise anyone everything that they want, and to break those promises once in power.
We welcome you to Canada, but I sincerely hope that you won't be taken in by Liberal promises and give the Tories a chance to do things better for Canadians. After all they have been in a minority Government and have been stalled on many issues by the opposition.

Sure, there was intense backlash against the idea, but it was because most Canadians do not understand the political system! We elect MP's, NOT the prime minister, and those MP's would not be going anywhere if the coalition did go through. The coalition was initially proposed because Harper refused to work with the opposition (as is required in a minority government in order to make parliament work) and it would have been irresponsible to send Canadians to the polls for the second time in as many months.
Coalition governments worked in many other countries, so why not Canada?

Mark, do you mind if I correct you on one point? Speaking of Mr. Ignatieff's claim to bring better government, you write:
"Oh yeah Michael? Better than a coalition with the NDP and the Bloc..."
Actually Mark the coalition did not include the Bloc. The Liberals and NDP were going to form the Cabinet, and the Bloc agreed not to vote against the new government on any matters of confidence.
Mr. Harper, however, misled the country by claiming that the Bloc were going to be part of the government, and that set the alarm bells ringing for many people. This has created the myth that the Bloc would be in Cabinet, a myth that persists to this day.
Another myth is that Mr. Harper was trying to steer the country though an economic crisis while the Liberals were trying to pull it down.
The facts do not support that interpretation, however. The NDP and the Liberals warned, during the election, that a recession was coming. This had become evident to economists around the world who were familiar with the mortgage situation in the States.
But the NDP and Liberals were accused of "fear-mongering," and Mr. Harper said there would be no recession. When it occurred, he refused to table a budget recognizing the economic downturn, and that's why the coalition was formed.
Thankfully, the threat of losing power forced Mr. Harper to re-think his proposed budget- whether for good or ill, we don't know. Perhaps we'll recover without the stimulus, if the States improves first. But that's why Mr. Ignatieff keeps saying he'll hold the government on a leash- because those are his ideas that are being implemented.
But it is absurd to argue that the stimulus package was Mr. Harper's idea. It was forced on him by the threat of coalition.

At least you go out and vote, even if it is a spoiled ballot. Because of the immature antics of our federal politicians, many voters won't even do that.
Until the political parties can get it into their heads that they are supposed to represent the people of Canada, we will have more of the same every election.
Mr. Ignatieff's "new blood" gave the liberals a chance to change. Instead he just accepted the liberal "entitlement" role lock stock and barrel.
They way this country is being run is getting more and more like the so-called banana republics canadians laughed at a decade or so ago. All we need now is a coup just to complete Canada's transformation from a credible nation to a laughing stock.

This is serious stuff,my friends.Another election at a cost of more than $300 million dollars?? You have got to be kidding me.How responsible can that be? Is it really in the best interests of Canadians? I can't believe it is.
I've been a Liberal for most of my past. While I voted for the Conservatives during the last two elections,I always thought the Liberals would return to support that party. It now appears that is NOT GOING TO HAPPEN any time soon.It now seems evident that, before you can build new,you have to tear down the old.We likely have to do to the same to the Liberals as we did to the PC Party. Not a pleasant time for voters, who have to live trough a period of a one party system.Just like the days when Chretien got a free ride to power because the PC's split, and the BLOC was formed.
This IS NOT the Liberal party I was once proud to be a member of.They're to stupid to use their time in opposition to refresh their party with policies we can vote "for".All they have put out is spite and hatred that they hope will convince us to vote "against" the current government. While I had hoped to keep Conservatives in a minority situation,I now believe Liberals have given voters no choice but to give Mr.Harper his majority. That is the ONLY way we can stop this nonsense.Make them PAY.

Michael has a very deep desire to be PM and would not want the economy to turn around while the Conservatives are in power, even though their steady approach in dealing with it has been effective.
Now is not the time to "rock the boat" and I hope that if the Liberals do manage to force an election( with the NDP & Bloc in their back pockets)that they will be severely reprimanded by the voters.

Instead of an election about changing the government, any election now would be whether to grant the Conservatives a majority or not, and the Conservatives will be running under that banner, saying that it’s either them or The Coalition. It’s a great angle for them, and the Liberals lose every which way under it. As some reporter said, Iggy is 62, and he’s only going to get one shot (it’s a dumb policy, but it’s likely the one Liberals will take).

Will Mike let's not forget the cuts to the military, to the point that when the Conservatives took power we were still using obsolete equipment which the Liberals sent us into Afghanistan with. The Sea King helicopter replacement program that was scrapped which in the end cost us more money than the original contract and to save more money the offer of the FRP to the forces to reduce the number of personnel, that is now hurting us.

The discourse in the House of Commons degenerated about the time Stephen Harper was selected leader of the "new" Conservative Party of Canada. Ever since his hard ball style in opposition the tone in the house was negative...
Even in power with a larger minority he wanted to kick his opponents while they were down. Harper is Bush lite and we all know what happened to the Republicans...

The polls show the Bloc in trouble and the NDP bleeeding votes to Liberals. Neither the Bloc or NDP want an election right now because they will loose seats.
All iggy is doing is blustering to poise his party as the alternative to the Tories. Thus forcing the NDP or Bloc to support the Tories in Parliment. Or else there will be an election which the Bloc and NDP do not want.
The image of the bloc or NDP supporting the Tories would be gold for the liberals and a disaster for the Tories as well as the NDP or Bloc.
Reality is the other 3 parties are only interested in ONE thing. Power..... and they will do anything to get it.
Sadly i thought it was about the good of the country, not the good of the Liberal Party.

I lost my job early in this recession but I got a job for 16 weeks before I got layed off, and if we had the liberals in power I could be collecting EI to support my 3 kids. When my family came to Canada we were promised jobs and a better way of life. My wife has been forced to work as a store cashier and she is qualifed to be a nurse but cant get her accredation here in Canada. If the liberals were in power my liberal candidate told me they would give everyone a job who is qualified.
I also want the liberals to get into power to solve the heath care crisis. Two of my kids have cronic ailments and need alot of care and it seems all we do is wait for tests. These are children they should not have to wait for health care they are children.
I want an election in Canada my new home. I voted in the last election for the first time as a Canadian and I will vote again for the only party with compassion the Liberal Party.

That's your posted comment?
What a wimpy excuse to refrain from putting forth your own ideas (assuming you actually have any, which, is looking questionable) and adding to the "exchange of ideas." Perhaps Liberals are just barking toy poodles with shaky convictions; and that's why you're finding yourself outnumbered.
I've NEVER based a decision for posting a comment upon the strength of the flow of like-minded opinion. Sometimes you make a comment and get hammered by the opposition, and sometimes you get overwhelming praise from those with a similar mindset.
It's an open forum. Get hip to it.

And what exactly will Ignatieff' s platform be based on, dropping the EI down to 360 hours?
I am not suggesting that is the answer, but Harper is tall on persoanl agendas and the conservatives are nothing but a white wash Reform party, with no solid policies themselves. Some of the best policies in Canadian gov. came from minority gov.(Medicade). A minority gov. has the responsibility to work with the opposition to form solid, concrete policies that will help the country. "Isn't crying about the coalition getting a little old"? At the risk of engaging in a debate with another in this forum-no it's not. It's about 8 months old and came close to causing a massive upset to this country as the government was trying to do all it could to navigate this huge economic disaster. I don't think risking this country's economic, political, social and perhaps constitutional health is EVER old.
Perhaps the Liberals who would rather just forget about their legacy of tax and spend, vote-buying, obscene patronage and so forth like to use excuses such as 'isn't that old'?

Do you all have the I.Q of a speed bump?
With record spending and tax cuts Harper has forced Canada into a $50 BILLION deficit. Sooner or later someone has to pay for this - and it will be Canadians either through reduced services, increase taxes or both.
Harper has broken most of his promises - senate reform, income trusts, trasparent govn't, Arctic ice breakers, etc.
And he did not "save" Canada from recession - it was the Liberal banking and financial policies that did this. Harper pushed for US-style banking de-regulation when he was in Opposition. Where would we be now if he was successful?
Please get over your memory loss and realize the Harper is not a leader, he's just another weasel politician.

1) Harper's "transparent" govn't - most secretive govn't in history.
2) Senate reform - Harper continues to appoint CPC campaign managers and other cronies claiming that once they have “cash for life” will give this up, loose their jobs so Harper can reform the Senate – never happen. Harper has not pushed this with the provinces or other parties. Senate reform, if he was serious about it, could get Harper hs Majority (also never happen).
3) Making Parliament work for Canadians - every vote is a confidence vote - until Harper gets called on it last Dec and hides under the GGs skirt.
4) Environment / climate change - Baird did do a great job representing the oil industry at int'l meeting on climate change - all else from this govn't has been fluff.
5) Sound govn't fiscal management of tax dollars - record spending, record deficit; every economist says the GST cut was a waste. And Harper continues to blow money he doesn't have almost daily!
6) Arctic sovereignty - where's the ice breakers and the deep sea port? But we did get a snazzy new homepage! I bet that will show those pesky Danes and Russians who's boss!
7) A-stan - A war Canadians don't want that is getting so expensive the Harper govn't won't release the costs (remember that thing about "transparency?")
8) Election In-and-Out scam - the CPC did everything it could to derail a Cabinet Committee on this, including writing a "how to" book on disrupting committees and of course, calling an election before they were actually found guilty.
9) Merit based appointments to Committees – Harper has stacked all committees with CPC cronies and losers, including filling scientific committees with CPC fundraisers and far-right Christians.

The Liberal Party, of the two parties who are most likely to form a majority government are MORE in line with my general overview of how this country should be governed, and the directin we should take. Harpers Conservatives fail time and again to win my trust or respect. I do not like Mr. Cannons announcement on the changes to our foriegn policy, I do not like neocon financial attitudes, they are the cause and not the cure of the worlds economic turmoil. For the first time in my lifetime we have a trade deficit this year, and the steepest deficit in our national budget both under a Harper government. bad bad bad.

The question of the day is: Who would you vote for ?
61% Conservative versus only 26% Liberal
An article yesterday has pro-Conservative thumbs ups at an astounding approximate 750 to 120
Given that the opinion polls have the Liberals & the Conservatives almost tied in polular support, I guess the only real reason to even read these posts on CTV is to be able to read what fanatic Conservative supporters think (assuming that they can think)
Not much incentive to bother to post in future as this is not a balanced forum or exchange of ideas, but rather just a Conservative propaganda tool as I always suspected.

Let's be honest here. All his trumping around saying how HE has kept the conservatives in power and how HE is unhappy with the handling of stimulus money. Come on! He's trying to bolster his position because the entire Liberal party has no substance to base an election on.
First off, he doesn't have the stones to bring down a government within a year of the previous election, especially since his party is still in disgrace from nearly making a deal with the devil... I mean the Bloc. Second, it would probably be a good idea for him to figure out his own party platform and resolutions to issues before declaring himself the saviour of a Canada that doesn't need to be saved.
Finally, lets take a logical look at the way an election would turn out if Mr.Ignatieff was to bring down the government. The way polls are looking, no one cares for the NDP because Jack Layton is a fool, resulting in little to no one voting for them as has been the norm for the NDP in national politics, the Conservatives and Liberals battling it out with the Tories still on top. The results would clearly be another minority government for the Tories AGAIN or FINALLY a majority for the Tories. Stephen Harper has probably done more with 2 minority governments than the liberals were able to accomplish in their 12 year reign under Chretien and Martin. So I ask you, does CANADA really want another election with the exact same outcome as the last 2?

It's no secret to anyone following Canadian politics, regardless of their partisan stripe, that Michael Ignatieff's entire reason for being is to become Prime Minister. The man's desperate quest is based upon his own righteous destiny.
Never was it, nor will it ever be, about CANADA and it's direction. It's all about Iggy, and a selfish "achievement" he has fantasized about during his long existence as a Canadian entirely content to reside outside of his own country.
Watching Mr. Ignatieff and his Liberals struggle to muster up a reason to trigger an election is hilarious; as any "reason" will amount to merely an excuse. He NEEDS to be Prime Minister, and any excuse to run will do.
-------------
Standing in continual partisan criticism of the present government, as leader of the Opposition, is any easy task in politics. You can always find something to gripe and pander to the masses about.
Having a tangible vision and a concrete platform of workable detailed ideas, and being able to LEAD a nation, is far tougher. As it stands, Mr. Ignatieff is shooting blanks and simply reinforcing the notion that Liberals are hollow electioneers.

Ignoring Canadians in trouble in 3rd world countries jails. Canada use to hold it head high and was held in high regard by other countries with our judicial system, now we are going to go with a US system? The numbers and the US's failed justice system we cannot afford, nor can we afford the effects it would have on our way of life and our pocket books.
As far as fiscal policy telling Canadians the recession is over, everything is OK and we are in the best shape of all the G8 countries, he is talking out of the side of his mouth. I work in the mortgage industry and keep a good pulse on what our economy is doing. We are far from OK and although some of the leading indicators may look like they are coming back you cannot ignore the EI problems and what I foresee as one of the worst periods to come(this winter). With EI running out, people living on credit, Bankruptcy up 51% in June compared to last year, companies reluctant to rehire in wholesale fashion in case of another hiccup in the economy, and also now with a WORLD economy we are not isolated and are at the mercy of what is happening everywhere in the world.
It is time Mr. Ignatieff comes out full force this fall, makes Canadians aware of the arrogance of Harper and the conservative party and their policies, and pull the plug and call an election. Although most of us are tired of the recent spat of elections, Harper has shown his arrogance and I am sure their are many others whom would be persuaded to vote Liberal in order to put to an end this type of majority thinking type of politics going on right now. I know quite a few others that feel this way as well and you need to ramp up the attacks on Harper(Conservatives) and make Canadians aware of this arrogance. You will get my vote and I believe a lot of others. Good Luck.

We certainly see the Harper bashers trying to substantiate removing him from the office of Prime Minister.
After all, if PM Harper remains until the recession is over then the Liberals, NDP and BLOC cannot claim any victory in assisting Canada out of this recession.
The only claim to fame the Liberals, NDP and BLOC will receive is that they drove our country into deeper debt by insiting that PM Harper bury us deep in the red to avoid a coalition take over. Imagine now how bad that would have been with the 3 amigos at the helm.

Harper mean while spends the summer, working to turn our economy around, talking to Canadians and addressing Canadian issues like our arctic sovereignty.
The Cons helped our economy weather one of the worst economics downturns since the Great Depression, with a lot less impact than many other countries. They have cut taxes and insured Canadians have more money in their own pockets. They have expanded our armed forces.
The Liberals have blocked the Cons attempt to reform the Senate. Blocked a critical crime bill which would see criminals actually pay for the crimes they commit. Their leader would rather be an American or a Brit than a Canadian.
Fine lets have an election, so when they lose they can send Ignatieff back to Europe for more tea parties.

Ignatieff please...stop pounding your chest like a monkey with a complex, and just go away. NOBODY wants an election..and if you try and bring down this government, you Sir, will be the one who is on political life support!

Oh really Michael? Better government like a coalition with the NDP and the Bloc? Like paper bags full of cash as is the Liberal legacy? Like how YOU supported the Iraq war? Like a proposed and entirely un-tested carbon tax credit just before the biggest economic crisis of our generation?
That kind 'better'?
Mr. Ignatieff reminds me of the little boy that called Wolf-he threatens an election everytime he senses no one is paying attention to him. By the way Michael, where have you been all summer? When you have something substantive to offer I may pay attention, but the biggest thing you've had to offer is a mediocre and largely irrelevant unemployment eligibility issue. Surely you can come up with something real.

That said I dont have a fondness for the conservative leader at this point either. What i would like to see is something from both leaders as to why we should support them, and not why we shouldnt like the other party (stop the attacking). Give me a reason to follow, open to either parties. If you cant, enjoy your 55% voter turn out, 10% green party support and minority governments.
