The Canadian government has hired two former White House press secretaries in a bid to boost Canada's coverage in the U.S. media.

Michael McCurry, a former spokesperson for Bill Clinton, and Ari Fleischer, a spokesperson under George W. Bush, now have the job of getting Prime Minister Stephen Harper interviews with the major U.S. media organization to promote Canada's economy and its close ties to the United States.

Kory Teneycke, Harper's spokesperson, said the hirings were made to promote and frame Canada's image to an audience in the U.S. that is often unfamiliar with its northern neighbour.

"This isn't just a matter of booking media interviews, this is about helping to sell Canada's story," he told CTV's Power Play. "Often in Canada there's a mistaken belief that proximity equals awareness . . . in a number of key areas there's very little awareness of key facts about Canada . . . like the fact that we did not have to bail out our banking sector . . . or that we are their largest energy supplier."

Promoting Canada's agenda in a foreign country usually falls to diplomats and embassies, but Teneycke said it was "unrealistic" to expect Foreign Affairs officials to have the same pull as the men they hired.

"We have one of the best embassies in the world in Washington . . . however, some of the skills we are talking about are extremely specialized," he said. "It would be unrealistic to expect Foreign Affair officials . . . are going to have the same level of media contact and information about how to frame Canada's story to a U.S. audience as two of the top former White House press secretaries would have.

"Canada deserves nothing but the best."

Teneycke admitted that the hirings were made at a time when the U.S. media spotlight on Canada would be rosy, considering the contrasting economic situations between the two countries.

"You need every possible edge you have, in terms of getting your country's agenda on the forefront," he said of the U.S media coverage.

Teneycke refused to say how much the pair were being paid for their jobs or for how long, but said the salary numbers would be disclosed in due time.

Bob Reid, a media-relations expert with Veritas Communications and a former press secretary himself, under Ontario premier Mike Harris, said that the hirings were probably worth it for the tax payer.

"I think it's money well spent, it's public relations in action," he told CTV Newsnet. "All you have to do is look at history, we have consistently had a problem being front in mind for Americans."

He pointed out Canada's diminished influence in Washington during George W. Bush's time in office, as Britain and Mexico improved their relations with the U.S.

"We've never really been at that A-list (in Washington) before," Reid said.

He said with Barack Obama's new administration and new world economic order seemingly in the works the timing of the hirings makes sense.

"It's absolutely critical . . . that Canada has the highest possible profile," Reid said.

this shouldn't happen especially at this time while tens of thousands of Canadians are loosing their jobs.

London: I dont blame Harper for not talking to the media in Canada, (or for that matter the average Canadian sheeple.) They are generally a bunch of sanctimonious, whining wimps, always looking for ways to either feel outraged or offended or assume the facade of some overinflated and egregious state of being in order to reinforce their sense of entitlement and thrive in a culture of self inflicted injurious victimhood.

I guess its official. Harper will be working in the US after the next election and he is using YOUR tax dollars to fluff up his resume. If there is no outrage over this from con supporters it will pretty much officially mean they have zero credibility and moral authority. Worst PM ever and there was so much hope when the "West got in". Good luck fooling us next time.

With current exchange rates we could see more Americans up here touring our country. P.R. never hurts and we know we haven't had positive vibes through the Chretien, Martin years. Maybe with Iggy's experience and years as an American we can improve our position from a Liberal perspective. But until then let's do things the Canadian way.

The idea of promoting Canadianism to the USA is a good move however Mr. Harper should take his lesson to the Canadaians and talk to us via as many venues as possible. It would be a two fold lesson, we get to know more about Mr. Harper and Mr. Harper gets to learn how to communicate with feeling to us,Canadians,

Anyone who says this is a bad idea can't see past their own toes. Harper hiring well connected people in the US, to promote Canada, trade, our stature in the world, and the products we produce will only serve to benefit Canada. The people complaining about this obviously have no idea of what the word "marketing" is. Where do you think over 80% of our goods go? Think before you comment. I get the feeling that some in this country would have us completeley isolated from the rest of the world. OH YA ...that's communism. sheesh!!! Wake up people and open your eyes!

When Canadians stop supporting the British monarchy and became a full-fledged country, then they can complain about sovereignty. As an ex-Canadian, it never ceases to amaze me how Canadians do not want stronger ties with the US, but insist on the pathetic monarchy as a sign of identity. What an embarrassment.

This is a great move. Harper has always had trouble connecting with the media and getting his message out, in any country or any language. He only made headlines at the G20 Summit because he missed a "photo op" and the world press liked to speculate why. He has a serious message to get out, as the leader of the smallest G7 nation, and he needs to get it to all of the key players. Maybe he should think about hiring Jean Chretien's old pal and Director of Communications, Peter Donolo, now at the Strategic Counsel in Toronto to handle Canada. Why don't you give him a call Mr Teneycke?

An excerpt from Ari Fleischer's recent rant on his version of "fair taxation"

"I favor the abolition of all Social Security, Medicare and estate taxes. In their place, we should create a simple income tax system that has no deductions or credits at all. The result would be a progressive, multitiered income tax in which everyone pays. The bottom 50% won't be excused from paying the cost of government..."

Do you really want this guy advising our so called leaders on policy?

I don't.

Great idea he will be up against Canada's warmonger Mr. Lesser Evil and Blood and Belonging himself.
Harper has to beat the American just like Dion did by exposing who the man really is.
Harper is the only real Canadain that loves our country all the time, I use to be a Liberal but it seems to be a collection of losers now trying to reinvent themselves or pretend they are something they are not.
I have really warmed up to Harper he is a genuine Canadian Leader we can be proud of.

Wait... he hired Ari Fleischer?!? The man who, just days ago, told media that the best way to get out of the Financial Crisis was to tax the poor? The United States is trying to distance itself from the Bush administration, and Harper hires a man from the same administration to go right back into the American political limelight? Harper we know your name is getting dragged through the mud but please don't bring the whole of our country into the same pit you're in.

It is all too truly wonderful that Harper wants to connect to the US media so that those poor Americans will understand us poor little Canadians. Harper sucking up to the US media is clearly far more important than even trying to talk to the Canadian media and worse, heaven forbid to Canadians. He needs to take several lessons from Obama who isnt afraid to talk to Americans since he knows first and foremost that they are the ones he is accountable to. Harper, on the other hand, clearly feels he is not accountable to Canadians. How pathetic is that?

For better or worse some of the largest investors are located in the United States. Putting Canada on the map is both politically and economically vital. It will stir new investment and make Canada a larger player on international relations.

Stratgically speaking this is a great move by our Prime Minister.

Inkmont
said

I think it's a good idea to put Canada more in the forefront of the consciousness of the American people in general and government representatives in particular. Then when various international issues come up, that knowledge could help to get Canada more support south of the border.

I also agree with London, above, that Mr. Harper would do well to address Canadians as well, on a more regular basis. I think he would get a lot more sympathy if he spoke to the people more often and had a more visible presence in the media.

People who dont understand marketing principles should not comment. Any time you can educate the USA about Canada its worthwhile. They are after all our biggest trading partner. It will mean jobs for Canadians in the long run. Thats the intent. Its not rocket science

I guess it takes the professional media to find something to stir controversy in the nation. The question about the money spent to showcase Canada's image is once more further proof of CTV's desire to be the talk of the nation. Stupid Question. The Pm is simply damned if he does, and damned if he doesn't.

Reporting news, I always thought, was somewhat different than sensationmaking - that belongs to the tabloids.

It is a sad statement about our relationship with the Americans when our government feels that we have to hire American lobbyists to get better access to the USA.

By the way, how much is this costing the taxpayer?

What happens if these lobbyists suggest that if Liberal Ignatieff was PM then we would be better accepted by the Obama administration and get better access?

MHB, "buying Canadian" in this scenario would be a disservice to Canadians.. They couldn't provide the services we were looking to have fulfilled.. I am currently unemployed (downsized a few months ago, but actively looking..) and would rather hire the best for the position, not someone strictly based on a qualification that isn't strictly pertinent for the job. In the long run it will benefit me and those in our country if the right decisions are made.

This is absolutely the right move. Both Fleischer and McCurry are quality individuals who will help the government sell Canada in the U.S., OUR LARGEST TRADING PARTNER. Any loony out there who plays politics with this doesn't give a damn about Canada, or is too ignorant to know the reality of the world we live in, or as I most strongly suspect, would be against ANYTHING the Harper government does because he/she bases judgement not on facts or reality, but on their own narrow political views... Period. Remember our infamous leader of the NDP...he is so anti-american that he would close all doors to the U.S. and put tens of thousands more Canadians who manufacture and export out of work (as if we need more job losses).
