Four Canadian soldiers have been killed and another eight injured in Afghanistan in two separate improvised explosive attacks.

The dead have been identified as: Master Cpl. Scott Vernelli, 28, Cpl. Tyler Crooks, 24, Trooper Jack Bouthillier, 20, and Trooper Corey Joseph Hayes, 22.

Vernelli and Crooks died in an early morning blast at about 6:45 a.m. local time while on foot patrol in the Zhari district west of Kandahar. Another five Canadian soldiers were injured in that attack and a local interpreter was killed.

Bouthillier and Hayes were killed about two hours later when their vehicle was struck by a roadside bomb attack in the Shah Wali Kot district, about 20 kilometres northeast of Kandahar city. Three others were injured.

All the deaths occurred as the Canadians were taking part in a major operation attacking Taliban command centres and supply lines.

The operation was described as the largest joint Canadian-American military operation since Korea, CTV News' Jennifer Madigan reported from Kandahar.

About 2,000 U.S. and Canadian soldiers were involved in the operation. The offensive, called Operation Jaley, has been ongoing for the last four days under a total news blackout.

All the wounded soldiers were evacuated by helicopter and are listed in stable condition.

Brig.-Gen. Jonathan Vance, the commander of Canadian troops in Afghanistan, urged Canadians in a statement to not consider the deaths a failure of any particular person or the mission.

"Success in war is costly. We are determined to succeed so that Afghan lives improve, but the insurgents are equally determined to challenge and prevent Afghanistan from flourishing as the nation it so wants to be. Remember, the deaths of these superb Canadians occurred as Canadian Forces were bringing safety to those in peril. Today, they succeeded," he said.

Vance added that the soldiers died protecting the Afghan people.

All of the soldiers were based out of CFB Petawawa.

Madigan said the news of the deaths quickly spread around the Canadian base in Kandahar.

"The mood was very somber, it was very quiet . . . people sitting around breakfast without saying a word," she said.

Vernelli was described as an experienced and well-respected soldier. He is survived by his spouse and six-month-old daughter.

Madigan said that Vernelli's tour of duty was postponed earlier so he could be home for his daughter's birth and he was a "proud father."

Doctors also agreed to induce labour so that he could be there for his daughter's birth.

Vernelli spoke to CTV Calgary shortly after her birth and said, "I'll miss her a lot but the time that I have with her now . . . I'm cherishing every second I have.

Crooks was described as a keen soldier, an excellent athlete who "would do anything for you without even being asked."

Madigan said Crooks was very popular and often was seen sitting with much higher ranked officers.

Both Vernelli and Crooks were of November Company, 3rd Battalion of the Royal Canadian Regiment.

Bouthillier was known for his sense of humour, Vance said, and practiced martial arts.

Hayes was a "proud and dedicated soldier . . . who stood up for what was right," Vance said.

Both Bouthillier and Hayes were of the Royal Canadian Dragoons.

Prime Minister Stephen Harper expressed his condolences saying in a statement, "The commitment to make Afghanistan a better place to live, demonstrated on a daily basis by the brave men and women of the Canadian Forces, is a testament to the values respected and revered by all Canadians,"

The deaths bring the total number of Canadian soldiers killed in Afghanistan to 116.

never in my life would i ever thought id be writting this. although I knew my cousin/friend was a soilder in the war ,I never thought he would be taken for us all, as nieve as that may sound. I find myself today, thinking of childhood memories,& wonder how things could have turned out this way for a person so kind & loving & full of life, but I know deep in my heart that you (scott) belived in what you did, that you went & faught for those so they could have memories as good as the one you gave us. Its hard to understand , or to know what to feel right now.
but I hope,& my wish from all of this , is that something will be learned. That your sarcarfice wont be in vain. That if not globally , then in ourselves and for anyone who reads this article, that we all realize that life is precious... to stop what we are doing and hold on to the ones we love, and forgive eachother for petty arguments, and trival things , and tell them over and over how much you love them and when you think youre hugging too hard... hug harder, I ask you to do this beacuse of the person my cousin was... i ask you to do this for this is what he faught for... i ask you to do this for a man who will never be able to do any of these things again, & i ask you all to pray to that no more mothers, fathers, brothers, aunts , uncles, cousins, friends and most of all wives and daughters wont have to lose their loved ones.

Master Cpl. Scott Vernelli, was my cousin , my friend and forever our hero !

It is ok for PM Harper to say that we are committed in helping to Afghan a better place to live because he does not have a son, daughter, father, brother or sister putting their lives on the front line out there.

Only those who have lost can tell the pain they have to go through day after day and all the sleepless nights they have to face. The anguish of knowing that your child or children will live their lives without a father, mother, brother or sister. Not forgetting the parents who have lost their only child!

I think the PM should strongly reconsider and bring our people home as he is responsible for them and what has happened to them.

We are a country of peace we don't want to fight war we are not the US.

BRING OUR PEOPLE HOME PLEASE BEFORE WE ENDURE MORE DEATHS, PAIN, SUFFERING AND SORROW!!!

I just watched a program about Canada during the Korean war... These loses are a terrible price to pay, however as a nation we should be proud of these men. Just as those before them sacrificed their lives. As Warriors of peace, fighters of freedom, Canadians are willing to die for others so that they may one day have peace.

Canadians should be proud for what we stand for as a nation, & days like today prove that.

Thank you for your sacrifice..

We had a ramp ceremony.
We're in a holding pattern in the hangar. It's hot. There's no air circulating. Only people. Soldiers and civilians. We're waiting for last minute preparations. No one has had time for supper. Bottles of water are long gone.
We are all called out to the tarmac. You prepare yourself mentally to march alongside the soldiers. You stand proud and feel sad all at the same time. It's quiet now. We stand at attention waiting for the next command. It's hot. You can feel the blood rushing through your veins. Your sinuses are blocked because of all the dust you've breathed in. It feels like you're gasping for air.
The command is given. We turn to face the Herc. Left, left, left, right, left. The only noise you hear is the sound of boots as the soldiers are marching. The whooosh, whooosh of the camo uniforms brushing together, and arms swinging back and forth and we proceed. My hearing has focused on this sound as I haven't heard it in the past ceremonies. Whooosh. Is this the right sound? Everyone is in unison.
The sun is slowly setting, and the desert breeze is now being felt. It's a little refreshing. But you know that you're body has already reached it's heat capacity. There's no water anywhere. This time instead of having the back to the sun, we are facing it. I quickly glance to my right, and see the colours of the sunset. Such timing.
Your heart starts to beat faster and faster. Then you start saying to yourself that all will be fine. You convince yourself.
Heads slowly bow during prayer.
The command is given to the Soldiers to salute their fallen brother one last time. Moments later the Bagpiper begins to play. The draped coffin is being carried by the fallen's comrades who must brace themselves for the long walk to the Herc.
All becomes quiet again. There is a light blinking on the Herc. Almost like a guiding star. The coffin is lead up the ramp and is placed.
Oh gawd, you know that there is a command that will be given soon and you know that you have to walk back to the hangar. Breathe. Focus. Your legs are wobbly. Your eyes are tired from holding back the tears. Your body needs water. And there's the command telling us we must now march back the 1/4 kilometer. You see the hangar. You're almost there.
The sun has set. There is not a sound except for the left, left, left, right, left. Whooosh, whooosh sounds. The last command is given.
"Task Force Afghanistan, dimissed."

From Our family, our deepest sympathy to the families of the fallen Heroes. We need to bring our ground troops home. The talibans are waging geurilla warefare.

Only our Paramiltary and air forces need to stay. I would suggest, that we send more Military intelligence who must penetrate the enemy forces. We can't fight urban bandits with fully uniformed troops and expect to make any inroads. How come IEDs are now the "direct" enemy. Don't we have any "insiders" on the taliban side? It is utterly absurd to keep our ground troops fully exposed while the enemy is embeded in the society. Strategy must shift.

Soldiers have done more for this country than you seem to think. They dont ask to be called heroes, all they want is a little bit of respect from the people that they serve. Just remember this, if anything happend in this country, and your arse was in trouble, they would be the first people to bail you out, even though you have no respect for them. You see, they dont give a crap what narrowminded people like you think, they just do their job, and do it better than anybody else.

Canadian Forces Afghanistan,

As a patriotic Canadian I would like to say I am proud of each and every CDN Soldier who fights the good fight and helps root out Terrorists and Taliban Insurgents. From what I know, it takes tremendous courage, strength and a sincere belief in your country and fellow Soldiers, family in Canada to be successful. Canadian Soldiers are known worldwide for their training, expertise and willingness to help others in need.

Upsetting to learn of the deaths and injuries of the CDN Soldiers today and it never gets any easier. The young Soldiers who were killed today would have been a pleasure to meet with and probably had a lot of potential within the Canadian Forces.

As CDN Soldiers, I trust all of you are proud of yourselves for fighting Taliban Insurgents and Terrorism and I do hope you remember your fellow Soldiers who were killed and injured today for our country Canada. I know I will.

Every time that I learn of another Canadian soldier being killed I feel the pain. I am in tears now writing this. My 26 year old son was killed in a single vehicle accident (rollover) in Calgary on April 11 2008 (senseless)so I know the pain these families are experiencing. I only wish that he had been serving his country. His death would have made more sense. Ask the men and women who are serving in Afghanistan if they are ready to come home. They know the risks otherwise they would not be there. They know they are making a difference despite what the media says. Lets stand behind them. We live in the greatest country in the world because of freedom. They know that freedom is the greatest gift and they are there to set others free. I am 63 years old and I would take the place of any 20 something year old if I could. I served my country for 26 years in the RCMP and I would do it all over again in the military if I could. My desire was always to serve my country.

That's it. How many more of our young people are going to be sacrificed until our "leaders" decide fighting an unwinnable conflict is worth every drop of their blood? What about those who are "injured"? Do most Canadians understand this seemingly neutral term really means some young person's life has been changed forever through the loss of their legs or arms?
It's not worth sending our young people over there to sacrifice themselves and put thelr families through emotional misery for a country of people who have been killing each other for thousands of years.

Before people begin demanding the return of the troops, remember the following: In 1939, Hitler was "terrorizing the Jews" and invading countries. Did Canada stand back? Hell, NO!!! Did Canadians demand the troops return? Hell NO!!! What we are doing in Afghanistan is preventing another World War. If the terrorists were to spread out of Afghanistan, then we could be looking at World War 3. Do we want another World War? Furthermore, I'll never understand why people think these soldiers are some kind of heroes, alive or dead, since they don't even belong in Afghanistan in the first place. You want to be a warrior, you pay the price. Sorry for the soldiers who died, but they did nothing for me and this country hero wise.

I came home from work today, to find out that a friend of mine had passed away early this morning. Tyler was an amazing guy. We went to high school together, and he was the type of person who, when you were having the worst day and you saw Tyler and he gave you his great big hugs that he gave and told you some stupid joke, that wasn't even funny but he knew how to make it funny, or you talked about hockey with or anything, he made your worries go away. He is going to be missed by everyone and I know I'm sorry doesn't bring him back or make it better, but to his family, I am sorry for your loss. When Tyler is brought home, I will be at his funeral, and I will try not to cry, but one thing I can promise, is that I will stand there and I will be proud. Your going to be missed by so many Tyler. Bring our boys home.

NATO was asked by the UN, at the bequest of the Afghan Government, to provide security while reconstruction and development took place in this war torn country. Canadians are in Afghanistan because they are a part of this alliance we signed on to in 1947. Canadians are a noble and honourable people who follow through with their international commitments. What Col M Drapeau and Mr Sunil Ram fail to tell the public from their soap box is that the main security mission for NATO and Canada is to assist in training and developing the Afghan Army and Police forces to take over security so they can defend themselves and their legitimately ruling government. Canadians have trained a full brigade of over 5,000 Afghan soldiers, trained them faster and better than our allies and have improved the local police force concurrently. There is an Afghan force in 2009 in Kandahar where there was none in 2005. We were never to stay in this country forever. True, the force needs further nurturing and training but it is engaged along side Canadian soldiers and they are grateful for our efforts. This mission is to be complete in 2011 when the turn over of command authority is to take place from NATO to Afghan Forces. This mission is not a failure, nor have our Canadian soldiers wasted their lives. We will complete our mission and leave in 2011 with our heads held high. Mr Ram, Ms Chow and Mr Drapeau should be careful about the message they send. These educated people are unknowingly conducting the Taliban's work by assisting their information war campaign on our home front. Negativity does not equal solidarity.

We are there weather we like it or not. I just wish that the public could open their minds. and realize that this is what we as soldiers do. And take a look on youtube. It would be nice as a soldier to see the support as a soldier from the public.

So please stop the cries for us too pull out, and realize that this is in fact what a soldier trains for. and show your support.

We keep hearing the cry to bring the troops home because of such losses. Here is a reality check . . . during the Second World War which lasted six years, Canada lost over 45,000 soldiers. In Afghanistan we have lost over 100. It is time to put this into perspective. I have attended several of the funerals for those killed in Afghanistan and in everyone of them, the families supported what their deceased love ones were doing. Freedom exacts a very heavy price and it is usually in blood. The four young men who were killed in action have paid the ultimate sacrifice. " . . . and in the going down of the sun and in the morning, we will remember them."

said

Your sacrifice will not be forgotten nor will it hopefully be in vain. My sincere condolences to the families of the fallen.

Now to everyone complaining we should pull out...seriously??? The sacrifice these men and women made in Afghanistan would have been for no reason if we did so... I'm assuming by having us pull out of Afghanistan asap you would be o.k with sending other families sons/daughters/uncles/aunts/dads/mothers instead and that would be acceptable? The proud men and women serving our country abroad are there to do a job and unfortunatly there is a cost; you cannot win a war without suffering any casualties! When you enlist in the armed forces your doing so for various reasons but every soldier knows you might have to pay the ultimate price in order to accomplish the task at hand and that is a risk we all accept.

( I guess that (after reading through the comments) it's acceptable to have soldiers from any other country but our own fall in battle... I won't even begin to comment on the stupidity of that notion)

At ease men; you've earned your rest

The troops deserve to stay so long as they want to. They want to stay, they believe in the mission, and since they are the ones over there fighting, they are the ones who can decide whether or not to stay. They are the judge of whether or not the mission is truly succeeding. The troops deserve to know the mission will succeed so that their comrades didn't die in vain or for no purpose. The troops believe the mission will succeed, and so long as they believe in that there's no point to leaving. Soldiers don't give up because comrades are killed or wounded or because they themselves are wounded. Protecting freedom demands the sacrifice of human life and soldiers understand that. Canadians shouldn't give up on their soldiers if their soldiers haven't given up yet. It's up to the soldiers and since they want to stay, they should stay.

As a Conservative and a veteran it is time the government made a statement to the Canadian people of where we are heading. With a hundred and sixteen young Canadians dead and many maimed the question Mr harper has already answered that this war is not winable. If so What in hell are we doing there?Until we get other NATO countries to help Canada should move our troops back into protected bases and if no help is forthcoming GET OUT.It is a shame than our allies are such absolute cowards when it comes to this war. Lets get out of NATO along with the Americans and then see how fast those gutless Europeans act.We have saved their butts for the last time while young Canadians die and our treasury is depeleted.

Paul, I definitely have to agree with you there.

Its about time the Canadian Forces starts investing more time and money on air patrols instead of ground based operations.

Keep in mind the Taliban are not known for being effective in aerial combat, meaning the less ground patrols, the better.
