Even moderate drinking raises cancer risk

Drinking just one alcoholic drink a day significantly increases a woman's cancer risk, a large new study finds.

The study found that low to moderate drinking was linked to an increase in cancer risk and may account for nearly 13 per cent of the cancers of the breast, liver, rectum, and upper digestive tract combined.

The findings are in the online issue of the Journal of the National Cancer Institute.

The researchers examined the effect of alcohol consumption on women's cancer risk using the Million Women Study, which included almost 1.3 million middle-aged women in the United Kingdom.

Those women in the study who drank consumed, on average, one drink per day - which the study authors considered typical in most high-income countries such as the U.K. and Canada.

They found the risk of any type of cancer increased with increasing alcohol consumption, as did the risk of some specific types of cancer, including breast cancer, liver cancer and rectal cancer. Women who also smoked had an increased risk of mouth and throat cancers.

And the type of alcohol consumed, whether it was wine, beer or spirits, did not seem to have an effect on the link between alcohol and cancer risk.

Previous recent research has suggested that moderate alcohol consumption may offer benefits to the heart. But the excess cancer risk noted in this study may outweigh that benefit, say two doctors from the National Heart, Lung, and Blood Institute, in an accompanying editorial.

"From a standpoint of cancer risk, the message of this report could not be clearer. There is no level of alcohol consumption that can be considered safe," the editorialists write.

They note that these findings come from such a huge study population and should give readers pause about the effect their drinking is having on their health.

The incidence for these cancers was small for any individual woman, estimated at 118 per 1,000 women in developed countries (about 1.18 per cent). But every extra drink per day added about 15 cancers per 1,000 women.

"Although the magnitude of the excess absolute risk associated with one additional drink per day may appear small for some cancer sites, the high prevalence of moderate alcohol drinking among women in many populations means that the proportion of cancers attributable to alcohol is an important public health issue," the authors write.

The research echoes similar findings made last year by the National Cancer Institute which showed that women who had one to two drinks per day had a 32 per cent greater chance of developing breast cancer. Three or more drinks per day boosted the risk by 51 per cent.

Jasmine Lew, of the NCI, said at the time of that study that researchers aren't yet sure how alcohol influences a woman's breast cancer risk, but it may be that it acts on estrogen levels.

"What we think the alcohol is doing is increasing the amount of estrogen that a woman is exposed to, hence increasing her risk of getting this more common type of breast cancer," said Lew.

The Canadian Cancer Society advises that Canadians who choose to drink should limit the amount to:

  • less than one drink a day for women (pregnant women should avoid all alcohol)
  • less than two drinks a day for men

Purple grape juice does the same as the wine.

The wine industry propagated that myth that you should drink wine every day, what they forgot to mention was that A. the alcohol triggers cancer &
B. that purple grape juice does the same thing.

The so called studies were published by studies funded by the wine industry 25 years ago when they had lost much of their market share to beer.

Too many people use this myth as an excuse to drink.

Well...I could avoid all alcohol thinking I am making a difference in my health. Then one day..bam...get hit by a bus outside my house.

I will add this to the list of things I cannot eat or drink. ;)

Another new study telling us what we already suspect -> everything causes cancer. I'm waiting patiently for them to tell us that breathing too much air causes cancer and we should all stop exercising because it causes us to breath heavy.

Did any of you actually read the article, or even its abstract?

This is an observational cohort study of over a MILLION women in the UK. The article found an association between light to moderate alcohol consumption and an increase in incidence for a particular group of cancers - the incidence rate for a thousand women under the age of 75 rose from 118 cases to 133 cases PER THOUSAND, for a specific group of named invasive cancers. This study simply is telling the truth out there that people tend to ignore - alcohol is a known carcinogen!

Now it is clear that like smoking, drinking alchol is also a risk to the health of individuals. It also costs our healthcare system billions of dollars. Like smoking there should be more taxes on alcohol to keep safe the people and cover the extra costs government spends to treat these people. Like smoking, there should be ban on the advertisement of alcohol on print media and TV. Even there alcoholic drink should have some kind of warning labels like we see on the tobacco

Basically, cutback on alcohol consumption.

This is just waste of money. Then in 4 months time the headline will read 'A glass of Red a day will keep Cancer away'
If u are not sure of your researches, don't tell us. Work work work until you are sure. GEEZZ!! Causing trouble for nothing.

Does anyone out there remember the study back in the 80's that stated unequivocably that drinking water caused cancer? And what about that essentiall of life, oxygen? If it is so essential, why do we need anti-oxidants?

Stepping out of your door to go to work every morning raises your risk of getting killed in an accident by 100%.

Gee. Another study. Good thing it was done in the U.K., I really don't want my tax $s funding this crap. Don't the Drs over there have anything better to do with their time?? BUT, I do have a serious question though -- and this is in no way anti-anybody. Were there any Muslim women included in this study? They don't drink. Do Muslim women get these cancers? If so, what excuses do the Drs give in those cases. Was a similar study done in Italy, Spain, France and Portugal? I love it when these articles end with "We think this could be related to" or "It may be that". Yeah, sure, after a long and large study like this, they end up with GUESS WORK.

A glass a day is supposed to benefit your heart but what's good for one thing isn't always good for another! Stick to red grape juice which may benefit your heart since it contains some of the same compounds as red wine.

I'm from an evangelical background where most people do not drink alcohol. I know lots of women at my church who have battled breast cancer and other cancers. So all of the studies produce flawed theories.

Just yesterday I read a report that a "huge study" found that women who consumed more calcium appear to have a lower risk of all kinds of cancer.

I think I'll go wash my calcium supplement down with my nightly glass and red wine and LIVE UNTIL I DIE!

No big deal here.We live in the "Nagging state".It should be easy to get a looby gtoup together to ban alcohol too.
Or,if worse comes to worse, we can always add another tax.One that at least covers the cost of doing these studies.
Really. Are there still people who don't know that drinking every day can endanger your health?? I am more inclined to think people know all this, and simply consider it an acceptable risk.

To Ruby Chapman. Bubbles tend to be made of plastics which contain various forms of carcinogens, which cause cancer.

It's inevitable...no matter what you do, you'll get cancer if it's in your genes...
The friggin scare tactics and studies out there are getting beyond ridiculous. Maybe we should just all live in a bubble? Doubt if that would help either.

Can we just skip to the next study that says moderate alcohol consumption REDUCES the risk of some other evil disease....? TO ALCOHOL -- THE CAUSE AND THE SOLUTION TO ALL OF LIFE'S PROBLEMS

I thought wine (in moderation) was supposed to lower the risk of cancer.

Maybe I misunderstood or the story is changing every day.
