A Canadian accused of running a brothel for pedophiles in Thailand has two previous convictions for sexually assaulting young boys in Calgary.
John Wrenshall, 62, was a former Anglican choir member of Calgary's Cathedral Church of the Redeemer. Court documents show he had a history of abusing boys in the area, dating back to the early 1960s.
On Monday, British authorities arrested Wrenshall in London's Heathrow Airport. He faces extradition to the United States, where he is wanted on several charges stemming from allegations of child abuse in Thailand, including:
- one count of conspiracy to engage in sex tourism
- two counts of aiding and abetting sex tourism
- one count of conspiracy to produce child pornography
- seven counts of production of child pornography
- seven counts of distribution of child pornography
Wrenshall has been remanded into custody in Britain and is scheduled to make his next court appearance on Dec. 22.
None of the allegations have been proven in court.
The investigation apparently dates back to 2005, when Norwegian police found explicit images of child abuse on the Internet. That led to Interpol making a worldwide appeal for information, which led in turn to the arrest of U.S. citizen Wayne Nelson Corliss in New Jersey.
He was arrested last May and eventually pleaded guilty to several sex charges.
Corliss claims he stayed at Wrenshall's home in Thailand with two other Americans in 2000, 2001 and 2002. He said the men had sex with the boys and filmed the encounters.
Last August, Wrenshall was named in an 18-count indictment handed up by a federal grand jury in New Jersey and unsealed with his arrest.
Canadian authorities have not ruled out further charges, connecting to Canada's anti-sex tourism laws.
"There's going to be a lot of investigation continuing at this point in time, trying to find what he's been up to," said RCMP Sgt. Patrick Webb.
Court documents in Calgary reveal Wrenshall was convicted of abusing minors in 1970 and given a suspended sentence.
But he later re-offended and was sentenced in 1997 to one year in jail and another two years on probation.
