WILKIE, Sask. — Robert Latimer smiled and hugged fellow mourners when he arrived at his mother's funeral in Wilkie, Sask., with his wife Thursday.

Latimer recently moved to a halfway house in Ottawa after serving time in the death of his daughter Tracy.

Latimer was given permission by the National Parole Board earlier this month to visit his ailing mother, Mary, before he reported to the halfway house.

He said at the time she was suffering from "old age.''

Latimer was sentenced to life in prison with no chance of parole for 10 years for killing his severely disabled 12-year-old daughter with carbon monoxide gas.

He has always said he took her life for compassionate reasons and will continue to press for a new trial.
