With polls showing the NDP and Liberals battling for second place, Liberal Leader Michael Ignatieff lashed out Tuesday and suggested the New Democrats are "boy scouts" who are not ready to govern.

A Jack Layton government would be a mistake, he said, especially on a file like Afghanistan, where the NDP has demanded Canadian troops be pulled out immediately.

"Come on, folks, let's be serious," Ignatieff said in Vancouver Tuesday.

"We've got to choose a government on the 2nd of May; we can't choose a bunch of boy scouts on this issue."

Ignatieff insisted a vote for the Liberals is the only true alternative to a Conservative majority.

"If you vote for Mr. Layton, you're going to get a Harper minority government. If you vote for Mr. Duceppe, you're going to get a Harper minority government," Ignatieff said.

It's an argument Ignatieff has been making the entire campaign and one that is starting to lose its weight, as some polls show the NDP to be passing the Liberals for second place.

Much of the NDP's newfound strength has been in Quebec, where many of their candidates are young and relatively inexperienced.

Ignatieff pounced on that issue, showing off his Liberal team in a photo-op that included many former cabinet ministers who have handled the big files like the economy and Afghanistan.

The NDP can expect the scrutiny to continue throughout the dying days of the campaign.

The NDP currently has just one MP in Quebec, deputy leader Thomas Mulcair, but according to some projections the party could garner as many as 14 or 15 seats in the May 2 election if poll numbers hold true, said CTV's parliamentary correspondent Richard Madan.

That has Bloc Leader Gilles Duceppe scrambling to maintain his own support, even bringing out separatist icon Jacques Parizeau on Monday to warn people about the risks of voting for the New Democrats.

And on Tuesday a Liberal news release took aim at the NDP over what it referred to as "empty promises on health care."

The release questioned Layton's pledge to hire 1,200 doctors and 6,000 nurses at an estimated cost of $25 million per year, saying the math simply doesn't add up.

Hiring that many medical professionals "amounts to an annual salary of $3,472 per year. Is that enough to hire 7,200 new medical professionals? Not a chance, Jack," the release states.

With the party's surging fortunes the New Democrats can expect to face tougher scrutiny from their opponents in the six remaining days before Canadians go to the polls, Madan said.

"Definitely the wildcard is the NDP. They could really have an enormous breakthrough or play the spoiler and upset the balance in these key critical ridings," Madan said.

In a sit-down interview with CTV Montreal Tuesday, Layton said he was not surprised by his party's surge in Quebec, saying that he had been hoping for a breakthrough in the province of his birth.

"We've been building toward this for a long time," Layton said. "I'm a guy who was born and grew up here in Quebec, so certainly it's been a dream of mine for the NDP, whose values are close to the values of the people I grew up with."

When asked if he thinks the polling numbers are believable, Layton responded with "I think they are (but) we'll see how it all comes down. Polls are polls."

The NDP's growing support in Quebec represents a serious threat to Ignatieff and the Liberals, said University of Toronto politics professor Nelson Wiseman.

"Some pollsters are saying this earthquake in Quebec is developing into a tsunami in the rest of the country and we don't know if we're going to have a nuclear meltdown for the Liberals," he told CTV's Canada AM.

Polling released on Monday by Nanos Research showed the NDP edging just ahead of the Bloc in Quebec for first place, though within the margin of error meaning the two parties were in a statistical tie.

Wiseman said an unprecedented showing in Quebec would represent a huge shift for the NDP.

"If the NDP really does make a breakthrough in Quebec and wins 30 or 40 seats it would mean more seats there than in the rest of Canada, and that's never happened and it would be a total reorientation of the NDP," Wiseman said.

He said many of the NDP's candidates in Quebec are inexperienced and are considered "sacrificial lambs" with no chance of winning. However, if the polls hold true, they could easily find themselves in government.

Layton denied that his party's candidates aren't yet ready to serve in government, saying they are from diverse professional backgrounds such as the law, teaching and community organizing.

"I'm very optimistic that we've got the right mix that will represent the full range of opinions that you find here in Quebec around the key issues," Layton said. "So I'm looking forward to having a diverse group of Quebecers around our caucus table."

When I read these idealistic solutions people have it is very easy to see why the older generation needs to step aside (myself included) and let the youth do the thinking. Hell we have had 50 years to get it right and look at what we have achieved! Still name calling and pointing fingers give it a rest folks the Gov. needs fixed and we know the Libs/Cons cannot get it done. Fact is NDP could be the answer oh they may well have to adjust some dates and money but I believe they are very capable. Now I do not want to hear - look at what he / she / they done 100 years ago get with the program folks!!

THis is a fine time to stasrt whining. For the last 5 years all we have gottem from the Liberals is a smear campaign, and a whole hots of specious arguments as to why we should stop Harper. Honestly,if Liberals had spent that time offering Canadians a credible alternative,we would't be in this mess. Now,with no hope of a Liberal government,we are left with either a majority for Harper,or a ridiculous coalition of people who can't win an election on the basis of their own policies. I would urge all Liberals who once supported a centre left Liberal policy,to give Harper his chance to govern.Fix your party, and we can bounce out Harper the next time. There is no way on earth a united Canada can survive a socialist coalition. We don't even have a policy platform from them. Will Jack take Canada out of NATO? Will we get BLOC defense policy and NDP economis? No one knows because they won't say. Harper is a risk. The coaltion is just a whole lot riskier. And once they're in,there are not enough votes to get them out if things go south.

These Liberal attacks are pure desperation. The NDP have plenty of positive experience in government. Ignatieff himself was going around telling people how much he respected the work of the Romanow government in Saskatchewan did. Now that he is under threat his story changes. The facts are, according to stats Canada, that the NDP have the best record of balancing budgets of any party. The Liberals will go on and on about the conservatives using scare tactics, but that is just what they are doing now. Who is two sides of the same coin?

As a western Canadian I have to tell "benjamin" that our differences are not about hating Quebec. It's politicians that make it seem that way. But I can assure you of one thing, there will be no unity in Canada if the 3 left wings partie form a coalition. From our west, all this province wants is the same rights as Quebec.I would be happpy to see Quebec enjoy it's more left leaning form of government. What is wrong in Canada,is that we have a federal governrment system that tries to make all provinces conform to the same ideology. We do not have a mechanism is place that allows for socialism in Quebec, while allowing a more conservatve ideology to exist in Alberta. As to the people, the only sad moment I had during last years Olympics in Vancouver,we when I heard a lady from Quebec express how surprised she was that BC people were so friendly. That should never have happened. We are not evil.We just don't want socialism for our part of the country. I blame the Liberals for this mess.If they had returned to their traditional centris part of the political spectum after they lost the last election, we would all have a free enterpprise option. But no,they went left, and the only free enterpise party on the ballot is the Conservative option. And after 5 years of hate and vitriole in the house,a lot of people just don't like Harper. But for me anyway, this has nothing to do with hating Quebec. It's just not wanting socialism in my province, and still find a way to live in a united Canada.

During an election the voters look to leaders with baited breath to hear from them of how the country will be governed, how are they going to make Canada a better country, what taxes will be levied, the financial direction they will take us , what social programs will be implemented, in general what is their platform and program. The headlines we read here about Iggy is we hear or see none of that. We only read at what party he is levelling his attacks. There is no substance just empty rhetoric, nothing that pertains to good government.

Laytons is the only leader that appears warmest but at the end of day its policy that effects Canadians not the party leader, although in Harper's case honesty and openness towards Canadians is a major problem that will change Canada for the worse, should he gain a majority. Another important factor is past economic record. The NDP have no Federal experience in government, but on the provincial level they have been a disaster. The Conservatives have not balanced the books for over 30 years and each of the years they have been in power they have driven Canada into further debt, in Harper's case $120billion. The last Liberal government had 8 straight years of surpluses and they reduced our national debt by $110billion, while maintaining low unemployment, strong social programs, and during their time Canada was highly respected around the world. If you were hiring a new CEO for your company would you hire someone who had never shown a profit in previous roles, someone who had no experience at all or would you hire someone who had a track record of proven profit building while creating stability within your company. That is the choice we face on May 2nd. I personally would hire the Liberals because they have the best economic track record by far. Learn more about the NDP platform before you get to excited and vote for them, you just might be voting for a Conservative majority if you are not careful.

Recent News - Advance poll numbers soared 34% (so far) from the 2008 election. It will probably be higher as elections Canada is still waiting for more counts. This is a significant increase and it means people want to be heard in a louder voice this time around. This is great! My interpretation of this fact - Harper's right wing regime is soon coming to an end. There is no way this is good for Harper and the Conservatives. History has taught us that the party leading in the polls has the most to lose during an election. Election results are almost always less favorable to the party in government and the party leading in the polls. Look it up and you'll see. No Corporate Tax Cuts ($6 billion) - No $300 million dollar planes ($19.5 billion) - No mega prisons ($12.5 billion). Vote on Election Day - May 2, 2011 - ABC but preferably Liberal.

The Liberal Party of Canada is broke on Three Fronts. Firstly, they are broke by having no vision as to where they want to take this country. Secondly they are broke leadership wise, Mr Ignatieff thinks he is Pierre E. Trudeau. However he is not. Trudeau before he became PM had to win a Liberal nomination in his riding, win a bi election, prove himself as a cabinet minister, and then win a closely contested leadership convetion in 1968, and then win a federal election. Mr Ignatieff thinks he can just sale into the PM job because of being a former Harvard University Professor.Thirdly, the Liberal Party of Canada is broke financially. They have fought 4 elections since 2004 with very little money. Thank Jean Chretien for hobbling the party. So it would be good for the Liberals to spend more time in the opposition benches for 4 or 8 years and rebuild as they had to do after the disaterous leadeship of John Turner.

The NDP is showing gains in the polls but the votes have not been cast yet. The final poll, the only poll that counts, will probably confirm that the polls were wrong. They usually are when change or party fatigue seems to be the apparent theme within the polls themselves. After May 2nd we will all take a step back and wonder what went wrong with the polls. Polls do not take into account voter turnout and by no means guarantee votes will actually be cast. As well, there is a significant element called the ‘undecided votes’. These votes may swing in any direction come Election Day if the voters actually make a choice and go out to vote. Don’t count your seats before they are won. Vote On Election Day – May 2nd, 2011. ABC and I do mean Anything But Conservative. May 2, 2011 Election Predictions CONS/130 seats – LIBS/99 seats – NDP/40 seats – BLOC/39 seats

@Sara, I agree with your short and direct statement: unless we elect a Conservative majority, it'll be back to the voting booth (not to forget another $300 million). If a Conservative minority, can it be that as official Opposition, Jack Layton would be the driving force behind a coalition, and thus a potential PM? If that gets to be the case, we will NEVER get the deficit bills paid! They would legislate everything that moves, and some things that don't. Also, I deeply resent that Iggy calls anyone engaged in the same process as he is, a "boy scout". Very rude, but spoken by a loser munching on sour grapes. The bad part of Jack Layton aligning himself with Quebec's "soft sovereignists" is that there would now be two parties, the Bloc and the NDP, who would throw the few seats in Nfld/Lab to the dogs on the issue of Lower Churchill Falls funding/guarantees. Yes, they would rather say "no" to Nfld/Lab, than lose the potential to retain and grow a much larger group of seats in Quebec. Welcome to Jack Layton, the guy who would sell out any and all parts of the ROC, if it would get him more votes in Quebec. Don't feel bad. He's doing it also to the rest of Canada with his support to reopen divisive constitutional talks (not necessary, legally, it's a "political thing" to win votes), and his commitment to make Canada's bilingualism Act second fiddle to Quebec's Bill 101 (French only, s'il vous plait). I was an NDP supporter up until now. To see the leader of my party sell out to the Quebec element is just wrong. I certainly don't support that nut case Ignatieff so I'm going to vote for Harper, atleast with him I get a Canadian and someone who represents the whole country.

First mistake Liberals made was to bypass the system and install Iggy as their leader. Second is out of every word in every visit Iggy has made, 85% was Harper Bashing..never mentioned Ducepe or NDP, each time he bashes, the numbers go down for Liberals...doesnt take a certificate from Harvard to know somethings amiss..duhhhhhhh. Perhaps if he spent his time giving the advantages of a Liberal Gvt instead of bashing, maybe his numbers would go up. Can you imagine Layton as leader of Liberals? Would be a landslide. Keep it up Iggy, Canadians not falling for you wearing Canuck jerseys and boy scouts? Well, thats one trait you dont have, which is respect. Liberals, you need to act quickly and find an honset cincere leader (Layton type) and even bringing out Chretin was a disasterous move..people dont forget the past. Keep on kicking yourself, the NDP loves it. And desperate Duceppe..calling Parizeau? I wasnt crazy about Layton last election, but he is the only one making any sense! And bullying is only in schools they say? Look at grown men insulting others publicly.. LAYTON ALL THE WAY! Never mind minority..go for majority! Spreading all throught the country...Difference between all parties? They are all human like you and me, but need a strong determined down to earth leader..I can only think of one in the running. Need I say more?

Will GTA save Canada??
said

Centrist Liberals will not allow Layton to turn Canada into a socialist backwater state. I believe they will vote Conservative rather than risk any NDP led coalition. Ontario already knows what a disastrous NDP did to us and we don't want a federal NDP led government. The GTA is the key to saving Ontario and Canada from these socialists.

I bumped into this political "rally" on a rare trip to Canadian Tire this morning. There were only a few people there and the feeling was quite somber. People there seemed troubled by something.

As someone who closely follows Canadian politics I am amazed by what has happened for the NDP during this campaign. The campaign started with much of the media questioning if Jack and the NDP would even survive this campaign, now he has become the golden boy. Frankly the Liberals are an old and very tired party in much need of repair and renewal. I think Jack would make a great leader of the opposition, but I do not think the NDP is ready to govern Canada. Their candidate are not ready, there platform is very ideological and in many places unrealistic. I think what would be a good start would be a Conservative Majority with Layton as Leader of the Opposition. It would give the NDP the chance to utilize their new resources, build on their new found support and put together a team and platform that could perhaps actually govern Canada. One thing Jack needs to do in order to grow from here is make a move to the center in some parts of his platform, specifically Afganistan and foreign policy. None the less this has made this election very interesting to watch.

David Miller, Bob Ray (Torontonians know them) and now Michael Ignatieff and Jack Layton - this bunch of lefties they always go on spending. And where they are getting money to spend? They are all champions of taxes. Michael Ignatieff when it comes to revealing his real agenda to increase the tax burden on Canadians has long admitted his first instinct is to force taxpayers to pay more. He has described himself as a “tax-and-spend, Pearsonian, Trudeau Liberal.” (Toronto Star, Nov. 20, 2004.)

This is just the same Liberal arrogance that has gotten them into trouble before, and it will never change until they rid themselves of the Bob Rae, Ralph Goodale, Ignatieff and several other has beens that are still facing the public.

Without a Harper majority we will have higher taxes, Quebec appeasement, no plan and western alienation. If Jack, Iggy and Duceppe form any kind of coalition our economy will stall when it's just starting to pick up. I moved west when Klien ruled and liked the idea of working and making 2 - 3 times what I was earning back east. The engine that is driving our economy is the "dirty oil" that the 3 amigos plan to pillage if they get into power. Stelmac toyed with the royalities and threw alot of people out of work and we are just recovering. If those idoits can manage to persuade the uninformed that they derseve the right to rule I will be seeking to join and support the separatist cause here. We do not mind sharing the wealth and love our country but enough is enough. The investment will wither under their rule. A socialist model with free everything never works. If we went on our own and kept those billions we would be very comfortable and have 100 or so years to plan for when the oil runs out. Harper is the only one who is sticking to his plan and not bending. Remember he is an economist not a sweet talker but an acceptable statesman.

Iggy really needs to stop this approach. Everytime he says the NDP are not ready to Govern people look and him and realize neither is he.I am not sure what brilliant advisor left over from the Paul Martin days is telling him to say this stuff but he really needs to stop it.he needs to focus more on why he is ready to Govern and not so much on why others are not.

You got a problem with Boy Scouts Iggy? Well of course you would. They stand for things like honor, respect, duty and accomplishing their tasks as set out. Something you would have NO clue about. Maybe the NDP is an un-tried government but if you want to disparage them, at least use an example that makes sense. Do you hear that noise in your head Iggy? Didn't think so, it's empty.

Nice of Ignatieff to refer to Boy Scouts contemptuously. Nothing like deriding a group of volunteers who teach citizenship and respect for the environment to both boys and girls. They never ask for a government handout, they believe in both individual initiative and cooperative effort in the group. They honour their parents, friends, country and nature. They believe in being truthful. No wonder Ignatieff despises them.

How sad. How really sad. We are witnessing the demise of a leader who has not only lost favour with the public but has become so defensive that he will lash out to the NDP with language that is so demeaning and in my view unfair. Boy scouts? Wow. True the NDP may lack the numbers in terms of the "old warriors" but on the other hand, they do offer a fresh, highly energetic alternative that may not form government, unless they align themselves with the Liberals, but nevertheless, a much stronger alternative to the "red book" advocates who rely on old stories. Just listen to this interview - highly defensive and to some extent emotional. What a difference a few weeks can make.

Iggy's ego has finally been shrunken down to appropriate size, and can now rattle around in a thimble. Having to chase after Jack Layton and the NDP, in the final stretch of the campaign, in order to hold his leadership position in the Opposition, is, undoubtedly, something that "Mr. Harvard" never contemplated. Desperate times, Iggy. Desperate times. ("Gee, bringing down the government seemed like such a good idea a few weeks ago.")

Wow, Iggy sounds awfully desperate in knowing that he is neck 'n neck with Taliban Jack. He is really beginning to sound like a whining child who thinks he should win the race by default and is just finding out he is losing. The Liberal Party in this country has worn out it's welcome amongst Canadians, our memories are still so fresh from all the chronyism that went on with Trudeay, Chretien and Martin. Who could ever forget that? Not to forget how they hacked the military budget to nothing, let equipment go outdated and unrepaired and sent them off to fight a war in Afghanistan. Thank goodness they are soon to become a third rate party in this country and I would find it awfully hilarious if they didn't win enough seats to even be classified as an official party in Ottawa. Well the good news is (especially for the economy and the military) is it looks as if Harper just may get another kick at the can with what most likely looks like a minority.

Ignatief is attacking the wrong Party. When it was his own party that tabled the "Contempt Of Parliament", was against the governing Progressive Conservatives in the first place party. He should be focusing his attention at the Conservatives. He's no better than Harper. Pathetic, cynical, and two faced.

In other words, anything the NDP does is unprincipled and their members are foolhardy, unless they support Iggy for PM, in which case the same New Democrats and the same NDP policies are enlightened and integral part of the unified progressive vote. The Liberal Party of Canada: "These are our principles and we are proud to run on them. If you don't like them, we have others..."

These attacks by Ignatieff against the NDP are immature and completely unfounded. He literally shot himself in the foot on this one and because of this, the Liberals will bleed even more votes to the NDP and the Conservatives. Who knows? Perhaps we may end up with an NDP government after all?

I think the left lib media in Canada are the ones trying to make hay out of an NDP led coalition. You guys finally clued in to the fact that Iggy and the LPC are dead in the water now you're jumping ship. Nice try but we're still looking at a Conservative majority in spite of what the left biased media makes up and reports.
