Not washing jeans for 15 months is trendy -- and safe

A University of Alberta student didn't wash a pair of skinny jeans for 15 months and science says the fashion trend is safe, but maybe a tad smelly.

Josh Le wore the same pair of jeans to break in the raw denim, so it would wrap the contours of his body, leaving distinct wear lines.

He had his textile professor test the jeans for bacteria before washing them for the first time.

The results showed high counts of five different kinds of bacteria, but nothing in the range of being considered a health hazard.

Raw denim is not washed or treated when it is manufactured.

A current trend is to wear the dark indigo jeans without washing them to allow the indigo to wear out in the fabric.

After the jeans are washed, they leave a unique pattern based on their owner's body.

Le said some friends were "grossed out" by his experiment, but others thought it was interesting.

"Some people really liked it, but some people were completely grossed out by it," he told The Canadian Press. "I was able to meet a lot more people and have a lot of good conversations. It was like, 'hey, nice jeans."'

When his jeans got a bit funky smelling, Le's solution was to put them in the freezer.

"There were times when it had a bad odour, like in the seventh month," he said. "That's when I threw it in the freezer and magically when it came out it was odourless."

Reminds me of a story from the Levi's archives. Prospector long ago wrote to complain that his newest jeans didnt stand up as well as the last ones .Wore them for ONLY four years this time,he said, and dont think they wore cause I kept taking them off and on. I didnt ....not for four years

Why wear the jeans for 15 months when they could have been warn for two weeks roughing it in the bush to get the same effect. You wouldn't affend anyone with the odor except yourself either.

The very thought of putting on jeans that had been worn daily without being washed for months makes me shudder. The thought of putting on frozen jeans that had not been washed for months is worse though. When something stinks so bad you don't want to wear, next time wash it and don't freeze it!These university students supposedly represent the future of our society. Egad.

Lousy hygiene. Not learning a whole lot in the echelons of upper learning I'd say. How disgusting. I bet his apartment, kitchen and bathroom are just ripe for the picking. GROSS !!

Poor experiment. Growth of hazardous bacteria may have been stunted by putting jeans in the freezer. Also, it's not the type of bacteria that poses a health risk, but rather the concentration. Furthermore, I'm sure there would have been plenty of fungus or other parasites on the jeans, which would give you enough problems! - Ph.D Student, Dept of Pharmacology, UofA

I actually appreciate this survey. I usually rotate several pairs of blue jeans but only wash them every two or three months (sooner if they get dirty). They generally never seem soiled, no strange odors, or anything. But I definitely wouldn't wear the same jeans nearly that many days in a row.

Good job, Josh! I watched the progress of his jeans on Facebook but cool to see the scientific twist he put on his denim. Keep it up bro!

It must have been a slow day for news . What part of any of this is news worthy ?

Whether his pants have harmful germs or not only depends where he have been and sat on. It is nothing to do with how long he has worn it.

Whoa. Settle down there "Phil". Does your PhD happen to be in 'Unwarranted Anger'? This wasn't a funded "study". This kid simply was conducting his own little experiment and asked a favour of his textiles professor to do a simple test out of sheer curiosity, and just for fun. And personally, I found the results to be interesting and humourous... lighten up, would ya?

As per instructions from the manufacturer you only have to wear and wait a year B4 you wash them. I guess he's just lazy, boohoo sniff sniff!

This is fantastic news. Think of all the 'green' implications this could have. Careful not to 'soil' your pants laughing too hard at this piece of news. I hope this doesn't pass for a degree project at U of A. I am usually a little reluctant to wash my jeans for the first time, maybe push a week in the office, but wow, 15 months. I guess I'm not into the 'creased and hugging my body' look.

I'm confused as to why people feel the need to comment on how a scientific finding is useful or not. These are the same people that have cell phones, drive cars, have electricity in their house...yet they mock significant findings all the time.

Josh's head should be examined for excessive cranial bacteria. (First Date: "Once I wore these jeans for 15 months, without washing them, and then I had my textiles professor test them for bacteria... Hey, wait; where are you going?! Please stay!")

This study shows that 15 month old body odour is effective in killing off harmful bacteria. In other news, Wrangler jeans has filed for a patent claiming jeans have antibiotic properties and the FDA has stated that all denim products will require a prescription for purchase.

I would rather use the space on a story that someone saved a life or did a good dead who cares about a small minded fella who has no use for soap !!! Come on people really

Which makes me wonder what kind of jeans they wore since mine wear out very quickly just wearing them once a week (pockets wear out or rips and tears start forming in the denim)

I suspect most people go many, many wearings befor washing their jeans. I certainly don't throw them in the wash after every time I wear them (unless they're soiled). 15 months might be a little excessive though!
