Canada's space cadets: the men and women who slipped Earth's surly bonds

Since 1984, eight Canadian astronauts and one Canadian space tourist have participated in 17 space shuttle missions:
- Oct. 5-13, 1984: Marc Garneau becomes the first Canadian astronaut to travel into space aboard the space shuttle Challenger.
- Jan. 22-30, 1992: Roberta Bondar becomes first Canadian woman and second Canadian astronaut in space in mission aboard the shuttle Discovery.
- Oct. 22-Nov. 1, 1992: Steve MacLean oversees the CANEX-2 set of Canadian experiments on mission aboard the shuttle Columbia.
- Nov. 12-20, 1995: Travelling aboard shuttle Atlantis, Chris Hadfield becomes the first Canadian to travel to the Russian space station Mir. He was also the first Canadian mission specialist.
- May 19-29, 1996: Marc Garneau returns to space aboard the shuttle Endeavour, becoming the first Canadian to take on two such missions.
- Jun. 20-Jul. 7, 1996: Robert Thirsk embarks on a 17-day mission aboard Columbia, the longest space voyage to date for a Canadian astronaut.
- Aug. 7-19, 1997: Bjarni Tryggvason joins a mission aboard Discovery, where he helps test a Microgravity Isolation Mount, which he helped design.
- Apr. 17-May 3, 1998: Aboard shuttle Columbia, Dr. Dave Williams becomes the first non-American medical officer on a space mission. During the mission, he performs 26 experiments studying the effects of microgravity on the nervous system.
- May 27-Jun. 6, 1999: Julie Payette joins the first mission to the International Space Station aboard Discovery.
- Nov. 30, 2000: Marc Garneau returns to space for a third time aboard Endeavour.
- Apr. 19, 2001: Chris Hadfield returns to space to help install the Canadarm 2 on the International Space Station. During the mission, he becomes the first Canadian to perform a space walk.
- Apr. 15, 2005: Robert Thirsk returns to space as a backup flight engineer for a Russian Soyuz mission to the International Space Station.
- Sept. 9, 2006: Steve MacLean returns to space aboard shuttle Atlantis to help with the assembly of the International Space Station. The mission was originally scheduled to take place in 2003, but was postponed when NASA grounded its shuttle fleet in 2003 after the Columbia disaster.
- Aug. 9, 2007: Dave Williams takes part in his second space mission aboard Endeavour, where he performs three space walks.
- May 27, 2009: Robert Thirsk departs from Kazakhstan to begin a six-month stint on board the International Space Station. He serves as crew medical officer and robotics specialist.
- Jul. 15-31, 2009: Julie Payette makes second trip into space aboard Endeavour on a mission to the International Space Station.
- Jul. 17, 2009: Payette's arrival at the space station, where Thirsk is already working, marks the first time two Canadians meet in space.
- Sept. 30, 2009: Cirque du Soleil founder Guy Laliberte becomes the first Canadian space tourist by joining a mission to the International Space Station. Laliberte paid $35 million for the trip, where he promoted global water issues.
