A new eco fee came into effect in Ontario this month, adding charges to thousands of products, including dish soap, light bulbs, paints and pharmaceuticals.

The new fee quietly came into effect on July 1, the same day as the Harmonized Sales Tax.

The long list of products includes aerosol containers, fire extinguishers, fluorescent tubes, syringes and needles, and all toxic, corrosive and flammable products.

Eco fees were brought in to ensure products are collected, recycled, reused or disposed of in an environmentally friendly manner.

The fees are set by manufacturers or retailers who are required to pay the province for recycling their products. However, some companies are passing the cost onto consumers.

Eco fees range from a few cents to several dollars, depending on the product. For example, the rate for batteries is based on weight.

Stewardship Ontario -- the agency overseeing eco fees -- is quick to insist the fee is not a tax. Rather, it should be considered a levy.

However, the provincial Conservatives say the government is using the fees as a tax grab, adding the province should have done more to let people know the fees were coming.

"They snuck it through," said Nepean-Carleton MPP Lisa MacLeod. "Mr. McGuinty didn't advertise this tax grab because he knew he could sneak it under the radar when the HST hit, and consumers would be none the wiser."

The first phase of eco fees were introduced on July 1, 2008. The fees go to various stewardship councils across the province to ensure hazardous materials don't end up in landfills.

If the provincial conservatives are yelling "tax grab" again, than it's clear the environment is not one of the items on their agenda.

Thanks for advising that fire extinguishers are one of the many products to be hit with this greedy tax grab. I need a new fire extingusher and I will buy it in the U.S. . . like I have been doing with everything else since McLiar was re elected.

As for Dalton, this guy just keeps sticking it to us over and over and over again. Never have we had such a political leader that lied and screwed us over time and time again.

Who is it that is voting for him. Teachers? Nurses? Firefighters? The rest of the white collar unions?

Am I wrong? Who will still vote for this clown?

Comments for the above please?

Come on people! Settled down. In a couple of months you'll have forgotten and they'll just come up with another one. Look at it this way, they're getting rid of people by forcing our kids to ride in the steets and get killed. It will take money to replace what they're not going to get from them! Might as well move somewhere where we make $0.50 an hour and be poor. "MY GOD" I just realized this is what we're left with after all the taxes anyway. Soory, I retract my last statement; let's stay here, be poor anyway, but save on moving costs.

Is there any way we can rid of McGuinty now? By the end of the term the province will be in complete ruins as well on the way now.

If anyone knows a way lets get it going now!

Personally I guess I can go to the States or Quebec to buy things. That should help our economy even more.

Once again, McLiar screws the residents of Ontario by imposing another form of taxation. He offically becomes the most despised politican in the province's history..Tax and spend McGuinty strikes again..Soon we will all be on welfare ...

I have no problem paying for the disposal of these types of items to ensure they don't end up in the landfill but where do I bring them to ensure that? Is the retailer going to accept them?
Now you know why the minimum wage was increased. Is it a coincidence that the final increase was March 31, 2010 and 3 months later we have a new tax and a new "levy"? They didn't do anyone any favours.

So they snuck another tax grab in,the way i read it. Eco fees were brought in to ensure products are collected, recycled, reused or disposed of in an environmentally friendly manner.

I wonder does this mean that the consumer can take the empty containers back to where they purchased for recycling, since we did pay for the service. If not then we should not have to pay.I would like to see a follow up story on this question!

How can we let McGuinty get away with this? It's bad enough he pushed his HST on us and now this? Nothing was even mentioned about it!!!

If you ask me, I can't wait until the next election. Hopefully the people of this province are smart enough to cast votes agaist this tax grabbing moron.

What is really interesting about this issue is that their are many people in Ontario who consider themselves environmentalists doing their part to help save the planet........until they have to pay for it and can see that on a bill. When costs are hidden, it is easy to be an environmentalist because it is someone else's issue; all you have to do is verbalize support. When you have to pay for it the cost of responsibility hits home.

The McGuinty Liberals are now reaching the point where taxes will become regressive, costing more than they bring in. The cost of being an environmentalist is going to go up as a result.

Finally! Now that I'm paying the eco fee I can start throwing all of these items straight into the garbage instead of taking the time to dispose of/recycle them properly like I do today. Thank you, Dalton-- you lying, cheating, sneaky weasel. You've just saved me some time!

Remember folks, its not a tax. Good Ol' Dalton wouldn't raise or create any new taxes!

Although I normally hate Lisa MacLeod, I fully agree with her.

I think its time we all went McGuinty a message, its time to get out of politics.

Lets recall and fire all teh liberals in ontario. if not, lets ask for an election. Lets take this tax to a vote. HST and Eco fee depending on the product could be as high as 20.5%. Yes HST is charged on top of the ecofee. Tax on a tax.

Regardless of its name 'tax' or 'levy' the consumer still has to pay for it. If it weren't for the media, guess we would never know about these added costs. Maybe we should go back to basics and making our own cleansers by using vinegar and baking soda. Shsh someone will get the idea to tax these also. JC

Slipped it in , where was the media? I will have to cancel many things soon.just to afford the basics. like groceries. oh well the first to go will be cable with the HST.
the phone with the HST
what about extra heat in the winter. I will just use more blankets. I could go on, but it would sound like a broken record. Stand up Ontario and see the light

Eco fee?

Give me a break. It is a tax grab.

I'd say something nasty right now about those government swine, but I have to figure out how I'm going to earn a bit of spare cash.

They should charge an Eco Tax on McGuinty's lies. They are clearly pollutants, and he keeps sending them out.

Bubba says Screwed Again by McGuinty

Everyone knows we are already paying this in our Income Taxes, so this is yet another tax increase by the McGuinty Liberals.

I have a question for everyone out there. Is there anyone who is going to vote Liberal Provincially next year? If so, ARE YOU NUTS! Sorry, my anger, and frustration overcame me. At least it was free, as in no charge.

I think we should have to pay for our votes. If you want to vote Conservative, you pay $100 for your ballot. If you want to vote Liberal, you pay $1.00...oh sorry, I lied(like McGuinty), it will really cost you $10,000 , but we won't call it a tax, so that's ok.

I don't know what McGuinty could say when he starts campaigning next year. He could say "I'm not lying to you now", but that could be a lie. Or he could say "I was lying to you before, but I'm telling you the truth now", but would that also be a lie? If you are confused now, then think about how confused you'll be when his lips begin to move.

McGuinty is a two time liar, maybe even three times if you count the fiasco about the G20 Fence issue.

What do you think?

Coincidence?
said

Seriously?? Coincidence with the Hst too? Nothing happens by surprise everything is planned for, This was planned for without anyone knowing to follow the HST and very soon i assure you something else will happen, The way things are going i FAIL TO SEE how any of these changes are going to help people survive at all, Unemployment, wages are low, prices are going higher.... do the math, 1 + 1 = 2 , Low wages + Increase in prices = Survival of the rich only......

Your Ontario Liberal government at work once again. If there's a way to tax you these guys will do it. Eco "fees" and health "premiums" only from a Liberal government.

As a card carrying Conservative, I am more pissed that the opposition parties didn't bring this to our attention long before July 1st. I expect my representative to work hard to root out this sort of crap before it's too late, and not just grandstand after the fact.

I realize you have all been preoccupied with the HST for months, but come on, this started 2 years ago. What are we paying you for anyway? Just to bitch? Sorry, we can all do that for free, you are adding nothing to the debate.

Why does this surprise anyone? And why weren't the NDP and the Tories talking about these new eco fees? When I inquired at Canadian Tire what these fees were, they said it was a new tax imposed by the Fiberals. Interesting to read here that it is actually imposed by the retailers themselves to cover their "recycling costs". I just returned from the US on a business trip. I bought a lot of stuff there and will continue to do as much shopping there as possible. I hope the retailers enjoy disposing of stuff that they are not collecting fees from me for.

Me9999

I agree with the new Ecotax. These materials need to be disposed in a more environmentally friendly manner. This not a tax grab. Whatever is better for the environment, I'm in 100% support behind it.

Come on people, where have you been? Wake up!
The Eco fee has been in place on many items for at least 2 years.
Paint, oil, oil filters, paint thinner, etc etc.

How many of you know about the Advanced disposal fee? That came into effect over 1 year too!

All controlled by The Stewardship of Ont.

I'm totally shocked that the Tory's and the NDP are acting so shocked about what they're calling a NEW tax. Have they been sleeping in the house or maybe they have never looked at receipt over the past 2 years when they got their oil changed or bought paint.

Ask anyone of us in retail how on a daily basis we have to explain it and take abuse over it.

Stop complaining to us and tell the people that are trying very hard to act dumb about it. IE: the politians.

This is ridicules. How these companies can do anything stopping hazardous material not to end in land fields. This is just extra money for some. Who will audit the agency "Stewardship Ontario" for the money consumers are paying?
So tax after tax and we should be happy about all these?
Seem Ontario’s Government well planning to tax people and waste the money or make some people rich? What dose is going on? They are sliding extra charges and no one can do anything?
