Microsoft forcing the switch from XP to Vista

MONTREAL — Consumers buying personal computers in the coming months will likely end up with Microsoft's reputation-bruised Windows Vista operating system instead of the older XP system, whether they like it or not.

As of June 30, Microsoft will no longer ship Windows XP to retailers and to hardware companies that make PCs, forcing an eventual switch to Vista. "Does that mean (XP) will instantly disappear off the shelves or off PCs? No," said Microsoft Corp. Canada's Elliot Katz.

"Inventories have to clear for hardware manufacturers, inventories have to clear at retail," said Katz, senior product manager for Windows clients.

Windows Vista came out in January 2007, but Katz said Microsoft has left the XP line in the marketplace longer than it intended due to consumer demand.

"That's because our consumers were asking us to do so," he said.

"The very typical situation is when any kind of change is introduced, people are reluctant to change."

Windows XP was introduced to consumers on Dec. 31, 2001, and has found much more favour among computer users than its newer cousin over its lifetime. The InfoWorld information technology website hosts an online petition to save it and extend it beyond the June 30 deadline.

Volleys of criticism have been launched at Vista with its performance and security being taken to task on tech blogs and in news articles.

Apple has used this to its advantage with its "Get A Mac" ads that have poked fun at Vista for such things such as its security prompts.

U.S.-based analyst Michael Silver said Vista gives consumers "a pretty good experience" but that message seems to be lost.

"At this point, we think Vista's reputation is worse than the product is, actually," Silver said from New York.

The debate between Microsoft's Vista and XP operating systems ends up giving Apple's Mac "something to gloat about," said Silver, who's with Gartner Inc., an information technology research and advisory company.

Katz said Vista offer feature improvements such as better security to protect photos and videos, strengthened parental controls and the ability to make high-definition movies.

Window XP support ends on April 14, 2009, he said. Security updates for Windows XP will continue to be made available, as necessary, until April 8, 2014.

A computer operating system is the interface between the hardware and the software. It interprets software requests and is the key to making the hardware operate.

Among the most popular on today's desktop computers are Microsoft's Windows family, Apple's Mac OS and Linux.

An operating system can also help make a computer user friendly. For example, you put in a DVD and the operating system enables you to view what's on the DVD and watch it on your computer screen.

Eric Lancheres, whose business repairs computers for consumers and enterprises, said when Vista was first introduced it was often installed on older computers.

"People installed it on machines that were not able to run it properly," Lancheres, owner of Computer Repair Montreal.

"A lot of people had a lot of inconveniences, bugs, and it ran a bit slower," he said.

It's the Vista security feature called User Account Control (UAC) that has generated criticism and Katz acknowledged it causes "a little inconvenience."

"It's just verifying that the website you want to go to, or the application you want to install, or the change that you want to make to the operating system is something you want to do intentionally. Once you've had your PC running for a little bit, those prompts and those messages no longer pop up."

Lancheres called Vista's security prompts "exceedingly annoying" and said people usually try to disable them right away or "dismiss" Vista as an operating system because of them.

Silver said he thinks Microsoft hasn't made it clear enough what sets Vista apart from XP.

"It's really not coming through to people what the benefits are," said Silver, who's with Gartner's client computing group.

"It's hard for Microsoft to quantify something like better security, or even explain it, because so much of it is buried deep in the operating system.

"Microsoft has spent a lot of money advertising Vista and most folks really can't say what those commercials were or what they were about, or identify them."

The Redmond, Wash., software giant has run "See the Difference" and "Wow" themed commercials to promote Vista's new features.

Katz said Microsoft has sold about 140 million copies of Vista.

Microsoft is working on its next version of Windows, which is expected to reach the consumer marketplace in 2010.

Been running Vista for about a year, first couple of months, warning after warning, but now the pop-ups have all but disapeared, and I've never gone this long before without the need to re-install. I think Vista is great, requires little or no maintenance and the only time I get warnings is if I'm trying to install a new program. I'm ok with that!

There's a better solution. I use eComStation which is a modernized version of OS/2. With software like Firefox and OpenOffice, it still performs all the tasks I need it to, and it doesn't need bleeding edge hardware to run.

Already switched to a Mac.... Love it! Much nicer interface, better than Vista and runs that one Windows app (accounting software) that I need that is not available natively in Mac using Parallels Desktop. My recommendation? Switch to a MAC!!

Oh lord, here comes another one...

I have a powerful enough computer to run Vista and I chose not to. I took off Vista and installed XP instead. It was just a matter of comfort, but also a matter of being able to perform even the simplest of functions.

Granted support will continue for a few more years, as will updates if need be, but I'm thinking, what the heck! I learned Windows 95, Windows 98, ME, and XP, I can learn Linux too!

I work in the IT industry (programmer analyst) so I am very familiar with all the Operating Systems out there (intel's, unix's, mainframe's etc). Each one of them has their issues. But I can tell you the 'security features' in Vista are REDICULOUS !

I personally still run Windows 98 SE on my old PC and it runs beautifully, even with on older browser - and best of all hardly any virus's to worry about! Boy am I going to be upset to get a new PC... maybe I will go to Linux... I think for the average person who just has a PC to 'surf the net' and 'download music' they really don't need all this security with Vista. What is the worst that can happen if you loose all your music after all... I was just discussing with a co-worker the new upgrade we are doing for our email system and all the new bells and whistles that come with it.... We don't use 90% of features that come with the current release! Sheesh more is not better.

I take it no one remembers that they absolutely hated XP when it was released? That they pretty much said the same stuff then?

Having worked IT for more years than I'll admit I've heard these complaints so many times that they've become just so much 'white noise' and meaningless.

Get over it or come up with some new matterial... the current complaints are kinda old and boring.

VISTA is great. Instally recognizes my network, memory sticks, external drives, MP3 player.

Never any issues.

Note to all naggers complainers - upgrade your old 486 system. VISA likes lots of speed. 2001 is a long time ago.

For the last few years, even before I heard about vista, I've been trying to switch completely over to Linux, Fedora to be specific. Ever since the first time I tried using vista, I vowed to switch completely over to Linux and never again use vista if possible, at least for personal use. It's true that newer operating systems always use more resources than the previous one, when you're running windows operating systems anyway. Linux is generally very good with resources. Linux has it's own neat little tools/programs, and it's also got one called wine that allows you to run lots of windows programs. Whether your just a home user or running a server and everything, Linux is usually awesome.

The next time I buy a computer it'll be built from scratch where I'll have XP installed from my disc as opposed to buying retail with that horrible VISTA installed.

All I can say, those Apple ads are 100% correct. I had a PC for the longest time, finally when it crash to the point of no return, I bit the bullet and bought an Apple. I will NEVER go back to a PC EVER. LONG LIVE APPLE COMPUTERS, DOWN WITH MICROSOFT!!!!

If all they're going to sell is computers with Vista, they won't be selling a whole lot of computers.

I've had a mac with osx for years. I could never understand why people are so PC happy anyway, Mac Rules!

1. type MsConfig from Run option.
2. In System Configuration window, click on the Tools tab.
3. Scroll down and locate “Disable UAP” or “Disable UAC” option item. Click on that line.
4. Click the Launch button.
5. A command prompt window will open and automatically execute and run certain process to disable UAC.
6.Close CMD window when done.
7. Close Msconfig.
8. Restart computer for changes to apply and effective.
9. To re-enable UAC, simply select “Enable UAP” or “Enable UAC” instead of “Disable UAP” or “Disable UAC”, and then click on Launch button.

Why is MS working on a "new" version when they can't get the old one to work? Next time, I'm checking out the Macs first.

Vista is just not worth it! XP is fine for now. I don't need something that takes up double the resources, has really annoying features you can't turn off, and don't want to spend the money on the OS or hardware upgrades. What's the point? Especially when the next version is coming in 2010.

1..You can't move XP to a new computer, it's "locked" into the old.
2..A windows computer essentially pays for the operating system because it's loaded up with AOL adds and such. (ie: Dell Computers) So buy one, put Ubuntu (linux) on it , and run those annoying windows apps that can't be replaced under Wine. And if microsoft complains, hey ! This machine has a windows liscense , bugger off ! (heh heh heh)
3... Last time windows upgraded to a new operating system , they issued patches that essentially sabataged the old one and forced you to upgrade. So , turn off that automatic upgrade !

uhm, they are planning to release another windows version in 2010? Meaning it's already in development before windows vista even fixed.

Windows vista has millions of bugs, i've run it on top of the line systems with 8 gigs of ram quad core sli setup and can't even use a DVI setup because vista has issues with the hardware even with nvidias updates.

Microsoft should fix their problems with the product before releasing it let alone deciding to make another one.

All i can say is software giant gone crazy over profits. They don't care how much it costs the end user to run vista since now everone has to have a PC with at least 2 gigs of ram to run smooth and running it on anything less then a dual core is stupid

The I.T. industry has refused to embrace Vista. In order for it to replace XP in the business environment, PC hardware will have to be upgraded in order for it to run half decently. Plus, it is still not even compatible with Windows Servers (ver. 2003) - Group Policy is a mess! I predict that until the technicians that have to support Vista embrace it - XP will be around for a long time to come (Microsoft recently announced continued support of XP until 2012).

I had a bizarre XP failure a couple of years ago. The file that got corrupted was part of "System Restore". I decided to switch to Linux and looking back, see the failure as a good thing. For Web development, Linux Fedora Core is far more useful and convenient than Windows and other Microsoft products. If you need "Text to Columns" for Openoffice.org "Calc" you can get that and other addons from the Internet. You can even put your favourite flavour of Linux on a memory stick. I have no idea why more people have not caught on to this.

It's not that bad... I've used just about every OS out there and Vista is a bit of a ressource hog but not THAT bad. New OSs always use up more ressources anyways, just like Win 98 and 95 and XP didi before it, Vista uses more ressources than its predecessors.

MAC has done a good job of convincing people that Vista is horrible but I've had it since about 1 month after it came out... only had one problem (wireless kept disconnecting when my brother was next to me with his laptop) and they fixed it with Vista Service Pack 1. Many crashes have also been due to poor drivers from the video card making companies, especially nVidia... that should get better, especially if MS stops selling XP.

Well I have used both operating systems and Vista is garbage. Gates should not have the right to force something down the consumers throats they don't want.
Apples ads are enough of a warning what Vista isn't (good). Gates is getting too big for his britches and should be told he cannot do away with something the public wants to use instead of this clumsy, slow, conflicting Vista. His own built in email program doesn't even work properly. Office 2007 which is suppose to be compatable with Vista isn't as Outlook won't work correctly as an email client.
Maybe it is time for us all to switch to a MORE expensive Apple or start using Linux which is a free O/S with no licensing issues. If you reformat and re-install windows more than twice on a licensed copy that you purchase at the store you have to phone Microsoft for a new CD KEY. That is crap especially if you have a legal licensed version.
Gates has brought computers and software a long way BUT it is time he stopped dictacting to the consumer!

The Knocks Vista has taken really boils down to really bad press.

I have been using it for 2 + years now, and my only issues have been NVIDIA driver issues. (Which happen to be the biggest linux problem also)

Some OEM's blew it by installing so much Trial ware on there systems, some of which was not even Vista compatible. But Sony Dell, they learnt from that.

Here is what the press does not say.

As a percentage of installed based Vista has had the highest conversion rate of any OS. Meaning more people switched to VISTA then any other OS in the past, IE 98 to XP.

I'm not waiting to 2010 for a new version of the Windows OS. If they wanna make it impossible to buy XP I'm just going to download a cracked version... Simple as that. When corporations get controlling and greedy, digital piracy will set us free.

I recently got a new laptop with sufficient memory and CPU power to run Vista - as long as you have a powerful enough computer, Vista runs great and I like some of the new features Microsoft put in.

Much of the early criticism of Vista was because people were trying to run it on machines that didn't have the sufficient requirements for Vista to run smoothly.

Norm
said

This isn't an issue for me or others. The PC I'm using today came with XP and I'll just put it on my new one. There will still be support for XP for years to come and by then, Vista will be gone. Simple

Mac wins, I have been involved with computers since the 80's. I have learned colbol, turbo pascal, dos, all the windiows up to vista. I will never buy another none mac computer again as it is a pain every 3 or 4 years learning a new operating system.(let alone paying $700 or $800 for the latest greatest bug filled o.s. out there) micro-soft did a great job killing it's coustomer base. I think I'll by the first computer a abbacus.

Has Microsoft completely lost their minds? Their actions represent a blatant abuse of their monopoly power, as well as a complete disregard for the demands of consumers. Since Vista does not have any significant benefits over XP, then consumers should not be forced to upgrade.

Then again, this represents a real shame, since Linux will not become a mainstream desktop OS anytime soon and Apple still refuses to support Mac OS X on non-Apple hardware. If they did, then perhaps Microsoft will be forced to clean up their act and give consumers a product they would be willing to upgrade.

I've already upgraded the laptop that I bought a few months ago from Vista to XP. It now runs noticeably faster and is much more enjoyable to work with.

I would have thought that Microsoft would have learned its lesson with Windows ME but obviously not. Let's hope that they get the next OS right. If not, Apple will be laughing all the way to the bank.

That's one of the reason's I bought a Mac, and there will be no looking back. I will never buy another PC.

I skipped over the whole Vista thing, and have been using Ubuntu Linux for nearly three years! If all you are doing is listeing to music and surfing the internet, it is more than adequate. On my laptop, running Vista makes it so hot that I cannot have it on my lap, while with Linux, it runs much cooler and is faster. I just wish that computers didn't come with Vista by default to allow you the option to choose your operating system. Maybe Microsoft would be forced to make a better product if it wasn't the default and had some actual competition.

Vanessa C
said

I'll never use Windows as an OS again. Going to Linux, it's more stable and it's a lot easier to install and use than before. Microsoft blew it - they rush things out without proper testing and they know it. They are stopping Xp for one reason and one reason only - no one is buying Vista. Too many problems, requires too much of an upgrade or a new PC, and the cost. Go free.

Windows XP has been an exceptional operating system, hopefully the new 2010 version of Windows is equal to the task, rather than the Vista version.
Microsoft has been good sofar, but lately there seem to be signs that their reputation is slipping.

"Once you've had your PC running for a little bit, those prompts and those messages no longer pop up."

And how long does that take? I've had my laptop for over 6 months now, and I still get those stupid pop-ups! What's worse, is I get them even when a Microsoft product tries to launch or run something. So, I'm to understand that Windows Vista doesn't even trust Microsoft products?

I think he was pushed to take matters into his own hands. I have a teenage son and if he was involved with a drug dealer I would be furious and try anything to save him like this father did for his daughter. Why do police often say they can't do anything until it's too late? Whether it be a drug dealer or an abusive spouse, the police can't seem to do anything until something really bad happens. In this case they could have raided the drug dealers home and arrested him. The whole town knew what was going on in that house but yet the police chose to do nothing.
