About 2,400 soldiers from throughout the NATO forces paid tribute to Trooper Karine Blais in a ramp ceremony Tuesday, as the Canadian's body was carried aboard a waiting aircraft at Kandahar Airfield.

Blais, 21, is only the second Canadian woman to die in combat since the Afghan mission began.

She was killed Monday when the armoured vehicle she was travelling in rolled over an improvised explosive device. Four others were wounded by the blast, which occurred in the Shah Wali Khot district, north of Kandahar city.

Blais was with the 2nd Battalion of the Royal 22nd Regiment Battle Group -- the famed Quebec regiment nicknamed the Van Doos -- based at Canadian Forces Base Valcartier, near Quebec City.

Lt.-Col. Jocelyn Paul of the Royal 22nd said the explosion happened on a secondary road that was recently patrolled.

In a statement released Tuesday morning in Kandahar, Brig.-Gen. Jonathan Vance described Blais as an energetic soldier who gave "100 per cent to every challenge she faced."

Vance said Blais demonstrated qualities of a future leader, adding she had a "unique sense of humour" and that she was respected by all members of her squadron.

"This young woman's life did not go to waste," said Vance. "Her life was lost in the pursuit of peace and stability."

The injured soldiers were airlifted to a military hospital at Kandahar airfield. Two of the soldiers were being treated by medical personnel and two have been released. The wounded soldiers have not been identified.

Paul said the four injured soldiers are "doing well" but that their injuries are serious.

Later Tuesday, Blais death was on the minds of all soldiers at a ceremony marking her regiment's succession as the lead battle group in Afghanistan.

The Royal 22nd succeeds the 3rd Royal Canadian Regiment of Petawawa, Ont.

Lt.-Col. Roger Barrett, commanding officer of 3 RCR Battle Group, said Tuesday that the morale of soldiers has not been affected despite the Canadian causalities.

"There is a time to grieve and that time happens when a tragedy happens," Barrett told reporters in Kandahar Tuesday.

"After that, we must stiffen our resolve, we must move forward with increased determination to get the job done."

Reaction

In a statement, Prime Minister Stephen Harper said Tuesday that Canadians are extremely proud of Blais and her honourable service.

"It is with utmost sorrow that I extend my condolences, and those of all Canadians, to the family and loved ones of Trooper Karine Blais...," Harper said.

"I also hope for the quick and full recovery of the four other Canadian soldiers injured in the attack."

Gov. Gen. Michaelle Jean said she was "deeply saddened" to hear of Blais' death.

"Our soldiers risk their lives answering the call of duty by working shoulder to shoulder with a people who for decades have been left idle and subjected to terror, intimidation, insecurity and barbarous confrontations on a daily basis," Jean said Tuesday in statement.

Blais leaves behind her mother Josee, her grandmother Laurette and her brother, Billy. The family released a statement Tuesday, in which they said they supported her work in the military.

"Despite the terrible news of her sudden passing, Karine achieved her challenge. She wanted to be part of this adventure. She was proud to serve in Afghanistan. She often asked her mother: 'Mom, are you proud of me?'" said the family.

"Yes, we remain proud of you, despite our sadness."

But before that statement, Blais' godfather criticized the Afghanistan mission and said it's time for Canada to pull out of the country.

"I am against it. I was against it and I am even more against it today. I wonder what we're doing there," Blais told CTV News.

"I knew the Russians couldn't win over there so I don't think the Canadian army could win over there. I was more in favour of the blue helmets, peacekeeping missions, not front-line missions."

Mario Blais said his goddaughter was living with a man, also in the army, and that the two planned to buy a house together.

Capt. Nichola Goddard of the 1st Regiment of the Royal Canadian Horse Artillery was the first Canadian female to die in the mission. Goddard was killed in a grenade attack in the Panjwaii district, west of Kandahar city, on May 17, 2006.

Canada has lost 117 military personnel in Afghanistan since the mission began in 2002. Of that number, the majority have died from roadside bomb blasts.

Our troops are doing their best and we need to support them during this most difficult time. Conventional armies do not do well with terrorists, and we not care what the world says, justice must be swift and decisive.....set standards and provide support and training and then leave ,,,they need to assume the responsibilty of their destiny and we must move on as well.

I look at your picture and I see a beautiful young woman, the face of a baby who is barely filling her uniform. It breaks my heart to think of how your family must be feeling right now. Thank you to you and my sincerest condolences to your family.
Being aboriginal I would like to express a warrior's prayer:
"A true warrior comes to you my ancesters as straight as an arrow fired into the sun.
Welcome her and make a space for her around your council fire. Give her a blanket for warmth and food for nourishment as she has travelled far from home and has proven she is a true warrior who has given herself so others are safe. When her family looks up into the night sky give them comfort in knowing that around one of those twinkling stars sits their daughter at a council fire and she is among her own."

Every time a courageous soldier loses their life, public outpouring of sympathy falls into place and this time is no different.

Trooper Karine Blais was an exemplary soldier who served her family, friends, city, province and country well and she was going to make a difference in Afghanistan.

May Karine rest in peace knowing that although she was only in Afghanistan for a short time, her contribution was being felt.

To her family and friends, stand proud as you have a hero for a daughter and one to be extremely proud of.

Paul you made some really good points and unfortunately ignorance is bliss since I still see negative blogs.

My brother did two tours over there. He didn't have to. He is not in the military but they needed his specialized knowledge and experience. He has only spoken of the amazing respect that he has for our military men and women. How much needed we are there and the difference we are making in other peoples lives.

It truly is a shame that we have lost another soul. It breaks my heart of another loss but if we pull out now their deaths and the pain of the injured will have had no meaning.

How do you feel having your boss saying what you are doing is of no use etc etc. being totally negative. That is what you are doing to them. Except they can be ducking bullets while this is in their head. Stop the BS and support or people or be quiet.

You are putting our people at risk. Or is that what you want?

God bless her soul.

No one wants to see our soldiers killed, least of all us. We have three of our family in the Canadian forces. Two have been to Bosnia, Kosovo, Kabul and now Kandahar. We thank them every day. Each time a soldier dies in the line of duty, it reminds me of the faces of the veterans I have met over my many years. Each one's eyes told the tale of serving their country. The thrill that they were doing something important, and very useful in defending the freedoms that their fathers and forefathers had served to protect. Yet, each veteran also had a sadness in their eyes that told of the ultimate sacrifice that they had experienced or witnessed. Each had a story to tell of heroism, bravery, and sacrifice that helped mold and shape our world today. I would say that if you asked each veteran if the sacrifice and effort put forth was worth it, the overwhelming response would be positive. We still haven't learned to settle our diversity without conflict. Until we do learn that war yields no winners, sacrifice, duty, valor, and bravery will be necessary to defend what we deem as important. To the men and women who are currently serving in defense of our freedoms, you have been handed a very important gauntlet. One that was handed to many of your fathers, grandfathers, and great grandfathers. You have shown your ability to accept the challenge, talk the talk, and walk the walk. Thank you for your sense of honor, duty, and defense of our freedoms. To those families who have suffered loss from the conflict in Afghanistan, my condolences. I would only say that your sons and daughters were doing what they thought was very important. Nuff said.

Afghanistan is, as it has been for the last 900 years, a backward, basket case.
As politically incorrect as it might be to say--what all Canadians and everybody else in the modern, civilized world is now saying--we are dealing with cruel, killing people living in medieval times, who will all joyously kill their wives, children, on a whim, or even someone who steals a loaf of bread.
Bring them into this century? Never. Never. It has never worked before, and it will not work now, or ever.
In a year, Canada will do what Russia, and countless countries have done for centuries and centuries:
Walk away from these primitive desert dummies.
But, I fear, more and more young Canadian kids will be blown to bits by roadside bombs to try to enlighten and help a nearly cave-age people who all relish, and will revert to, killing even if we sink 100 billions dollars into that lunatic country and hand those medieval people 1 million Canadian lives.

It's getting harder and harder to take this kind of news.Just like the other 117 times Canadians have sacrificed their lives in Afghanistan, the loss of this young woman will have me in tears for days.

God Bless you Trooper Katrina Blais.I am humbled by your courage and stand in awe of you,and those who serve with you.To give your life to benefit others is a concept most of us will probably never truly be able to relate to.Like those who you stood with, you will forever be remembered as one of the finest people to ever grace this nation.

And,at the risk of being called to callous,or to political,I do re-think my position on this mission EVERY DAY.I pray to God that those who are serving there now,and those who have fallen, are being straight forward when they say they support this mission.I place far more value in what they say,and how they carry out their duties, than I do in the words of any political party, any of our MP's,or anyone who justs sits around spewing out partisan political rhetoric every day.

God speed,my friends. And please, keep us posted, and try to stay safe. This nation loves each and every one of you.

We may not agree with them but that is their choice. Trooper Karine Blais, you will be missed. in the language of the Cree, or any other Aboriginal language. Time to bring out soldiers home. Afghanistan is a country that will never adopt our values with respect to human/women's rights. It doesn't make sense for our soldiers to be dying while defending such conflicting values.

Besides, the initial objective of replacing the Taliban government with one that would permit the huge oil pipeline has been achieved (not everyone is gullible enough to think this was about Bin Laden).

Trooper Karine Blais was where she wanted to be. Trooper Karin Blais had voluntarily gone to the sound of the guns because she believed in what she was doing. She believed so much in what Canada is doing in Afghanistan, in fact, that she gave her life for it. And, she's not the only one. Virtually every single soldier who serves in Afghanistan, including my son, come back believing in the mission more than ever. They talk of the incredible cruelty of the Taliban, and they talk of the overwhelming support the citizens of Kandahar Province give them. And, virtually all want right back into the fight once they return home.

Yet, on these pages, are those who want to "bring them home" and call their work "Bush's War". Do these selfish, narrow-minded, isolationist and pathetic Canadians not realize how utterly they insult our soldiers, and in this case Trooper Karine Blais.

If these nay-sayers truly cared one smidge for our soldiers, they would at least consider what those same soldiers have to say ... and especially what their opinions are after "being there".

Those who use this thread to push their "bring them home" bias, besmirch and insult the memory and sacrifice of Trooper Karin Blais. They should save their “opining” for when the actual “merits” of the mission are the topic. Soldiers hate ... absolutely hate being treated like victims or felons. Please stop insulting them by bringing your politics into the debate at this time ... when most decent people simple want to admire and honour Trooper Karine Blais.

If we remain, we must continue to the last. If the decision is to withdraw and let the Afghans work out their future for themselves, then we should place a complete interdiction or cordon between Afghanistan and the rest of the world so as to contain the violence.

If the want to be barbarians, let them do so in their own land, and not export it elsewhere.

Another beautuful young Canadian robbed of her life in the quagmire of tribalism, war lords, and total corruption. So ironic in the same week that a female Afgan activist was killed and the government legalized rape within marriage..also rememberance to the 4 wounded. No wonder other NATO nations refused Obama's request for troops. She was a Canadian soldier. From the time Canada became a country and through the last century up until today, Canadian soldiers have always been looked upon as the worlds best and bravest.
Today we should recognize our troops and honour Karine Blais and the other 116 fallen in Afghanistan and realize they are the best! My condolences to the Blais family and the rest of the faimlies and freinds who have lost loved ones.
This is not a day to let resentment and anger criticize the mission and the powers that be.
Today let us love one another. God Bless.
P.S. criticize tomorrow.

The cowards have taken a "Soldier" who believed in what she was doing and they don't care. I do care and I will support the troops every way I can. The Cowards hide behind women and children to protect themselves which is how they have lasted so long. We need to put our morals behind us until this Evil is ended and our Soldiers can't do that if we the public and our Government ties the hands that need to fight fire with fire. God Bless You Trooper Blais.

So sad to see another of our brave soldiers killed in action. I think it's time to pull them out. We have lost so many young men and women over there and it seems to be getting worse not better. I can't see how you can change people who don't want change.

How brave is Trooper Blais is!
She passed away with the greatest honour a soldier can ever receive. Her sacrifice is untouchable. The afghan nation owes her family a debt of honour for all time.
I served for 12 years, and I never faced anything near to what she had to face! I will tell my children about her. No one will ever be forgotten!

The tide recedes, but leaves behind, bright seashells in the sand,
The sun is gone, but gentle warmth, still lingers on the land.
The music's done, but echoes on, in all its sweet refrains,
For with every joy that passes, something beautiful remains.
Thank you for your bravery and sacrifice. Rest in Peace.

Being a former member of Royal Canadian Regiment and being only 37, I am so glad that I am no longer in the Forces. I went in because I believed what we were doing as peace keepers, but now, we're not. We have no right to be there. Our government is sending our friends, family, and children into a place that we should never be. It's not peace keeping, it's war. It's the Bush's war. No one else's. It's time to bring everyone home. I hope you're reading Mr. Harper.

My thoughts are with all the people who have lost friends, family, and their children, and those that have being physically and emotionally injured as well.

It's time to look at a solid and advanced exit strategy. Canada should leave it's procurement, law enforcement and logistical experts in theatre as mentors and instructors behind the wire. Given the results, a faceless enemy, the emergence of "unbiased opinions and closer scrutiny of results" and political corruption/incompetence in Afghanistan, it's time to let Afghanistan solve Afghanistan. Bring the rest of the Canadians home. God keep those who remain in Afghanistan safe.

From this day to the ending of the world,
But we in it shall be remembered-
We few, we happy few, we band of brothers & sisters;
For they to-day that sheds their blood with me
Shall be my brother or sister; be thye ne'er so vile,
This day shall gentle their condition;
And naysayers back home now-a-bed
Shall think themselves accurs'd they were not here,
And hold their honour cheap whiles any speaks
That fought with us in Afghanistan.
(With repect to the Bard)

Do not stand at my grave and weep.
I am not there, I do not sleep.

I am the song that will never end.
I am the love of family and friend.
I am the child who has come to rest
In the arms of the Father who knows him best.

When you see the sunset fair,
I am the scented evening air.
I am the joy of a task well done.
I am the glow of the setting sun.

Do not stand at my grave and weep.
I am not there, I do not sleep.
Do not stand at my grave and cry.
I am not there, I did not die!

Rest in Peace my sister in arms. You've done your country proud.
