A comedian who appeared on a Fox News program that mocked Canada's military apologized to Canadians Tuesday and vowed he would never appear on the show again.
Doug Benson told CTV's Power Play that he was ignorant about the situation in Afghanistan and said considering the timing, the jokes he made about Canada were "completely out of line."
"I just want to say that I meant no disrespect to Canadians or to the Canadian military when I made those comments," Benson said from Los Angeles. "My comments were just meant to be silly and (were) absolutely misinformed -- I wasn't pretending to know what I was talking about, I'm not a political pundit."
"I'm sorry that I upset people, I'm a comedian, I want to make people laugh."
A group of pundits on Fox News' "Red Eye with Greg Gutfeld," each took turns trashing Canada and its military during an episode that aired on March 17, just before four Canadian soldiers were killed in Afghanistan.
The clip outraged Canadians, including Defence Minister Peter MacKay, who called the segment "disgusting" and "crass."
Jacqueline Girouard, whose husband, Chief Warrant Officer Robert Girouard, was killed by a suicide bomber in Afghanistan in November 2006, said there is no humour in what Canada has lost in the war.
"Every night I go to bed alone without a husband who I was married to for 27 years and was the father and hero to our three children," she said in an email to CTV.ca. "So again, there is nothing funny about this war. We live with this every day and hurtful comments do not help. It has been over two years since my husband was killed but feels like yesterday. Our soldiers' sacrifices should never ever be taken lightly."
Benson has already felt the impact of Canada's rage. He had a show in Edmonton cancelled after the owner of the comedy club received threats about Benson's performance.
Benson, who looked genuinely apologetic on Tuesday, said that he's been to Canada several times and he "truly loves it."
"I honestly said things, in retrospect, I completely regret . . . I can apologize, but people don't have to accept my apology . . . but certainly, I would love to come back to Canada someday," he said.
The controversial show
The host of the show, Greg Gutfeld, apologized on Monday saying, "I realize that my words may have been misunderstood. It was not my intent to disrespect the brave men, women and families of the Canadian military, and for that I apologize."
But the host also seemed to defend his program, adding "Red Eye is a satirical take on the news, in which all topics are addressed in a lighthearted, humorous and ridiculous manner."
On the show, Gutfeld mocked Lt.-Gen. Andrew Leslie, chief of land staff, who suggested in early March that the military may need a year-long break in operations due to personnel and equipment shortages.
"Once their Afghan mission winds down sometime in 2011, certain members of the Canadian military are looking to take a much-deserved break. And by certain members I mean all of them," Gutfeld said.
"Meaning, the Canadian military wants to take a breather to do some yoga, paint landscapes, run on the beach in gorgeous white Capri pants."
In the four-minute segment, Gutfeld asked the other three members of his panel: "Isn't this the perfect time to invade this ridiculous country? They have no army!"
Benson replied: "I didn't even know they were in the war. I thought that's where you go when you don't want to fight. Go chill in Canada."
While the show aired a week ago, it came to light in Canada after the recent deaths of the four soldiers.
An outraged Canadian posted the clip from the show to YouTube with a comment that said, "Fox News belittles and mocks the Canadian military."
In an interview with CTV Newsnet Monday, MacKay demanded an apology.
"It's crass, it's insensitive, it's in fact disgusting given the timing where Canada is just receiving back four fallen heroes here at CFB Trenton," MacKay said.
Benson said on Tuesday that the segment was only based on one article they read and they never researched Canada's role in Kandahar.
"The host . . . all he says is stuff that is meant to incite people and every question he asks the panelists is just ridiculous," he said. "We just have to respond . . . as a comedian on the show I don't necessarily agree with everything that's going on around me on the show, and certainly am not planning on appearing on that show again."

-We're their #1 trade partner
-We provide them with the most oil
-Without our friendship, it would cost them trillions to guard our huge border with the US
-We've never been at war with anyone per se, and yet we've fought in them all (EXCEPT Iraq, because we're smart enough to know better)
-You can't buy travel kits online to pretend to be American, but loads of them buy Canadian kits (I've met endless "Canadians" overseas from Portland or New York)
-Not one of our banks have to be bailed out-not one (perhaps there's a lesson to be learned from us???).
We have many Americans here that fled the US because of the draft, not to mention the underground railroad that helped a lot of slaves escape a terrible life. Many more live and work here and respect our contribution to their native land as well as the rest of the world. I accept the apologies given today. Perhaps these gentlemen could also learn from the many INFORMED American comedians that have performed here and made fun of us and themselves with knowledgeable comments. I saw Bill Maher live 9 days ago in Edmonton and he remarked how informed he thought we were. He was amazing and funny and had clout because he knew what he was talking about. These guys should give it a try.

As for the apologies, I'll accept them. I wasn't impressed by the program but how many Americans would find Rick Mercer funny, watching those old clips he used to do, mocking them in their own country? We need to rein in the hypocrasy... and part of their ignorance is our fault for the way we do ignore parts of our history that aren't always the most "enlightened" or pacifistic. As a nation we don't talk about our contributions. Modesty is well and good but lets not treat our history like a dirty secret. Take responsibility (and credit) for what we do.

We, in Canada, have equivalent shows that make a moquery of current events ( Air Farce, Rick Mercer report, ... ) which are just as bad as Red-Eye, but are aired prime-time.
Relax Canada.
ps: I hope Canadians reacted this way uniquelly on the basis of the bad timing that this whole event occured ...

However, FOX News needs to offer a corporate apology and impose sanctions on Gutfield the host. The Gutfield apology was weak at best.
Another person who should apologize is Monica Crawley. She is not comedian, she is a conservative political commentator who holds a Phd. in International Affairs. Her comments were absurd and her appearance on this two bit show really diminished her credibilty

Did it sting a bit? Yes.
Did it come at a particularly bad time? Yes.
But let’s move on, we know our military is the best at what we do!
I am thankful every day, that we live in a free democratic society, built on the sacrifices of those who paid the supreme price before us, which allows people to say anything they want (Even though we may be hurt by it or not agree with it).

Doug Benson is a comedian... a hilarious pot comedian... he makes silly jokes. Get a sense of humour, folks. They had no idea what was going on at the time and were doing Canuck jokes the same way we make fun of our neighbors to the South (Guns and Nascar... yee ha!) This is satire... remember satire?
Why aren't you so enraged with Rick Mercer's relentless mocking of yankees in Talking to Americans.
Get a life. Loosen up. Don't take it so personally. All you are doing by getting worked up by something like this is showing how ridiculous we Canadians can all be.

Grow up Canada, it was one man's opinion/joke.
The question I would ask is "why are people so sensitive about this?"
In a free society is lampooning the military off limits? NO.
This should never have been an issue in the first place. How about we get infuriated at our troops being in an illegal war to begin with?

We use words like honor, code, loyalty. We use these words as the backbone of a life spent defending something. You use them as a punchline. We have neither the time nor the inclination to explain ourselves to a man who rises and sleeps under the blanket of the very freedom we provide, then question the manner in which we provide it. We prefer you said thank you, and went on your way, Otherwise, we suggest you pick up a weapon, and stand to post. Either way, we don't give a damn what you think you are entitled to!

In as much as my blood boils at Doug Benson's sophomoric attempt at "humour", his apology was by leaps and bounds much more acceptable than Gutfeld's parsing. Indeed Doug Benson should come back to Canada; the perfect way to make amends for his transgression would be to perhaps entertain our troops and see first hand that Canada is much more than the uneducated stereotypes fostered by a misguided few in the United States.

Gutfeld on the other hand qualified his so called apology with reference to misunderstanding his comments. There's was no misunderstanding what I saw and heard.
He was crass, rude, mean spirited, completely uninformed and should be appropriately disciplined by his bosses.
A proper apology from Fox should include agreeing to run a program detailing for all Americans just how much our military has done in Afghanistan and other places, often shoulder to shoulder with their American counterparts. Perhaps it would be well also to remind Americans just who was in charge at NORAD on 911 and took the initiative to sent American and Canadian aircraft into the air in response to the attack on the Twin Towers (a Canadian Air Force general.

The reason the Daily Show and the Colbert Report are shown during Prime Time and this crap is shown at 3AM is just that: It's Crap! And while I think that Greg Gutfield is not a comedian at all, I feel sorry for Benson. I don't feel like he said anything deserving of the wrath he's incurred. He said that he didn't know Canada was at war with anyone. I imagine many American's know of our war efforts. He said he thought Canada was the place you went when you didn't want to fight. How is that an insult? I agree we have a great military, and I'm proud of our soldiers. It hurts me everytime I hear another has fallen, and I support their efforts completely. But is it so bad to be viewed as a "peaceful" country that doesn't force our residents into war? I don't think that being "peaceful" necessarily equates to being "pacifist", or even "wimpy" for that matter.
I think we should all practice being a little more Canadian, and be the bigger man. In the end, they're only words. Gutfield is a bully, not intelligent enough to use true satire. Maybe Rick Mercer could give him some lessons.

I thought what was said was ignorant and totally out of line in light of the fact that Canada wouldn't even be over there fighting this war if it wasn't for the US.
Maybe we should get a thicker skin, but any time things have been said about the American military (think Dixie Chicks) there has been a HUGE uproar. This is the same thing. Many Canadians aren't happy about the fact that Canada is involved in anything but peace-keeping missions, but this just shows that we support the individuals who are over there fighting.
I was appalled at FOX news' coverage of the American election and the whole "Osama-Obama" thing, and they lost my subscription then. This situation just confirms that I made the right choice.

___________________
The show is a SATIRICAL take on the news, and the mocking was done by a COMEDIAN (albeit a lame one lacking taste).
Canadian pride shouldn't encompass the silly fact that our military has been neglected by liberal politicians in Ottawa to the point that a "year-long break" is required.
Our brave sacrificing men and women deserve better. People need to align their anger in the proper direction.

Unlike Gutfeld, this man's apology sounded sincere.I think we should take the high road here, and accept it in a gracious way.My back is not strong enough to go through life carrying grudges.Anyway,I've opened my mouth an put both feet in it several times in the past, and my apologies for unintended offensive quips were accepted.I accept his words as sincere.
It will take some time for the sting to subside, but the proper thing to do is to accept his apology, and,if he does come back here,to welcome him as we would anyone else.Personally,I'm satisfied that I got my message out, that it was heard, and I am now ready to move on.My "venting" is done.

However, this man's words sounfd genuine to me.The families, and those closer to our military people will have to make up their own minds. But I sense he feels sorry for what went down, and I accept that as sincere.
He is one of many, many people in the USA who are not well informed about this country. And most of them are very nice people.I know that because I go there often, and I am often taken aback when someone in California jumps up in dismay upon realizing how much alike "we the people" really are.We just have to accept that Americans are interested in America.Period.
I appreciate that he cared enough to apologize, and hope we can be gracious if he does return to Canada in the future.
Honestly,he sounded more sincere than the dufus who suggested we just didn't understand.

In a way, this issue with Gutfeld et al is actually quite good for Canada: it gives many people a wake-up call to realise that these are two different countries here. There has been so much value place on 'integration' and 'cooperation' and 'common goals'. Now we are going to again start valuing things like 'sovereignty', 'independence', 'uniqueness', 'solidarity'...

1. It is a low rated late night show. It was not the prime time news or the government making these comments.
2. We have for years treated our military as the forgotten, under funding them and calling them peace keepers. Is it any surprise that the rest of the world does not know about our recent contributions?
3. I did not hear any of the comments calling our military personnel cowards or wimps. They were joking about the stand-down comments to which I refer to comment 2 above.
4. For years, our media and public have taken shots at the American military, calling them everything from baby killers to aggressors. I do not recall any apology ever coming from our media to them.

We love shows like the Daily show that makes light of every situation. That is ok when it's Americans, or we're making fun of BUSH, but if someone makes a joke about the military doing yoga, it's offensive.
He didn't attack what we were doing, nor did it take away from the seriousness of the mission. It was light humour
relax people. He should not have apologized. People are too uptight, but love to throw stones.
