Two Canadian soldiers were injured in an attack in southern Afghanistan on Thursday.

The soldiers were travelling in an armoured vehicle when an improvised explosive device detonated during a routine patrol in the Shah Wali Khot district about 20 kilometres north of Kandahar city.

The attack took place at about 8:50 a.m. local time on Thursday, according to a statement from the Canadian Forces.

The soldiers were evacuated by helicopter and taken to the Kandahar airfield hospital for treatment.

One of the men was "seriously injured" and is reported to be in fair condition, while the other was treated and released from hospital, It is unclear whether the more seriously injured soldier will be transported to the U.S. military hospital in Landstuhl, Germany for further treatment.

The soldiers' were able to notify their own next of kin about their injuries.

The attack came just a few days after the death of Canadian soldier Sapper Sean Greenfield on Saturday. The 25-year-old was killed in a similar attack, when the armoured vehicle he was travelling in struck an IED in Zhari district west of Kandahar city.

He had been participating in a major effort between Canadian, U.S. and British troops to locate bomb-making factories in Taliban territory.

The Taliban has kept up a deadly offensive throughout this winter. In previous winters, militant attacks slowed down as fighters hid in the mountains to regroup in advance of fighting in the spring.

Eleven Canadian soldiers have been killed since December, all in roadside bomb attacks.

The Taliban claims the deaths are part of a new aggressive campaign aimed at coalition forces.
