Kandahar Airfield is being expanded at a rapid pace to make room for the influx of American troops expected to arrive in the early months of Barack Obama's presidency.
CTV's Steve Chao, reporting from Kandahar, said the military base looks more like a construction zone as crews work to build barracks and facilities for the incoming troops.
"$850 million is being spent on expanding this base," Chao reported Tuesday.
He said there are currently 12,000 troops at the base and the number is expected to double or even triple over the next year.
Obama is planning a troop surge for Afghanistan in the range of 30,000 U.S. soldiers, although there is still debate over where the troops will be allocated.
For those sent to Kandahar, Chao said they will help Canadian troops push the Taliban out from rural areas.
"The expectation is that a lot of these American soldiers that arrive later on this year and in the coming weeks and months will be used to push the Taliban out of their strongholds and create a safe zone for the Afghan government to operate in," Chao said.
While Canada is currently in charge of operations in Kandahar, Chao said if the American troops outnumber the Canadians they'll likely have the final say regarding operational matters.
"Saying that, NATO has made it very clear that the Americans will work alongside the NATO troops here," Chao said.
Kandahar Airfield was originally designed for 5,000 people and observers say the base is already strained.
Lt.-Col. John Uptmor, an American engineer in charge of the U.S. expansion at Kandahar Airfield, told The Canadian Press that the biggest challenge is getting everything done before the soldiers arrive.

Please let's not even entertain any protectionist responses to this issue. Canadian consumers go south to shop because of the cheaper prices. How about resorting to competitive pricing as a solution...that will keep Canadian shoppers at home.

Afghans know how to win by attrition - it's almost laughable that we're "training" them to do something we can't even win at in the process of fighting with them, and when that doesn't work (which it hasn't in many years now), we send in more troops to make a bigger fight with them.

"American troops to Canada's rescue again...God Bless America..."
You’re kidding right? If the US had not pushed into Iraq on a hunt for oil, sorry I mean "weapons of mass destruction" they could have cleaned up their own mess in Afghanistan as opposed to let Canada and other countries do it for them. Besides, it was Bin Laden based out of Afghani terrorist training camps that attacked the US not Sadam’s regime. But that was their policy makers decision not the fault of the US military.
The influx of new troops will help, it will be nice to have another nation support with fighting troops as opposed to those who sit and watch while the dirty work gets done by others.
Remember we went in there to support the US, not of our own accord and if they US could do it by themselves, why are they asking Canada to stay, get your facts straight before you make ignorant (as in uneducated) comments.

If Afghanistan wants our troops to break-off engagements with militants because there "may" be some civilians in the mix, then either find some way to get the Chicken S--t militants to wear a uniform or pull out all the men and woemen that are trying to rid this country of their plague.
Go kill them all!
