While Canadian news outlets were doing a full-court press to cover the new border deal with the United States, it appears that the response south of the border could better be defined as "meh."

Stephen Harper met U.S. President Barack Obama at the White House Wednesday afternoon, but there was no pomp and ceremony planned – no state dinner and apparently no photo op in the Oval Office.

As well, a search of two major U.S. newspapers - The New York Times and Washington Post - yields nary a word about Harper's visit.

But for navel-gazing Canadians, at least the Times was still playing up its recent story on NHL tough guys and brain injuries.

On CNN's website, Obama's schedule is posted, noting a 2:15 p.m. "bilateral meeting" with Harper followed by statements from the two at 3 p.m., before Obama heads off to a campaign event at 4:35 p.m.

A White House agenda posted online simply states "the (Oval Office) meeting is closed press."

That led Washington's WTOP Radio political commentator Mark Plotkin to suggest to CTV News Channel the prime minister was apparently given a choice between an Oval Office photo op, or public statements with the president afterward.

Andrew MacDougall, associate director of communications with the PMO, declined to answer whether Harper was given a choice, but did reply in an email to CTVNews.ca confirming meeting times.

But Plotkin decried his country's apathy toward its northern neighbour.

"This is the same country that seems to be continually snubbed by this president," he said.

"I must wonder why no state dinner for this prime minister? They had a state dinner for Mexico – nothing for Canada. I think you're treated quite shabbily by this administration," he said.

Does Mexico get better treatment because of the large Hispanic voting community in the U.S.? Do the Democrats play up this connection?

If there's any political gain in today's announcement for Obama, who faces an election in 2012, it's telling America he's tough on border security in the south and north, Plotkin added.

That aside, he said Harper's visit is still being treated like a diplomatic and political "quickie."

"There is no fanfare, there is no buzz, there is not even information that he is here in this city," he said.

"Why do you stand for it?" he added, exasperated.

You don't wine and dine the one who gives you everything you want anyway... Pretty simple, Harper has no back bone and will jump at every chance to prove himself to Obama or any POTUS...

Seeing as how this is a president who gave the Queen of England an iPod full of his speeches as a gift during his first UK visit, I'm not too concerned about his ignorance when it comes to the PM. The guy is a dolt. Heck, if I were Obama I wouldn't want to be seen with Harper either. After all, Harper has kept Canadians employed and Canada has the best fiscal outlook in the G8 - you think Obama wants to be compared to that?

they do the same thing every time. quick oval office meeting and a quick press conference. i think harper does get snubbed quite a bit by obama administration . why they gotta do there press conference in that auditorium. nobody else does it there. also i think its poor we never get a state dinner invite. i think its ridiculous. why cant they have the press conference in nice room of white house instead of a dank auditorium. its a huge snub and harper needs to stop accepting the same agenda every time he goes to dc. and finally why does harper always gotta go there. why doesnt obama go to ottawa?

My goodness all the Harper comments, I am just glad he is representing me and not Mr Ignatieff or Mr Dion or the wanna be PM Mr Rae. Yes Mr Harper is conservative but he also carries a strong position on the Keystone Pipeline, a project in which Mr Obama the liberal, is waffling terribly. It all suggests a frosty meeting.

From an American point of view, we are not scary. Therefore, no fanfare and mass media appeal. It's really quite simple. Canada is not a 'ratings-getter'.

Jeremy l have been to Europe and the Us in the last year, just travelling. Believe me Canada is held in extremely high regard. Canada's power is increasing because of Harper and his Conservative government. Canada's standing in the world has dramatically increased in the last few years. It saddens me that you and some others of like views are stuck in some kind of reality warp.

Harper treats us canadians with contempt and ignorance. I'm glad he got it back in his face. maybe this will make him wake up. The USA and obama dont care about canada. he just wants all of our natural resourses. Maybe now, Harper will get a spine and stop catering to the US.Next time there is a G20 summit. dont invite obama. do it from the internet. Save our money for us this time .Start running this country Harper and stop trying to be a friend to obama. It's clear, he doesnt like you, as most of us don't...Now you know how popular your not...

For a Prime Minister I could respect and admire I would think a bit more pomp and circumstance might be in order,
but for THIS Prime Mnister, the most undemocratic in our history, one who flouts parliamentary law and squashes parliamentary debate, one who bullheadedly pushes his own personal crime agenda through despite experts from all directions telling him it will not work and will cost way too much; this Prime Minister Mr. Stephen Harper, who treats everday voters with disdain, kowtows to big business? The one who in 2006 said: "When I get through with this country, you won't recognize it"?...

I have no respect for this autocratic, self-appointed King of Harper's Government and could care less how President Obama treats him. I would just tell Obama to understand that what Stephen Harper stands for is not what Canada stands for.

There's another possible explanation for the lack of fanfare: this agreement is not a big deal. Sorry, but even as a Canadian living down here I don't see this as anything more than a common sense expansion of our border cooperation. Also, be careful what you wish for. Given that Republicans are likely to find fault with anything this President does, heavily publicizing this deal might result in a lot of Fox News stories examining the "threat" that Canada poses to US security.

Now that I am part of the family, we eat in the kitchen and I help myself to stuff in the fridge. Gift are now only for birthdays. It is called being one of the family. Canadians are so insecure, the question you should ask is why doesn't any other world leader get such a familiar welcome.

Isn't it also likely that the sensitive sovereignty issues the border deal raises are considered touchy subjects, causing an unwillingness to fan any flames of interest in the exchange ?

The meeting is almost covert given the topic matter, and it's sensitivity, whether for genuine security concerns, or for political hay-making.

I think the reason the Obama edministration in Snobbing Harper is for the simple fact that we have a conservative government and Obama is a Liberal. If the republicans were in power in Washington, Harper would be given the red carpet and the whole nine yards..It does not seem to matter that both countries are the best of friends and should treat each other with respect.Sad Sad Sad.

I am telling you, our international reputation is taking a huge hit with Harper at the helm. Our largest, and most important trading partner, and not a word on our border security measures? I fear another 4 years of Harper will permanently damage our national reputation (what little we have left).

Harper is seen as a spineless leader that will do anything the U.S. tells him to do in a desperate attempt to fit in. They know when they say jump, Canada will jump. This is why Canada doesn't get any respect anymore.

I am guessing the "closed to the press" is at Harper's request as they may want to ask him a question. Can't have that in a democracy!

Mr. Plotkin, its not Canada that is being snubbed, its Harper. A Canadian reporter very well knows what kind of sour relationships Harper enjoys with the Premiers of Ontario, Quebec, and probably other Premiers in Canada past and present.
He just rubs fellow politicians worldwide the wrong way. Even the Premier of China rebuked Harper in public form his cavalier treatment of China. A public rebuke is such a rarity.

Paul
said

The seeming coolness from the U.S. administration may seem like a snub, but from a political strategy point of view, it actually works in Canada's favour. Given the protectionist sentiments in the U.S. of late, even something as benign as this border deal could lead to a lot of unnecessary backlash if the press spins it a certain way. This border deal is important to businesses, and the way to make sure it passes without fanfare is to play one's cards close to one's chest.

Why do we care? Harper has to fly down south for several thousand dollar's of Canadian tax payer's money, in order to announce a deal that will make Americans happier than Canadians... If they're ignoring it, that's their own fault. Canadian citizens will focus on the real issue that Harper is snubbing: The environment.

I think this is probably more a comment on Stephen Harper and the Conservatives (read Republicans) than it is on Canada as a whole.Fact of the matter is, this border deal is small potatoes in the grand scheme of things. Plus, with the controversial omnibus crime bill about to pass, Harper probably wants to be out of the country right now.Good for Obama, he's got bigger fish to fry than to cow tow on a minor border agreement. It's not like Harper has done Obama any favours.

The USA is too pre-occupied with its own recession and with over one million repossessions this past year does not get excited about a neighbouring Prime Minister any more than the Pres of Mexico when he calls.
Its business and that can be boring even to Canadians. Lets not get narcissistic. Only the media get excited about this stuff.
