With U.S. mid-term elections approaching, conservatives south of the border have begun to rail against Canada as a transit route for terrorists, prompting Canada's ambassador in Washington to wade into the fray.

The debacle began when Sharron Angle, a Tea party candidate from Nevada who is running for a seat in the U.S. Senate, suggested to a group of Hispanic youths that the 9/11 bombers entered the U.S. from Canada.

"What we know is that our northern border is where the terrorists came through," she said, in remarks captured on video. "That's the most porous border that we have. We cannot allow terrorists; we cannot allow anyone to come across our border if we don't know why they're coming."

None of the 9/11 terrorists entered the U.S. from Canada.

Angle, who is in a close race Senate majority leader Harry Reid, was trying to deflect criticism of television ads for her campaign that focus on illegal immigration. Although they mention Mexico and feature dark-skinned teens, she said the ads weren't necessarily aimed at Hispanics.

Her remarks led Canada's ambassador in Washington, Gary Doer, to write a letter to Angle's campaign on Monday.

"There have been no terrorist attacks on the United States coming from Canada," he wrote, referencing the 9/11 Commission report. "I can assure you that Canada takes border security very seriously and trust you will see fit to set the record straight."

"We do not have a 'porous' border but rather one of the more secure borders in the world," he added.

On Tuesday, Angle's campaign responded by focusing on the case of Ahmed Ressam, an Algerian man who was apprehended by American authorities in 1999 while trying to enter the U.S. near Victoria. He was subsequently convicted of plotting to bomb Los Angeles International Airport.

Conservative pundit Michelle Malkin has defended Angle for making the comments.

"Angle is absolutely spot-on about the porous northern border," Malkin wrote in a blog post on Tuesday. "She's saying what homeland security officials have been saying for years."

She then listed a number of terrorist suspects linked to Canada, according to Janice Kephart, a lawyer who worked for the 9/11 Commission. However, none of those named are tied to the Sept. 11, attacks.

"It's important to let people know that we care about security and we care about factual errors being made," Doer told reporters. "And when somebody goes off the facts, we're going to speak up."

Doer isn't the first Canadian ambassador to weigh in on the issue. In 2009, former ambassador Michael Wilson corrected Homeland Security czar Janet Napolitano after she suggested there was a Canadian connection to the 9/11 terrorists.

However, U.S. officials have expressed fears of terrorists successfully entering the country from Canada.

In 2008, Michael Chertoff, who was then secretary of homeland security, told the New York Daily News that more than a dozen terrorist suspects had attempted to enter the U.S. from Canada.

Typical American ignorance. Try telling any American that a Canadian invented the phone or the game of basketball , they can see the proof but still won't believe it.

To Prof. Pye CharttYou got the description of Americans bang on. They are all of what you describe. They wonder why they are the most hated nation on earth. No, it is not because people are jealous of them. It is because they have this crazy idea that they are a Super Power. Every thing they touch turns to poop.

Some of the left-wing posters here are as ignorant as Sharron Angle herself. Political opportunists as they are, they connect everything that happens in the world to their crusade. Well, Miss Angle needs to wise up; we are tired of these silly remarks from down South. She seems to have temporarily forgotten the porous state their Southern border, which is actually closer to home for her than their Northern border. Some Americans don't even know where Canada is.Shocking!!

Good for you to point that small factoid out to the Americans. I wish he had gone on and said more on the 911 issue. Unfortunately the flatearthers would have come out of the wood work screaming non sequiturs like, "It was a brown guy in a cave and that is good enough for me" if he/anyone questions the NIST fable. This just in....The moon is not made of green cheese.

A tea party backed candidate? I think the term is Republican, but whatever. Go figure using blatant lies to try and stir up some support. It's all these guys have. Honestly, close the border. I don't care. America is not a good place to visit. At least not the places I have been.

Cool, now that we dispelled the American myth of our contribution, or lack there of, regarding the 9/11 tragedy, maybe we can now dispel the myth that 3 buildings, one of which wasn't even hit by a plane, fell a free fall speed from "structural damage". Or the hole in the pentagon wasn't half the size of the 'plane' which hit it.

Duh!! Hello. People do realize there is an election compaign going on,don't they.WHile I find the ignorance troubling, this falsehood pales by comparison to some of the things those candidates, and those who work for them, are saying. This woman could be lying. She could also be genuinely mistaken. Not exactly the kind of person anyone would weant in a position of authority. But stll,if you're following the election and the accompanying ads, that is one NASTY battle going on.Some of those ads and claims are viscious. And clearly not created by people genuinely mistaken, but by people filled with hate or fear. Get over it folks. There are many Americans in powerful positions that still think Canadian provinces are still wating in line for their turn to become states. For the duration of this election campaign, the truth,or the facts of any matter will remain irelevant. It's all about winning. At ANY cost. If Canadians want something to worry about, perhaps they should consider the impact here if those elected there can't get their economy back on track. If our biggest customer isn't buying our products either because they can't afford them,or because protectionists want to "Buy American", then we have a problem that matters.

Bad enough that a significant portion of American politician's don't even know we are fighting in Afghanistan, and have one of the highest casualty rates, now this BS comes up again. And I thought OUR politician's had foot-in-mouth disease!

Here are three examples of Canadian response to terrorism. One, the sacrifice of brave Canadians in Afghanistan. Second, at the height of the 911 crisis, Canada facilitated the diversion of in flight US aircraft to Canadian landing strips (truly unfathomable logistics during a time of unknown risk). Third, Ken Taylor's Canadian caper .. if you don't recall, it is well worth a search. Thank you Canada, from an Arizonan.

This is just the latest in a long string of uninformed, uneducated, and ridiculous statements from this woman. What is troubling is that there are many more Republican backed Tea-Party candidates like her who are actually close to getting voted into the U.S. Senate. Sarah Palin just took her place at a rally in Nevada where election law prevented Angle from participating. She praised Angle as a fighter who was still standing after all the unfair criticism she's had to endure from the media. And Palin just might run for President in 2012.Just think; a President who thinks we are the problem with regard to terrorists. We should be afraid of what's going on down there right now...

The offense I have taken over this "issue" is no more than the nationalistic embarrassment that I regularly feel when dimwitted Canadians (mostly pigheaded left-wingers), driven by their own political ignorance and flaming inferiority complex, trash America and their southern neighbors at every turn. (To them, America is an evil empire of murderous, imperialistic, capitalistic, oil-obsessed thugs who deserve to suffer a global wrath, economically and culturally.) What's worse, and who should be more ashamed of themselves? Gee, I don't know.

Funny story; I received a survey call from a special organization, could have been CSIS it’s been awhile and I don’t recall exactly. I remember two questions out of many—one he asked and one I asked! His first – “Do you feel that our borders are safe?” Hell no, how can I feel safe knowing that’s those that guard our border get to “walk off the job” if they perceive a threat to their person? I suggested we use our military up and down the border; they don’t get the luxury of leaving their post! Ok my question was “are tall men in black suits and sun glasses gonna come and take me away?” YES he replied! I’m still waiting… I just think in these times that our best tool is our military. I mean really; why not use our best tools available? Guarding our borders as you well know is a serious undertaking; I’m confident that our military is up for the job! Our border Porous (full of holes) possible; take this in the spirit it’s meant “things aren’t always as they seem” You have me stumped how did they do it? I don’t know what number you call for an emergency on your side but here we call 9/11!

It would appear that American ignorance about Canada continues to be boundless and may become even more distorted with the rise of these Tea-Bagger buffoons.Evidently even sending soldiers to Afghanistan to prove our worth in the war on terror has done little or nothing to please these people.

Ms. Angle, if you plan to serve the State of Nevada as a Senator in the U.S. Senate then you should gather FACTS before speaking. 9/11 terrorists did not pass through or come from Canada. Your own Federal authorities have confirmed this ! We are your friendly neighbours. In fact over 1.3 million Canadians visited Nevada in 2009, many spending the "winter" there, creating hundreds of jobs in your state. Trade between Canada and Nevada that same year totaled 1.3 Billion dollars. Please try and get the facts before speaking out.You are running the risk of cutting off the hand that feeds you! We are your friends....not terrorists...that is a fact !

The Tea Party in the USA is about wimming elections. Whether its calling Obama a muslim, saying that he's not really American, or saying that Canada is how terrorist get into the US....its all about votes. They are the worst that politics has yet created in the US. They will appeal to whatever xenophobic tendencies Americans have, their racisms, their quiet bigotry. And they will absolutely continue to divide that nation in an attempt to rule it and one day historians will look back on the Tea Party as a major factor in the collapse of that once great nation.

This just boggles the mind. Regardless of whether the alleged perpetrators entered the United States via Canada or another country directly, THEY ENTERED THROUGH US CUSTOMS AND IMMIGRATION SERVICES AT SOME POINT.Blaming Canada, or any other nation for these people being in the US prior to 9/11 is nothing more than a cop-out to take the onus off of US customs as the focal point for "blame".

As long as we define being a Canadian as not being an American (even though we are all North American, but who wants to be called a United Statsian?), we will worry about what the Americans think. Unfortunatly, a lot of them don't think farther than their immediate interests. How many Americans believe the U.S. Government was behind 9/11? Do we really want the Americans to find us? If they think we are a handful of "Eskimos" out on the frozen tundra, maybe they will not be tempted to move up north as they run out of room, jobs, and resources. We have a great country, let's visit a Canadian destination next vacation and get to know ourselves.

Republican Senate candidate Sharron Angle, claims the U.S.-Canadian border is the most porous border the US has. Correct me if I'm wrong but is it not the responsiblity of the US custom and border agents to check people entering into the US. If she feels the 911 terroist enterd the US from Canada then it shows that the US borded agents are not doing there job which has nothing to do with Canada. This is strickly a US problem and maybe she should look inwards instead of blaming other countries for the problem of pores boarders.

Even if they had come "from Canada," we don't screen people LEAVING the country. The US is responsible for screening people who wish to enter cross their border and enter the country.

The myth will continue to persist as long as citizens in the US stay uninformed. As long as you have a certain segment of your population that believes in conspiracy theories and doesn't care about the facts, you will have politicians that continue to use those myths for political gain.Good job Mr. Doer for pointing out the myth.

Good for Doer to set the record straight yet again fo Canada. Angle should remember that Canadians butter a lot of bread in her State and an apology is warranted. Let's hope the ignorrance of some American politicians over 911 finally ends.
