OTTAWA — Talk, as it turns out, is not cheap.

The cost of running the Prime Minister's Office will jump by over $1 million this year mostly because of communications expenses.

The final number will be published in the government's official accounting of expenses for 2009-2010, which will be released in the fall.

But The Canadian Press has learned it will hit about $9.89 million dollars, compared to last year's $8.15 million on spending.

The PMO has hired another 20 people in the last year, including more staff to handle regional and ethnic media, as well as direct government communication, like the ad blitz on the economic action plan.

Control over whole-of-government messaging has also come to reside within the PMO, keeping staffers busy approving requests for information and interviews with every single government department.

The Prime Minister also took multiple trips abroad and hosted the G8 and G20 summits, which expanded the cost of running his shop.

A spokesperson for the prime minister said he believed the costs were essential.

There is more pressure in a 24-hour news cycle for ministers, MPs and the government to respond, said Andrew MacDougall, but the explosion in third language media has also added to demand.

"We've made the conscious effort to really step up our efforts and frankly, in contrast with past communications shops, to be out there more and be more helpful," he said.

Staff in the prime ministers' office are subject to a wage freeze as part of the government-wide effort to face down its $54-billion deficit.

The office is also currently under strategic review for this year.

Over the last decade, the cost of running the PMO has fluctuated between $6.7 million in 2000-2001 to a high of $13.8 million in 2005-2006.

That was also the year that former Liberal Prime Minister Paul Martin and current Prime Minister Stephen Harper shared the office.

There is no line item tally for 2006-2007.

The way expenses were tallied have also changed over the years, making a direct comparison between previous governments difficult.

Starting in 2008-2009, government ministers were required to begin individually disclosing their expenses under the new accountability act.

Prior to 2006-2007, there was a line item for "office of the prime minister" under the expenses for the privy office, but those costs did not reflect political staff costs.

So that bad Mr Harper has taken us from 13.8 million spent in 2005-06 to 9.89 in 2009-2010. How irresponsible must he be...Thank God he has put a wage freeze on the PMO staff before it's too late.

Was $8.15 million. Will be $8.89 million. That's an increase of $1.74 million. What other department of any level of government was able to suck a 21.35% increase out of the tax-payer? Should we give the king a majority and see what else he can steal from us?

It is disgusting how these leaders lie to us before being elected. Next is a big raise in salaries. Then comes a brain wave that they must travel to all the other countries tell people how they should govern. We in Canada paid the highest taxes. No consideration is given to the seniors, hospitals ,universities. Canadians have become puppets given the politicians the rights to spend our tax money careless. No consideration is given that the cow may dry up someday. David

Actually it comes out to more than $1.7 million more! So what example is Harper Machiavelli going to show by spending more while telling others to spend less given the Conservative party's rose coloured glasses...

So lets see, the cost of running the PMO has dropped by 4 million in 4 years. Thats what the left wing media calls an increase.

I am certainly not a Harper supporter, but it does cost money to run a government. To spend $9M on the PMO really doesn't sound unreasonable. ctv.ca is posting stories in the hazy, lazy days of summer to rile people up. Relax, it's not that bad.

Would you Liberal, left leaning supporters complain if it were the Liberal Party doing this? I don't think so. Why the hell is it that when the Conservatives, at any level of government, does something that the Liberals have always does, all hell breaks loose!!! Listen folks, you hate Conservatives because they are a threat to your ideological ways. Buck it up......Harper is here to stay a while. Iggy is on his way out soon so don't worry. You still have nobody to take over as Liberal leader anyways......

We've never had a government that wastes as much money as this one.

I am tired of all these politcos spending my tax dollars to tell me they are the greatest when all impirical evidence points to the contrary. I'm nearly certain that it would cost less to simply tell the truth. It's all the spin doctors, publicists, script writers and image consultants that add to the cost of communicating information not to mention the amount of money spent deliberately hiding the truth. I'm betting the PMO has already spent a million dollars just on the heavy black markers and excessive staff that is required to censor every piece of information that the public requests. "Communications"...what a joke.

Communications expenses?.... more like propaganda expenses. Communist Russia would be proud at how tight the control this administration has on 'communications and media relations.'

It is about time - as a grandparent I have watched our kids (who were allowed to fail although I do remember some nagging on our part) learn, I have watched our children now micro-manage their children. A big part of it is the fact that there are predators out there and an extreme reluctance on the parents part to alllow freedom that might result in the children becoming victims.
