Jamie Carroll has resigned as both the Liberal party's national director and deputy national campaign chairman, more than a week after reports emerged he would be shuffled to another post.

"On behalf of our National Executive, I would like to thank Jamie for his service to the Liberal Party," Senator Marie Poulin, the party's national president, said in a press release Wednesday.

"His loyalty to our leader and to our party reflects his deep commitment to the values of all Liberal Party of Canada members, and we trust that these values will serve him well in his future endeavours."

Carroll was considered one of Liberal Leader Stephane Dion's closest associates, but last month, he purportedly made controversial comments about hiring more Quebecers.

During a closed-door meeting, Carroll allegedly said that if he hired more Quebecers, he would also have to hire more Chinese staffers.

Deputy leader Michael Ignatieff called for Carroll's dismissal, while Dion stood by his associate, saying his remarks were misinterpreted.

The Canadian Press then reported Dion would "reassign" Carroll, apparently in an attempt by the Liberal leader to quell dissent within the party.

But Carroll then sent a letter to party executive members, in which he threatened to sue for defamation and demanded up to 18 months severance pay.

The same press release issued Wednesday that included comments from Poulin said the decision was a "confidential personnel matter," and that the party "would make no further comments on the issue."

Dion's a very decent person but the "Long Knives" made their decision that he had to go the night he won the leadership.

Carole, to answer your question, it's because Liberals are cannibals and are more interested in destroying their own than forming government. Even Ignatieff, on Question Period, would not answer if he got along well with Dion (for future reference Iggy, the correct answer is "We get along great" even if it's not true). I would love to see Dion as PM but I'm afraid he's in for a lynching, for no good reason.

Dion's win at the leadership convention was, in part, a rejection of the very same liberal elites who are acting like a bunch of cry babies now. The grassroots made their choice, but instead of accepting it and moving on these people inexplicably and incompetently waited for their first opportunity to undermine Dion, and then took it. These people's actions as of late are just more proof that they deserved to lose in the first place.

I love it, Tory majority with any luck as I can't afford another billion dollar boondoggle with the Liberals anytime soon. Also got a real kick out of hearing Dion using that "hidden agenda" term again.

HA HA HA...Please...Please...stop Mr. Dion. I am getting such a sore belly from laughing for weeks on end. Yes, just another symptom of an internal struggle. It won't end until Dion is gone. Let's hope he's there for a long time.

The Liberal implosion continues in the form of a slow-moving train wreck. They managed to drag this Carroll episode for two whole weeks.

The insult to all Quebecers as being referred to as nothing more than a minority group will be remembered in the next election.

I like the part where Senator Poulin said about his loyalty to the party - I guess a threat of a lawsuit against the party show that you are quite loyal to it. I wonder how much of the taxpayer money he will get (as the federal government gives our tax $$ to every party for each vote that they get).

This tells you what deep trouble Dion is in with the party. The National Director was hand picked by Dion and despite that Dion could not save Carroll's hide. The party is looking to get rid of Dion asap and so they are praying that Stephen Harper finds a way to orchestrate an election.
In the meantime Dion is talking to tin ears in Alberta. There is no way the likes of Dion will get any seats in Alberta. Particularly since Quebec is going the other way and disavowing the Liberals. So long it's been good to know you Dion.

The question remains, why would a few Liberals go to the media with this singular mis-spoken comment from one of their own?

This story has many interesting twists and turns.

In a private meeting with Liberals, a few Ignatieff supporters decide to go to the media with Carroll's comments.

It was obvious this was done to undermine Stephane Dion, who had personally appointed Caroll and stood by him.

Yesterday Dion announced he was stripping Ignatieff of his high profile foreign affairs shadow portfolio, no doubt a slap for going public on Carroll.

Now with their shallow bank account being threatened with a defamation suit, Carroll suddenly decides to resign.

Sounds like a buy-out.

It would seem the Quebec caucus has succeeded in getting rid of Carroll.

Just to be clear, while Dion is in Alberta trying to win away seats in Tory locks, his own province is getting ready to throw him and his party out of mainland Quebec...

Just when you thought it couldn't get any worse for the Liberals, they find a way.

It's amazing that this whole thing got out in the public domain given that the comments were made in a private Liberal Party meeting.
