Canadians did what they could to be part of the Live Earth festivities by hosting street fairs, house parties and mini concerts.

Several public places were showing the live and continuous CTV broadcast of the day-long global concert spectacle. But each city added their own touch to give the event a Canadian flavour.

In Montreal, Live Earth was to be celebrated with a francophone concert featuring some of their best local talent. Eric Lapointe, Garou, DJ Champion and Dan Bigras were all expected to hit the stage to entertain an audience of about 20,000.

The outdoor concert is taking place Saturday evening in the city's Old Port and will be hosted by former Greenpeace Quebec director Steven Guilbeault.

In Vancouver, people attended the Global Habitat Festival, an event put on by Friends of Live Earth. The outdoor festival featured live music, an eco-village as well as live coverage of the concerts happening around the world.

In St. John's, a local radio station celebrated its own 30th birthday as well as Live Earth with an impressive party featuring popular local bands.

Some of the home-grown stars that participated are The Novaks, Dana Parsons and the Chris LeDrew band. The show was to take place all day Saturday at the Prince Edward Plaza. Admission was a bag of recyclables.

In Toronto, the green movement rocked Yonge-Dundas Square from noon to 8 p.m. on Saturday.

People also enjoyed a green street fest featuring green products and services for sale. There was also a mini festival on Toronto's Harbourfront where the public was invited to a barbeque, live entertainment, a beer tent as well as other outdoor activities.

The entire event was powered by green electricity generated from wind and low-impact water sources.

MuchMusic, MuchMoreMusic, Bravo!, MuchVibe, and Star! will also be showing certain concerts. You can also listen to the music on CHUM radio stations.

It is about time - as a grandparent I have watched our kids (who were allowed to fail although I do remember some nagging on our part) learn, I have watched our children now micro-manage their children. A big part of it is the fact that there are predators out there and an extreme reluctance on the parents part to alllow freedom that might result in the children becoming victims.
