Amid escalating diplomatic tensions, Foreign Affairs Minister John Baird says it's time for Canada to place greater pressure on Iran.

"Now is the time to redouble our efforts diplomatically, to redouble our efforts on those sanctions," he told CTV's Question Period on Sunday.

His comments come days after Iran's Supreme Leader Ayatollah Ali Khamenei likened Israel to a "cancerous tumour that should be cut and will be cut," fueling speculation that Israel may be forced to take swift military action.

Acknowledging Khamenei's threat, Baird said global anxieties related to Iran's human rights record and nuclear program are increasing.

"It's not just an Israeli question," he said. "The fear in the Arab world -- in the entire region, the Gulf and the Middle East -- is palpable on this issue."

Speaking from a studio in Tel Aviv, Baird also referenced Adolf Hitler's Mein Kampf while talking about Khamenei's threat and the possibility of Israel retaliating.

"You can understand why the Jewish people and why Israel would take him seriously," he said of the Supreme Leader.

"Hitler wrote Mein Kampf more than a decade before he became Chancellor of Germany," he said. "They take these issues pretty seriously here."

Hitler's somewhat autobiographical book Mein Kampf establishes the basic political ideas behind Nazi ideology, the same beliefs behind the Holocaust.

Baird went on to add that Iran is "increasingly" a significant security threat for the West.

"We're tremendously concerned," he said, referring to Iran's nuclear program, human rights record and support of militant groups as particularly troubling issues.

In his nearly two-hour speech, Khamenei affirmed that Iran has assisted militant groups such as the Lebanese Hezbollah and the Palestinian Hamas in the past.

Baird's call for added pressure on the Middle Eastern nation come against the backdrop of increased global anxiety about Iran's nuclear program.

Iran maintains that its nuclear activity focuses on innocuous causes such as power generation and medical isotopes. Other countries, however, fear Tehran is developing nuclear weapons.

The United States and Israel have indicated that military action against Iran and its nuclear facilities may be on the horizon. That suggestion has roiled Iran, which has said Washington would face defeat if that threat materializes.

For his part, Baird noted that President Barack Obama has said that "all options are on the table" when it comes to pressuring Israel -- including the military option.

"At the same time, I think we have an incredible responsibility to take every single diplomatic effort necessary," he said.

Last November, Canada joined the United States and Britain in slapping new sanctions on Iran. Previous sanctions included prohibiting the export of arms and related material as well as banning new investment in the country's oil and gas sector.

"The sanctions that Canada and other countries have placed are beginning to have a real effect, not just on oil but on banking," said Baird.

Im getting sick of helping Israel. The Iranians pose no to North America what so ever. They have a history of not attacking anyone. Israel provides no benefits what so ever to North America. It is Canadian taxes payer's money and soldiers who will be wasted over there. We need to start talking about a new foreign policy that so that we can save money to help struggling communities in this country and not over in that dam desert thousands of kilometers away. This is just more war propaganda to help Israel.

I am almost getting tired of commenting about the upcoming war with Iran, but here it is once again. It is time to stop the rampant murder, theft, and wars in the middle east. The American government has been sticking their greedy fingers in everyones pie for the past 40 years, and the enemies that are real, and imagined, are a construct of their own foreign policy. Canada needs to stand on its own feet, stop bending over for American, and Iraeli interests, and find its own moral backbone. Granted we didnt jump right into Iraq when the USA was lying about their weapons of mass destruction, no instead we went to Afghanistan for G.O.D. and country, the only problem being their G.O.D. is Gold, Oil, Drugs, and the country was America. So now there are close to 100,000 foreign troops lined up along the Iranian borders, the Americans, and Israeli black ops (mossad), along with their allies are blowing up infrastructure with covert missions, assasinating Iranian scientists and public officials. Who are the real terrorists here, I would have to say it is those that are instigating this conflict. What would the USA do if a foreign power like China was running black op teams, assasination missions, and general terrorism in the good ole US of A, I am almost certain they would be launching missles and going to war, that is until China calls in the USA debt. Time for Canada to grow a pair and tell the Globalists to piss off. Malo periculosam libertatem quam quietum servitium.

There exists an iconic photograph that many Israeli military officers hang in their offices. It's image epitomizes Israel's commitment to self defence; it is three Israeli F-15's flying in formation avoce the gates of Auschwitz. The facts are these; Israel had no capacity to defend itself against the Nazis and over 6 million were murdered in the most barbaric way imaginable. Today, a similar number of Jews face the greatest threat to their security since the Holocaust. Israel will simply NEVER allow Iran to have a nuclerar weapon, Ever. If sanctions fail, and I suspect they will given the fanatacism that exists within the entrenched Islamic Facism that defines the very nature of this dreadful regime, then a military strike is inevitable. Hang on folks; this could be one ugly ride. The middle-east has never been more unstable and I see ominous storm clouds forming on the horizon. If this does flash then we could be looking at the biggest global conflict since the World War Two.

As usual Canada and specially this PC government and the West, continue to be a poppet of the U.S. And please let’s not be innocent about what is happening in the world. The world is driven by economic and political interests. The U.S. and Israel are military nations end their market is wars. They are going to continue and pushing for more of them as long as other countries allow them to continue. Why is the West and Canada allowing Israel, one of the most international law breakers in the world, (to call it one way) to continue its unlawful control of Palestine? Because unfortunately we are politically and economically controlled by them. Very sad but true!

There is no question that Iran's main goal is to attain nuclear weapons and it is Iran's goal to destroy the nation of Israel. If anyone thought for a minute that Iran is a peaceful nation who's only nuclear ambitions are to attain nuclear energy, then you are only fooling yourself. Iran (backed by Russia and China) will use nuclear weapons, they will unleash them onto Israel. Iran's goal is to be the superpower of the entier Persian Gulf Region and the entire Middle East and they will use their military power to muscle their way into power. We all remember history of what Hitler was doing with the Jews in Europe, but we didn't want to believe it until it was too late and now again, it appears as if we may see history repeat itself if we don't stop this before it happens. Canada is doing the right thing this time by standing up with Israel nd democracy and we as Canadians are part of the defenders of democracy.

To any who think that Israel will be destroyed by its enemies, think again. The God promised to restore Israel, bringing them back home after the Romans exiled them, he promised in his time to bring them back to their promised land, just as he did when they were taken captive to Ninaveh and Babylon and he also promised that they would never be destroyed or sent into exile again for the strong arm of the Lord would protect them. Iran, Syria, Russia, Egypt and all the others who want to wipe Israel off of the map themselves will be destroyed.

Am only musing here: Baird talks as if Canada can play a major role in shaping Middle East affairs. He and his leader, our Prime Minister seem, at times, to be almost bellicose in dealing with the Iranians and the Palestinians, promising unanimous Canadian support for anything Middle Eastern so long as it is towards Israel. Wrongly, we must add, as I would like to see how unanimous all Canadians are towards this policy. Before Baird pipes off at the Iranians or anybody else from the Middle East he should have the armies of tens of thousands, the new jet fighters they want but are not yet flying, the armaments, the navy and all so that we can back up what he says. Otherwise, stop being bellicose, express opinions but if you want to express any indignation about another country be able to support your statements to the fullest. I don't think Canadians want any more militaristic turmoil so let's stop, Mr. Baird, with this rhetoric.

Obama will not take action on Iran. That war would prove to be more expensive than Iraq, Iran and Vietnam put together and no doubt that Israel will be wiped off the map. It is estimated that there are 200,000 missiles pointed at Israel at this very moment. This does not even include the tens of thousands of missiles that will be launched from Lebanon. Perhaps the no-longer-pro-Isreal Egypt will have militants firing off their own weapons. I am convinced that this SHOW is more bark than bite. No, there will be no attack on Iran. Days will go by, months will go buy, and then suddenly, like the case with North Korea, the world will witness a nucleur test. A new era of power balance will emerge from the Middle east. I personally wish the Iranians luck. I think that their intentions are honourable but their methods are desperate and argueably reckless.

Everybody knows that Iran will carpet bomb Israel - experts estimate that Israel will be completely descimated. The war option is obviously bogus and chest pounding to give the Israeli people a sense of hope but there is no such hope. The solution has always been and will always be to settle with the Palestinians. ALL the hostilities in the region are rooted from the Palestinian and Israeli conflict. Israel better back down and stop building settlements in Palestinian territory because its not going to be a recking ball rolling into the neighbourhood to evict, it will be mushroom cloud - but anyway, the bible predicts Israel will be wiped out to pave the way for Jesus Christs second coming. Although I am not a religious person, I do believe many people in power are deliberately trying to ensure the prophesy comes true. Nobody is budging or compromising because they want this war.

"Naturally, the common people don't want war; neither in Russia nor in England nor in America, nor for that matter in Germany. That is understood. But, after all, it is the leaders of the country who determine the policy and it is always a simple matter to drag the people along, whether it is a democracy or a fascist dictatorship or a Parliament or a Communist dictatorship. ...voice or no voice, the people can always be brought to the bidding of the leaders. That is easy. All you have to do is to tell them they are being attacked, and denounce the pacifists for lack of patriotism and exposing the country to danger. It works the same way in any country.[" - Hermann Göring
