OTTAWA — NDP leadership hopeful Paul Dewar has snagged the support of one of the his party's most effective parliamentary performers.

Charlie Angus, the veteran MP from Timmins-James Bay, has endorsed Dewar's bid to fill the shoes left by Jack Layton's death last August.

Angus is responsible for bringing national attention to the appalling living conditions in the Attawapiskat First Nation, which is located in his northern Ontario riding.

He's also largely responsible for keeping the heat on Treasury Board President Tony Clement over a controversial $50-million fund which spread money around Clement's riding prior to the 2010 G8 summit.

The popular MP briefly flirted with running for the leadership himself.

Dewar is making Angus his deputy, putting him in charge of building support for the New Democrats in the 70 additional ridings the party needs to capture to win a majority government.

The Ottawa MP says Angus is the perfect person to engage what Dewar calls Canada's "real majority."

"They're Canadians who work hard to pay their taxes and look after their family but they're being left out by (Prime Minister) Stephen Harper."

Angus said he believes Dewar is the best choice to carry on Layton's work because he "connects with families and their priorities."

"He brings to the table the kind of ideas, energy and leadership that a majority of Canadians are looking for from their government."

Dewar is one of eight contenders in the NDP leadership contest, which will culminate with a vote by all party members on March 24.

The NDP has turned into a rump party from Quebec led by Nicole Turmoil who has done a questionable job at leading them off the political cliff. The truth is Jack Layton was a great showman in the NDP carney roadshow but he didn't have any depth or grasp of what Canada needs to be a truly great country following the horrible job the Libs did to it and neither does the NDP which is why they are tanking now that their roadshow is over.

This is exciting. The best parliamentarian of the past couple years supporting the NDP Leadership candidate who has the greatest foresight and strategy as to how to make this country a better place.

Oh my goodness the Prime Minister must be cringing in his boots with the thought that Paul Dewar, with his many years of extensive traing and experience as a schoolteacher might be facing him in an election. And with Charlie "I always come late to the party" Angus as his deputy this is a formidable NDP duo. What a farce!! Another important news breaking event from Canada's left wing media gang.

Charlie Angus, the do nothing MP who is trying to lay the blame for inadequate native housing on the Federal Govt. after his seven years of non action on the same problem , his endorsement should be the first step on the road to defeat.

It seems he NDP party is all about Quebec. I realize that most of it's seats are there but what about Dippers in the rest of Canada...they must be feeling totally left out and ignored...who will they turn to for their Utopia? Will Angus endorsement really help...I think people are tired of Charlie's whining considering he did nothing about that reserve for 7 years.

Well their goes Dewar's leadership hopes. Isn't Angus the back stabber that initially voted in favour of basic property rights then voted against it when C-391 had it's third reading?

Do you really expect that a grade 5 teacher should lead a National Party, Give me a break, the only claim to fame of Dewar is that his mother was Mayor of Ottawa.

MP Charley Angus was the MP who ran on voting to get rid of the gun registry to get elected. When the vote came, he turned traitor on his constituents and voted to keep it. The same Angus who in 2005 suggested to send sports equipment to Attawapiskat. The MP who is building a name for himself on his never ending soap box. Quebec is dumping the NDP now, as most of Canada has.

Neither of these guys has any idea how to run a government. They are socialist neophytes who believe in the nanny state. Look what they believe in. The middle class would be bankrupted under an NDP led government.

This is VERY exciting news...if you're a delusional NDP supporter who believes that the party is on a political rocket to planet Utopia and not a parachute-less skydive to planet Earth.

Just finished reading in today's newspaper former Jean Lappierre (Liberal) from Quebec believes that the NDP would have better results with putting Thomas Mulcair in as Leader..the others are NOT known in the Province of Quebec and this is where most of their votes are and he is fluent in both languages.

It is about time - as a grandparent I have watched our kids (who were allowed to fail although I do remember some nagging on our part) learn, I have watched our children now micro-manage their children. A big part of it is the fact that there are predators out there and an extreme reluctance on the parents part to alllow freedom that might result in the children becoming victims.
