The ex-girlfriend of former foreign affairs minister Maxime Bernier claims he asked her to toss out confidential government documents in the garbage.
Bernier resigned as foreign affairs minister May 26, hours before Julie Couillard revealed he had left government documents in her apartment in mid-April. She didn't return them to the government until May 25.
Couillard, in her soon-to-be released autobiography "My Story," said Bernier pulled the documents out of his briefcase after they'd spent the night together.
She said he then asked her to throw them out on garbage day.
"That blend of vanity and flippancy was just like the Maxime I knew," she said.
"It was as if he had said to me, 'Look at me, I'm a minister of the Crown. I'm somebody incredibly important walking around with ultra-confidential documents in his briefcase, but I'm above all that. You see what I'm doing with them?"'
Couillard said the pair had split four months earlier but still slept together on occasion.
The pair first made headlines in 2007, when Bernier brought Couillard -- in a revealing dress -- to his swearing-in ceremony for the cabinet.
In her book, Couillard also claims Bernier often criticized Conservative Leader Stephen Harper's weight and choice of clothing.
She says Bernier thought Harper had a bad sense of style, was fat and unhealthy and drank too much Pepsi.
She says Bernier didn't think Harper would survive his first term as PM and that Bernier thought he'd replace him as Tory leader.
Also, Couillard says Bernier was happy about their relationship because some of his colleagues thought he was gay.
"On the Hill, people are whispering that I'm gay," she quotes Bernier as saying. "Now they'll see that I have a girlfriend."
On Afghanistan, Couillard says Bernier was opposed to the war in Afghanistan and that he made negative remarks about his constituents in the Beauce area, south of Quebec City.
Couillard also addresses her links to men who were either members of outlaw biker gangs or who had close ties to that world.
Bernier has denied any knowledge of Couillard's past, saying he learned about it after they broke up. But Couillard says she told Bernier about her past early on in their relationship.
"There were no 'oohs' and 'ahs,' not even so much as a raised eyebrow," she said. "No questions. He seemed only barely surprised. "Say what you will but not everybody can claim to have had a spouse who was murdered."
In a statement Wednesday, Bernier, who is running for re-election, said the claims in the book were "completely ridiculous."
"During my mandate and despite my busy schedule as a member of Parliament and a minister, the most rewarding part of my job has always been to return to my riding several times per month in order to meet and exchange with the people that I so proudly represent," said Bernier.
"Everywhere I went, I've always expressed the pride that I feel for the people of Beauce. It is very disappointing that this person would insult me and the people of Beauce in the way that she has."
Before Bernier resigned, he had come under fire for other high-profile missteps as foreign affairs minister.
Last April, during a trip to Afghanistan, he suggested Afghan President Hamid Karzai should fire the governor of Kandahar, where most of Canada's troops are based.
He later backed away from his comment, saying, "Afghanistan is a sovereign state that makes its own decisions about government appointments."
A month later, he promised to make one of Canada's C-17 military cargo aircraft available to transport aid to Burma's cyclone survivors. But none of the four aircraft were available and the government had to spend $1 million to rent a Russian cargo aircraft.
Couillard's 320-page book hits store shelves in English and French on Oct. 6 and will retail for $29.99.

It is about time - as a grandparent I have watched our kids (who were allowed to fail although I do remember some nagging on our part) learn, I have watched our children now micro-manage their children. A big part of it is the fact that there are predators out there and an extreme reluctance on the parents part to alllow freedom that might result in the children becoming victims.

Harper had many other reasons to call an election now. Events approaching made a later election call dangerous. The key reason was probably the economic downturn and the need to have the vote before the conservative republican caused recession hits.
Another reason was anticipated revelations on the Cadman story. Then there's the Elections Canada in and out issue- but then you probably believe the conservative party line that liberal sympathizers are to blame. And what about the report on the AECL reactor issue and political interference in that organization. There's a lot of potential bad news in the pipeline, which could have destroyed the chances of Harper winning.

Its not the Liberals who dug up the story and had it printed in newspapers across Canada and viewed on every tv network. More of the newspapers and tv stations who reported the story are owned by influential conservatives than by liberals. They may have wanted to bury the story, but they couldn't because it sold so many papers and increased viewership.
One can rightfully question Couillard's motives. Obviously she's trying to cash in financially. She has however absolutely no connection to the Liberal Party. It was the conservatives who were trying to recruit her and it was a conservative minister she was dating.
Anyone who claims she is part of a liberal smear would have to believe that Couillard was in reality, a super-secret operative for the Liberal Party, specifically sent to infiltrate and discredit the conservatives. And if the Liberals were really that determined and on the ball, how did they lose the last election.

By the way, for all the conservatives supporters who are trying to put Couillard's credibilty in question, remember it was the Conservative Party of Canada who was scouting Couillard as a potential candidate in Quebec. If she is indeed all the things which you say she is, then what does that say about the Conservative Party, or the judgement of its leadership.

They'll spend all of your hard earned money and then boast about what a great job they did....over and over and over.
And let's not forget about those CONS candidates (and MPs) who steal the work of others and pass it off as their own.

It's too bad that literature doesn't require corroboration from independent sources prior to printing. Even more concerning is that media outlets would cover this and present it to the ignorant public who eat it up as fact.
Who knows, maybe she's got 2 weeks to live and the Liberals have offered her a life insurance policy.

Trudeau's exploits /girlfriends including Margaret's no underwear/disco hopping days didnt bring him down - he still lead the country and was defeated on policy then retired....Mr Chretien "strangle holded" a disenter and still went on as PM ..... You tolerated Adscam .. the LIBERALS brought us into the war, the Liberals didnot cut the GST etc etc ... but this issue is critical ... puuuuulease why is this relevant ?! I do believe once they are revealed as irresponsible and could pose a threat to our nation then it does become public interest.
It is not only the fact that Couillard had these documents it is the fact that she was able to get them.
People go in to various organizations for different reasons .This does mean government positions.
I ask ,did Bernier accept the role of foreign affairs for the country or for other reasons?

As to those who thik this a reason not to vote for conservatives,I heartily disagree.Mr.Harper has fewer options when choosing a cabinet because he has fewer MP's,and has a new party in office.Personally, even as someone who usually voted Liberal in the past,I prefer to take my chances that his party will grow, mature and move closer to the views of more moderate Canadians as time goes by.I have a lot more fear of socialists than I do of Harper.
These days,it seems like the Liberals have recognized they have a policy platform that not many people want.So all they can do to get back in office is trash talk their opponents.
For me,it only serves to reinforce my view that they are unfit to govern.

As far as Stephen Harper's responsibility is concerned, I would be very insulted if my boss questioned me about my sex life before hiring me. My boss has a right to expect a certain amount of professional behaviour, and Harper, I assume, expected the same from Maxime.
Whether the party is Conservative or Liberal, leaders have a right to expect a certain level of common sense from the people working with them.
For God's sake, Maxime, next time think with your brain.

"Neo-con"?? Really. Some people have been listening to Ralf Goodale to long.I doubt most people in Canada have ever seen a real "neo con" even running for office, never mind actually winning a seat.Get real.
As to holding Mr.Harper accountable, how exactly does the poster suggest we do that?Surely you can't be suggesting we return those incompetent, thieving Liberals back to office.
I'm not fond of Harper and I am not a coservative.I think Liberals need to look in the mirror if they want to see why Harper won the last election. After a life time of supporting them,I'm sick of their drift towards socialism. If I wanted a socialist party,I would vote NDP.
The Liberals (aka NDP Lite) will not rebuilt into a party near the political centre unless they are completely decimated in the same way voters did to the old PC party. If,or when that happens,I may consider supporting them again. Not before then.
So,if Mr.Harper is in office, don't blame him.He is a Conservative who stands by what he believes as best as he can.Blame the socialists who have taken over the former Liberal party. They are responsible for giving a lot of voters no choice but to vote for Mr.Harper.
There is no "none of the above" box on the ballot.

I am glad you brought this information to light. NATO documents should be kept safe as they involve the very security of our soldiers and country. I wish that both Harper and Bernier had shown better judgement.
It is a shame that you, Julie, will be smeared with every dirty name for exposing this circus. I expect no less from the commentators in the Conservative camps. Reminds me of the days when Ms. Stronach crossed the floor.

With that said, lets look at the facts here. Coillard is making all sorts of claims that would lead one to beleive that Bernier is a terrible human being, yet, despite her obvious distain for Bernier, she also states that she continued to sleep with him after their relationship was over. Im sorry but this does not add up. She is obviously out to hurt the man now, and I place very little credibility in anything she says. What evidence does she have to back up her claims?
All we can deduce from this is that Bernier picked a lousy girlfriend, and exercised poor care and judgement with confidential files. This is not a reflection of the Conservative party or the Government. What is Harper supposed to do, prescreen everyones girlfriends/boyfriends? What right would he have to do so?

I do not fault Bernier for dating Couillard, I think he was duped. I do fault him for taking/leaving a briefcase of confidential matter to his girlfriend's apartment.
Bernier has quit so why is the media still reporting this stale story?

I guess TRUTH all depends on what argument for or against you would try to make of this story.
Personally, Julie Couillard has demonstrated she is an opportunist in that she writes a book to make a buck from her relationship with a well known characeter. To make the book sell it has to have sensationalism otherwise it doesnt sell.
With that as her credentials I wouldn't give a whole lot of credibility to this story for containing any validated degree of TRUTH.
I do question the timing of all this however and it seems to point to the Liberal war room.

I just see two bitter people who have their knives drawn and are ready to slice and dice instead of moving on.
Take time to think of some relationships you have either been in or have observed, they can get pretty ugly fast...
This is more about who draws the most blood than anything...
As for credibility... I have found that the one who has the most to say is the one who wants to still be in the relationship most... even though what they say seems to contradict this....
Ah, love can be so much fun...

When will you hold Harper to any standards? Everything he or his MP's do is OK with you - not telling the truth, suing those who investigate him, yet your Mr. Law & Order always seems to act like he is above the law, even his own laws (this election, plagerism, listeriosis, campaign fraud, possible bribery - a felony if his own recorded words are true, false advertising re Dion & Liberal policies - the list is endless.
As for Bernier - he opened his big mouth in Afghanistan in public telling them they should fire a member of their government for being incompetent, insulting the Afghans - completely stupid, incompetent actions for a Canadian foreign minister, lack of judgement again on Harpers part for giving him that post - not qualified!
... Time for Canadians to hold Harper accountable for a change, without changing the channel!
