Quebec dentists are threatening to opt out of the provincial health insurance plan in 30 days if they don't get more money to deal with rising dental costs.

Dr. Serge Langlois, the president of the Quebec association of dental surgeons (Association des chirurgiens dentistes du Québec), says more than 2,300 of the province's 3,600 dentists are ready to pull out of the program and more are signing up each day.

Under the current health system in Quebec, dental care is provided for free to those on social assistance and to children under the age of 10. If the dentists were to pull out of medicare, those patients would have to pay for their dental costs out of pocket.

Dentists have been without an agreement since 2003. The association wants to increase its fee scale by at least 35 per cent to address rising dental care costs. Reports suggest that the province has offered a 24 per cent raise in billing fees, which the dentists refused.

Montreal dentist John Drummond says about 25 per cent of his clientele are children.

"The overhead costs of most offices are running between 60 and 70 per cent, and they're really only paying us between 50 and 65 per cent of what we would normally be charging," Drummond told CTV Montreal on Monday.

"So it's really an issue that they're covering the overhead, but not covering anything else that we're doing."

He says currently, dentists in Quebec make only about $10 an hour when they see a child or person on welfare.

"I've been in the dentistry business for 25 years and there's been basically no change in what we get paid by the government," said Drummond.

The Quebec Association of Dental Surgeons says it is already hearing about cases where some dentists are refusing to see younger patients or are postponing appointments for those on social assistance.

"We are not extravagant. We just want a fair renumeration," said Dr. Daniel Pelland, the association's executive-director.

The goal is to recoup about 80 per cent of what it costs them to treat those covered by the province.

At present, the remuneration rate is about 67 per cent.

"The dentists have always given a discount to the government because it was seen as a contribution to society,'' Langlois told a news conference.

"But our objective is to get a remuneration that is equal to 80 per cent of what is charged in the private sector.''

The dentists say they're still hoping for a deal before they pull out of medicare but are giving the government until March 27 to improve their offer. Right now, the average salary of a dentist in Quebec is $125,000.

But not every dentist is threatening to opt out. Drummond says he'll stay on out of concern for his young patients.

"The incentive is you treat the kids and then the parents become patients and the parents aren't covered by medicare and you charge regular fees for them."

What do they mean by "rising dental costs"?

Does it cost more to scale a tooth now? As far as I know they are still using the same equipment and methods as they have 5-10 years ago?

I guess I can never understand or have pity for people earning about 100K a year or more..Yes they earned it and they studied, but they should be thankful they get what they do and shut up about it!

I am a dentist.

As the article says, upto 70% of fees that a dentists collects goes to pay for overhead. So don't be fooled into thinking that dentists make exorbant amounts of money.

Unlike physicians who only need to buy cotton balls and popsicle sticks, dentists must buy expensive lasers, x-ray machines, and dental supplis. People do not realize just how expensive this type of material has become.

Dentists make a good living... but rightly so. They invest in 8 years of training just to become a general dentist, and upto an addition 6 years for specializations.

Quebec, stop making dentists pay for your socialist policies.

I am a dental student at the University of Western Ontario in London.

I pay $35,000 per year for 4 years in tuition and instrument fees. I will graduate with 150k in debt.

I would not work in a province where I would $10/hour. I can make that working at macdonalds. I sure as heck wont work for $10/hour after investing in 8 years of post-secondary education.

Quebec, get you act in shape and stop taking advantage of dentists.

I had to go to the dentist about 4 months ago. I had 2 fillings done behind my bottom front teeth. I thought it would cost around $ 200.00 or $ 250.00.
After the check up, I alomost hit the floor when I was told the total cost was $ 595.00. Holly crap!!
For 1 and a half hours.
My dentist does a wonderful job. No complaints there.
If I want a dental plan throught my insurance at work. It will cost about $180.00 a month!
The health care system must be revamped to add more $ for dentists.
Everyone should have the chance for healthy teeeth. :)

Lucky Quebecers that have some coverage like that. Try being in Ontario - no plan, and likely no affortability for a dentist. The working poor? forget even their children getting proper dental care. What dentists charge is OUTRAGEOUS. And someone's comment is correct, forget a payment plan, you are sneered at if you ask - dentists and their staff all act like we have money trees in the backyard dedicated to dental care.

as a former quebec dental graduate i left the province 30 years ago due to the unrealistic fee's that RAMQ paid in those days not much has changed since then the quebec governments have to realize there is no free ride if you want care you need to pay for it

As far as I am concerned Quebec dentists are well paid and should not complain. My dentist probably makes more than my GP, has a lot less responsabilities and is far less stressed. Why should she be stressed? We pay her, or I should say my insurance pays her an outrageous amount of money for the work that she does. If, God forbid, you ask for a payment plan she will never accomodate you. why do we have a medicare plan for the whole body, which does not include the teeth? Dentists have no idea how lucky they are.

It is about time - as a grandparent I have watched our kids (who were allowed to fail although I do remember some nagging on our part) learn, I have watched our children now micro-manage their children. A big part of it is the fact that there are predators out there and an extreme reluctance on the parents part to alllow freedom that might result in the children becoming victims.
