Question, where was the passangers left and right of this moron? Wake up, be aware of your surroundings: smoke, noise like a fire cracker in a pillow, man on fire... The hero came from rows/seats away! A lot of others should be held accountable for setting by saying and doing nothing throughout this event.

Nigerian man charged with trying to blow up plane

Date: Sat. Dec. 26 2009 7:53 PM ET

Umar Farouk Abdulmutallab, a 23-year-old Nigerian, has been charged in relation to an attempt to blow up a Detroit-bound plane carrying 278 passengers.

The Justice Department charged him with willful attempt to destroy an aircraft and with placing a destructive device on an aircraft.

U.S. District Judge Paul Borman read the charges to Abdulmutallab in a conference room of an Ann Arbor, Michigan hospital Saturday, where he is being treated for burns.

An affidavit said Abdulmutallab had an explosive devise attacked to his body, and preliminary analysis of the device said it contained PETN, also known as pentaerythritol.

It was the same material used by attempted shoe bomber Richard Reid in a 2001 attempt to bring down a plane.

Abdulmutallab smiled when he was brought into the hospital conference room and had bandages on his left thumb and right wrist.

The judge asked Abdulmutallab if he understood the charges.

"Yes, I do," came the reply in English.

The judge said a public defender would be assigned to him and there would be another hearing on Jan. 8.

Attorney General Eric Holder said the U.S. will "use all measures available to our government to ensure that anyone responsible for this attempted attack is brought to justice."

U.S. officials have said that the suspect came to their attention in November when his father went to the U.S. embassy in Nigeria and expressed concerns that his son was radicalized.

However, the information did not put the suspect on a "no -fly list" nor was his visa to visit the U.S. revoked. It was granted in June 2008 and valid until June 2010.

Abdulmutallab is in the U.S.'s Terrorist Identities Datamart Environment database, which contains some 550.000 names. The database includes people known to be terrorists, or those suspected of having ties to a terrorist organization.

Abdulmutallab 's father said his son was a student in London, then left to travel abroad.

"I believe he might have been to Yemen, but we are investigating to determine that," Alhaji Umaru Mutallab told The Associated Press.

Yemen, an unstable country south of Saudi Arabia, has been increasingly seen as a safe haven for al Qaeda.

Intelligence and anti-terrorism officials are investigating claims that the suspect was given the explosive device and instructions in Yemen.

The elder Alhaji Umaru Mutallab, who served as chairman of First Bank of Nigeria from 1999 through this month, is cooperating with authorities in their investigation.

University College London issued a statement Saturday saying a student identified as Umar Farouk Abdulmutallab, took mechanical engineering there from September 2005 to June 2008.

London's Metropolitan Police is assisting in the investigation, U.S. officials said.

Mutallab allegedly tried to bring down a Northwest plane using an explosive device as it was making its descent on Detroit.

Although his name is not on any no-fly lists, he is reported to have popped up on counter-terrorism databases.

Smoke and fire on plane

The flight, which originated in Nigeria and had stopped in Amsterdam, was beginning its descent into the Detroit area just before noon on Friday, when passengers noticed a man attempting to use an explosive device made up of a powdery substance and liquid.

Travelers said they smelled smoke, saw a glow, and heard what sounded like firecrackers.

"It sounded like a firecracker in a pillowcase," said Peter Smith, a passenger told reporters. "First there was a pop, and then (there) was smoke."

The device failed, but the man had lit his thigh area on fire. Another passenger leaped over seats to put the fire out, and the flight crew assisted him in subduing the man.

Various media outlets have identified the heroic passenger as Jasper Schuringa, a Dutch filmmaker.

"Without any hesitation, I just jumped over all the seats," Schuringa told CNN, in a story confirmed by other passengers.

"I was thinking, 'Oh, he's trying to blow up the plane.' I was trying to search his body for any explosive. I took some kind of object that was already melting and smoking, and I tried to put out the fire and when I did that I was also restraining the suspect."

Authorities in the United States believe this was an attempted act of terrorism and stricter security measures were quickly imposed on airline travel.

Air Canada and WestJet have imposed similar measures in Canada on all U.S.-bound flights.

Technology should be upgraded

Douglas Laird, the former security director at Northwest Airlines, told CTV News Channel that upgrades in technology at airports, including body scanning, is the only way to keep passengers the safest because in today's world, metal detectors are not enough.

"You walk through a metal detector and that machine will identify metal on your person, but it fails however to identify liquids and powders," he said in a phone interview.

He explained that body scanning, which is being tested at five Canadian airports, can catch whether a passenger is hiding something in their pockets or underneath their clothes.

He said that polls show Americans don't want their bodies scanned, and it is up to safety authorities to "do a better job of explaining to the American flying public why it is that we need new technology."

Well done! The passengers should be given medals! But - here we go again! More restrictions, delays and expenses for 99.99% of passengers because we can't use racial profiling and other means which might offend or infringe on someone's rights. Terrorists and criminals will continue to have the upper hand, while the rest of us have our freedoms eroded.

Yes i applaud the passengers that restrained this selfish idiot from blowing up hundreds of innocent people, but i only have one question. How the F@#K did he get this explosive device onto the plane in the first place? Considering even to travel in Canada from one province to another province we are throughly searched which i agree with. What the hell is this world coming to?

Why is it that we have to be scanned and subject to potentially damaging radiation? Why can't they use sniffer dogs at every airport? I'd rather be sniffed than radiated. Sniffer dogs are amazing - I've seen them in action. I see no reason why the use of dogs, which is less invasive, could not be used for all flights.

People who travel by plane know how fast and convenient it is. From Thunder Bay to Toronto, it only takes 1 hr. & 35 minutes, by car or bus it takes 28 hrs. More security is needed at the boarding points especially the hand baggage, no one should be allowed to carry hand baggage and chemicals should not be allowed on board including mixtures that could ignite materials used in the construction of the cabin of the plane. Lets enjoy the skys and look out the tiny windows without fear or prejudice from Arabs or Africans.

The warning signs were missed by the security experts, and we all pay the price. The would-be bomber's father told the US Embassy in Nigeria that his son had become radicalized, but he was still allowed to fly to the US in spite of being on a terrorist watch-list. The price we all pay, in Canada and around the world, is new restrictions on our ability to travel. The costs to us, as individuals, are missed flights, lost time, lost days with loved ones, and decisions not to travel at all. The costs to us, as Canadians, are more money spent on security, losses to Airlines as they struggle to cope, and a further increase of fear and paranoia as the terrorists win again.

WOW to the writer of the comment about take the train or bus!! Your comments are uneducated at best. I for one would not like to be treated like a common criminal each and everytime I travelled by air. I'd like to see a bus or train make it to Hawaii from Vancouver. That would be impressive. To the writer that thinks we should have segregated sections for men and women/kids, again; uneducated at best. Do you not think that there are women and children being used as sucide bombers? Please follow the news in the Mid-East there have been many instances of women and kids being used as bombers against NATO troops. So guess what, we all suffer as a result of these extremists. Support those that are overseas trying to put an end to this so that you can CONTINUE to live a normal life.I hope that the individual responsible for this gets 278 counts of attempted murder to start off with! With a sentence to carry out consecutively.

What about a kudos to this guy's dad for warning authorities? I see the normal hysteria of racism and ignorance is getting it's fair share of CTV posts. Buddy, if you think young Muslim men are not being profiled, I have some swamp land in Florida to sell you. They're already being profiled. This guy was on the terror watch list and Security missed it. But, it's predictable that you lump all Muslim men into a category where a crime was committed by ONE man. You wouldn't be white and male and North American if you weren't an ignorant racist -- see how I profiled you? Very clever and effective. To the brainiac who is spouting Bush propaganda -- this guy was most likely radicalized AFTER Georgie the war criminal killed, falsely imprisoned, raped and murdered tens of thousands of Muslims. Get off your pedestal and your high horse, you have blood on your hands. The only way to stop these "terrorist" incidents is to stop killing "them" over there so they won't feel the need to retaliate over here.

I applaud the passengers who reacted so quickly and restrained this guy. People like him should be locked up for life. No second chances. As for the body scanning, I, personally, have no problem with it as long as it isn't misused. Then again, I'm not the one trying to smuggle drugs, explosives, weapons, etc onto airplanes. I just want to get to where I'm going in one piece and, preferably, breathing.

The alleged bombers nationality and his apparent origination in Nigeria raises immediate questions about airport security in Africas most populous country, where corruption, organized crime and crumbling infrastructure have long hobbled an otherwise oilrich government.Just remeber everyone the problem did not come from Canada.Nigeria and West Africa a corner of Africa al Qaeda so far hasnt put down significant roots, I repeat No Al Qaeda in Nigeria or West Africa, or in the corner of Africa. Ethiopian and U.S. intervention in Somalia was justified to the international public under the pretext of fighting terrorism and al Qaeda. Ethiopia has become a regional surrogate or proxy for the United States and Britain. This is evident from the coordination of the U.S. military and Ethiopian troops in Somalia. The ICU is a classic intelligence fabrication. It was armed by none other than Victor Bout described as the world’s biggest illegal arms dealer. Bout worked with CIA front companies in Afghanistan. He also worked with the United Nations and African warlords. Obama has defined the Africom mission to be within in the parameters of U.S. national security and the larger globalist agenda. America has a responsibility to advance this vision not just with words, but with support that strengthens African capacity. When there is genocide in Darfur or terrorists in Somalia, these are not simply African problems they are global security challenges, and they demand a global response he said during a speech delivered on July 11, 2009. Obama also added :Our Africa Command is focused not on establishing a foothold in the continent, but on confronting these common challenges to advance the security of America, Africa and the world. White House statement said:Obama the PEACE prize Winner considers yesterday’s incident as an attempted terrorist attack.

It's difficult to imagin how this glitch in security procedures could have occured. This goes to confirm that no security system is fool-proof. How this guy could have beaten the sytem by by-passing all those metal detectors and state-of-the arts scanners send shivers through every traveler's bones. But then again, a similar incident took place a few years after 9/11.You remember the guy with suspecious shoes? We just need to be more observant and make this a collective effort towards mitigating such threats.

Airline security - why is Security Canada or whomever not providing passengers with guidelines as to what to do in this kind of incident? Lets be a little more proactive; it may save a life or two. Or don't they know what to do yet? Astounding for the billions spent already on security measures and they still get through. Doing the same things and expecting different results is a sign of something.

Three cheers to the passenger and then crew for getting the jump on an amateur. However, I have not heard anyone state the obvious - profiling young, Moslem men is one key way of dealing with this kind of issue. Pouring out Mom's baby formula or patting down grandpa is not going to do it. It just wastes time and resources. How foolish and ineffective have we become in the name of political correctness.

Thank you to Jasper Schuringer for your quick thinking and actions in preventing the near in-air disaster. The airline and its insurers should grant some free air travel to this man for obvious reasons. Shame on the FAA for not better protecting the passengers on that flight. Why are there no sky marshalls on board? Please screen people a little more beforehand and keep an eye out during the flight. These are desperate times.

Politicians have already decided who’s going to be blamed, and who’s going to pay the price. And once again — just like 9/11 — it won’t be the perpetrators. World War Is Just Around The Corner...Please understand my fellow Canadians War is needed for all to forget this Massive Finacial Collapse that is happening. The primary lesson from September 11th, of course, is that logic, evidence, and science are all past their prime. Therefore, we don’t use forensic evidence or investigation to solve crimes anymore; we label the crimes acts of war, destroy the Climate E-Mails, Tax the average citizen to death and attack defenseless countries instead.

I have a great solution:
1) have a section on the plane reserved for men only. No books, no blankets, no gadgets, no carry on.
2) have another section for ladies and children where we can fly like normal human beings with all the "extras".
Never heard of any lady doing anything this stupid - so why should we be punished??

If Americans were not so fat, maybe they would not mind body searches so much. I am a Canadian and I feel that if a body search of each and every passenger will keep my plane from going down, so be it. I am not shy. I want to keep on living.

I have lots of trouble believing that this naive story is true! How can this person, who is already on a watch list, smuggle the explosives he attempted to use? Please give us a break. This incident was literally "created" probably by some Western inteliigence services to keep the sense of fear in the US and Canada. Merry Christmas everyone and do not allow "them" to spoil your holidays! P.S. I will be surprise if "they" allow this comment to be posted!

It's interesting that he was able to get the material on the flight. If people weren't so concerned about "profiling," it probably never would have happened. I hope the passengers who subdued him got some good licks in before he was handed over to police!

The only way they're going to prevent things like this from occurring is if they do two things:1) Ban ALL carry on luggage except for the most trivial items (i.e. a book or magazine) and necessary, clearly marked prescription medication or baby food, etc.2) Get rid of all this technical garbage (metal detectors, x-rays, etc.) in airports and replace it with a manual pat down on every person. If you're offended by this, then guess what? You have no inherent right to board an aircraft, so take the bus or train instead.
