How about a junk food tax? It's been mentioned before... I'd rather have the occasional bit of junk food, free of "extras". If people are too stupid to know that eating chips, chocolate, burgers and fries everyday can make you fat and cause cancer, than maybe a tax would prevent them from eating too much of it. Use the tax to subsidize the healthy food so people can actually afford to get used to eating clean food. This is just shameful

Health Canada may add anti-cancer drug to junk food

Date: Tue. Dec. 22 2009 9:57 PM ET

The federal government is making an unusual proposal. It's suggesting allowing food manufacturers to inject a cancer-fighting drug into fried goodies to counteract a substance in the foods that may be carcinogenic.

Health Canada is inviting public comments until Feb 21 on its idea to allow food manufacturers to add small amounts of the leukemia-fighter asparaginase to foods such as potato chips and french fries.

Research suggests asparaginase reduces the production of acrylamide, a potentially dangerous compound that is created during the high-temperature frying and baking of starchy foods.

Acrylamide made headlines a few years ago when Swedish scientists discovered high levels of it in deep-fried foods. It's thought that the substance is produced accidentally when sugars and other items in potatoes are exposed to high cooking temperatures. It has also been detected in cereals, pastries, cookies, breads, cocoa products and coffee, although at levels far below those in fried potato products, such as chips.

Studies have shown that acrylamide causes cancer in lab mice and rats. But its effect on human health is not clear; several studies have failed to prove that acrylamide is carcinogenic in humans.

Nevertheless, Health Canada is worried about the frying by-product. Earlier this year, it recommended adding acrylamide to the country's toxic substances list. And there are also regulations in the works that would limit levels of the chemical in food.

Rather than regulating acrylamide, food manufacturers would rather be allowed to add small amounts of asparaginase in food.

Asparaginase breaks down asparagine, an amino acid. In leukemia patients, asparagine allows cancer cells to grow. In food, asparagine is key ingredient in the production of acrylamide.

"Studies have definitely shown that using this enzyme in the manufacture of foods reduces the level of acrylamide," nutrition expert Leslie Beck told CTV News.

"Whether, at the end of the day, that reduces our potential, theoretical cancer risks, we don't know."

Health Canada says on its website its scientists have finished a detailed safety assessment on asparaginase and haven't found any health concerns. Asparaginase is destroyed in cooking so it's thought to have no impact on food or those who eat the foods.

Health Canada notes that the enzyme is already used in food manufacturing in the U.S., Australia, New Zealand, and Denmark. And it has been given a favourable evaluation by the Joint U.N. Food and Agriculture Organization /WHO Expert Committee on Food Additives.

Food manufacturers, too, are eager to be given permission to use the adrug as well.

"Food & Consumer Products of Canada has encouraged the federal governemnt to move swiftly towards its approval, as other modern countries in the world have," said the group's senior vice-president, Derek Nighbor.

Health Canada announced over the weekend that it's accepting feedback on the proposal for 75 days. If accepted, new rules could be implemented in six to eight months.

Please don't add more chemicals to our food. This will make people think it's ok to endulge in junk food. Maybe (and it's a big maybe) it helps fight cancer but it does nothing to fight heart disease, obesity, diabetes, etc. Let's put our money towards promoting healthier foods and eating habits that will benefit everyone.

This is virtually forced inoculation. They will eventually make it illegal for you to grow your own food (for "safety reasons, of course) and the only food left is the food with the drugs in it that the government wants you to take. What a joke. If people don't wake up and get government the heck out of our lives, we'll wake up one day wondering how we became just another China police state.

Are you kidding me? you already inject the meat products with soo much stuff that makes people feel more down, more lazy and more unable to stay awake, now they want to inject more chemicals in our food by force?, Life is too short for GODs sake, let us live and eat what we want, who makes you the judge on how we live our lives? You arent GOD and your words and studies arent that important, You are normal people like us so why dont you go inject urselves with your drugs and leave us alone you freaks.

This will ensure everybody is contaminated and I predict the end of the world in 2012!

We live in a really screwed up society. Junk food causes a variety of health problems, kills thousands of people, costs us hundreds of thousands of dollars in heath care. Then we have a natural plant with many health benefits, that has not killed one person in thousands of years & we make that plant illegal because of some cheech & chong movie.

No, I don't wish to have this drug injected into my food. I am a very healthy person and I only eat junk foods once in awhile. I am sure other people eat junk foods once in awhile as well. The government should enforce better eating habits, exercise and lower the cost of healthy foods. I don't want to be forced to take this drug because other people have bad eating habits.

Why are Canadian so accepting to government interference in our daily lives. We already live in a nanny state that apparently has no limits. Let them add these drugs to junk food and next it will be something else. There are way too many people in this country that are content being told what to do and what to think. BTW...what exactly is junk food? We know the obvious but where does it end? Who defines what is junk food...White bread, whip cream, many fruit juices, ice cream, butter, cheese all have high fat content or sugar. Drugging food is a control tactic, shame on the government to suggest it and even more shame on people who support it.

I just love a Government that takes care of everyone equally. They want to keep us healthy by feeding us more drugs in junk food and they want the junk food makers to prosper too. That way the infrastructure of the country and the economy are 'harmonized'...just like the tax. I know this is not the best way to present what I am trying to say, but right now, my dimwit is only capable of so much.

Charles Regina

@ Linda-You are right, we should not have to have the government ban our choices of foods. Banning burger king does not mean you can't make yourself a whopper by buying all the ingredients seperately and making it at home...it just means you don't have that convenient time saver... But what is the point of saving "cooking" time by ordering out when you lessen the time remaining of your life? That being said, however, those foods should have never passed the food & safety regulations if infact they were & are carcinogenic. What they should do, is do an audit on Health Canada. Why say no if you have nothing to hide?Pardon once again, but whoever thought of adding anti-cancer agents to junk food must be completely warped....it makes me sick to my stomach just thinking about it.

YOU WANT TO DO WHAT TO MY FRIES?I remember the first time I had a fast food employee ask me if I'd like to super-size that. I was sitting in my car, talking to a barely understandable teenager on a barely working two-way radio and I had about six minutes to stop, get something to eat and drink, and be back on the road. It was one of "those" days.I looked around to see if I might be on some reality show like the old "Candid Camera" considering I was, at that time, already pushing three hundred pounds and thought the co-incidence of someone asking if I wanted my food super-sized was just a little too co-incidental, I knew I shouldn't be eating fries and cheeseburgers, but I did try to make an effort by getting the diet drink. Supersize indeed! And now they want to put anti-cancer, "suppposed" anti-cancer ingredients in the food. And not the good-for-you-food... oh no. It won't go into the salad will it!?! It will go in the fried foods, which means just dump it into the frying oil. I protest for those of us who may want to eat fries with the thrill of cardiovascular disease waiting in the wings. Like a scratch and win. Are these the killer fries?Personally, and seriously, I don't want the government deciding what "good" stuff should be put in my food, whether the food be healthy or not. I especially resent the idea they should try to make unhealthy food healthier by delivering the cure with the ailment. Just outlaw the unhealthy foods.

I cannot believe this insanity...DO NOT ADD THIS CRAP TO OUR FOOD.If people don't have the good sense to eat unprocessed, not deep fried trans fat laden food (all that great junk food that is making our kids fat and diabetic...you know the stuff - thanks McD et al) then that is THEIR problem. No additives, supposedly cancer fighting or not. Spend the money and energy in educating people to make the right choices. Their own choices.

Boy, does this ever scare me, what are they thinking of, adding drugs to our food. I do not want any "drugs" added by anyone to my food. How many times have the Health Canada touted an anti cancer drug or food, then changed their mind down the road, after determining it was not what it seemed.

I don't think adding this enzyme is necessarily the best thing to do although it might seem like it on the surface. This is superficial. Rather than sending the message that a balanced, varied diet (which involves eating junk food in moderation) is an important part of staying healthy, this has the potential to give people an excuse to continue eating junk food on a regular basis, and a false sense of security . And of course the companies that have invested in these products would prefer to not have health officials controlling levels of acrylamide in their food. It's easier, and more profitable to add the enzyme and slap a label on the box saying " anti-cancer drug added!". This is misleading and minimally educated individuals might misconstrue these messages. When it comes to health, profit and the easy way out is not the way to go. Let's dig to the root of the problem and not simply cover it up.

Why not encourage companies to produce more baked snacks so they can lower the price...they are much better than the fried ones. WIth all due respect to Charles in Regina, there is no way on earth I am ever going to give the government the right to ban my choices if food. Give me a break. If you have concerns,or don't like junk food, just don't eat it. Another tax is an equally poor option. No matter how noble the cause, the fact is,that EVERY tax impoverishes someone. Even the tax on alcohol and tobacco comes with consequences. If a child happens to be unfortunate enough to have parents who smoke,or drink, the taxes on those products take healthy food away from the children. In BC,for example, two smoking parents pay more than $400 per month in taxes on their products. Yes,they should quit. But if they are unwilling or unable to,that $400 is money not available to raise their families. More taxes = more poverty. And that's the case even if the intentions are good. The government should educate, not legislate or tax people into obedience. Let freedom reign. My life,my choice. Your life, your choice. PERIOD

Yeah, because people couldn't just eat junk food in moderation, nooooo. What is with this world nowadays that we need to be hand-held through every single thing like we're a country full of 4 year olds? It's pretty simple, if eating certain things are bad for you, then the intelligent thing to do would be to reduce your intake of those certain bad things. But no, we need someone to come along and inject the food with anti-bad things because we're clearly too moronic to take care of ourselves. Basically its insulting. Let's just cut to the chase, get to the final step and assign a gov't official to follow every person in Canada and slap their hands every time they go to grab a french fry. That's pretty much what its coming to....

"Rather than regulating acrylamide, food manufacturers would rather be allowed to add small amounts of asparaginase in food. "Well of course they would! It all comes down to the almighty dollar and heaven forbid they do anything that would hurt THEIR bottom line. Let's just add one more chemical to the chemical soup we now call food. Wouldn't be surprised if the asparaginase is also a cheap chemical. If Health Canada wanted to do something really spectacular they would force fast food companies to serve REAL food and allow people to buy GOOD food. And while they're at it, they can make sure people have access to local/provincial/national food as opposed to "food" that comes from thousands of miles away that has very little nutritional value by the time it gets here. And while I'm on my rant, our government needs to stop introducing Bills that would almost make it impossible to freely buy nutritional supplements, herbs and the like.Seriously, who thinks of solutions like this?!?

Oh come on! I have a better idea. Let's add extra acrylamide to the food. Eats lots and die. The goal is to keep people healthy so why not add extra toxins so they will just stay away from it. Oh wait. That would mean people would actually have to be smart. And we all know that the average person is extremely stupid. Enough nanny-state crap. This is why socialized medicine is failing. People don't have enough incentive to take care of themselves. If you don't take care of yourself then your insurance should be higher. You should pay more into the system. If you can't afford to pay into that system then you should make better choices. If you fail to make those choices then you should die. It's evolution in action in modern society. Survival of the fittest- we need a lot more of that in our society today.

Studies have shown that acrylamide causes cancer in lab mice and rats. But its effect on human health is not clear; several studies have failed to prove that acrylamide is carcinogenic in humans. okay.. so, if they are not completely sure this is harming humans are they completely sure the Acrylamide is safe? Why try to fix something that isn't broken? We need to fix and regulate the root cause, not band aid the problem. The root of this, is the manufacturer's desire to make profits at all cost, providing the public with low quality, no nutrient, highly processed foods. If we regulated the root and only allowed high quality ingedients, then there would be no need to add an unknown, and potentially harmful ingredient to what isn't even considered real food (junk). It just all seems a little ridiculas. Who will be distributing this Acylamide to the manufacturer's anyway? I bet they are also making a hefty profit, and sharing it with the so called decision makers...There's a reason why it's called JUNK food... it's junk. Why do we fool ourselves into trying to make this stuff "better". We're only putting more garbage into the junk.

Obesity, blindness, diabetis. If they were serious about taking care of us, they'd start to make these foods more expensive via tax forcing people to go to the supermarkets and buy ingredients to create wholesome foods.
