Liberal Leader Michael Ignatieff kicked off his party's convention in Vancouver Thursday by simultaneously thanking and slamming his Tory foes.

After all, it was Prime Minister Stephen Harper's risky partisan brinkmanship last fall which marked a turnaround for the Liberals after almost three years in the political wilderness.

"We have a unified party, we have a party out of debt and we have a party basically ready to fight an election," Ignatieff said at a press conference on Thursday.

"And, again, who would have thunk it? Who would've thought that this would be the result. And some of the credit, ironically enough, has to go to my chief adversary, Mr. Stephen Harper."

Last fall, Harper attempted to end public subsidies for political parties, which ignited a fierce response from the opposition and nearly resulted in the Tory's overthrow at the hands of a Liberal - NDP coalition, backed by the Bloc Quebecois.

Not long after the historic showdown, Stephane Dion quit as leader and Ignatieff took the party's helm -- a move which bypassed a potentially divisive leadership race and required rivals Bob Rae and Dominic LeBlanc to douse their leadership aspirations and step aside.

Since then, polls have tracked a startling reversal for the Liberals. In Quebec, a recent poll suggested that the Grits are now in front of the Bloc Quebecois for the first time in half a decade.

Paul Zed, Ignatieff's chief of staff, said the party is expecting around 2,000 delegates this weekend, which is more than expected.

"The big surprise, so far, is the number of delegates that have paid a lot of money to come and exchange ideas and be part of the renewal that is occurring across the country for the Liberal party," he told CTV's Power Play from Vancouver on Thursday.

Zed also denied Tory claims that the Liberals, if elected, will raise taxes in order to payoff Ottawa's massive stimulus deficit.

"One thing that Michael Ignatieff is going to do, is he's going to cut the deficit and he's going to make sure that Canadians get an opportunity to get jobs right across this country," he said.

"There are no new taxes coming in the middle of a recession, there are no new taxes coming in a recovery."

However, Zed conceded that the Grits will look at ways to "tighten" the government's belt by reviewing some federal programs.

Earlier in the day, CTV's Graham Richardson reported that the Liberals are hoping to further showcase Ignatieff's leadership talents, as well as their readiness for the next election.

According to the Liberal party website, the convention will host series of Thursday afternoon workshops that will tackle riding standards, political engagement and fundraising, among other topics.

The convention continues Friday and will wrap up on Saturday -- the same day that Ignatieff will officially be crowned leader.

Delegates will also vote on 30 resolutions that have been brought forward by riding presidents, including having a Liberal government invest heavily in child care, as well as social housing.

A pre-convention report commissioned by the party, suggested that members see Ignatieff as an agent of change with a "serious interest in party renewal at all levels."

However, the same report said that many grassroots Liberal supporters feel the party currently ignores them unless it is looking for money.

People who denigrate him for being out of the country so long, are frankly silly asses. Iggy has world experience, and came back to his country Canada to lead us out of the yoke of the moron we have as current PM. He has ancestral roots in this country, and we can't all say the same.

Also Mulroney has a better record on the environment than any other prime minister in the history of Canada. A much better legacy than the Kyoto signing photo-op Liberal. Don't beleive me? Just ask David Suzuki.
Mulroney also gave us free trade which has been good for Canada.

To Peter Rapsey,

I like the idea that the Liberals try to sell..we always get out of the hole and have extra money in our coffers....
You see Peter..that is the problem. It is not the Liberals money to put in their coffers! It is ours, yours and mine. It is our hard earned money. They raise the tax, or create new ones...collect our money, and all of a sudden they call themselves Heros, meanwhile I money is spilling out of their pockets and disappearing into unexplained scandels...millions at a time...

This latest money that the PCs did pledge...was forced by the Coup attempt of the Liberals, Bloc, and NDP...just weeks after Canadians had voted a new Goverment. The Cons are smart enough to know that they will not getdollar for dollar back on that bailout money...but if they were overthrown...the Coup would have wasted a heck of a lot more of OUR money...and we would be getting ready to vote the Conservatives back in...right about now...
I'm a moderate...and could change parties..but not with American Iggy at the Helm.

Jack has some good ideas with UI and Moms lately...that's productive Opposition Goverment...not just bashing the Goverment in Power.

All the negative comments about the Liberals in this section are from the other party members feeling the pressure and refusing to accept the fact that Harper is the one helping to rebuild the Liberal party. The "I can do no wrong" Harper has one goal in mind and that is to have the Reform party stay in power. Oops! Did I say the Reform party. I mean the newly created, merged and borrowed the "Conservative" name party. The polls numbers, the donations pouring in and the constant negative attacks of Harper is a sign of a minority leader fighting for survival. Making deals with the Bloc and NDP is definitely a desparate move.

I beg to differ with the Liberal leader Ignatiuf as to who is responsible and for what.

The real reason why the Liberals have been in the "dessert" for three years as Ignatiuf so correctly points out by his own volition is much to the credit and solely in part thanks to the corrupt Liberal 'SPONSORSHIP SCANDAL". How quickly Mr. Ignatiuf forgets. All this to do about nothing and breast thumping coming from a "drop shipped" politician from Boston U.S.A. who hardly spent a day of his life here in Canada over the last 30 years.

The only thing that is back and even bigger is......Liberal arrogance.

DCR,

The fact that Ignatieff was elected to a "safe" Liberal riding is meaningless. Stephen Harper was elected to one of the safest Tory ridings in the country. No party other than Conservative, Reform, etc has ever won it since it was created in 1987. So you're being hypocritical there.

And sure his leadership went uncontested, but it wasn't him that demanded it. The other contestants realized that the leadership race would have been divisive and split the party even further. Now that they are more united than the Conservatives, I'd say it was a good choice.

And I'd love to see these "attack ads" that you speak of. I think it'll be quite a bit harder for the Tories to create attacks ads on Ignatieff than on Dion. And guess what, the Liberals will actually have the finances this time around to fight fire with fire. So, Iggy will eventually be going to his new home, 24 Sussex Dr.

That's exactly what set Innatieff "on fire", the fact that the Conservatives wanted to take away public funding for political parties. This Harper led New Conservative Party hit its maximum ceiling during the last election. The Liberals were reeling under Dion and his pitiful “Green Shift” policy. Even under those conditions the electorate would not give the Reform/Alliance dominated Conservative Party a majority. They will never have that easy an opportunity again.

As long as the Reform/Alliance Harper and his inner circle continues to lead and to dictate to the rest of the party then they will continue to lose popularity. Already the promised “hybrid” of Reform/PC is beginning to look like a Frankenstein with its sutures beginning to unravel.

In Ignatieff we are looking at the next Prime Minister of Canada.

The coverage on the liberal convention could well have been a request for low key to distance them from their provincial counterparts. If you aren't already aware, the provincial liberals aren't too popular among people in BC these days.
As far as having the Conservatives in power during the Olympics, one might look ahead and say bring it on... we could well be in the throes of second wave pandemic by then. Along with the economy, job losses, cruise ships already cancelling Vancouver as a port, the homeless situation here, that water main break at the brand new $900 mil jewel of a convention centre, I believe that the $6 billion 2010 Olympics will look exceedingly good on Harper.

How is it that all of the conservative lovers, bash all other parties and yet never really consider that this current, self rightious current PM is a diaster for Canada. His new mandatory minimum Bill c-15 with a focus on the "drug war", which by the way would see a person with 1 marijuana plant imprisoned for 6 months,(real anti-gang stratigy)has been tried by Americans for over 30 years and has been a complete and dismal failure. That might not bother any of you who feel it gets tough on crime, but as taxpayers,it might interest you to know this American failure, cost them 100's of billions of dollars for absolutely nothing. Now if the PM doesn't know this I am embarrassed for him and scared to death for this country. As Americans move to repeal these insane policies we race toward jailing the wrong people.Where is all of this money supposed to come from? and for what. What purpose could including 1 plant in anti-gang legislation be ment for? Have any of us heard of a cartel growing 1 plant? A real thinker this guy, great economist, god help us, and in case your wondering,, No, I don't use marijuana, but I am sensible enough to realize a failed policy is a failed policy. We don't usually have the good fortune, when passing stupid, costly, ineffective bills of looking at a 30 year old failure before we move on them. This should add a few 100 million to the already broken finances of Canada while at the same time target all the wrong people. Funny,,,, there are no mandatory minimums for child molestors. Go figure.

"they should give Liberal other chance to reshape our beautiful Country"

I smell Liberal entitlement mentality here. Actually, the Conservatives are trying to reshape the country that was damaged by thirteen years of Liberal government - a reshaping that began within months of his election, with a 2% reduction in GST, and the accountability act to name a few - more money to Canadians and less money secretly given to Liberal friendly ad firms. People think Harper is mean spirited for trying to pull in the reigns on some of the willy-nilly spending of past Liberal governments. The fact is that the Harper government had quite the mess to clean up when they came to power. Give them a few more years in office to really govern, and Canada will be a beautiful place.

It just so happens that I once voted for the Liberal Party. However, I woke up to the facts. The Liberals allow themselves to waiver on ANYTHING if it suits their purpose. They are a "party of convenience". They tax us to death, then proceed to steal that same money for their own benefit. They balanced the budget and gained a surplus...not by proper management..but by robbing Peter to pay Paul(taking billions for the EI fund)...on the back of Canadian taxpayers! Again, for their on gain..not for the good of the country. If they hadn't stole that money, maybe Harper would be in a better position to help more people with EI.

As for the deficit. There wouldn't be one if the NDP, Liberal, Bloc coalition hadn't forced the spending in the first place then arrogantly put the Conservatives "on probation" to ensure that the spending takes place. Had they let the Conservatives move on the ecomomy as required, as they wanted to, in a slow and measured way, there wouldn't be a problem. Since ctv.ca is such a obvious perennial training ground for future Conservative politicians (i.e. Pamela Wallin, Mike Duffy, Geoff Scott, etc.) why not just put the Conservative Party colors on your website ?

Yet he walks and talks like he is King Iggy, Canadians are to low to even ask him about his Kingship. Where did they find this American/English cake eater...silver spoon is still showing....
If the common working Canadain thinks Iggy gives a hoot for them... Tell me one "Job" that Iggy ever had? He knows nothing of adverage Canadian life, and even less of middle or lower middle class... Liberals are out to lunch with this leader pick..it will fall apart soon...

Thanks "Rick in NB"; nice to know you can Google a quote as obscure as one by Abraham Lincoln. He was a US president, you know...

Point being, the bagmen that run the Liberal party have hijacked one of the few remaining bastillions of democracy in politics - the convention - and turned it into a farce.

Democracy hijacked by the elite and entitled, just like the quote was hijacked from Abe Lincoln. Or do they not have irony and sarcasm in NB?

A couple points for the ignorant.

Conventions are paid for by the political party, NOT taxpayers.

When the Cons dump Harper and replace him with Prentice, the Cons will get all the media attention, otherwise what is there to report on? Delegates in committees?

To "Tony C in Toronto"

The reason there was a surplus in the federal budget when the Liberals were in power is because they illegally taxed the EI Premiums to the tune of 60 billion dollars. Hmmmm. That's about the same amount as the surplus.

And the reason there is a deficit is because the Liberals demanded that Mr. Harper spend lots of money just like the Americans, or they were going to form a coalition to make it happen.

Watch the news a little more often and you might actually know what's going on.

Endorsing the new leader shows how cold the Liberals have become, sure they care at election time. I won't be fooled by clapping for themselves at this theatrical event where nobody really beleives each other, where they repeat the same old insults they used in the past.
The Party had too many left over Conservatives, Republicans and NDPers who are trying to reinvent themselves, using the Liberal marketing.

The deficit is not anyones fault in the current PM's Office. in fact if you simply look at your provincial liberal leader. your provinces deficit is almost as large as the federal deficit, so on a linear type calculation, a liberal PM would have doubled our current deficit in one year, probably like 200 billion in deficit spending. I say Cut all programs that help people who could help themselves.. let those who have 9 kids and are on welfare because they cant keep there legs closed suffer for there actions. Tired of spending money on free needles for drug addicts, and to be honest, I would rather have a system in place that doesnt allow every person with the sniffles to go to the hospital... and please send all those immigrants without jobs back home, theyre here for a year, and get to claim unempoyement, get medical.. etc, the rest of us had to pay taxes since we started working, we earned it. enough is enough. Go Conservative, and create a country of competers, a country of people who will always strive to do better because there will be nothing to fall back on. 45% tax is enough. Dont you liberals get that.. This is your fault. Now let us correct it

It is amazing to see how Liberals will continue to vote Liberal no matter what it is the party does. These conventions only put fourth the same class of people who would do any thing or say anything to win a vote and as usual, much of the Canadian public follows blindly. If we seriously sat down and took the time to understand what it is the Liberals stand for, they would get a lot fewer votes come the net election. I for one will question their policies closely and not just vote because I heard Stephen Harper was a bad man.

The bellyaching from the sore loser Conservatives on this site is outright pathetic. It's time for you all to realize that Canada is a centre-left country. Always has been, always will be. Conservative governments are nothing but stewards to the PM chair. You're all just upset because your ultra right wing Reform in Conservative Blue Sweatervest Clothing leader will NEVER, EVER get a majority government in this moderate country. Stop your whining. The Liberals have governed 80% of the last 100 years for a reason.

Michael Ignatieff will be the best PM this country has ever seen. Finally a leader who is willing to think outside the box, think big, and show that Canadians do NOT have to feel that we are nothing but America's weak neighbor. We can and are better than that. Or at least, we can be once the ultra right wing Reformers stop their bellyaching and accept their rightful place in the opposition seats.

Hallalulah, a king is crowned!!!!!. Why are the Liberals even bothering to spend money on this convention. It is a done deal, no election, no other choice. If it comes to pass that "the king" becomes PM, I guess we will be ruled by an iron fist, and no-one will have any input. And some of you call PM Harper a dictator!!!!. He pales in comparison. I would just like to know what the other original candidates for leadership were offered to drop out of the race. Don't suppose we'll find that out any time soon.

It amuses me so many Con-hacks are commenting on a Liberal convention...

You Cons might want to spend your time reminding your party leader that by getting into bed with the Bloc is apparently a "betrayal of the voters of this country" as he once so adamantly stated last Christmas...

Oh wait! It's now OK, isn't it? Or is it? I'm so confused. The Cons flip flop on so many of their own principles in their desperate need to white knuckle on to power, I can't keep up anymore....

At least Mulroney & the PCs had more dignity and self respect than this version of Conservative party has...

As for the convention, I am hopeful that the Libs put together a platform that is relevant to Canadians. Some real substance as opposed to attack ads and pontifications about principles that the candidates really don't believe anyway ( you know the typical Con political strategy)...

This is not a Leadership Convention. It is a Leadership Coronation where we already know the 'winner' and the 30 policy proposals have already been filtered. The Liberal Party wants to showcase their 'new' leader under the gize of a democratic convention. Why does the media want to cover it at all? Very sad situation for a once proud party.

I don't think I'm going to watch the Liberal Coronation. We already know who the next king is going to be. And as for their platform, we already know what they are going to promise but not deliver. Do you think we're going to get daycare from them? Do you think we're going to get public housing from them? We've elected them before on those promises and they never delivered more than a token of what they promised. What is there to watch? It's a charade.

I am watching parts of it on TV. The way I see it is, this is a good way to learn on what they would do if they did form the next govt. I imagine if the other parties held their conventions , they would also be televised on CPAC or some other station.

Never judge a book by its cover!

Now when I think of it, there should be a book and film convention. That way all politicians, and famous people can present their material to the public.

All this whoopla and for what?

Honestly - why is every Liberal leadership convention given as much coverage as the Olympics and trumped up like a visit from the Queen?

None of the other parties gets this much media attention when they run their respective leadership races. Is this our predominatly left wing media showing it's colours again or do some people out there genuinely believe that because we're dealing with the "natural governing party" that Liberal leadership races are somehow "different" and that everybody better sit up and take notice?

I certainly don't recall the past few NDP, Conservative or Bloc Leadership Conventions having this kind of red carpet rolled out in terms of coverage. However, I do recall - and not so long ago either - that we were all treated to the same kind of media extravaganza when Mr.Dion took the reigns of the Liberal Party.

I find the lack of objectivity in their reporting and the explicit bias shown by CTV and others - dissapointing.

To all our friends who complain about Liberals possibly raising taxes: Who do you think will have to pay for the federal budget deficit? Taxpayers, of course. Taxes will be raised and services will be cut in order to pay for the deficit. The Conservatives were left with a fairly large budgetary surplus. Now, the surplus is gone and we're facing a deficit. Who do you think will pay for that? Some poeple don't seem to understand that there's a link between the two.

No coincidence there's a run on guns in the US. All I can say to my Canadian comrades is... hold onto yours!

DCR in Toronto...I couldn't have said it better. National Daycare (more government employees) will further erode the family and parental responsibility. More social housing doesn't improve the human condition, but makes those in need of housing more reliant on government where they see growing their voting base. Ignatieff is an international statist and will strike down individualism to build up collectivism. If the Liberals get a minority government, their pals the NDP/Bloc will help them bring in every socialist program they can to spread the wealth from the middleclass. Canadians can't afford to pay more taxes.

By the way people should google Iggy's vision for Canada.. Amazing - I like him and I can see how this will happen. I think he is going to be our best prime minister ever... PET is still my # 1.

People - please remember that no matter which party or who Prime Minister is... Every Canada Goverment Make a Difference in Canada history!

Every government has both pro and con effects but overall it's good.

It's irony that harper's fans claimed that they are PROUDLY Canadian then they should give Liberal other chance to reshape our beautiful Country..... Liberal has been in government for many years far than any parties in history....

Fact is - Canada is awesome eh? then they must did good job.

Give them a other chance...

They are not like NDP so please don't refer them as cash-give-away party because they doesn't do that...

I've went through system - Liberal government is only one that got me on my foot therefore I am no longer on taxpayer payroll... I am on my own now...

This is Hockey City and no one will be giving any heed to politics - and we are in the midst of a Provincial Election as well (and to top it off the popularity of the Provincial Liberals is falling). Any reporter with a press pass covering the Convention will be at the hockey games. So much for connecting with British Columbians- the reason given for selecting Vancouver as the city in which to hold the Federal Liberals' 2009 Convention.

Oh, wait. There's NONE OF THAT. This is not a convention, it's a CORONATION! We know who won, the policy resolutions will be only those the elite want passed, stage managed to the last detail. This the biggest joke in the history of Canadian Democracy. Iggy parachutes into a "safe" Liberal riding so he can win. Then he loses in a fair race, so they now forgo the election process and leave tens of thousands of Liberal members without a voice in choosing a leader. They call this democracy? I guess it is..Liberal style. When the truth about this mans past comes out, Canadians will see him for the fraud he is. I looked on youtube and seen Iggy speaking in the USA. In that speech he referred to himself and his countrymen "we (amercicans)" several times. Now all of a sudden he wants to be the Prime Minister of Canada. What a joke. He already thinks he's the PM. Like it's his devine right...and us good litle Canadians should just listen. Professor knows best attitude. I'm looking forward to the Conservative attack ads. The thing is..the Conservatives don't have to do anything but show us Iggys past. It's all over the place on the net, in his books, and now...on our TV screens. Iggy...please do us all a favour and go home ..wherever that is..US, England?
