The son of a woman whose death last month was linked to the nationwide listeriosis outbreak is calling for the firing of Agriculture Minister Gerry Ritz.

Dennis Schroh's mother, Elizabeth Schroh, died on Aug. 24 at the age of 82. She was a resident of a nursing home located in the riding Ritz represents as a member of Parliament.

Schroh told The Canadian Press he was upset when he found out that Ritz had joked about the deadly outbreak during a conference call with scientists and political officials just six days after his mother's death.

In that conference call, Ritz said he hoped the Prince Edward Island victim of a deadly listeriosis outbreak was Liberal agriculture critic Wayne Easter.

Ritz also said: "This is like a death by a thousand cuts. Or should I say cold cuts."

At the time, 12 people had died from the outbreak, including Elizabeth Schroh. At least 17 deaths have been linked to the Listeria outbreak.

"It's something a person should not be saying at this time at all. It's not a joke," Schroh said from his home in Swift Current, Sask., on Thursday. "I mean I wouldn't say that about anybody."

It has not yet been determined whether listeriosis was an underlying or contributing factor in Elizabeth Schroh's death, as she was also suffering from a blood disorder.

Nevertheless, her son says he's convinced it was what killed her and put her through an agonizing death.

"I never want anybody to see somebody die like that again in my life," Dennis Schroh said. "The way she was wailing and flinging her arms and everything else. It was pain. Nobody should go through this again. Simple as that.

"I wouldn't wish it on anybody."

He said it's now up to the leader of the Conservatives to fix what has happened, since Schroh doesn't believe the apology Ritz issued was sincere.

"If Harper is the right kind of person to run this country, he's got to do the right thing and get rid of this minister. Simple as that," Schroh said. "There's no doubt about it in my mind. It is going to affect the outcome of the election.

Union alleges food safety cuts

The fallout from Ritz's comments came on the same day a public-sector union alleged that a re-elected federal Conservative government would pull out of meat inspection programs in Manitoba, Saskatchewan and British Columbia.

According to the Public Service Alliance of Canada, a secret report from the Treasury Board of Canada released this past May proposed that they could save $3 million by cutting federal meat inspection programs.

Patty Ducharme is the union's national executive vice-president. She told The Canadian Press that if a re-elected Tory government makes the proposed cuts, consumers would be the ones who pay.

"Meat produced in provincially registered facilities would not be inspected," Ducharme said. "Under this type of a scenario, consumers would have to count on the fact that producers would produce their products in a fashion that ensures their safety."

Harper sticks by Ritz

Conservative Leader Stephen Harper stood by his embattled agriculture minister Thursday despite the growing chorus for his resignation over controversial remarks he made about the deadly Listeria crisis.

On Thursday, Harper said Ritz recognizes the comments were "completely insensitive and unacceptable."

He said Ritz was under a lot of stress at the time and the comments aren't indicative of his performance as a minister.

"I think this story is obviously very embarrassing for him, very unfortunate. But it shouldn't detract from the good work that he has done to get on top and to understand this matter, to improve the system and to communicate publicly with Canadians and to make sure government officials are all doing their jobs," Harper said.

"It's obviously embarrassing but he's been doing a good job on this file and I applaud him for apologizing completely and forthright."

News broke Wednesday that Ritz had made the comments during the call with scientists, bureaucrats and political staff.

Later that night he made a public apology and called Easter to explain what he had said, and offer him a personal apology.

On Thursday, Easter said the remarks were callous and insensitive, but he didn't demand the minister's resignation over the comments about himself.

Instead, Easter said he wants Ritz to resign over what he said is his general poor performance in the job.

Easter called for Ritz's resignation several weeks ago over his handling of the Listeria outbreak, which was linked to a Maple Leaf Foods meat processing plant north of Toronto.

"We still stand by that resignation call but it's not related to this comment about myself. So we want to go to the performance of the minister and not politicize this particular issue because this call for his resignation was made prior to the election call," Easter told CTV's Canada AM.

Liberal Leader Stephane Dion said Harper had no choice but to take "responsibility" and fire Ritz.

New Democrat Leader Jack Layton has also demanded Ritz's resignation.

A spokesperson for the Prime Minister's Office said Ritz expressed his regret to Stephen Harper on Wednesday, but there was no suggestion of his resignation.

"A resignation was not offered, nor was one asked for," PMO spokesperson Kory Teneycke said.

Although I can understand (not condone) somebody using dark humour while being overworked during this time, the Minister doesn't have this freedom. He is the boss, the face of this department and is obviously not the man for the job.
He needs to go.

You a politician, you got to live your life like someone is always watching and listening! Your running for public office, you are watched and you have to be on your best behavior or don't run for office! The whole incident has become rather thrashwy for both parties now that Easter has had a chance to publicly open his mouth.

He has confirmed to all that he is no better then the next when give a chance to shut off his mouth.

This opposition critic has publicly stated that the comment was in bad taste and inappropriate to which no one in their right mind will deny. Further to his comment, he stated he accepted the apology from the minister in question.

What proves to everybody that this Liberal critic minister is no better then the rest is that although he stated that no humour should be attached to such comments, he went further to say that if those comments had been directed to him in private by the person who said them of him, he would have accepted the humour as it was intended!

Either these comments were in bad taste and inappropriate or they weren't! Which is it as this liberal opposition critc cannot have it both ways. Why should it be "inappropriate when said "publicly" but "approriate" according to his follow up comments....when said in private.

What hypocrites these politicians really are (the party makes no difference) and obviously are always ready to sacrifice one of their own even as they fail miserably in attempting to take advantage of a gift handed to them.

Perhaps Stephen Harper is absolutely bang on the money when he advises his ministers to keep their mouths shut.

Stephane Dion ought to do the same of his own party for his own critic opposition minister has proven this to be the case. Easter just plain blew it because he did not know when to shut up.

The liberals must be ecstatic! This is another day that they do not have to try to sell their Green Shift disaster.

But frankly, how is this important? Does the fact that a conservative engaged in gallows humour make me willing to pay more tax? Should it convince me that the liberals are better on the enviroment? Does it mean that liberals have better plan for child care? Does it show that the liberal plan for health care is superior? NO!! None of these issues are answered by this witch hunt.

I find that the fact the liberals are making this an issue at all more digusting thatn the comments themselves. The more that issues like this dominate the political arena in this country, the less interseted I voting I become. I suspect this true of many others in this country. Politics should be a contest of ideas, not name calling. Unless the Dion and the liberals are ready to pormise that they will fire any cabinet minister who says something stupid (something they have not done in the past, ie Hedy Fry) they should shut up and move on and talk about their plans for the country.

Many families and friends of the families of those who died as a result of the listeriosis outbreak suffered horribley; we must be sensitive to that. I applaud the CEO of Maple Leaf meats, Michael McCain, he handled himself so well during the outbreak, he was very sensitive and compassionate. The Conservative Minister of Agriculture could learn from him. He should resign his position now.

Our sympathies to Dennis Schroh and all the other families whose relatives suffered a horrible disease.

No, we have all said stupid/tastless things.

If this is the best piece of Ammo that the Left-Wing Parties can Launch at the Tories, perhaps they should just Admit that Now is a good time for a Tory Majority.

The story about Ritz is a story familiar to the people of Walkerton who suffered misery because of a neo-corporate decision by Mike Harris to cut government inspection processes. Harper is following suit, but in this scenario, self-inspection powers are being given to entities that cannot sign an affidavit in court because "they have no conscience to bind them." Which is precisely the unprincipled behaviour Harper has exhibited since he sold his soul for power.

Ok first off - NO, I am not a Liberal or regular supporter of any particular party. In fact I have voted both Conservative and Liberal over the years. But I have to say something about this...

It is absolutely AMAZING to me how the obvious conservatives on here are minimizing this and saying let it go. The ultimate in hypocritical!!

Several have mentioned how if/when the liberals made comments or whatever, they didn't necessarily fire the person and although I don't know the specific people/charges they are referring to, I would be willing to bet it all on the fact that conservatives were calling for heads and resignations at the time. But now that the tables are turned, he apologized - it's Ok. Unreal.

C'mon people - EVERY party makes mistakes but it is in the way they are handled that tells the most!!!

Not sure who to vote for but more and more of this type of attitude and arrogance from the conservative party and their supporters - looking more like it will be a "ABC' vote!!!

My deepest sympathie to the Schroh family.

Dennis you have experienced the tragic death of your mother and that must have been very emotionally painful for you. And still is I am sure.

While you were experiencing the death of your mother other families were also grieving for their loved one. A lot of people were turning towards the government with critics, question..you name it. The comments made Mr. Ritz was probably meant to ease the tension on this whole ordeal. And yes it was and is death by the cold cuts!!!...what else should we call it? Death by Maple Leaf!! Would that eased the pain you have in your heart...I don't think so.

I am sure by his comments Mr. Ritz tried to ease the tension just leave at that. They say what goes around comes around..so if you create grief you'll only collect grief. Wouldn't you feel better spending time, honoring your mother's life and the good memories you have of her instead of loosing your time on Mr. Ritz

Here is a list of some of the screw up’s the Conservatives have made during their short time in office.
Agriculture minister Gerry Ritz makes jokes about the listeriosis outbreak that has been linked to the deaths of 17 Canadians, wishing a recent death was Liberal MP Wayne Easter.
They attempted to bribe an MP to vote their way (Chuck Cadman).
They fired a nuclear watchdog for doing her job when she closed the Chalk River plant.
They ignored Elections Canada rules.
The canceled the access to information database (not very transparent).
They slip up and leak information which had effects on the Democratic nomination (the so called empty threats on the free trade agreement).
A Con MP (Maxime Bernier) leaves classified information at his girlfriend’s house who has ties to the underworld.
They cut arts funding and try to control what art will be created.
They cut back on federal inspections of meat plants and as a result listeriosis from Maple Leaf meat is released to the public.
They have done nothing for the environment.
They are sending Canada into a massive debt.
They are an embarrassment on the world stage.
No wonder Harper muzzles his MP’s from granting interviews!

Seems the rose coloured glasses block the brain from seeing issues from all elected , from every party.
Every thing mentioned has happened before in previous goverments, but then it was not a big issue, just a mistake. It goes all ways.
Grow up, and move on to the real issues that need debate.

Most people say a few stupid things at some point in their lives.I doubt we should fire them all.
In this case,it looks like a political game more than anything else.People who support opposition parties thik he should go,people who lean towards the government do not.Political correctness seems to be at play because there doesn;'t seem to be anybody suggesting this outbreak was his fault in any way.
As to how long it took to get it tracked down, one only needs to look south for a comparison. It's taken months for the FDA to track down a salmonella outbreak, and they're still not sure if they found the source.
Of course condolances are due the families of victims of this bacteria. But we all know that nothing will bring them back. So,unless there is a very blatant case of negligence,or a criminal act here, firing someone would be more about politics or revenge than any real effort towards justice.

So all joking aside, another Canadian died today in Manitoba from this outbreak and this time it was a child. The way the Conservatives have handled this Public Health crisis has been deploreable and a disaster. From the Minister of Agriculture making jokes when peple were dying, to the Minister of Health arranging to be out of the country at a political convention in the USA while people were dying, to Harper himself who was silent for weeks about this crisis, only suggesting an enquiry when pressure was on from the election campaign, this has been mishandled from the word go ! Who in the Harper Conservative government stepped up to take some responsibiblity for this tragedy?
Not one of them ! We need a real change.

We go through this life once. Some of us make mistakes that physically hurt others, like beating, killing etc. These actions are hard to forgive even when an apology is put forth, but forgiveness is still possible.
When some one verbally hurts some one and apologizes for what they have said, it makes for a better world when the apology is accepted and we move on. The person who can't accept the apology, is only hurting themselves from that point on.
But then you have the news media that will not let the matter end peacefully because the more they stir the pot the more the hate and anger grows. The media likes this and it shows on the faces of the reporters.
It would be nice to have an election without the media sensationalizing every tid bit that happens. Give Canada an election that is clear of mud slinging.

Gerry Ritz should resign, but not for trying to lighten up a very tense situation with gallows humour.

He should resign because:

1. He twice mislead the public on the state of the Listeria problem.

3. fooling around with political optics while Listeria raged.

I've been watching CTV today and I am getting frustrated with hearing the same story about the Liberals and NDP, shocked and indignant, demanding the immediate dismissal/forced resignation of Gerry Ritz, Agriculture Minister for the Conservatives, based on what is admittedly an insensitive joke in bad taste. Mr. Ritz apologized to Mr. Easter (Liberal Critic) who accepted his apology. Mr. Ritz publicly apologized to the families of the people who suffered from the listeriosis outbreak.

This incident occured several weeks ago and was strategically released to the media at this time. Doesn't anyone else see that the Liberals/NDP aren't really ALL THAT outraged!?! This is just a tool they are using to sway voters during the election. To use the suffering of others like this for political gain makes me ill. Shame on you!

A bureaucrat leaks remarks made in private by the minister at a conference call and now all hell breaks loose.

Were the remarks in bad taste? Sure. But I understand black humour under duress which is surely what Mr Ritz was feeling. Which illuminates the seriousness with which he takes his job.

I find it typical of this current crop of Liberals to rather than highlight what they would do in place of the current policies on food inspection, resort to catcalls and accusations, and shrill calls for a public inquiry to yet waste more of our money.

They MUST resort to such tactics to deflect attention from the fact that they have no policy platform in this election other than to tax Canadians into oblivion.

Maple Leaf Foods, in conjunction with the government acted exactly as they should have in this instance. Listeria is everywhere in the environment and the conditions that resulted in the crisis just past could have happened at any time in the last 20 years.

It's another thing to follow through on promises... which is why the Prime Minister who understands the flow of government is making measured incremental policy adjustments and announcements not crazy wholesale sweeping mega taxation statements like Dion and Layton are.

I like the way Canada is going now and am not prepared to sacrifice it for the likes of Jack Layton's far out policies nor Stephane Dion's socialistic policies.

Socialists promise free lunches but real life teaches people over time that there are NO FREE LUNCHES. NO EXCEMPTIONS.

It's nice to dream but somebody has to pay and when it comes to elections that means YOU PAY.

They promise, you pay...

Where's the free lunch for you?

I just want to point out to some of you people that the Liberals had asked for this minister to resign BEFORE the comments due to how he handled the outbreak. The Liberal he attacked has accepted the apology but is still asking for his resignation due to how he handled the outbreak - not because of the comment. Nonetheless this was a disgusting comment and I do agree the Harper should fire this rat bastard. Wishing death upon anyone is horrible.

There are many Liberal/NDP/and Green supporters out there who will be utterly shocked when Harper and His Government win a Majority in this election. As you can see by all the stories, the Left wingers are the biggest whiners and moaners out there. You all think that you have a chance of forming an opposition, but really you don't. There are no other Rumming Mates that can even stand close to what Canada needs.

On another note, if people didn't consume so much "processed" foods, maybe an outbreak of Listeriosis wouldn't have happened. When you put unatural products in food, you are bound to have a problem. After years of consumption and NO other outbreaks, I would say that the Inspectors are doing a pretty good job. This is a naturally occuring bacteria people!! In almost ALL cases it is NOT fatal. It's like Salmonella - sometimes you get something bad. There is no blame here, just unfortunate.

It's disturbing that so many Conservative bloggers are so quick to excuse the rude and contemptuous comments from their leaders. Wishing someone dead isn't a joke. Civilized people (politicians from other parties) don't do this (except for the BQ occasionally). For an elected member of our gov't to wish the death of a fellow human being while cracking a tasteless joke about a victim of the outbreak is just about as low as anyone can get. What an embarrassing display for Canada. More embarrassing is Mr. Harper's response.

And the comments here passing it off as no big deal are further shameful. What if it was a member of YOUR family?

It does not matter which party we may support. This is cause for concern.People died and are mourning for their lost ones.
Yes ,politicians have made mistakes and some will continue to say things that should not be said.
It is interesting how some people are relating incidents from previous decades to what what said by Ritz to justify his comments.
When there is wrong some people will try to justify the wrongs by pointing the finger at another issue as to say he/she did this, did that therefore it is okay.
Well it is not!
The people who are supporting Ritz must not have been affected by death or sickness by a loved one.
And yes, he should be fired. It is one thing for an everday person (not that it is okay) to make a comment but to have someone on the world political stage is another.

Am I surprised at Harper running to the defense of this man? Not at all. Harper has a party full of many
people who make tasteless and/or inapproprate comments! This is HIS party.

Take for example Cheryl Gallant comparing a beheading of an American to abortion. Or how about Rob Anders' views on Nelson Mandela - a "communist" and "terrorist". Do I even need to mention the comments that have been made by Stockwell, Myron Thompson, and Art Hanger among others?

Seriously people, I don't like the way these people think. It's humiliating for Canada to have our leaders and politicians speaking in such a way. The stuff some of them have said is truly disturbing. This is just one more on a long list. Doubt it? Run a search for "In their own words".

PM Harper should have more common sense than to keep people around with this kind of mentality.

I am sick of ALL politicians whatever their political stripes. This shows that they are never concerned about Canadians or doing the right thing for the country, but whatever will help their political careers. The fact that Ritz was more concerned about the political implications of the outbreak than the suffering of the affected families and the bad decisions by his government that led to the problem in the first place, is plain SICK (but not surprising).
Politicians' apologies mean NOTHING to me. They only apologize when they are caught and all they do is read a well-scripted apology written by someone else. SHAME.

The complaint is that the remarks were insensitive. Sure they were, but the remarks were made to a very small group that had not been affected by the disease.

The people who are insensitive are the ones who leaked the information and those such as Layton and Dion who talk about it at every chance making sure that everyone who has been affected hears these same remarks.

Layton and Dion should be ashamed and they should resign for their insensitivity.

Although the joke tasteless people need to look a little closer to home.

How many of you tell racial or fat jokes?

How many of you make fun of the disabled or slow?

How many look at the old couple down the street and mock their ways.

Yes it was a careless thing to say at a most difficult time. We lost people in this country all because of a mistake made by an employee of a meat packing plant.

The minister has apologized. I am sure he realized his mistake as soon as it came out of his mouth. I bet the ones listening to that conversation either laughed or did all they could not to.

It is human nature to try and find the funny side of something that disturbs or upsets us.

I say, get on with the election, there are bigger and better problems a simple slip of the tongue is not a reason to fire someone.

I would rather hear of health care, improved working conditions, improved welfare system, proper education, more schools and most of all a way to regulate the oil and gas industry so we are not sticker shocked every time we go to the pumps.

You people don't get it.

18 FREAKING CANADIANS DIED YOU MORONS!!

This isn't an issue of someone getting bad gas from a piece of baloney.

18 people have died because the meat company they purchased product from no longer needed to use government inspectors.

This because the Harper Government changed the rules so Maple Leaf could just hire someone to do the job.

Much cheaper and easier to control.

And the same government that is responsible for allowing the inspection process to fail....OBVIOUSLY....is now cracking jokes about it.

And you people sit here and defend that by telling the rest of us that this is no big deal...it's just a joke, lighten up.

Are you serious!? Is this the type of governance you think Canadians deserve?

A government that will cut and slash rules for production and import of material to benefit their corporate buddies?

And in the light of 18 deaths following this decision,,...jokes??????

What the heck is the matter with you people? I don't care if they're Conservative, Liberal, NDP or the Hula Party.

This is bush league and most of the comments here defending the jokes and policy made are even scarier.

If we don't demand better, then we get what we ask for and it will be your mother eating something next year that dies.

Ministers should behave in a manner befitting their position. It is unacceptable for the leader of an institution whose purpose it is to protect Canadians from harm to joke about the deaths of Canadians.

However, firing him is too much. He should be formally reprimanded, and that should be the end of that with regards to those comments. Perhaps he should be forced to attend a sensitivity and harassment seminar. However, his electors should reconsider their position and if they feel it is too big a deal. They can exercise their power as citizens and not elect him in the upcoming election. Democracy at work.

People here seem shocked by the comments. Get over yourselves...you've probably said bad things too at one time or another. Death of a thousand cold cuts is quite the clever word play, and somewhat funny. Get over it. Hang around a police station, a hospital, or a morgue long enough and see how many horrible jokes are made in a day. People use humor to diffuse tension and stress: I'd rather someone make a few inappropriate jokes to keep his wits about him than someone who never cracks a joke but screws up all the time.

I'd rather a minister throw a bad joke than a prime minister who chokes a man, thereby committing assault as defined in the Criminal Code, and then gets the charges magically dismissed despite it being witnessed by many and caught on tape.

A little bit of 'black humour' during a crisis is both appropriate and required. It breaks the tension and allows people to focus better on what is required.

From the Liberal Canadian Dictionary:

Responsibility: slang; When applied to a Liberal Government, the act of a Minister to fall on his pension and be assigned a high-paying job at another location in the public trough. A form of reward.

When applied to other political parties it is used to discredit opponents and gain political traction for Canada's Natural Governing Party. In order to take maximum advantage, calls for 'responsibility' should be made early and often.

iskewa, ottawa

All the people brushing this off are not considering the simple fact that indirectly this completely useless man was making light of the current outbreak itself.

If a man is appointed to a position of responsibility he must ensure that everything said, especially in a meeting involving the strategy for stopping the avoidable deaths of the people who elected him in.

Yet another reason to vote the other way.

What a useless exercise this quasi-democracy is!

I have been to many funerals and been in many situations where the death of someone has been discussed inappropriately with humour. In no way did any of these comments reflect any negative feelings towards the dead, or any lack of understanding towards the seriousness of the situation.

Humour during such inappropriate times can be a way of dealing with the situation at hand. A way of reducing the stress to better handle the situation.

The comments were not appropriate. That does not mean there was malicious intent.

Different people handle stressful situations in different ways. I in no way approve of the comments made and I do think they show poor leadership given the forum that they were made in, however I don't think it should result in his being fired. I really believe that the extent of the listeriousis outbreak was a very unfortunate result of necessity of mass production of food. Contamination and problems with production of perishable food products will always occur no matter how regimented our inspection system is. The necessity to mass produce food products at a price that consumers are willing to pay intensifies the extent of the problems.

It seems to me that Conservative cabinet ministers are called to be fired at least once a week.
They are still human, and everyone makes mistakes.
It is only since the Liberals have not been a majority that they cry for resignations at any minor infraction (the exception being Bernier).
It used to be that it was a MAJOR, serious issue when someone called for the resignation of a minister.
The Liberals have completely destroyed any credibility of that call for resignation, abusing it making it a complete joke, just like they made the committee on supposed "In & out" schemes of the Conservatives.

There can be no simple explanation or apology offered that does not carry some political price . Even a harmless pun made during a conference call can be used as moral ammunition by opponents and the press.
I wonder if anyone really thought what the victims of the lesterios outbreak feel about being fodder for the election campaign ? Some things are better dealt with in a more tactful setting . I wonder which is worse , being the subject of an uncouthe pun or having your misfortune trotted out and used for the political gain . Not much doubt the victims here lose either way as politicians use them for ammunition in their mud slinging contest .I think maybe the politicians should stick to the facts of the issues and not pray on the emotions of people who are suffering hardships and losses of loved ones .

The NDP I'm not sure what they were passionate about. Mr. Layton is passionate about being the PM. Good luck.
The Green Party. Their passion is a green economy. Reality is more than just one issue so they have to show their other sides which may not be so pretty.

And this man is the Minister of Agriculture. Should we have a minister in office that doesn't have the IQ to realize that belittling the deaths of Canadians perhaps isn't so wise?

Furthermore a minister who obviously hasn't heard the report yesterday released by the medical association in Canada that clearly shows the Harper Government is responsible for the events that lead to these deaths?

The point of the matter is that it was Ritz's ministry that was responsible to ensure the safety of those individuals, yet by Aug. 30 he still obviously hadn't grasped the seriousness of the situation.

Those 30 individuals on the line were there to try and address the problem but instead all they got was their boss making jokes. Working for the govt. doesn't make you wear the same political stripes as the MINORITY govt. so they have every right to disclose to Canadians what's really going on.

This guy gets $230,000/yr to make jokes instead of ensure the safety of our Food system???

THE CONS HAVE NO SHAME…

Just when you thought that the CONROACHES couldn’t dig a hole even deeper than the last and then this. Am I surprised? Absolutely not. There are too many examples of their crass, insensitive, and contemptuous behaviour to cite. I believe that the majority of Canadians will not find the death of 17 human beings, through no fault of their own, to be funny or even mildly amusing. You can’t rationalize or justify the utterance of these hurtful comments unless you are a true blue CONBOT supporter. Sadly, these individuals see nothing wrong with the Minister’s remarks. What I find incredulous is that Canadians want this party to govern our country and represent our interests abroad. Shocking.

I cannot believe some of the comments on this site. Let's state some facts. Canada is one of the top 10 richest countries in the world, yet we still have poverty, and still have children going to school hungry. According to the United Nations we rank second to last on technology and green initiatives out of all the G8 Countries - the only country that is behind us is the US. (That's something we shoud be pround of.) We have pollution everywhere. Our once pristine source of clean drinking water is shrinking. Come on people, let's get with the program.

This government is doing nothing. To all those neocons out there that are over 50 ( and trust me-the majority of them are) things are changing. The youth voters of this country are not pleased. The Conservatives may win a minority government this time, but savour it. It won't last long.

Ritz made a joke. Opponents want to make something of nothing.

I'm tired of reading this unbridled bashing and blatant lies and character assassination coming from the left wing with their twisted innuendo, slander and attacks on our Prime Minister and his team.

What has the left ever achieved in Canadian government?

NOTHING.... So what gives these noisy gongs any credibility? NOTHING. They are suffering an intellectual and political meltdown and resort to cheap bashing because they have nothing to offer Canadians.

When these people have achieved half as much as Steven Harper has done in only two years then I will listen to them - until then I intend to support the only reasonable and safe choice for Canada in this election.

Mr. Harper is our best choice in this economic storm we are facing. Radical changes to the left with their proposed sweeping, untried taxation schemes would be catastrophic and likely sink us into recession or worse.

Ritz made a couple of tasteless comments for which he has apologized. However, that's not good enough. The serious issue is what is he doing about the listeriosis outbreak? I have not seen one iota of evidence that he has not done his job. The media needs to stop with the gotcha journalism particularly as it relates to Conservatives. Layton throws out a drug taking candidate and it hardly rates a mention. Dion boots out a racist but hardly a word. Double standard; you bet.
The problem is the media are looking for these type of things because they really have no clue about policy or any real interest in covering the policy of the various parties. A good example is where are all the billions comning from to pay for these expensive promises. Anybody in the media out there interested?

Right now all I see is the old Reganomics and the old Regan philosophy as later expoused by Kim Campbell that "an election is no time to discuss issues." Now the Liberals, NDP and others are not much better. However, I must say the Liberal's at least had the guts to develop and promulgate an environmental policy whether we agree with it or not. I think you overstate that "Socialism" is killing us. We are a long, long, long way from socialism. It's like saying Mr. Harper is a dictator within his own party. Stretching it a bit. As for the topic if we accept bad behaviour from our Ministers then that's a personal choice. I personally feel they should think before they speak.

Just a quick question - If Gerry Ritz had lost a family member due to the listeriosis outbreak, would he have made the callous joke? As agricultural minister he is a representative of every single person in this country. I sincerely think he needs to step down. He played tasteless politics with a very serious issue. And as I saw on TV, he only apologised after he was forced to - not at the first available opportunity. Shameful!

Just because other politicians have made callous, inappropriate comments in the past does not make it right now. I despise the "belittling" adds and personal attacks made by any party. But in this election, clearly the Conservatives are the biggest offenders. Yes people make mistakes, but scrutiny of speech goes with the job of politicians, as with many other professions. Surely this is not a new concept for the minister? Common courtesy and consideration should prevent most individuals from making this type of comment.

In this case,it is obvious that the Conservatives got caught with their pants down. But no one should be surprised with the callousness expressed by comments coming from that party.

This is Ritz's area of responsibility and accountability. At his level, he should not be making statements to that effect and still expect any form of respect or legitimacy from the public.

What is more concerning is if it was never brought to light, would an apology or confession have been proactively made? I would think not as he and the Conservatives would have still viewed the situation as one of "doing nothing wrong" and would have just swept it under the rug.

Certainly disrespectful and inappropriate behaviour unbecoming a cabinet minister and a MP.

I am sure the riding he represents must be very proud. As a Canadian, I can only express disgust and disappointment.

Ritz, someone who I believe is not really cabinet material, made an inappropriate remark. It came out and he immediately apologized. He will wear it as will the party. If the people in his riding decide to fire him so be it, but there is no doubt that whatever the result his days in cabinet are over. As for these continual calls by the Liberals to fire everyone who errs by being human and making a stupid remark by opening one's mouth before engaging one's brain should practise what they preach. Case in point. Garth Turner tried to pull a fast one on the media and was caught. Instead of owning up to the scam, he attempted to cover it up and imply(lied) that the media was in full knowledge. When that was debunked, he blamed his staff and attacked the credibility of a reporter. Once again this was debunked. He finally offered an apology of sorts. Why are the Liberals not firing him? After all this wasn't a spur of the moment gaffe but but a 48 hr attempt to cover up his actions by shifting blame on others. I see a bit of hypocrisy on the Liberals stance on this matter.

I don't care how this is handled but I know that I am fed up with the likes of Jack Layton standing there demaning that Harper fires the man when we know all politicians are thinking that if we keep the heat on this guy they won't look at what I may have said or did over the last 20 years or so.

What a world. Every word one says is scrutinized to the nth degree. Now if he had said something like he doesn't care about those who were affected by the listeria outbreak then that would be different.

Like when Ignatieff said he didn't care about the Lebanese/Canadians caught in the middle of a war. Now that's something one should resign over. Of course he didn't.

Anyway, Ritz made a joke about a political opponent to a small group. Perhaps inappropriate, but is it a lynching offense?

As for being fired over his handling of the affair, that's different. He should have foreseen this happening. Wayne Easter did, didn't he?

Think of all the occasions over the 13 years of the last Liberal government being in charge when a Liberal stuck his foot in his mouth big time and was not asked to resign by his own leader. Then listen to the Liberal's outrage that will flood the airwaves today, demanding that a Minister from the Party opposite resign over something inappropriate that was said.

Should he resign? Maybe. Yet for the Liberals to be all holier-than-thou in shrilly demanding this Minister's head strikes me as utterly hypocritical. Will it change the votes of people who already have made up their minds? I don't think so. As for the undecided, there is every indication that there are many more positive aspects of this Tory government and their platform that will win them over, as opposed to a Minister uttering a bad joke in very poor taste and driving them away.

Who has not made an off colour joke or remark that you later regretted? This happened before the election was called and is only surfacing now. The person that one was aimed at, has accepted the apology given.
People that are demanding his neck are the same group of people that never said a word when the prime minister at the time choked a protester in the heat of the moment, accepted that another PM gave the one finger salut to Canadians, said nothing when it became apparent that criminal acts had taken place involving the party in power. ... all that want his neck, I am sure that you would resign from your job if you were to make a comment that others found in bad taste. Let's get to the real problems we are facing, stop with the side shows as it appears you have nothing else to offer.
