An ammonia-treated beef fillerd ingredient that incensed celebrity chef Jamie Oliver is being dropped by a number of fast food outlets in the U.S. But Canada's largest fast food retailer, McDonald's Canada, says the ingredient was never used here.

McDonald's USA, Burger King and Taco Bell have all decided to stop using beef trimmings processed by Beef Products Inc. which uses a mixture of ammonium hydroxide and water to create a beef filler product.

The ammonium hydroxide helps to kill bacteria in fatty beef trimmings – the meat that is trimmed off larger cuts of beef and that would otherwise go into pet food and other uses.

Oliver derided the product as "pink slime" and said on his ABC reality show "Jamie Oliver's Food Revolution" last spring that he was disgusted by ammoniated beef trimmings.

"Everything about this process, to me, is about no respect for food, or people, or children, and I'd want to know when I'm eating this stuff. And I'd want it clearly labeled," he said.

With a consumer backlash growing, McDonald's, Burger King and Taco Bell have each decided to stop using BPI beef trimmings, though the former two have said that their decisions were not a reaction to Oliver's show.

In a statement issued to CTVNews.ca, Todd Bacon, senior director of quality systems at McDonald's USA, said food safety has always been a top priority for his company.

"Currently, McDonald's USA does not use ammonia-treated beef in our hamburgers. The decision to discontinue its use was not related to any particular event, but rather a result of our efforts to align our standards for beef around the world," he said.

He added that McDonald's complies with government food safety regulations and also has its own food safety measures and standards throughout its supply chain.

McDonald's Canada spokesperson Karin Campbell tells CTVNews.ca that McDonald's burgers sold in Canada have never contained beef fillers from BPI.

"Our beef patties are made with 100 per cent Canadian beef, no salt, no additives, just salt and pepper added on the grill," she said.

While many consumers might find the idea of ammonia being used in their meat alarming, Beef Product Inc. insists the ammoniating process is safe and helps to lower the risk of foodborne illness, such as salmonella and E. coli.

They also note that ammonium hydroxide is just one of a number of "processing aids" that are used throughout the meat and poultry industry.

"Ammonium hydroxide is naturally found in beef and used in the processing of numerous foods, such as baked goods, cheeses, gelatins, chocolate, caramels, and puddings," the company says on its website.

"One result of this food safety system is the dramatic reduction in the number of potential pathogens that may be present in foods, such as E. coli O157:H7."

The International Food Information Council Foundation says on its website that while processing aids such as ammonium hydroxide sometimes remain in a food after processing, they are present "only at safe and insignificant levels."

I agree: the fillers and ingredients in our foods, not to mention the medicines we take, are causing cancer rates to skyrocket.... But how are they doing this? By allowing us to live longer lives, thereby increasing our risk of cancer. Less people dying at a young age means more cancer. Therefore any food additive that improves our overall survival rate will cause the "cancer rate to skyrocket". If we were starving to death because we couldn't preserve food, we sure as heck wouldn't die of cancer.

What about the other (than MacDonalds) fast food outlets? Are they dropping it too? I'm supposed to meet people at Taco Bell tomorrow? Don't know that I should go.

e coli comes from cow feces, the run off from factory farms gets into MY (vegetarian) vegetables, so no they aren't safe. thanks! :)

If you stop eating fast food an amazing thing happens, you'll find that you have no desire for the highly processed, food-like products that they serve. If you do end up eating fast food, it will make you sick to the stomach; the body rejects it because we were not designed to eat it.

Lyn: Did you miss the 0157:H7 outbreak in spinach, or the one from bean sprouts, or strawberries? Bacterial infection can occur from multiple sources, and the propensity of organic agriculture to use manure as a fertilizer increases the risks. Being vegetarian is no protection from food born infection. You might want to brush up on your microbiology in the future.

Lyn, Kelowna: you realize you can get diseases like Ecoli from Vegetables too right? Humans were designed to eat meats get over it.

People should also check out the movie "Forks over Knives" which makes a pretty compeling link between what we eat... all the processed food and cancer of all forms. For many people food produced with toady's modified wheat is also a big issue. Google "wheat belly" I have lost 25 lbs in 5 months by eliminating 95% from my diet and the headaches are gone as well.

Its as bad as the Chinese putting melamine(?) in the milk. Way toooo many additives..what's wrong with just beef? Another reason not to eat fast food...or can it even be classed as "food"?

@lyn from Kelowna - Yeah...because you could never get ecoli from things like vegetables.....oh, wait. :/ No, no, meat's the devil, you're (not) right.

@Lynn E-coli can be present in farm fresh, chemical free vegetables. People have been eating meet since the dawn of time. Human beings have evolved on little but wheat, cornmeal and whatever meat they could kill. Beef is not the bad guy, we the consumer, the lazy consumer can be blamed for companies pumping these things into our diet and our insatiable appetite for crap. All to save a buck and in the US a lawsuit. Leave beef alone, pick on the companes who serve you less than 100% natural products. Demand better from your government.

Re: Lyn, from Kelowna. I hate to inform you that not eating meat will not keep you from coming into contact with E. Coli. You can get it from raw milk and dairy products, and fruits and vegetables can also be contaminated. Please inform yourself of something before you got about spreading incorrect "medical" advice on the internet. Oh, and don't forget to wash your hands after you make a number 2 - you can also get it from your own fecal matter - or are vegetarians so high on their horses they never have to come down and have normal bodily excretions...

@ Lyn: Typical vegan trying to push your beliefs on everyone. If you dont like meat thats fine. but keep your opinions to yourself, meat is actually good for you. just not the crap you get at a fast food joint.

Ammonia is pure poison. This all came out in a recent movie called Food Inc. A fascinating movie about how people are being systemically culled with genetic modified foods, wheat etc. and how instead of healthy foods from decades ago Americans all eat highly processed preservative loaded fast food soaked in ammonia to kill e coli. Only problem is that the fast food besides making people highly obese, which in itself causes cancer, strokes, heart problems also poisons people with ammonia and other nasty preservatives which can be cancer causing and make people generally sick and affect the nervous system. Stick to your local farmers as much as possible and cut out fast highly processed food. Make it the odd treat every few months not the norm 5 days a week. In the end you truly are what you eat.

Easy solution to the problem ... just don't eat meat. You wouldn't have to worry about Ecoli. People need to realize that animal flesh starts decaying from the moment the animal is killed. Aside from the inhumane side of eating meat, this is only one of the health related issues.
