This is a good and welcome idea. The kind of snacks that are being passed off as "food" are extremely unhealthy, especially given a largely compliant population who mostly do not read labels, or care to read them. This is no different than taxing cigarettes.

Governments should tax junk food, scientists urge

Governments around the world should introduce new taxes on unhealthy food, and limit food and beverage advertising to children, in order to slow and eventually reverse the obesity epidemic, according to a series of papers published by the British medical journal The Lancet.

The four studies -- an exhaustive effort by an international team of researchers revealed Thursday in London -- look at obesity trends around the world, their underlying causes and misconceptions, and make recommendations about how countries like the U.S. and U.K. might slim down.

Better government policies are at the top of the list.

"Action by governments and other relevant institutions is needed to halt the obesity epidemic," the authors write, noting that taxes and limitations on advertising were previously effective in curbing tobacco use.

The researchers also say international agencies, self-regulation by the private sector, health professionals and the public at large must also contribute.

The studies found that obesity -- defined as a body-mass index greater than 30kg/m2 -- is increasing worldwide, though the stats vary greatly from country to country. Only one in 10 adult women in the Netherlands is obese, compared to one in three in the U.S. and seven out of 10 in Tonga.

Worldwide, around 2 billion adults are overweight or obese, as are 170 million children.

Obesity takes up between two per cent and six per cent of health-care costs in many countries, and in some regions including the U.S. has overtaken tobacco as the largest preventable cause of disease.

The U.S. and the U.K. have the highest obesity rates among the 34 mostly western, developed member states of the Organization for Co-operation and Development. Researchers predict that those countries will be home to 65 million and 11 million more obese adults, respectively, by 2030 if rates remain unchanged.

The studies blame the epidemic, which got going in the 1970s and 80s, on factors including sedentary lifestyles and greater consumption of cheap, high-energy food.

The researchers say rising global obesity rates pose "the toughest challenge" faced by the UN member states that are due to meet for their first high-level meeting on non-communicable diseases in September.

"The UN meeting provides a key opportunity to... seriously address the continuing global epidemic of obesity. Beyond that meeting, the test will be how well member states match their declarations with supportive funding and policies to support global actions," they wrote.

Junk Food Should Be Treated Like Tobacco. Tax It And Apply The Funds Generated To Our Hospital System.

How dreadfully awful of these scientists to stigmatize fat people, and make them feel bad about themselves! That's not politically correct. We're immersed in the Age of Acceptance, within which everybody is entitled to be mindlessly treated as smart, beautiful, and special. We lecture folks of all shortcomings about loving themselves, and demand that the general population love and accept them for who they are! Goodness, I'm glad that we're not applying a tax levy to fat people and, instead, giving our gluttonous, wasteful governments yet ANOTHER excuse to impose a pocket-picking tax while pretending to actually care about the problem.

Absolutely ridiculous.Mind your own business. If people want to eat garbage, let them. Why do people feel the need to tax everything? This is one of the principal problems with Canada. If it is born, tax it. If it moves - tax it. If it can be consumed, tax it. If the damn thing breathes, tax it. And finally, if it dies, tax it, tax it again, and tax it some more.Bloody ridiculous.Taxes - a made in Canada solution.

Now this is a novel idea to get small businesses back to work. They can make home fried chips and dips and served over the counter into the customers own dishes to take home and then it is not JUNK food. A variety of Chip, Donut, and Soda pop stores just like the 1950's. Bring back the drugstore soda bars and then it is not JUNK. The JUNK food is Food but just served in prepackaged containers just like frozen meals that sell for $1.00 to $3.00 in your supermarket. Will this also be classifed as JUNK. Does that mean all those little cake type foods that are packaged for lunches will be taxed just because it means parents don't have to cook muffins, etc. What is the difference between packaged potato and nacho chips and and potato salad and tortillas as they are served on a plate. This is just another politician wanting to get more tax money. Where is my grandmother's cook book for those old recipes??!!

The last thing anyone needs is another tax. Lets tell the scientists to shut up until they're duly elected to public office. What is it with these big brained morons always trying to engineer social behaviour? Take care of yourselves and let others do the same. If I eat crap, get fat and die, it's none of anyone's concern. Next they'll want to tax sofa's, snuggly's and warm socks. What a bunch of putzes.

The Nanny State! Let people make their own choices. If we consent to thjis nonsense, what is next? I tire of these dim witted researchers woh focus on a small minority then try to apply their findings to the majority.

I wonder what the cost of the new office building full of government workes that would be required to oversee such a program. Building cost, employees, pension plans, what did I miss? Probably a net loss of several million. If the government were to legislate what we ate and drank would we be able to sue them when one of our family members died prematurely?

Does anyone really think adding more tax will stop people eating fattening food. It just doesn't work and we pay enough in taxes already. Look at cigarettes. 90% of the price of a package of cigarettes goes to the government in taxes and people still smoke. The ostracising of smokers did more to stop smoking than any tax. Will the tax stop at fast food or be slowly eased into the grocery store and our meat and bread and sugar. We do not need the governments hand in our pockets any more than it is already

A resounding "up yours" Mr Gov man. There are times i can't afford to eat other than junk food. How about taxing the crap out of all the seeados and rich mans toys every year. Along with the property tax, they should get a tax bill for the amount of toys they own.

We already have too many taxes! How about we just embrace liberty and personal responsibility and when obese people get sick they can pay for their own healthcare as a result of their own life decisions.the solution to higher healthcare costs because of govt intervention is not more govt.

I would welcome this only "IF" government eliminated taxes elsewhere on products that are considered to promote a healthy life style such as sports equipment or taxes on registration fees for sports or gym memberships.

How about instead of that, we just tax stupidity? Because you can eat as much junk food as you want, but as long as you exercise on a daily basis, nothing happens! It's time that the stupid parents in Canada, the US, and Europe stopped blaming others for their fat kids and blame their horrid parenting.

Interesting that well paid scientists (failed, forgot, slipped their mind) to take into account that people who can not afford the luxuries of good food, which is expensive, have to resort to cheaper food which most often is not the healthiest. Exactly where are the poor suppose to get this extra money from, their rent? And I'm not talking about chips, cookies and pop.

I'm glad that I grew up in the 60s and 70s because it was fun and you could eat what you want, live how you wanted to without government and their minions pissing on your choices! This is why the world is in such chaos anymore no one is happy! Everyone is grouchy because we are conditioned to eat, think, behave and what have you got? Anger that's what! LET FREEDOM RING and LEAVE US ALONE!

This is actually a good idea... then the cheapest foods aren't the crappiest for you. They should then use that money to make healthier food more affordable as people turn to the "junk" food since it's so cheap!! They need to make healthier food more accessible on price. People would take an extra moment to think before buying it if there was a tax on junk.

I vote the Government investigates the scientist labeling everything bad and touting what's good and 'if' they and those prompting them to proclaim against things are invested financially in that which they promote as good for the public. I bet that would be a real "eye-opener".

I know that taxing junk food is a good idea, but here's an even better idea.....why doesn't the government lower food cost on healthy foods such as vegetables and fruits so that those with lower incomes can afford to feed their families better food.

I consider myself a scientist in every respect of the definition. I take serious offense to my fellow peers trying to control the direction of social policy with arm sleeve facts between food (fatty) and obesity. The science behind the the link between the two is readily available. However it is up to the individual to enlighten themselves surrounding the theory, and make use of such science. Science is fact, it does not get involved in opinion based variables of the fickle social evolution of man. It speaks in truth and math. Stop diluting the measure of our universe and success as life within it by using it to justify the poor decisions the individual makes. Nature, our supreme science over man handles it own. You eat to little, you die. You eat to much, you die. Those that understand this very basic science into ones own nature (whether by choice or, status) will move forward, those that do not....sadly there is no second place in the animal kingdom.

Taxing junk food is a great idea. The revenue should go toward making healthy food more affordable, as well as the health care system to treat obesity related problems.

At $5 for a bag of chips and $2 for a 2L bottle of pop, I don't need taxes to convince me not to buy junk food - the sky high price does it all by itself. Just cut out snacking; you can lose weight and save money at the same time.

That's all we need is more tax. Thats what the great minds of today come up with to help combat obesity? A tax? really? What about the guy who normally doesn't eat a lot of junk food but throws a party every once and awhile? Why should he have to pay taxes because of others? How about reducing the cost of sports and healthy food? No wait that makes too much sense.

Taxing the junk food is an idea... but here's another one... DECREASE PRICES ON HEALTHY FOOD!!! I spend over $80 every two week in fruits and veggies alone! And that is only for my 7-yr old son and I... If people could get an equal amount of healthy food for what they pay for the junk food then they might be more inclined to buy the healthy food. At then end of the day it comes down to choices, people choose to eat healthy or they choose to eat unheathy. Adding taxes or raising prices of the junk food isn't going to discourage people from buying it. Look at cigarettes, they are more and more expensive but people still buy them.

darn rights there should be taxes. they should tax comfort foods that are not good for you. Why should I have to put my tax dollars towards health care for those that abuse their bodies with bad habits and don't take care of themselves properly. Don't punish the healthy for those that don't care. Tax the same as cigarettes for that reason. By the way, I love potato chips!!

Enough of idealist shills using fear to regulate everything! They're ruining the economy with global warming scams against industry and now they're telling us what we can eat while they make money off of their investment into "organic foods" that they want us to eat and pay the hefty prices for. Will this evil ever stop? We are all adults and can decide for ourselves...we don't need government or science interfering with our freedoms.

Absolutely 100% agree with Janna. I don't care if you eat twelve bags of chips a day and weight 650lbs. It's none of my or anyone else's business. My business begins and ends with myself and my family. Unfortunately, the social engineers out there see it differently. Too bad you can't tax ignorance.
