You never realize how important something or someone is until they're gone. During your time, I wasn't a fan. Now that we've lost you, I realize there was more reason to be one than for any other player in the House. And now you're no longer around to explain the rest to people like me.Beyond that, I think the whole country is feeling a hole in our collective heart. A ferocious pain that will not go away until the next 'Jack' can assure us that you're still around in one way or another. Until your vision of an Ottawa being what we need it to be becomes true. And a Prime Minister that shows the same level of courage, passion, optimism, and fierce loyalty to the movement of becoming the best this country can possibly be.We'll miss you Jack. You didn't get to enjoy the Big Seat on the other side, but you've opened the flood gates that will result in your successor to take the biggest seat in the House. And the rest will become the brightest points in Canadian history.

We were saddened to hear of Jack Layton's passing this morning. I have always been an NDP follower, but this last election saw not just me but my husband and 4 children voting NDP as well. This morning when I told my 22 year old daughter of his passing she cried "NO". He affected the lives of our family and we heeded his "Get out and vote" advice. He will be missed by many Canadians. Our condolences go out to Jack's family he was a special person to many thank's for allowing us to share him with you.

Today is a somber day for a lot of Canadians, especially for Jack's family. Mr. Layton, you will be sadly missed. Cancer knows not colour, race, creed or political preference. It is a ruthless killer and Mr. Layton did his best to keep it at bay.Jack, you gave me a renewed sense of faith in this last election. Having been so jaded after living out of the country for the last 4 years and only reading about the state of Canadian politics in foreign papers, it was a breath of fresh air to see such tenacity and dedication to ensuring that the voice of the country; the underdogs, be heard on Parliament Hill. My deepest sympathies to the Layton family. You have had the task of fighting many battles with Mr. Layton, some small some big. It just seemed to make all of you that much stronger, to keep battling. To struggle with this and not win should not keep you down but rather it should move you all to go forward and be determined to overcome and succeed. Mr Layton would want you to carry on and move forward and to remember that he is in the political arena above and he is in that battle to win so prayers to him and to all of you and remember he is a winner think of the millions that loved him and miss him. Credit to Bessie Anderson Stanley's poem , "What is Success?" Jack Layton achieved success because he lived well, laughed often, and loved much; Jack enjoyed the trust of pure women, the respect of intelligent men and the love of little children; Jack filled his niche and accomplished his task; Jack never lacked appreciation of Earth's beauty or failed to express it; Jack has left the world better than he found it, Jack always looked for the best in others and gave them the best he had; Jack Layton's life was an inspiration; his memory a benediction.

Heartfelt sympathy to Mr. Layton's wife, children and friends. He was an inspiration with his positive attitude and strong aspirations. His election to the opposition must have brought him great joy - unfortunately, he couldn't celebrate it as long as he would have liked but, above all, he enjoyed a summer that he likely knew was his last with those he especially cherished - proving that all our professional goals dim in comparison to the love in our lives. To his family - know that love will live on. It may feel like it right now, but I know from experience that it will.

To Jack's family: my condolences... He was certainly a good man, dedicated, optimistic and engaging. Many of us could recognize that he was very, very sick at the last news conference. Yet this news still comes as a shock, and touches our hearts so deep. I am thankful for another month of 'quiet time' in Ottawa before the the house sits again, time for politicians and Canadians to reflect. While I didn't agree much with his socialist tendencies, I will remember Layton and always admire him for his dedication to public service, his 'positive' outlook, his smile, and never failing optimism for this country.

Jack Layton remained steadfast to finding solutions to the real problems that our Country faces, across the board; staying clear of the partisan political stagnation... He was never afraid of confrontation, and succeeded in raising dialogue on issues that matter, across opposing sides, despite high tension. He was an assertive bridge builder, and had the vision and character to unite people from different points of view. May he rest in peace, and may his bequest live on and continue to grow...

After all those long, hard years he won't be able to take up the reigns at Parliament. So I sit here crying, for a man I never met, for a man I have always admired and for a man whose beliefs I have always cherished. He was a man of the people and the star of our hearts. He was feisty, determined and above all, he was a strong advocate of those who couldn't speak or whose voices were ignored; the homeless, the elderly and First Nations people, all across this land. I knew the Hon. Mr. Jack Layton when I was a young. This was before he went into politics. He used to visit with our neighbours just down the street from my house. We used to argue quite a bit, he and I, over just about everything. Actually it was more like debating. He used to love debating with my mother over all the neighbourhood issues. My mother would get so mad they would start arguing and then when they were done, would then make another appointment to visit to argue (debate) some more. These debates happened about twice a week for a while until our neighbour passed away. By then, the Hon. Mr. Layton was already in politics and was a busy man. My thoughts and prayers are with his family right now; May he rest in peace and painless now. May the Good Lord keep him safe.

I heard the news about the untimely death of Jack Layton while driving to Tim Horton's for my morning coffee (very Canadian thing to do) and immediately burst into tears. First, for the profound loss felt by Jack's family but also for the loss for all Canadians and our political system. When the history books are written, Jack Layton will stand head and shoulders above most of the politicians of today for his for integrity, committment to principles of social justice, and passion. In the present world of Canadian politics where pettiness and greed are the norm, Jack embodied the vision that most Canadians want for a better and humane world. I only hope that we can all be inspired by his legacy to continue working and attain his dream for Canada. My deepest condolences to his family.

As a lifelong citizen of the United States, I must say that I wish our Democratic Party led by Obama took more lessons from Canada's New Democratic Party led by Layton -- Jack Layton was a true progressive, who stood up for people that were forgotten about, people who had the least, and yet always had the most to lose. He inspired a nation and always stuck to his principles, never made any apologies or excuses for what his beliefs and fought for them with dogged determination (are you paying attention, President Obama?). I'm very saddened by his passing, and I hope that the NDP never loses its new spirit of never giving up, fighting with everything you've got, and never stopping "until the job is done". Rest in peace, Mr. Leader. This American salutes you and all you have accomplished.Casey E.Wilkes-Barre, Pennsylvania, USA

I feel empty, and a great loss! Jack was a great inspiration, heart full of care, meeting the needs of Canadians, by fighting for the rights of Canadians. His Strength, Determination, Honesty made him a very practical politician always listened to everyone! A Man you wanted to believe in. He gave Canadians a sense of hope even when our Country wasn't at its best! He was a fighter, politically and personally enough that he took the troubles of Canadians personally! To Olivia and Family, He is in God’s hands, taking him to a wonderful place, God is walking beside you, in such a time of sorrow for all of you! God Bless You All and everyone in Canada!

My condolences to the Layton family. This disease has killed indiscriminately in our extended family and I cannot believe that someone like Jack who worked out and stayed fit over the years could get stricken like this. No one deserves to suffer from this. Although I never voted NDP before, I, like many other Canadians, admired his drive, conviction and integrity. Who knows, maybe if he was still around, he could have been the PM down the road. Well, hopefully, you have gone to a better place. Rest-in-peace.

I was very saddened to hear the news of Jack Layton passing away. My sincere condolences go out to his wife and family, to his party members. Canada and Quebec have lost a wonderful person and politician that truly cared about his citizens and believed in his convictions. We waited a long time to have someone of his calibre surface and it is so unfair that he has been taken from all who loved and cared for him at such a young age.
His leadership will be greatly missed and extremely difficult to fill. Men like Jack Layton do not come around very often.

God bless you Jack

The passing of a great canadian politician, Jack Layton, will leave a considerable vacuum in the NDP and Parliament. Here is a man who truly love this Country and its People he will be missed terribly . He was not afraid to stand up for us let us not be afraid to continue his work. It is time Government and the Medical Society stopped blaming smoking solely for this terrible disease I don't even think I have ever seen Jack smoking a cigarette as many don't . We need as a People to get back to the basics and Governments need to support getting back to basics and stop supporting the Pharmaceutical Companies and the mass production of crappy food that's full of cancer causing agents. That's what Jack would want we wouldn't even need a massive health care plan if they would do this because we would all be healthier . But there is more money in the sick then the healthy so I guess we will never see this happen . God Bless you Jack thanks for being there for all of Us and to your Family may you find solace in His work

I met Mr. Layton about 2 years ago during a visit to Parliamant hill with my daughters. Being in the military I have never had much time for the NDP as a party nor their politics. When Mr. Layton was introduced he took the time to shake all of our hands and he asked me what I did for a living. I told him and was also quite honest about my beliefs that the NDP would see me on the street if ever elected. Mr. Layton with a smile said to me, how would you know that? We have never formed a government, and one day we will and I will take great joy in proving you wrong. Jack, I am so sorry that day will never come for you sir. You were a great statesman who passionately believed in your party and in this nation. I am so sorry you will not be a part of the next parliament. RIP sir. Please allow me to share with you the Jack Layton I knew. I have worked with about 7 or 8 politicians for over 25 years.I met with Jack several times in Toronto to deal with the issue of homelessness. As someone knocked on his door as we spoke, I found out that it was a first morning ritual for his staff to inform him of anyone who was homeless had not made it through the night in the middle of winter which can be so cold and lonely. This fellow informed Jack that in fact the night before there had been yet another fatality. Yet another person had frozen to death. As I watched him, I am sure I saw tears swell up, while he tried to continue our meeting. In all my years working as a senior adviser to many federal Ministers, Jack was the one politician I knew was just about as caring and straightforward, with no hidden agendas as anyone could possibly find.As I walked out of that office that day, I realized I had just met someone extremely special and I only hoped that he would one day be in a position for more people to see the person I was so privileged to have met and worked with. He did it and so much more.I am sure that God was smiling this morning as He welcomed Jack home and said "Thank you Jack" for helping my children. Now it is my turn to shower you with all the happiness that you so deserve. We can be selfish and want him here with us suffering or we can be selfless knowing he is now in a place we can only imagine and he so deserved.Thank you Jack for all you did for so many .

This is truly a sad day for all Canadians. I believe that Jack's passing means the loss of one of our greatest leaders. Even critics of his politics can't deny that the man brought something special to our country's political climate. His dynamism and infectious smile coupled with his commitment to helping Canadians engage in debate with one another rather than relying on fear mongering or cheap political tricks brought something refreshing to the national table.

It was this same animation and feel-good attitude and his message that each of us can make a difference that helped to mobilize the country's youth previously politically unengaged youth this past election, something which I believe will go down as one of Jack's greatest accomplishments. The phenomenon was undeniable. Leading up to the recent election the air around McGill university, where I am currently studying to complete my undergrad, was so politically charged you could swear that you could actually feel it. Previously apathetic or cynical youth began to believe they could make a difference. More than that, they believed they had a responsibility to do so.

I hope that that energy doesn't dissipate with jack's passing. I hope that his message and ideals will live on. Some might claim that Jack's passing will put a the stop to the wave of highly politicized youth and could mean the end of the NDP's newly strengthened position in ottawa. I believe that they are wrong. If there was ever a man with enough personality and drive to live on in people's it would be Jack. All you have to do to see this is look at a student's Facebook newsfeed today. Countless statuses dedicated to Jack, more than any passing movie star or musician could hope for.

We will all miss you Happy Jack. RIP.

It was with great sadness I learned of Jack Layton's passing. If there is any silver lining with his passing it is he was able to see just how far he had advanced the NDP party. During the last election campaign he worked tirelessly to get the Prime Minister's job even though he was fighting cancer and had a hip replacement. Can you just close your eyes for a moment and imagine just how much he could have done for this country if he had won the Prime Ministers job.If there is a lesson to learn from this sad event it is the following. If all the politicians put in just 5% of his energy into their work. Just think of how truly more wonderful this country could be.My condolences to his wife and family.Rest now Jack and trust that you have given the Party Members all the tools necessary to carry on your Vision and Legacy. Jack Layton was a man who earned the trust and respect of almost everyone. I am not a supporter of the NDP, but Mr. Layton had the honesty and dedication to the people's rights that made me want him to succeed. These qualities are sadly lacking in most politicians, who have their own self-serving agenda. Anyone could see that he was not in "it" for his own personal gain. It is so very sad that, after reaching his amazing goal as Leader of the Opposition, he was deprived of his chance to really shine. He was the white knight charging into battle for the "little guy/girl" never afraid to do battle for what he believed in. My condolences to his wife, children, and friends. You should be so proud of his accomplishments and the respect he earned from almost everyone in the country! He will not be forgotten.

What a sad day for Olivia, family and all of the brothers and sisters of the NDP as Jack lost his fight with cancer today. Jack was definitely a visionary, an example of a "doer" and encouraged so many of us to get involved in politics. When I told Jack in Halifax in 2009 that we did not have any Aboriginal MP's in the NDP and wanted to know what we were going to do about it. He told me to get involved and change that. I did and ran as the NDP Candidate in the Saanich-Gulf Islands. We successfully elected two Aboriginal MP's. I lost but he encouraged me to keep going. I am now Co-Chair of the Aboriginal Commission for the NDP and promise Jack that I will continue his fight to make Canada a better place for all of us - his vision - which we will continue to move forward.

As a young Canadian I am deeply saddened by the death of a great Leader, Jack Layton. With him as a Politician I had hope that one day the little people would be a priority in Canadian Government. This is devastating and saddening. I have to be honest in saying when he announced he was taking another break, I think I knew then that he was on his way to the end of his days. I think he knew. I think he hid it well and always remained strong for the people of Canada. No one could pass from this world with more grace and dignity than Jack Layton. And the milestones and achievements from the past election he leaves in his wake will hopefully not crumble in his absence. He lived long enough to see his party take a huge step forward. To Jack Layton: You will be severely missed. To the NDP party of Canada: Please never let this party fall short of his vision, both for the party itself, and for the Canadian people.

R.I.P. Jack.

I always imagined you were invincible. You were always a fighter, and I never imagined that this would happen, even despite how sick you became. Sometimes we forget that people are only human, and bad things happen to good people.

You were the only good politician Canada had and now you're gone. What will Parliament do without you? I can only hope someone is able to help keep the party you raised to amazing heights to stay in such an important position.

You did great things, Jackie boy.

A great man, a great politician. The country will miss Jack Layton in many ways. He was the optimism in Canadian politics.

May you rest in peace dear Jack. You fought a good battle and we are all so proud with what you accomplished. May you look down at your team and guide them in the right direction. May your family find peace in seeing all that you created.

Jack Layton was a great leader. I feel he gave a voice to the younger generation (I'm 25) and he stood for Canada's future. He let the youth know that their voice can be heard and that it does matter. He will be greatly missed. Very sad news.
