This article makes out that it is riskier to quit drinking than it is being an alcoholic and drug addict. The premise here is she'd have been safer and healthier had she stayed drunk. And just how stupid do they think we are? (She would have been safest in rehab which she refused).

Amy Winehouse killed by quitting booze, family says

Date: Thu. Jul. 28 2011 2:11 PM ET

Amy Winehouse may have died because she stopped drinking alcohol.

At present the 'Rehab' singer's cause of death is unknown but it is possible her decision to try and quit booze completely after years of heavy drinking could have caused her body a shock or seizure which killed her at her home in Camden, north London, last Saturday.

A source said: "Abstinence gave her body such a fright they thought it was eventually the cause of her death."

Reports had suggested the 27-year-old star had been drinking heavily and had possibly taken drugs in the days leading up to her death, but her father Mitch has refuted the claims, insisting the opposite is true.

The source added to The Sun newspaper: "He has wanted everyone to know that he, her boyfriend Reg Traviss and her manager believed it was actually the complete opposite.

"He said doctors had told Amy to gradually reduce her intake of alcohol and to avoid bingeing at all costs. Amy told him she couldn't do that. It was all or nothing and she gave up completely.

"Mitch said the shock of giving up, after everything she had been through over a bad few years, was just too much for her to take."

A post-mortem was held on Monday, the day before Amy's funeral, to try and determine the cause of her death but the results were deemed inconclusive and medical officials are awaiting the results of histology and toxicology tests.

Police have now begun probing into what Amy was between 8 p.m. on Friday night and 4 p.m. the next day when she was discovered deceased by one of her security guards.

A source told the Daily Mirror newspaper: "She had a chaotic lifestyle and often she would head out late at night or even in the early hours of the morning to see friends.

"No one really knows what she did after she was checked on by her doctor at 8 p.m. and before she was found dead at 4 p.m. the next day.

"There is a possibility she left her home at some point during the evening, and some of her friends believe she may have headed out later."

As the Cdn Nurse stated very well, anyone in the medical field knows that there are many medications that cannot be stopped "cold turkey". These are not cigarettes we are talking about. Patients have to be weaned off of them slowly so the body can adjust.. Amy was a very talented person, however she was caught up in using dangerous drugs. May she RIP

People make their own choices. Sometimes good, sometimes bad. In Amy's case, she made very bad choices that ended up costing her her life. To blame her parents for this is ignorant and unjustified. All we know about Amy's life is what was shown in the media. We didn't know her personally, we don't know her parents personally, and we don't know her friends personally. Until you do, there is no point in speculating how, or what caused her death. Could it have been prevented, definitely. Unfortunately, that's not the point. A life was lost. That's all that matters.

Guess where she got her inability to face reality in the face? Let this be a lesson to young people that fame and fortune doesn't solve everything and most of all does not excuse bad behaviour.

Either way, whether she made bad choices or not, someone lost their baby ... terrible that she didn't live a long life, one of a kind voice and so talented. RIP.

First off, the family is very likely correct. Putting all the rhetoric, judgements and uniformed comments aside, the fact is that after years of alcohol and/or benzodiazepine use, the body becomes, for lack of a better description, accustomed to the levels in the body. Alcohol acts as a depressant in the brain, blocking neurotransmitters etc. If you stop suddenly drinking or taking benzodiazepines (ativan, clonazepam etc) "cold turkey" you run the risk of a sudden increase in blood pressure which can lead to a stroke. Many people will have heard of DT (delirium tremens) where halucinations and seizures may occur. This can be, and often is, fatal. The appropriate treatment is doctor supervised, ideally as an inpatient in a detox facility. These are facts people, not opinion and anyone who is an alcoholic/addict or anyone who cares about an addict, should be aware of this before attempting to quit.

Marc - judgemental much? It's a disease just like any other disease. Hopefully you never have anyone around you that you love that has to deal with that disease but I imagine if you did, and they died, you wouldn't be so quick to judge. Shame on you.

I believe that her death could have come from a seizure. My ex-boyfriend had seizures when he decided to go cold turkey; these were so bad that one time he ended up in a Florida hospital because of low sugar volume in his body. I agree the place for them is in rehab so their substance intake can be controlled; but when the alcoholic is at this stage they really think that they can do it on their own, because they believe its not that hard & they cannot handle the controlled environment, much less admitting what stage their alcoholism is. I feel this is very sad that a person has to hit rock bottom before they even think of getting help and in a lot of cases its to late.

You're not supposed to pity idiots that destroy their own lives. She should be looked upon with nothing but hatred for how she took the give of life and threw it in the garbage.

with proper medical attention and a "desire" to be sober she would be alive today. If she was as addicted as everyone says, she could not sober up with out guidence. she chose to go alone and this is what happens. end of story.

Quitting booze/drugs didn't kill her....it was her long usage of substances that weakened her body. Reason enough for all those young people out there thinking they are invinsible...it will catch up to you one day. Life is the most precious thing we have....don't waste it.

lmao - died because of quitting booze. I guess that's why she had to cancel her tour a few weeks ago. There is nothing funnier than the excuses people come up with to justify stupidity.

The family is in denial and that is part of the problem. Where was the professional counselling? Anyone with any experience with that kind of alcoholic abuse knows quitting cold turkey after a lot of drinnking can kill you, It is a simple fact, far too well known. What planet where her handlers on?

In a society that loves to condemn, nothing positive written about Amy will be viewed with compassion. Bless you anyways.

Yet her mother who saw her the day before she died later said she seemed 'out of it'. Mitch seems to have always had his head in the sand about his daughter, and is trying to write revisionist history. Remember, even the song 'Rehab' contains the line: 'I ain't got the time, and if my daddy thinks I'm fine.'

Is this the same father who once claimed that she didn't have a problem? Enabler with a capital 'E'

The poor soul is dead, leave her alone at this point! What killed her is not important anymore. Rest in peace!

I see and her father is now a doctor? Please! She died because she abused her body and her body finally gave up. Do not turn her into a hero in death. She is not someone I would want my children to look up to. She made very poor personal choices and they killed her. End of story.
